The Bermuda Sports Journal was established in part because many of the sporting organizations have not kept records of the achievements of their athletes whether it be in photographs, documented history, or statistics. As people grow older, memories fade and is forgotten, therefore, unrecorded information frequently become fables. The goal of the Bermuda Sports Journal is to interview people and document their stories to ensure preservation of all their stories. We aim to be as accurate as possible, whilst relying on people’s honesty and their re-collection of events, including correct dates and times, therefore, some information may be inaccurate.

The Importance of In-House Media Relations
On Tuesday November 28th, 2023, I was given the opportunity to speak at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Sports Governing Bodies on a subject that means a lot to me.
The need for each club, association, and governing body in Bermuda to establish a media relations department within their organization. This offers many young people within the organization a second chance at educational skills that they may have missed in school or the opportunity to develop new skills and career opportunities that will also benefit their clubs and equally as individuals.
For a very long time, many clubs have relied on the media (Newspapers and TV) to cover their events, or the event goes unnoticed. To be frank with you, the media are interested in getting the public to view their product for their benefit. Your clubs’ events, football, motocross, golf, swimming etc.…must be of value to the club for reasons of preservation of history, maintaining club records and for archival research.
Every year, each club should have photographs taken of all members as they get older and may one day pass on. Portraits, action, and candid pictures. Do we have pictures of Clyde Best in his school uniform or action pictures of him playing for Somerset? Do we have records of how many goals he scored for Somerset or against PHC?
Who is Joey Richardson, what did he do, what are his records, wins, or stats? What is his story?
If each club had a media relations department; photographer, graphic designer, videographer, journalist and statistician, your information would be stored in your club’s archives and shared with the mainstream media when necessary. If each club would invest in their own future by offering its members the opportunity to be responsible for these, it also opens doors for employment with skills and experience in the working world, locally and internationally.
We need to stop expecting the newspapers and broadcast media to come to us, we need to get to the public via them, even if it means we must go to them. When each organization has its own archives, the game against PHC and North Village can be cross referenced from two different viewpoints and still have a common thread that ties them together.
Fifty or hundreds of years from now, anyone can research Ken Dear, Frankie Brewster, David Sabir, Reginal Gomes and many more people whose contributions are recorded and not forgotten. Just like Jamaica’s Bob Marley, Trevor Berbick, and Merlene Ottey, everything you need to know about them is available to future generations.

Ditch the “Summer Bod” Mentality: Embrace Exercise All Year Round
With Bermudian summer (May 24th) just 58 days away, the urge to hit the beach and show off a “summer bod” might be daunting because you don’t feel ready. However, focusing solely on a seasonal fitness quest is not only unsustainable but also overlooks the wonderful benefits of staying consistent throughout the year. The “summer bod” mentality often leads to crash dieting and extreme workouts, summer detox extremes and more, which are not only unhealthy but also demotivating in the long run. This type of approach often results in burnout and disappointment, leaving you feeling worse off than when you started. Instead of viewing exercise as a temporary fix, it’s important, to embrace it as an essential part of a healthy and balanced lifestyle. Here’s why waiting until summer to prioritize your fitness is a missed opportunity:
Bermuda Sports Journal | 2024 12
1. Consistent Exercise Boosts Mood and Energy:
Participating in regular physical activity releases endorphins, the body’s natural mood elevators. This helps combat stress, anxiety, and fatigue, leaving you feeling energized and positive throughout the year, not just in the summer.
2 .Building a Strong Foundation Takes Time :
Crash workouts won’t provide lasting results However consistent exercise, even low impact exercises definitely helps build muscle endurance, improve cardiovascular health, and increase bone density. These long-term benefits contribute to a healthier and more active lifestyle, regardless of the season.
3 . Embrace the Season, Not Just the Summer Sun:
Winter and spring offer unique opportunities for outdoor activities like brisk walks, jogging, or even joining a recreational sports team. Even though a lot of us want to stay in our beds during the cooler months, bundle up, get out there and get moving. Then you can come back and be rewarded with a nice warm bed. Try to learn to appreciate the beauty of different seasons.
4 .Find an Activity You Enjoy
Exercise shouldn’t feel like a chore. Explore different activities like circuit training classes which offer the variety of cardio and strength training, dancing, swimming, or yoga. Find something you genuinely enjoy, and you’ll be more likely to stick with it year-round.
5 .Celebrate Progress, Not Perfection:
Focus on celebrating your progress, no matter how small. This could be increasing your workout duration, trying a new activity, or simply feeling stronger and more energetic. Celebrate your achievements and enjoy the journey, not just the final goal.
Remember, prioritizing your health and wellness isn’t seasonal; it’s a lifelong commitment. Ditch the “summer bod” mentality and embrace a sustainable and enjoyable approach to exercise. By incorporating physical activity into your routine all year round, you’ll reap the numerous benefits of fitness and feel your best, summer and beyond.
Stay consistent and B-Active For Life!

Athletes and Social Media The Good,
The Bad and The Ugly
The Good
Social media for athletes can be positive and have several benefits. It is part of the reality for teens and adult athletes alike. Here are a few of the benefits:
Building Your Personal Brand
– social media can be a very powerful and useful tool for athletes to build their brand and expand their network. They can share messages and choose content that aligns with their values, informs their followers of their success and the reality of their journey. This can assist with strengthening relationships with coaches, teammates and even ultimately lead to opportunities for college and ultimately the workplace.
Keeping a Pulse on The Sport – social media allows athletes to keep current on new developments on technique, equipment, strategies and trends that are relevant to aspects of your athletic life. This can include
nutrition, sports psychology, what your peers are doing that can be helpful for you and your game.
Leveraging Your Voice and Role Modeling Power – social media can be used to influence others and be a role model for others. Being authentic and intentional about sharing messages about causes you are passionate about and lending support to others, including other athletes, can be positive, powerful and impactful.
The Bad
While social media’s presence can have many benefits, use of it as a medium for bragging, belittling, blaming and berating has sadly become more common that we even know. Here are a few examples of how social media can have a negative impact and effect.
Overuse – The average student-athlete athlete spends an average of 4.5hrs per day on social media. We can hypothesize this can include checking statistics, scrolling through posts etc. This level of use can contribute to higher levels of anxiety and depression as well as distraction.
Distractions – Social media may have the appearance of being a “mindless” distraction
14 Bermuda Sports Journal | 2024
as one scrolls aimlessly through the feeds. The challenge can come when a post’s content or image is a trigger or is negative in nature.
This can impact an athlete from a momentary jolt to a downward spiral of sadness, self-doubt or negative thinking. Of the high social media users, 36.4% said the usage did not help them to reduce stress or anxiety.
Poor content – As posting to social media is unregulated, athletes should be mindful of the range in the quality of content. The risk is that posts can be unfounded and candidly, just inaccurate information that can be taken as fact. Be sure to cross-reference content that is guiding training or performance and ensure it is from a reputable source.
Unhealthy comparisons and the portrayal of false realities – Social media leverages snapshots in time and can often create a narrative that in a subset of the reality. Athletes can be at risk of making comparisons to trends and posts that serve as a distraction and may not even be the reality. This can lead to loss of confidence, frustration, low self-esteem individually and erode relationships on a team.
“It (social media) is a big ego competition,” observed one collegiate men’s track and field team competitor.
“It’s a form of peacocking, where you’re going around showing other people how elegant your feathers are. A sense of individualism, as opposed to focusing on what really matters: the team.”
“It’s missing the point,” he continued. “They’re just saying ‘hey, look at me,’ trying to make sure they’re being seen, driving them to make decisions that are better for making them look good than for the team having success.”
“There’s a saying that’s been going around, ‘I’m him’” he explained. “it’s something people will say after they have a highlight play, and hyping themself, as opposed to their team.”
There used to be a “There’s no ‘I’ in team” approach to sports.”
Now it’s “There’s no team, just ‘I.’”
(Psychology Today, Dec 2 2023)
The Ugly
Mental health challenges and anxiety impacting the experience and the performance – Naomi Osaka is well known for pulling out of the French Open in 2021 stating that social media and negative press were a key part of her mental health issues. Inappropriate and unfounded comments and negative press were cited as the main reasons for her challenges. In 2021, a study done on the effects of social media on the mental health of student-athletes also ound that 21% of athletes reported depression. The research suggested that one of the reasons for this depression is the culture of athletics that emphasizes “being mentally tough, showing no sign of weakness and fighting through the pain” (1. Brougham, 2021)
Harassment and bullying – much has been written about this topic generally, and athletes are no exception. There are numerous statistics and stories about athletes, their friends, teammates, coaches
and families being subjected to unnecessary and inappropriate commentary. There is an abuse of accessibility and interactivity, primarily through anonymous comments that can have harmful and lasting effects. While there are techniques to manage and filter this inappropriate and often incessant backlash, this can become distracting and demoralizing, however, will at the very least and impact performance.
Tips and Suggestions
1. Be conscious and deliberate about building your brand. Clearly define the key messages and mediums you think are best aligned with who you are, your brand and your goals.
2. Be discerning about your social media choices – not all are the same. Look at the feeds and those you follow. Are they credible, positive and support where you are going?
3. Own Your Power with Social Media Use – Who you follow, who follows you and who, how and why you interact (do not be distracted or pulled into trolls or negativity). Be authentic and share the real you, not what you think people want to see.
4. Be the change you want to see – Make comments and be supportive. If you can’t say something nice (or constructive) don’t say anything at all!
Social media is undoubtedly a useful medium that can be used to build an athlete’s brand and enhance performance, however, being mindful as an athlete to proactively manage it rather than it managing you is critical to maintaining mental, emotional, physical well-being which ultimately leads to performance success.

Bermuda’s young ‘up-and-coming’ athletes get a rare opportunity to compete against American athletes on home soil in the Bermuda Challenge, which will be held in conjunction with the National Cross-Country Championships held at the Botanical Gardens.
The event, hosted by the Bermuda National Athletics Association in partnership with the Bermuda Tourism Authority, will see a field of invited American Secondary School athletes in action in pre-qualified races. This is the second time for this event, and it gives the visiting athletes the experience of racing overseas while helping the local competitors to compete against unknown talent.
The Challenge also featured youth age categories, as well as open, masters, and senior divisions.
In the Girls 12-13 2.1 Mile Run, Zakhya Scott placed 8th with a time of 20:39.90.
