An engaging learning environment which ignites excitement amongst students. A double skin facade of perforated copper panels creates a unique expression and provides comfort in classrooms through the use of natural light, and ventilation. The design incorporates pockets of outdoor gathering space throughout the school’s entirety to encourage outdoor engagement and enable students to feel open and free. This new city school is activated by its urban context through the use of public to private transition zones along Dufferin St. and aims to engage and interest the community and passersby.
GROUND FLOOR SECTION A-A’
A calm and tranquil space for students to study, relax, and gain access to resources. Outside of school hours the space is open for community use, as well as club meetings and events, such as movie night.
THIRD FLOOR
Parkour is about freedom of movement. It involves coordination of circulation paths which converge and disperse to form a grid; thus, leading to the expression of the exterior facade. The athletic centre is organized into two blocks; the training facility and service area and is connected by a transparent circulation space. The training facility provides an open triple height space for optimal movement and varying levels of difficulty upon ascension. The platforms and lighting are strategically placed to encourage traceurs to aim for the top level where they are rewarded with a clear view of the adjacent church and street below.
Create a formal connection between the street and Courthouse Square Park through a transparent bridge.
Respect adjacent residential housing by providing minimal glazing on south facade. Frame views to St. James Park & cathedral church.
The monochromatic expression of the beige interior is used to create contrast between the teal ledges & bars to emphasize the potential parkour paths.
An immersive and isolated underground performance hall, surrounded by water and lit by natural and reflective light. The design is inspired by music from Guilherme Bernardes, which instigates emotions of anxiety, mystery, and hope; therefore, light and shadow is the main design expression. The lobby features slivers of light reminiscent of the uplifting hopeful melody in the piece. Whereas the main performance space exhibits a significant skylight which pierces through the dark volume and highlights the stage. Water is heard constantly throughout the music and is thus reflected in an underground cistern directly below the performance space. This is for rainwater harvesting and filtration, which is then used as grey water, irrigation, and doubles as a water feature.
Materiality is reflective of the music’s atmosphere. Stone and concrete are primarily used to represent the cold heaviness of the solemn sections. Metal detailing also ties into the cold atmosphere and the faint metal clangs in the music’s background.
GREY WATER
This storytelling pavilion is set in a lush venetian garden. The pavilion serves as a gathering space for relaxation and exhibits stories told from around the world. The main storytelling space features a curved roof and large glazing, which gives the illusion of a floating plane. The curved form of the roof also aids in projecting the voice and music of performers, as storytelling can take the form of reading, singing, music, and dancing. The rest of the pavilion is clad in translucent panels, which create the glow of a lantern to illuminate the garden in the evening.
BUILDING SECTION
This housing design intends to create a direct relationship with existing topography and to the adjacent park through the use of diagonal movement and form. A community dance & yoga studio is used to provide performance art classes for all ages and serve as an exercise space for the nearby senior living centre. The live work units are located along Madawaska for maximised attraction, while accessibility units are found on Alice St. for immediate road access, and family units along the south with frontage to the open area for safe play.
GROUND FLOOR
Accessibility Units are situated along a quiet neighbourhood street to allow for direct vehicular access.
Family Units are located along the south with frontage to the courtyard to ensure safe play for children and private parking.
Yoga & Dance Studio located adjacent to the park for views, ventilation, and direct access to incorporate potential outdoor programs
PEDESTRIANThe dance & yoga studio features an elevated patio which overlooks the park, creating a direct relationship to the outdoor environment.
A cozy family unit featuring an open concept living, dining, and kitchen space to promote social gathering and communication. Various informal spaces are incorporated, including seating off the stair landing, a spacious transitional space on the 3rd floor for working and children’s play, as well as a balcony for relaxation.
