KPMG aims to attract ‘best and brightest’ SUBMITTED BY KPMG At KPMG, we provide several programmes to attract the best and brightest people. In addition to our very active graduate-focused programme, KPMG offers a scholarship valued at $20,000 per annum for three years. Awarded by the Partners of KPMG in Bermuda, this scholarship is given to a Bermudian student pursuing a career as a Charted Accountant (CA) or Certified Public Accountant (CPA). The response is typically very large, with more than 50 applications reviewed this year. A third of these candidates will progress to an interview stage.
Personality While the scholarship is intended to provide financial assistance to students towards the completion of an undergraduate degree, the selection committee focuses on academic achievement, personality, leadership and involvement in the community. There are certain criteria that need to be met to be considered for this scholarship. These include: ■ Maintaining a minimum GPA of 3.0 ■ Possessing Bermudian status

Butterfield offers two $25,000 awards SUBMITTED BY BANK OF NT BUTTERFIELD & SON LTD At Butterfield, we are committed to supporting our local community and investing in the development and education of our young people. Each year we provide two scholarships for deserving students: The Sir Harry D Butterfield Scholarship (for undergraduate studies); and the Sir A Dudley Spurling Scholarship (for graduate studies). Each are valued at $25,000. The Sir Harry D Butterfield Undergraduate Scholarship is awarded to any Bermudian student commencing, or already pursuing, an undergraduate degree overseas at an accredited university. The 2011 winner was Daniel Andrade, who is currently pursuing a degree in actuarial science at the University of Toronto.
Criteria The Sir A Dudley Spurling Postgraduate Scholarship is awarded to any Bermudian student commencing or pursuing a postgraduate degree at an approved university abroad. Our 2011 winner was Clarika Weldon, who is pursuing a four-year PhD programme at the University of Leicester, researching genes in relation to cancer cell survival. Each year, Butterfield selects scholarship recipients from among hundreds of deserving applicants. Criteria used in selecting scholarship recipients include: Academic achievement; financial need; character; leadership qualities; civic attainment; and involvement and achievements in non-curricular activities, including the arts and sports. If you or someone you know is interested in applying for a Butterfield scholarship, our advice is to not leave it until the last minute. The application requires
personal information and details of scholastic achievements, extracurricular involvement and the financial data of the applicants’ parents (or guardians). Applicants can download the necessary forms from the Butterfield website at http://www. bm.butterfieldgroup.com/ About/Community/scholarships/. Applicants must be Bermudian students who have completed at least five years of schooling on the island. Note that a high school certificate is not enough to prove completion of five-years of schooling in Bermuda. We require a letter from the school, addressed directly to Butterfield, that verifies the applicant’s years of schooling. Applicants must provide original documents as requested and ensure that the completed application and full documentation is mailed or hand-delivered by 5pm on the last Friday in March. Pay special attention to the presentation and proofreading of your application. Also, allow yourself sufficient time to collect the various documents required and for the postal service to deliver the package. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered. Bermudian students interested in a career in accountancy can get a headstart with PricewaterhouseCoopers. The firm’s Peter Mitchell Scholarship offers a $20,000-a-year renewable scholarship to support undergraduate or graduate students who have completed at least one year of study. The award is part of the firm’s HeadStart initiative, which aims to equip future finance professionals with all the skills they need to forge a successful career on the island. PwC states: “It’s a relationship building initiative that will provide support and assistance to you as you start out on your professional career — regardless of whether you’re in our Mentoring, Scholarship, Co-op, Summer Internship or Associate programme.”
Dynamic HeadStart focuses on developing strong interpersonal skills and teamwork, helping you to progress in your career. Core competencies include technical/professional knowledge, leadership skills, courage and integrity, relationshipbuilding, project management and self-development. The scholarship itself includes guidance and support from a PwC mentor and the opportunity to take part in the company’s Summer Intern programme and Associates programme upon graduation. Debbie Byrd, manager of Workforce Planning and Development, says BHB works diligently to encourage students in our community to choose healthcare occupations. “Our programmes begin when we invite primary school children on tours of the hospital,” Ms Byrd said. “This is followed up by staff members who visit private and public secondary schools to present healthcare-related lectures and discuss available

Registration Students can browse the site to review the many options available to them, and when they have selected the scholarships meeting their educational criteria, they can register online to apply. Students need to complete a profile application form, and once that has been completed and all the necessary documents have been uploaded, they can apply at the click of a mouse.
This year students may be able to upload their school transcripts directly to their profiles from their school office, using QuoVadis digital certification methods. This ensures that the entire process is confidential and that each student’s private information will only be shared with the award providers selected. degree, Shanay went on to earn her Masters’ degree from the University of Hartford. She then returned to Bermuda and accepted employment as a physiotherapist at the hospital this year. Shanay says she chose physiotherapy because she has always wanted to give back to her people and make a difference in healthcare for the Bermudian community.

In 2002, she applied for a BHB scholarship, and in conjunction with GlaxoSmithKline, was awarded more than $25,000 during a two-year period to pursue a degree in healthcare. On her scholarship application, Shanay expressed a passion for the field of physiotherapy and made a commitment to return to the island and serve her community by working at the hospital. After completing her studies at the American International College, where she earned a Bachelor’s

ACE your way into the insurance industry SUBMITTED BY THE ACE FOUNDATION — BERMUDA The ACE Foundation — Bermuda offers two education awards for Bermudians interested in entering the insurance industry. The Robert Clements/ ACE Scholarship has provided financial support to more than 20 Bermudian university students since its establishment in 1996, enabling them to complete insurance-related degrees and pursue careers in the international insurance industry.
Aptitude The fully-funded scholarship is awarded to qualified students studying full-time towards an undergraduate or graduate degree in insurance, risk management, actuarial science or other disciplines related to the industry, eg. corporate law, finance or economics. The award includes tuition and fees, room and board, text books, roundtrip airfares from Bermuda, and employment opportunities. This scholarship is

Scholarship recipient, was selected out of 51 candidates for the award. The 17-year-old graduated from CedarBridge Academy with a near perfect grade point average of 3.98, the highest GPA in the school’s
history. Andrew commenced a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in economics at Mount St Vincent University in September 2011, and once completed he plans to return to Bermuda to work as an underwriter. Scholars are expected to seek employment at ACE during university breaks to gain relevant work experience in the company’s insurance or reinsurance operations. They may apply for the Summer Internship Programme (SIP) and the ACE Student Employment Programme. Scholars are also invited to take advantage of learning and development opportunities, as well as the chance to network with ACE employees and executives. Recipients must be willing to return to Bermuda on completion of their studies to pursue a career in the insurance industry. The 2009 scholarship winner was Alexandria Tatem. The scholarship helps to fulfill the BZS mission of ‘Educating tomorrow’s environmentalists’. The non-profit organization provides year-round free science classes for more than 6,000 local students every year. ■

Teleza has spent the past two summers as a dental assistant intern and took advantage of work-shadowing opportunities at school to ensure that it was the right career choice for her. Award recipients are invited to seek employment at ACE during university breaks if relevant work experience is available. Students in Devonshire can win $5,000 towards their education thanks to a scholarship programme from the parish council. This is the second year of the Devonshire Parish Council Undergraduate Scholarship, which offers an award of $5,000 plus two bursaries of $2,000. The inaugural scholarship scheme attracted 15 applicants last year, and this year organizers are hoping for even more. Undergraduates must be studying at an overseas college or university and be a resident of Devonshire for at least five years. Financial need will also be taken into consideration. Kimberley Caines, Devonshire Parish Council scholarship committee chairman, said: “We were

sion to assist. We wanted to contribute to the local residents in a tangible way, to assist them in reaching

These are challenging times and if we are in a position to assist as a council, what better way than through education. Around the world, people say that if you want to secure your future generation, education is the key. “Last year when the scholarship programme was launched, we got a really good response and met some amazing individuals. “We were so pleased and excited to see young Bermudians doing positive things with CAINES their lives. It was also interesting to see an array of individuals following different disciplines, such as forensics, interior design and architecture. “Most of the applicants were not pursuing the main professions on the island, such as insurance and accountancy. And all of them wanted to come back to Bermuda to further their involvement in the local community, so that was
encouraging. I hope this year we can reach out to let other Devonshire residents know that we have a scholarship available for young Bermudians.” Last year, Shawnae Brangman, a graduate and deputy head girl of Warwick Academy, won the $5,000 scholarship. Ms Brangman started studying social work at Arizona State University in September. She impressed the committee not only with her academic results but also her extra-curricular activities. These included dancing with the Jackson School of Performing Arts, representing Bermuda in athletics, and being a mentor for YouthNet. The first bursary recipient was Masen O’Brien, a graduate and head boy of Bermuda Institute. Mr O’Brien started his biochemistry degree at Oakwood University, Alabama, in the fall and
wants to become a forensic scientist. He is a member of the National Junior Honour Society and National Honour Society, and is also active in his church and the community. The other bursary recipient was Kejon Sampson, a 2009 Berkeley Institute graduate who is studying for a degree in architectural building and engineering technology at the New England Institute of Technology, Rhode Island. Mr Sampson is a volunteer at the CREST: Centre on Angle Street and is a decorated drummer and drum leader with the Centre’s Drum Camp. He played football with Dandy Town Sports Club and was a member of the Junior League Bowling Team and National Team. ■

Bermuda Health Foundation scholarships BY LAVERNE FURBERT Ten years ago, brothers Philip Butterfield, Vincent Hollinsid and Dr Ewart Brown, along with their friend, the late K Murray Brown, formed the Bermuda Health Foundation. The aim was to honour Bermudians who have provided outstanding public service. The mandate — to create a foundation for future generations. The founders saw the need to provide scholarships for Bermudian students aspiring to careers in the medical field. Since 2004, 28 Bermudians have been awarded Bermuda Health Foundation Scholarships. One of the first recipients of a Bermuda Health Foundation Scholarship was Satinah Furbert who obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree at Hampton University.
Opportunities Satinah is currently employed in the Diagnostic Imaging Department at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital. While Satinah was one of the many Bermudians, male and female, who studied nursing, other Bermuda Health Foundation recipients are enrolled in other areas of medicine at various universities, including St George’s University in Grenada, Dalhousie University in Canada, Howard University in Washington, DC, and King’s College in London. Chinue Pitcher was awarded a scholarship in 2005. She began her medical studies at St George’s University in Grenada. She graduated in 2009 and since that time she has met her residency requirement in both the United Kingdom and the United States. Another Bermuda Health Foundation Scholarship winner, Rache Somner, completed a Bachelor of Science Degree at Dalhousie University in Canada.

HEALTHY START: Bermudians can get a headstart in their medical careers, thanks to the Bermuda Health Foundation. Upon graduation, Rache was offered a position at a hospital in Canada, however, not before completing her final practicum at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital in the emergency department. Kaye-Ann Newton, completed Internal Medicine residency training at Howard University in Endocrinology. She is hoping to be Bermuda’s first endocrinologist upon completion of her studies. One of the few men to have been rewarded a Bermuda Health Foundation Scholarship is Joseph Saunders, who studied at King’s College in London. He was recently attached to National Health Service hospitals in London and Kent, performing baby deliveries and other OBGyn duties. In addition to his medical studies, Joseph also studied foreign languages, including Spanish, Thai and Burmese. He participated in a research project in Thailand. The Bermuda Health Foundation invites applications for the 2012 Scholarship awards. Applicants must satisfy the following requirements: ■ Proof of Bermuda status;
■ Proof of the successful completion of the twoyear Associates Degree Programme at Bermuda College, or the successful completion of the second year of an approved college
or university (60 credits); ■ Original transcripts from the college(s) attended; ■ Two letters of recommendation; ■ Proof of admission to an accredited college or university including the area of study; ■ Letter from the college or university supporting tuition fees. Applicants should also submit a letter (including name, address and contact information) outlining why they believe they should be a recipient of this scholarship. We’ve all heard the stories about them. They’re rumoured to creep up on you in the middle of the night. It’s been said that they will bring their entire group of friends into your room at 3 am. You’ve heard they will steal your food, borrow your things and act like your room is their personal playground. There’s even a scary movie dedicated to them. The name of this creature that roams the Earth is someone you’re going to meet on your first day of college: The roommate. Here’s a guide to avoiding nightmare situations with the person you'll be sharing a small space with for an entire school year. Utilize your ‘get-toknow-your-freshman-class’
resources. Chances are your soon-to-be-home will have resources for freshmen either made by administrators or fellow students. There’s usually a student Facebook group for the ‘Class of 2016’ or there will be some type of online meetand-greet where you can find fellow freshmen who are of your same major, hometown and so on.
Random People who don’t know anyone will always be looking for roommates on these networks. Choose someone you know, but don’t. The advice people will give you about living with your best friends is true — don’t do it. An alternative is to choose someone you know and like but aren’t attached at the hip with. Living with your all-time favourite person might seem fun, but after fights
about sharing food, what time the lights go off and bringing people back to the room, an awkward end to that friendship can be near. As a happy medium, try living with someone who you’re friends with but don’t know too well. You’ll have more time to get to know each other and won’t be freaked out at the thought of living with a total stranger. You’ll have a few things in common and will have that connection from home, which will be nice during the transition to college. Plus, when your friends have trouble with their roommates, you can be the dorm where they sleep to get away for a night, and not the roommate they are trying to get away from. Be gutsy and go random. When people talk about their random roommate, most people will bring up horror stories. But in real
life, every roommate isn’t going to be a nightmare. For freshmen who want to start off nice and fresh after high school, this is a viable option. College is a time to explore, and you can start by living with someone different and new who is in your same shoes: not knowing anyone on campus. While your new friend might have some quirks, you won’t have to worry about ruining a friendship. Don’t judge him or her based off their Facebook page, as they are almost always different in person. Having a roommate is never going to be a completely smooth experience. Whether you decide to bunk with someone you know or a total stranger, you’re always going to be risking running into differences with the person. However, that is just one of the essential college experiences. ■

Although most students come to Columbia with clear interests, he says, the benefits of core classes are still present. Another concern with UK standards is that flexibility is out of the question.

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a recent trend among college students and it has nothing to do with fashion or even music. In the last five years, the number of students from the US attending universities in the UK has increased by 30 per cent, according to Britainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Higher Education Statistics Agency. A large reason for this is the significantly lower tuition costs of schools throughout the UK compared to private or outof-state schools in the US, says Kate Norman of the British Council, an organization promoting educational opportunities and cultural relations abroad. For example, the University of Edinburgh in Scotland is ranked 20th in the world, according to the 2011 QS World University Rankings, a UK-based ranking company. The cost of undergraduate tuition in the humanities per year for international students at Edinburgh is $28,000,

CAPITAL: Tower Bridge and the River Thames in London. including room and board. Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, is ranked 24th by QS and tuition costs $41,592. But the total annual cost, including room and board, books and other fees could total as much as $58,429, according to Northwesternâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s website. Schools in the UK may be more affordable, but the curriculum is also much different. In the UK, gen eds â&#x20AC;&#x201D; courses which all students, regardless of major, must
take â&#x20AC;&#x201D; are not required. Ms Norman explains that if a student is majoring in humanities, for example, he or she is not required to take a math or science course, because high schools in the UK are much more specialized compared to the US. Robert Willis, an international officer specializing in North America from the University of Edinburgh, believes this model allows for â&#x20AC;&#x153;the opportunity to specialize at an earlier stage of your degreeâ&#x20AC;?.
Job opportunities Universities donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t allow students to make any drastic changes such as switching from an English to chemistry major, unlike in American universities where schools allow incoming freshmen to declare an undecided major. The good news, though, is that students who graduate from UK schools can still get the same job opportunities in the US. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A large majority of US employers would view a candidate with a UK degree either the same or better than those with a US degree,â&#x20AC;? says Ms Norman. â&#x2013;

Preparing for college can be very stressful. Trying to figure out your future career at the same time is even worse. Everyone has interests, so why not try to turn that into your major? But what if you have no idea what to do for your future career? Some seniors say it is not that big of a deal. “I think it’s normal to not know your major; in my mind, it’s too early to know what you want to do for your career,” said Brittany Younger, a senior at Rich Central High School in Chicago. According to The Princeton Review, many students select the ‘undecided box’ when applying for college and they wait
to decide on a major later. Some students declare a major on their application, only to switch in college as their interests change. “Studies show that students change their major three to four times before they stick to one,” said Danny Mason, college advisor for the Illinois College Advising Corps.
Interests Most of the time, students can take general education classes that count toward any major, but classes for art majors differ from classes that science or business majors have to take. So, having a general idea of what you want to major in can be a huge help. Lance Jefferson, career research counsellor at Rich Central, suggests dabbling in a field you’re interested in. “Try internships or shad-
owing for programmes like ‘Future Teachers’ to see if that’s what you want to do for your intended major,” he said. Mason adds that using resources available is helpful too. “Branch out (and) talk to college advisors, tutors and upperclassmen,” he said. “Find out what classes to take to build a foundation.” Ricola Braxton, a senior at Chicago Vocational, explained how she found out that she wanted to be a nurse. “I had real life experience having to take care of my mother,” she said. “So many people said I was already good with people so I felt it just fit me.” But Lanier Zimmer, undergraduate admissions officer at University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign, said that going to college with an undecid-
ed major isn’t too bad. “I think it’s good being undecided because it’s hard to know what you want to do,” Ms Zimmer said. “You can explore more in college because it opens new doors.”

For the past five months, Austin Whitehead and Steven Pitts woke up each morning to a landscape of pines, winding rivers and changing leaves on the Appalachian Trail. Steven and Austin hiked the Appalachian Trail, or ‘AT’ in one continuous journey. They spent their days trekking 15 to 30 miles on one of the longest continuously marked footpaths in the world — measuring about 2,180 miles. The childhood friends, both from Charlotte, North Carolina, began their journey together, but split up in Vermont so they could follow the trail’s motto of ‘hike your own hike’. Steven finished November 5, and Austin on November 19. Thru-hikers typically start their six-month trip at the southern terminus at Springer Mountain, Georgia, proceeding north through 14 states. Steven and Austin took a
path less travelled and, on June 19, left from the northern end in Katahdin, Maine. Fewer than 1,000 people have reported completion of the trail on a southbound hike.
Meet the hiker: Austin Whitehead Austin, 19, a recent Myers Park High School graduate, decided to take a ‘gap year’ before attending college. Hiking the Appalachian Trail was the first segment in the gap. It “was always something in my mind I wanted to do,” he said. “As I got closer to applying to college, I had no idea what I wanted to do and I wanted more experience, so I took a gap year.” Roughly two to three million people visit the AT each year, according to the trail’s site, and about 1,800 to 2,000 people attempt a thru-hike. Only one in four completes it. “Rain or shine, cold or hot, it’s very ritualistic,” Austin said about the hike.
“It’s not always an adventure. It’s meditating.” One of his more difficult stretches came when Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee hit the East Coast. Day after day, Austin woke up to drenched belongings, and hiked through constant rainfall. “It’s so much of a mental battle convincing yourself to take the next step,” he said.
Solitude Austin met other thruhikers on the trail for company. In mid-October, he spent time travelling with a hiker headed to Atkins, Virgina, where he set a personal-best day of 33 miles. It was his 19th birthday. “I never (felt) lonely, but I have learned to appreciate conversation,” Austin said. That night, Austin said he was looking forward to catching sleep in a threesided shelter, which are common on the trail. There are more than 250 three-sided shelters placed along the trail to relieve
hikers, according to the AT website. As he approached the structure, the last thing he wanted to see was rowdy campers. His blog: “I came in and was greeted by a barking dog. The picnic table was littered with stuff and a big flashlight sat on the table: To me this meant a shelter full of obnoxious people and a long night, but then I realized that it was my dog (Sandy) that was barking and my family that was holding the flashlight!” His parents had driven to Virginia to meet him for a surprise birthday party. They hiked three miles with buckets of KFC chicken and two cookie cakes. “My mood quickly turned and a night of frivolities ensued.” On the trail he often called “from mountain tops or ridgelines where cell service is the best, or from grocery stores” while resupplying, his mother, Beth Whitehead, said. when he left, but there is a maturing that happens when a person is responsible for himself.”
Continued from page 31 “I told him before he left I would be happy if he just called to say, ‘Mom, this is the most beautiful view’.” While hiking in Virginia, Austin got a taste of ‘trail magic’ when he stopped at a laundromat to escape the cold for a few hours. He wrote: “In this short amount of time I was given leftovers from the restaurant next door, offered a ride to a nearby Dollar General, and just when I was getting ready to walk to the shelter that the town built behind the laundromat for hikers, a family in a beat-up Volvo told me to wait there for just one more minute — 15 minutes later they returned with six hot dogs, hot chocolate mix, a litre of homemade, piping hot clam chowder and some Dr Pepper. Southern hospitality is alive and well.”
Nicknames Trail name: Mismatch. Within the first 100 miles, Austin lost one of his trekking poles as he was fording a river. His mom had to send him a pole from another set. What he’ll study in college: “I have no idea... The only thing that seems to be certain is that I will not be making any money as an adult, but I am sure I will be doing something that I love.” Three things everyone should carry with them: “On trail and in life, I have found that a pen, paper and a book are worth having on my person at all times. All of these have their traditional functions... but they also open you up to the people around you.” While the allure of the AT is not for all, Austin says it was a great option for him during his gap year, especially since he is not sure about a career yet. “You can be successful by filling a mould,” he said, “but it’s much more fun to not.” Ms Whitehead said: “It is so hard to put into words what I’ve seen over the past five months. “Austin was a great kid

But I High, discovered the thrill of exploring while reading adventure novels. couldn’t.’ At 15, he began to plan a gap year to relieve his itch for adventure and hike the AT. “I grew up being a huge fan of high fantasy novels and my dad gave me my love for hiking and the outdoors. “Whenever I went camping, I felt like I was living out some of my favorite stories,” Steven said. Hiking the trail ‘seemed like the perfect way for me to have my own personal big adventure”. To celebrate the finish of his five-month hike, Steven’s family climbed to the summit of Spring Mountain, Georgia, to greet him. “The entire trek was demanding. But not in the ways I expected,” Steven said. “It demanded that I endure long days over rough terrain and often in poor weather. But it also demanded me not to take the hike too seriously and ... enjoy the sights and experiences that the trail had to offer. “Sometimes the hardest thing for me to do was enjoy myself, but once I did, the trail became a breeze.” Travelling above the tree line in New England was a highlight on the trail, Steven said. The views along the White Mountains and the Presidential Mountain Range were breathtaking. “You could see for hundreds of miles in the distance, which was really lucky because the White Mountains, particularly Mount Washington, are known for having horrible weather,” Steven said. “When I got up there, there was not a cloud in the sky.” He also stumbled upon a large field of quartz and saw the Lake of the Clouds, a body of water that sits

atop the White Mountains at about 5,000 feet. The highest elevation Steven climbed was Clingmans Dome in the Smoky Mountains, at 6,643 feet, he said. Chris Pitts, his dad, celebrated his 50th birthday by making that hike with Steven. Along the trail, Steven encountered an abundance of wildlife, including a moose in Maine and nine bears in the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. But it was an encounter with a falling tree that rattled his nerves.
The hunger “I was coming up a switchback and I heard some small rocks shifting on the ground and I thought, ‘OK, it’s a rocky section of the trail, maybe someone is coming up’. “I heard it more and I looked up and there’s this massive tree coming down right over the trail.” He had to scramble up the side of the bank to avoid being struck. “I walked up to it once I got my breath back,” he said. The downed tree was up to his chest in diameter. Like many along the trail, Steven was consumed by ‘the hunger’, as hikers call it. “It didn’t matter what you put in front of me, I ate it. I would never touch hummus, but I ate that by the bucket-full.” At a hostel, there was a leftover pizza topped with Doritos, salad, taco meat and “anything you could imagine,” he added. “I ate half of the thing.” Steven advises new hik-
ers to spend some time on a portion of the trail to become familiar with their surroundings before a thruhike, and to take it a day at a time. “There were a lot of times I really felt like quitting and I would be halfway up the trail and say, ‘I quit’. But I couldn't,” he said. It was the support of his parents, he said, that kept him going on the trail. “Whenever I was really down, they would remind me this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” Ann Pitts, his mother, said: “In this day and age, I don’t feel like a four-year college degree is for every person, and I don’t think that’s what he wanted to do after school. What a better time (to explore, when) you’re young and you have no responsibilities?” Trail name: “That depends on who you ask. Some hikers early on tried to call me Grits, for my Southern taste in breakfast. Others called me Hiccup. One wouldn’t stop tagging me as Babyface, because I shaved during my hike, which is considered unusual for long-distance hikers. “I always signed into registers as Hiccup though. That’s what I got called the most.” Steven enjoys painting with watercolours and is thinking about attending art school. ■
