Design Goal
American candy design is often cheesy, complex and repetitive. The challenge is to bring a fresh look on the candy industry with design elements from Asian culture.
Create a cute brand and packaging that the consumer can interact with and last longer than the candy. The idea is to combine cute and simple from Asian design.
Target Audience
Differentiation
Although the main audience is directed towards children, people of all ages should be able to enjoy Hanikuma. It is fun, tasty and healthy with its unique honey.
Honey and chocolate candies are not entirely common. Also, the box is meant to be a collectable “friend� for all ages.
Competitors Major competitors include Hersheys and Glico products that have made their appearance in America ( i.e Pocky).

Design Goals
Design Objectives
Hanikuma’s goal is to bring Asian designs “cute” elements into a western product. It is not necessarily for kids, but it also calls out to fans of Asian culture, anime, and animal characters
Make a box that people want to keep or collect. The design should not be too childish so it can still appeal to some adults. Also to figure out a color palette that was true to Asian influences without becoming too vibrant, but also call to a vintage feel ( using cream instead of white and muted colors).
Reasoning
Outcomes
Candy design is unapealing if its not expensive. By making a cute candy, people will be interested in buying it for the appearance ( not to say the candy won’t taste awesome, because it will be). Plus collectable items are also a hit. If a child sees one they are going to want to whole set eventually. As for the colors, a lot of chocolate wrappers are a unappealing brown. Hanikuma brings a new color and association of chocolate with cute characters and becomes more than a container.
Overall Hanikuma brings out a joyful and fun appearance. The mock photos make this product come to life ( wish it was actually a product). The character and design are consistent, but still are interesting in the variations.
