Home cooking that will melt hearts this Valentine’s Day BY SARAH LAGAN slagan@bermudasun.bm

Delicious food goes hand in hand with Valentine’s Day — so what better way to celebrate than to whip up a few romantic recipes for your loved one? We tracked down some of the island’s top chefs and asked them to share some of their best, love-inspired recipes with us. JC Garzia at Newstead gave us perhaps the most lavish (and slightly boozy) dessert you could dream of for

Valentine’s Day — his special Large Lady Fine Crepes filled with Strawberry and Scented Cointreau and Bourbon with Vanilla and Ice Cream. He lovingly places, on the top of the dessert, half a strawberry with a chocolate heart decoration. “And why not add a dash of chocolate sauce and cocoa powder for good measure?” he suggests. For the starter course he provided a fresh, zingy crab and avocado salad layered high and accompanied by a sweet mango salsa and fresh basil. Who would have guessed that a teaspoon of brandy

could be added to this dish? Staying with the ocean theme, Bermudian chef Keith DeShields of Cambridge Beaches shared his tips for Baked Bermuda Spiny Lobster with Five Spiced Butter and Chorizo Mashed Potatoes. Well why not? We might as well make the most of the season. What’s more, your lover will be impressed with the beautiful presentation of this course. The Waterlot’s Chicken Wellington is more than enough to warm the heart. This delectable dish is featured on the restaurant’s Valentine’s Day menu and

brings together tender chicken with a medley of mushrooms, Madeira, shallots and herbs. So why not light up the house subtly with candles, slip on a CD you both love, sprinkle a few rose petals on the floor and fill your home not just with love, but with the beautiful aromas of a three-course meal? What could be more romantic than that? n SEE LIFE SECTION FOR FULL STORY

With Valentine’s Day just a week away, plans are being made to make sure the special person in your life feels loved. Dinner, flowers, chocolate — they are all the norm, but what if you wanted to step outside the box just a little bit? If going to see a hilarious romantic comedy sounds like fun for you and your significant other, PHC will be hosting a special screening of ‘About Last Night’ at Specialty Cinema. The movie starts Kevin Hart, Michael Ealy, Regina Hall and Joy Bryant. PHC President Jonathan Ball said the event is a time for people to come out and have a good but also to raise funds for the club’s ‘Going Home’ project. “Going Home is essentially to raise awareness and to raise funds so that PHC can utilise our field in regards to hosting football matches. FUNDS “We have made progress as far as raising funds but obviously we want to continue that momentum.” Speaking about the event, Mr Ball said: “The movie ties in with Valentine’s Day. Kevin Hart is hilarious and he definitely has a strong following. “This event is for everyone, singles or couples. If you don’t have a date, feel free to come anyway. “You will definitely have a good time. Not only will you have a good time, you will be supporting a good cause, a community club that is looking to make progress.” Tickets are $25 and include compli-

mentary appetizers from 8pm. There will be a cash bar and the movie starts at 9pm. For more information or to buy tickets, call 504-8870 or 332-7223. If going to the movies isn’t your thing, why not treat your lover to a special spa treatment. Tai Home Spa is offering couples massages for $159 for 60 minutes per couple and $229 for 90 minutes per couple. If you aren’t a spa guy but your lady is, why not treat her to a special Valentine’s Day Spa package. It’s a US party that Bermudians love! BY MIKAELA PEARMAN mpearman@bermudasun.bm

It’s a quintessentially American event, but the Super Bowl is also very big here in Bermuda. We love American football — not to mention the parties and the food that come with the big game. Super Bowl Sunday is just days away and the Seattle Seahawks will take on both the Denver

Broncos and the cold weather in New Jersey. In fact, the weather has become a big talking point ahead of the game: It will be the first time the game has been played in an outdoor stadium in a cold-weather city. And with the polar vortex lingering on the east coast, many are wondering just how cold it will be on Sunday. Here in Bermuda, the temperature won’t be a problem of course and besides, islanders will be

indoors watching the game. And there are plenty of places you can go to watch the game and catch the buzz. All the sports bars will be showing the game, including The Outback at Flanagan’s, Robin Hood and Docksiders. Strykz Bowling Lounge in St David’s is having a Super Bowl party hosted by Jugglin Jason and China and Bussy. There will be food for sale, a cash bar, two eightfoot TV screens, prizes and more.

The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity will host its annual Super Bowl party at The Deep at Elbow Beach. Ladies get in free while for men, the cost is $20. There will be food and drinks available. A tailgating party will be held at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess with big screens, favourites off the grill, buckets of beer and more. There will be options to watch the game inside or outside on the terrace. There will also

be two huge screens to watch the game, a food truck, burger toppings bar, team décor and more. A VIP pass is $50 and regular entry is $5. For more information, call 295-3000. If going out doesn’t interest you, we have the best Super Bowl recipes, lightened up a bit to fit in with your New Year’s resolutions to eat healthy. n SEE MORE SUPER BOWL COVERAGE INSIDE.

Will YOU reach out? Christmas is not always plain sailing for those Bermudians in need BY MIKAELA IAN PEARMAN & AMANDA DALE The Christmas season is about spending quality time with friend and family. But it is also an opportunity to help those who are less fortunate than ourselves. Many of us make the season all about money and presents and of course the man in the red suit — Santa. We’ve been conditioned to believe that without gifts, Santa and of course a big meal, there would be no Christmas. But what about the people who don’t have gifts, food or who don’t believe in Santa? What about those who don’t have a place to lay their head or a meal to eat on Christmas Day? Many charities help out those in need, especially around the Christmas season. If you and your family are looking for a way to give back this Christmas, here are a few options. Margaret Ward of The Daily Bread programme is working hard to make sure there is enough food for Christmas at its feeding centres. “We have asked for some funds to make sure that our feeding centres have food,” she told us “Food donations are really needed for now, not just the week of Christmas and January, they are actually needed before. “People are coming in really hungry with no income or food. If we don’t have the food, we can’t give it to them.” She continued: “If people want to donate, they can just bring in boxes of canned food.

“We need cereal, canned milk, peanut butter, tuna fish, things like that.” To help, phone the the Eliza DoLittle Society at 333-4483. Health is a gift that money can’t buy, and cancer can affect any one of us, at any time. PALS is asking for your support this Christmas. The charity provides essential home care for cancer patients, through nursing and other services, such as transportation to hospital appointments. Call 236-7257 or donate at the PALS Christmas Tree in Washington Mall. The gift of time, through volunteer work, is also appreciated. We live on one of the most beautiful islands in the world, and should never take that for granted. But our seas are in trouble due to an invasive predator. Unless we act now, our marine environment will be decimated by the Lionfish. It is essential that we eradicate and try to control this marauding army which is devouring our fish and reef ecosystems. You can choose to support the the Ocean Support Foundation (OSF) in their efforts to manage and conserve our marine environment. Call 704-5406 to contribute. On land, our furry friends also need our help. Many cats, dogs and other small animals are abandoned at Christmastime and left to fend for themselves. But thanks to the Bermuda Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), they are given shelter, food and water. You can support the SPCA’s efforts through donations, or by giving an animal a loving home. Call 236-7333. Whatever you might choose to do to help, it’s sure to make a difference. n

Friday’s the big day for huge bargains BY MIKAELA IAN PEARMAN Bigger bargains than ever before are promised as Black Friday — Bermudastyle — returns this week. Retailers across the island are armed with great offers to get shoppers excited for the start of the Christmas season. Discount hunters are expected to be lined up very early Friday morning, possibly even starting on Thursday to get

deals and steals from Gorham’s, Digicel, CellOne, Phoenix, Brown & Co, Gibbons Company and many more stores. Last year, Black Friday shoppers were lined up outside of Digicel from noon Thursday looking for deep discounts on phones. Paula Clarke, CEO of Gibbons Company wouldn’t say what time her store will open, but encouraged buyers to come out for huge bargains: “This Black Friday at

the Gibbons Company is going to be even bigger and more exciting that any of our previous Black Friday events. We are offering exceptional bargains on every single category of merchandise. It’s going to be a long day for us, but we know that this one special day is going to draw a lot of attention because we have done a brilliant job this year.” Shane Mora, marketing director of Digicel Bermuda said: “Many people look

forward to Black Friday and Digicel enjoys being a part of the shopping festivities. “This year our focus is on providing amazing deals, efficient customer service and an overall positive experience. In true Digicel fashion we also have a few surprises planned.” Black Friday is an American tradition where sales begin on the morning after Thanksgiving. n SEE FULL STORY INSIDE

COME BE A PART OF IT! STARTS MONDAY AT PORT ROYAL

It’s that time of year again. When golf’s men of the moment bring their clubs to Bermuda and reap the rewards of their bumper year. The Major winners of 2013 qualify for the endof-season PGA Grand Slam of Golf event, where even last place will earn you a cool $200,000! But as the PGA regularly tells me, it’s the hardest tournament in the world to qualify for and from Monday, three of this year’s breakout stars who in 2013 won their maiden Major will ROSE grace Port Royal Golf Course. It all starts with the pro-am on Monday before the two-round event gets under way on Tuesday. Adam Scott showed all the steel of a champion to bounce back from the agony of choking at The Open to win the Masters in wonderful fashion, complete with his own Andy Dufresne Shawshank moment when he sank the winning putt. Justin Rose turned his undoubted class into Major-winning form in an emotional Fathers SCOTT Day win where he paid tribute to his late dad, while Jason Dufner proved he is about more than ‘Dufnering’ with an unflustered display in winning the USPGA Championship. Sadly, Phil Mickelson, this year’s Open winner, has opted not to take up his invite to Bermuda and the ever-smiling Padraig Harrington (main picture) is, therefore, back to defend his title. As well as Harrington, the three newbies should get all sports fans salivating. All are poten- DUFNER tial Hall of Famers and all have the ability to go to on and win multiple Majors and star for years to come. None of them would look out of place on the Grand

Slam winners’ rosta, which boasts some of the most talented players the game has ever seen. Even before Bermuda took over as host in 2007 , Tiger Woods, Mickelson, Ernie Els, Greg Norman, Ian Woosnam, Lee Trevino and Gary Player were among those to lift the trophy. Add to that more recent winners such as Angel Cabrera, Keegan Bradley and Harrington and you’ll quickly realize the cast list is always stellar. This is your chance to see the world’s best in the form of their lives take on the sublime and stunningly scenic Port Royal course in Southampton (pictured above). It’s not only a major sporting spectacle but also a social highlight that creates a buzz across the island. Don’t miss out — head to the course and let Scott et al show you how it’s done. WHAT A NIGHT!

Bob Marley and John Lennon feted at second annual peace concert BY SARAH LAGAN slaganan@bermudasun.bm

Bermudian and international talent shone at the Second Annual Lennon Bermuda Peace Concert on Saturday night. Local artists brought an eclectic mix of Beatles, Lennon and original songs to the first half of the show while overseas acts Biggie Irie and the Fab Faux filled the second half with Bob Marley and Beatles covers. New local acts added to this year’s bill included Chris Finsness, Michéle Morfitt — who performed a beautiful acoustic song called Brothers — and Mike Hind, who teamed up with Joy T Barnum. We were treated to an extended set by the wonderfully soulful songstress Rachel Brown and a surprise performance by Heather Nova. Biggie Irie brought an infec-

tious energy and managed to connect with the audience more than any other act on the night. The crowd was up and dancing for Biggie and the Splashband’s set, which includ-

ed a medley of Bob Marley hits. Tribute was paid to Nelson Mandela when organizer Tony Brannon took to the stage to sing ‘Free’, which he wrote with fellow band-member Jimmy Duncan in 1990 on the day of Mandela’s release. The Fab Faux proved to be skilled musicians and their set included of some of the more obscure Beatles songs. Jimmy Vevino’s guitar solo on George Harrison’s While My Guitar Gently Weeps was a showstopper. The band did excellent cover versions but somehow struggled to excite the crowd, who’d had to endure several downpours. That said, they performed a magnificent set that die-hard Beatles fans in the audience clearly enjoyed. For our full review and more photos, see the Life section inside. n

With school starting in just a few weeks, parents are working hard to make sure their children are ready. Sure, you have the backpack, the lunch box and the shoes, but do you know what it really takes for your child to have a great school year? Some things are obvious, such as getting enough sleep at night and eating a healthy breakfast. But what about everything else? Setting aside an area for homework is vital and so is getting to school on time ever day. Providing your child with a healthy lunch is super important along with wearing the correct uniform. We have compiled ten tips for parents to help their children have a successful school year. We’ve chosen practical, useful advice — most of which applies to children across all age

groups. It’s important, for example, to get familiar with the school. If your child is starting primary one or kindergarten, it is so important that he/she is familiar with the school. Your child will be spending the majority of his/her time there and knowing where everything is will be key. If you can arrange a school tour, that would be a great option so that your child will not only know where his/her classroom will be, but also the bathrooms, the gym, where he/ she will be eating lunch and more importantly, where recess will be held.

Healthy lifestyle

Healthy diet and exercise — and lots of restful sleep. These are three other areas in which parents play a crucial role in the successful development of their child. A healthy diet is essential in order for a child to do well in school. That means drinking plenty of water, eating fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins. Snacks are fine, as long as they aren’t laced with sugar. Also, exercise is important. An active child is usually a healthy child, so make sure your kid is doing plenty of running around. A tired kid is a grumpy kid and a grumpy kid is one who doesn’t want to learn. Children need their sleep so that they can have a full, active day at school. This is especially important for primary one students, as there

And implementing a bedtime is not only good for your child, but it’s also good for you so that you can have adult time before you go to bed. We’ve only scratched the surface here. The annual Cup Match Classic is a huge operation and the thousands of visitors who throng to the event each year are largely oblivious to the extraordinary range of behind-the-scenes work that has to be done to make it happen. From the groundsman and the security crews to the people who put up the scaffolding for the bleachers and the men and women who provide the booze and food, organizing Cup Match is a considerable

challenge. And while the players and coaches get all the glory for what plays out on the pitch, there is a small army of islanders who go the extra mile to ensure that Bermuda’s biggest summer event runs smoothly. This year, the event will be held at the St George’s Cricket Club and over the course of the twoday game — Thursday, August 1 and Friday August 2 — the people who make their way

to the ground will gamble, mingle — and of course do plenty of eating and drinking. Have you ever wondered what it takes to put on an event of this magnitude? Who is in charge of the sound system? Who makes sure the Crown and Anchor tables are organized? Who gets to choose the people who run the Crown & Anchor tables? Who sorts out the food vendors? Who makes sure the cricket pitch is perfect? What about the commentators and

Fathers helping their children succeed Nadanja Bailey, Tyler Butterfield and Gita Blakeney-Saltus speak on how their dads influenced their lives by being an example and through clear words of wisdom By Mikaela Pearman mpearman@bermudasun.bm

On Sunday, we will celebrate the most important man in many of our lives, our fathers. He has been there from day one — guiding us, giving us advice and most importantly loving us unconditionally. We spoke to singer Gita Blakeney-Saltus, funny man Nadanja Bailey and triathlete Tyler Butterfield on their fathers. We asked them the same three questions: What is the best advice your

father gave you?; What trait have you inherited that you are grateful for and why?; and what is your fondest memory of you and your father? Ms Blakeney-Saltus said her father, St Clair Blakeney, has throughout her life imparted much advice and counsel, but “the most precious to me is his advice as it pertains to handling adversity. “He always advised me that even in the worst of times I should always carry myself with dignity and that my appearance should always

be a reflection of how I want to be perceived. He encouraged me to see the best in people, and advised that I should treat people of all walks of life with respect.” Mr Bailey said his father Wendell ‘Shine’ Hayward told him to go to college to get a degree but “do what you makes you happy and what you love to do. Mr Bailey added his dad told him to “make a lot of money but

while your making it, you got to spend it as well, because when you die it all goes to your ungrateful children.

Tyler Butterfield spoke lovingly about his father Jim Butterfield Tyler said his dad told him to “work hard and follow your dreams, but above all be honest, kind and a gentleman. “You will be known for how you do things as much as what you do. I love that my dad has taught me to be

honest. I am thankful for this trait, as I couldn’t imagine going through life with secrets or hiding things. “I would be hard pressed to pick one memory as my fondest. However I am always happy when I make my dad proud.” n SEE FULL story inside.

across the island have been invited and there will be close to 2,000 eggs hidden for the sugar-hungry youngsters to find. The event will take place at Camden in the Botanical Gardens. The Easter Egg Hunt was previously hosted by Dame Jennifer Smith while she was Premier, but it hasn’t been done in many years. Premier Cannonier explained why he decided to hold the event: “For me, it’s an exciting time. I love kids and it gives me a chance to dress down a little bit and enjoy what’s important. It brings a smile to your face. “All of Cabinet will be managing this. It’s bringing realism to what we do. Our job is to set the founda-

tion for the country. When we can interact with our young people, it makes life worthwhile. This is our way to be able to give back.” The event will bring together hundreds of preschoolers in one environment, Camden. Premier Cannonier said: “I don’t know of any event that brings this many kids together. “I still like an Easter egg. I still Cannonier like a jellybean. They set the quota at four eggs per child and I’m going to be out there snatching some eggs”, he said with a laugh. In addition to the hunt, there will be a DJ playing music, fun castles, face painting, cupcakes, cookies and more. Asked why only government preschoolers were invited, protocol officer Debbie Pitt said: “Because it’s a government event, we tend to go to

with government schools. “We would have been afraid to go outside because the numbers would be crazy.” Premier Cannonier says he will be getting his face painted. “As we transform government, how we do things, it’s important that we inject some fun back into what we do. It hasn’t been done in a long time and its now time for us to revitalise something like this.” “I can’t say I’m the author because it was done before, but it’s time to bring it back. “We don’t need to spend a lot of money to have fun. This is about the interaction of people, which has a far more lasting impression than chocolate.” Parents must RSVP to attend and are encouraged to bring a blanket for their child to sit on. Children must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. n SEE FULL story inside.
