Kamala Simons & Nakia Smith November 10, 2013 Ceremony and reception Christ Church, Warwick and Harbourview Ballroom at Fairmont Hamilton Princess. Theme Purple peacock. Three words to describe your wedding day Classic, elegant, fun. Bridal attire Kamala wore an alabaster coloured Sophia Tolli off-the-shoulder dress with hand-beaded lace appliques. The satin A-line skirt draped into a pick-up chapel train with a functional corset. She finished off her ensemble with a pair of Ivanka Trump “Nanci” open-toe pumps topped off with a decorative embellishment on the toe. For the reception, Kamala changed into a custom-made white chiffon dress with a beaded empire waist and beaded spaghetti straps and corset back. She slipped into a pair of Betsy Johnson, blue-soled heels with rhinestone detail on the three inch heels. Attendant attire The bridesmaids wore Alfred Angelo floor-length satin dresses with a sweetheart bodice. Flowers Petals created the elegant hand-tied posy of green spider chrysanthemums and ivory roses accented with purple dendrobium orchids and peacock feathers for the bride. The bouquet was finished off with a lavender ribbon and pearl-headed pins. Sticking with a purple
theme, Petals created vases filled with dendrobium orchids and a floating candle for the table centrepieces. Entertainment The couple made sure their guests were entertained throughout the event with music from Wendell “Shine Hayward, Sia Spence and Lloyd Holder, violinist Christopher Darrell, DJ Donnie and H&H Gombeys Favours Guests went home with personalized mini water bottles and peacock-themed tissues. The details Fairmont Hamilton Princess catered the wedding with a sophisticated take on Bermudian favourites including baked chicken, potato salad, seasonsed rice and Bermy mac ’n’ cheese. The couple also created a special drink called the Purple Peacocktail in honour of their wedding theme. The peacock theme also showed up in the couple’s dessert. Their cake consisted of a three layer cake surrounded by 250 cupcakes with edible peacock feathers as embellishments created by Sugar Rush Cakes. Instead of a guest book, the couple asked guests to sign their names on a canvas print wedding tree leaf. n

December 30, 2013 Ceremony and reception Southampton Seventh Day Adventist Church followed by a breakfast reception at Fourways Inn. Theme The couple was inspired by the holiday season and went for a winter wonderland theme with the colours navy and silver. Bridal attire Taniesha selected a dress from France B Pronuptia bridal boutique in Montreal. The ivory ball gown from the Allure Romance Collection was created from layers of soft organza. The bodice featured cap sleeves and a covered back all in delicate lace with the waistline accented with a ruched band. Accessories In the tradition of something borrowed, Taniesha wore her mom’s fingertiplength beaded embroidered veil layered over a one-tier cathedral length veil from David’s
Bridal. She topped it off with a beaded tiara, which had also been worn by her mother when she got married. Favours At the church, guests received three different packaged wedding favours in white, navy and ivory boxes filled with chocolate kisses, Jordan almonds and truffles. Food The couple opted for a breakfast reception, which included codfish and potatoes with all the fixings. Guests were also treated to a blue velvet wedding cake with matching cupcakes with white and silver trimmings to match the wedding theme. The details Phillip drove Taniesha to the reception in a classic Morgan with Just Married ribbons tied to the back. Taniesha had fun waving to passing traffic as her veil blew in the wind. n
Shelby Williams & Christopher Edwards May 10, 2014 Ceremony and reception Lands’ End Inn, Provincetown, Massachusetts Theme Shelby the flowers on the cake be yellow roses, so the yellow theme took a life of its own throughout the rest of the wedding. Three words to describe
your wedding day Special, fun, relaxed. Grooms’ attire Shelby and Christopher wore matching suits with yellow waistcoats that they had purchased in London. Entertainment Because of Provincetown’s strict
no-noise ordinance after 8.30pm, the couple opted to hook up their iPod to the hotel’s stereo system and play DJ for the evening. Their first dance was to Barry White’s, “You’re the First, the Last, My Everything”. The details A good friend of the couple officiated the wedding, so they were able to incorporate all of the important details during the ceremony, which took place in the Inn’s garden overlooking the bay in Provincetown.
Because it was a destination wedding, Shelby and Christopher wanted to make sure their guests felt like they were on vacation. As a welcome dinner, the couple hosted a traditional clambake the night before the wedding and a Sunday hangover brunch after the wedding. They booked out the entire inn for their 35 guests, so they were able to spend time with everyone during the weekend. It was low-key and exactly the way they envisioned their wedding day. n

The dress featured a sweetheart neckline and corset back with a little frill at the bottom. Her Benjamin Walk Collection heels were also ordered from Occasions, although she didn’t spend much time in them once the couple hit the reception. Jewels Heather topped off her outfit with a stunning array of new and borrowed jewellery. Her something borrowed included pearl earrings and a gold rope necklace with diamonds belonging to her aunt. Her something blue consisted of a sapphire ring. Attendant attire The bridesmaids wore classic summer dresses from the Jordan collection at Occasions in a coral colour. Hair and makeup Catarina DeCouto from Salon Visage styled Heather’s
hair into an elegant updo topped off with a diamond accent piece to complement her dress. Donika York by Basic Beauty Bermuda created the makeup looks for each bridesmaid, allowing them to express themselves show off their individual personalities. Photographer Moongate productions captured the couples day and also set up a photobooth, which got guests interacting. Favours The couple opted to make a donation to PALS in lieu of wedding favours on behalf of those who could not be there to celebrate their wedding day. The details Heather’s father built three cedar signs and had them painted by local artist, Becca Martin, that were featured at the wedding. One said, “Wedding”, with an arrow; one said “Happily Ever After Starts Here”; and one said, “Today two families become one, please pick a seat not a side”. To honour the groom’s mother, who had passed away, the couple had a memory pillow with pictures that was present at both the ceremony and reception. n

Ceremony and reception Tom Moore’s Tavern. Theme Velina tapped into her creative side to create a DIY wedding. She used Pinterest to help create ideas around her colour palette of gold, navy, cream and white, which the guests were all required to wear. Because the wedding was small, Velina wanted everyone to feel like they were part of the wedding party. Bridal attire Velina’s strapless, taffeta mermaid gown with beaded appliques on the bust and hip featured a ruched bodice with a corset back was from David’s Bridal Collection. She took her DIY skills to her Nine West gold, silver and bronze strappy heels by painting the bottoms with gold glitter. Jewels To keep with the theme of something borrowed, Velina borrowed her cousin Nicole Williams-Smith vintage pearl and white gold earrings from Crisson Jewellers. For her something old, she borrowed her co-worker Phylis Virgil’s pearl necklace from when she had married 10 years before and her something blue was a sapphire and diamond bracelet from the groom’s mother. Flowers Velina created her centrepieces and bouquets from silk hydrangeas bought from the Island
Shop and added coffee filters and tissue paper to create the effect she was looking for. Hair and Makeup Julianna Smith created Velina’s elegant updo, while Christopher Vee worked his magic to great a soft natural look with a pop of fuchsia lipstick. Food Friends of the couple provided a chocolate fondue fountain with marshmallows, heart-shaped pineapples and strawberries. Their cake was designed by Talia Simons and featured chocolate, red velvet and vanilla layers. Favours Guests went home with red velvet cake pops decorated in navy, white and cream created by Navi Delytz as well as the glittered wine bottle centrepieces that Velina created. The details Adding to the DIY theme of the wedding, the couple had guests sign their guest book by printing their thumbprint in green or gold in the shape of a tree and signing their name. Velina also made props and used disposable cameras to create the photobooth to create priceless memories. On the tables, Velina also left origami fortune tellers (like the ones they used to make in primary school) with questions and facts about the bride and groom. To end the evening, guests lit sparklers. n

H
e’s the practical graphic designer and she’s the starry-eyed coffee shop girl. But together they are the anchor and the star and managed to pull off a stunning wedding in just five weeks. Stephan Johnstone proposed to Shalini Tucker in January of this year and they decided to get married in March. And while the planning had its up and downs, with a bit of creativity and resourcefulness the two created the wedding of their dreams. “I don’t think we would have done anything differently had we had more time,” says Shalini, when the Bermuda Sun sat down to speak to the couple about their wedding day after they won the Fairytale Weddings cover bride competition. “We would have probably spent more money,” quips Stephan.
And making sure they were able to celebrate an amazing day together with family and friends without out breaking the bank was incredibly important to the couple. Stephan is a freelance graphic designer while Shalini is partowner of Dangelini’s coffee shop, so the two wanted to make sure that each element of their personality was incorporated into the day. Stephan wanted to make sure that the arts were a large part of the day, while Shalini wanted the food to be extra special. They were both lucky to have friends, who were able to help them out on many aspects of the day, many of them giving up their services as a wedding gift to the couple. “The chef at Dangelini’s came to me and said if you purchase all of the items you need for the food, we will cater your event for you and that will be our
wedding gift to you,” says Shalini. It was offers like this that helped them pull together their day. A friend let them borrow his house for the wedding and Shalini’s maid of honour, Keri Masters, is a hairstylist at Salon Pink and did the wedding party’s hair. “We just know a lot of people who are in the right industry,” says Shalini. “We weren’t asking for help but people just offered us the help,” adds Stephan. “We knew what we wanted to spend money on and what would be important to us,” Shalini says. Other ways the couple managed to keep costs low included asking their guests to bring a bottle of their favourite alcohol for the reception. “All of our family and friends helped out in so many different ways that we didn’t want them to feel like they need-
ed to bring a gift,” explains Shalini. They had friends bartend and their guests came through to make it an extra special party. For the guest book, the couple’s friend Trevor Todd created a 60in by 60in painting with the star and anchor logo that Stephan had created for the wedding and guests were asked to sign the piece. It now hangs in the couple’s home as a beautiful reminder of their perfect day. Stephan is also a spoken word poet and has close ties with the Chewstick Foundation, so the couple had an array of talented friends at their fingertips to provide entertainment throughout the evening. “It was very epic,” says Stephan. “The best party I have ever been too.” Adds Shalini: “It was such a perfect reflection of us.” n

With sweeping views of Hamilton and a beautifully manicured space just perfect for an intimate wedding, Fort Hamilton offers a unique setting for your special day. According to Kevin Smith, Corporation of Hamilton events and marketing coordinator, the park has been well-maintained by the parks superintendent Steven DeSilva and his team to enhance the location’s suitability for a wedding.

“The environment is designed for an intimate wedding,” explains Mr Smith. “It’s is a beautiful green space that is perfectly suited for a wedding.” The professional horticulturists and gardeners take pride in the appearance of the City’s parks, so even though the space can be used to design your dream wedding the utmost respect of the environment is required, adds Mr Smith. “We hold events at Fort Hamilton all the time and the space can be decorated as one wishes within reason. We request that people respect the environment and the work that has been done to maintain the space,” says Mr Smith. “Don’t leave any lasting impressions,” he adds. While the Corporation of Hamilton has held several events at the location, there have been only a handful of weddings making it a bit of

And as it is off the beaten track, it can really be a very private location for an intimate event. “Couples can hold both the ceremony and the reception all in one location,” says Mr Smith. “The view from there is so serene, relaxing and peaceful.” Maintaining the peacefulness surrounding Fort Hamilton is also an important point for those couples that are interested in holding their wedding at the park. The event must be over by 11pm, as it is in
a residential location and noise must be kept to a minimum out of respect for those living in the area. But the views and the beautifully maintained landscape are perfect for those looking for something a little different for their special day. n

I recently attended a wedding where the bride and groom requested that people not post pictures on social media. They had a very tasteful sign in clear view at the outdoor ceremony that fit in with the rest of their tastefully thought-out wedding. I asked the bride what her reasons were for choosing to ask her guests not to post on social media and she listed a couple of reasons.
Control
First, she wanted to be able to have control over what pictures made it out into the world. Maybe it’s the control freak in some brides, but there’s also the importance of your guests being there and part of the moment. However, the flip side of social media is that many people do like to share with the world their day. Some couples have even created their own hastags so they can the crowd source their favourite candid shots that have been posted by their friends and family.
