Artist Statement Born in Japan, three different flavors of vanilla and a dash of Filipino spice, I can say I have seen some of the world, but crave more of it. Calling myself a designer in this book does not limit me to the computer screen, by any means. My most reliable tools are my hands on any given day. I am constantly trying to combine my fine arts practice with my digital skills. Some call me funky, cute, or quirky, but I like to call myself a builder, an illustrator and a creative that is challenging the ideas and ways of design.

Curry Ship Design Challenge

Design Solution

To create an image for a curry restaurant. Battleship Curry should come off as a modern and fun place to enjoy soul food. Utilize navy references without becoming too dated. There should be a class or simplicity as well as fun atmosphere to the overall brand. Pulling inspiration from Modern American, Heroic Realism, as well as Swiss design will bring this its ultimate port of awesomeness.

The logo has a retro Navy feel, remaining playful and curry flavored. The menu and characters add to the family oriented setting. As for the restaurant, its based on Japanese restaurants that can be found in nooks and crannies with some of the best tastes.

Cake Cafe & Bar Design Challenge

Design Solution

Whether its a long day at the office or a break from a diet, the Cake Cafe & Bar is the ultimate place to chill. The goal is to create a cafe & bar that is inspired by “zine” comic characters, as well as the culture. Create a unified brand and identity by utilizing the characters.

Pink and navy blue are the brand colors, making it not too dark, but still containing high contrast. The illustrative style adds the element of “grunge”. Throughout the menus, bags, shirts, and store are the characters faces used to establish a connected theme and energetic feeling. Most if not all pieces have some sort of box element that alludes to a comic panel.

Firdaus Design Challenge

Design Solution

Firdaus, meaning “garden, is a luxury spa with a Middle Eastern feel. The overall brand and establishment must remain clean, elegant, and soothing.

The patterns and color palette were modeled after Middle Eastern mosaics and motifs. The colors remain true to the culture while also giving a feeling of grandeur.

Hanikuma Design Challenge

Design Solution

For the most part, American candy has a standard look: bold letters, photoshoped caramel or chocolate, and primary colors. There were times that I wished for more energetic design from the. This project was a challenge to change the look and feel of American candy by bringing in Asian culture and simplicity.

Each character’s outfit, fur, and expressions change depending on the box. This opens the possibility of making a collectable set of boxes that will outlive the chocolate itself. To give the characters more dimension and play with the idea of coming to life, each box will have perforations around the ears and limbs to make the character come to life.

Hanikuma, meaning “honey bear, requries a look and feel that is energy, playful, and friendly for all ages.

Unreasonable Men Design Challenge

Design Solution

Create a solid identity around The Unreasonable Men. They have an idea of who they are but they lack a foundation.

The Unreasonable Men needed a logo, but had no direction or deeper thought into their name. They wanted to be wild, careless, and guys that gave themselves over to music. While researching, Saturn came up and is also known as the “Lord of Misrule. During a feast in his name, The Feast of Satunalia, a Lord of Misrule is appointed to be the ultimate ruler of the celebration. Also known as Chronos and something about how time and music are connected. Having Saturn as the face of the band gives way to their uncontrollable rockage.

Effect Pedals Design Challenge

Design Solution

Most if not all effect pedals have a unique illustration or type treatment. The overall concept for these pedals is to have a space theme for effects to that deliver quality that is out of this universe.

The set of pedals designed were all based on a space or celestial body theme. It gives way to sound that is out of this world or influenced by a power from the stars. As for the palette, neon colors and stark white illustrations create a great contrast. The grunge effect brings an attitude to the pedals that responds with the effects they produce.

Homemade Type Design Challenge

Design Solution

During a trip to Minnesota, I was inspired by the “Noramoji project by Rintaro Shimohama, Naoki Nishimura, and Shinya Wakaoka.

Space City: comes from a HI Fructose magazine headline.

After collecting bits and pieces of type that was either completely foreign, or unavailable, it was then time to recreate them.

Milch: The logo for Bikkle, a Japanese yogurt drink, was playful, round, and had an outgoing feel about it. The right angle corner on the bottom left was an interesting rule and challenge that I wanted to keep throughout the typeface. Dhahab: The Minneapolis Institute of Arts had an impressive collection of Middle Eastern Art. One particualr piece that was the inspiration for this typeface was a golden religious steele. Despite being unable to read the language, one can still appreciate the beautiful attention to detail, simplicity, and extreme weights.

Space Ship Installation Design Challenge

Design Solution

An installation class project called “What Was Left Behind”, challenges individuals to come up with a persona or character that could have occupied a space. For this piece I transformed the corner of the Molly Wiley Art Building into the inside of a spaceship from my comic Galactic Sadie.

I wanted to match the clean corner of the building with the space panels that would be hung up. White would give a modern and futuristic feel. Accent colors would be light or almost pastel. This color palette gives the ship a more playful and feminine.

Galactic Sadie and her two companions, Francine and Claire, are on a mission to find Earth after it was sucked into a vortex. The three girls meet strange life forms along the way, unveil dark secrets, and fight off space pirates. The are on a journey for the sake of men...I mean Earth!

This ship is made by girls, for girls. It was appropriate to have buttons and controls that were labeled “mood”, “action”, and a overloaded “sexy” button. The red accelerating handle’s labels are icons of a rabbit and a turtle to define the levels of speed. The girls are really a part of the ship and it was a goal to incorporate it in the things they touched.

The composition required to use the walls, floor, and ceiling. The floor had the computer station and shag rug, the walls had panels, and the ceiling dangled walkie talkies as if they were in zero gravity. Pink paper was implemented over the lighting to give it a soft, feminine aura. Even if the viewer is unaware of the story, there is still a feminine space theme for them to still enjoy the playful installation.
