Invited Designers
showcase cruise couture fit for the Captain’s Table Durban - Fashion crowds could only but gasp at the first-class collections that floated down the wooden runway as part of the Vodacom Durban July Fashion Experience Show presented by Durban Fashion Fair at Greyville Racecourse on Wednesday evening. Creations dreamt up by the eight Vodacom Durban July Invited Designer Showcase stars, the ten KwaZulu-Natal fashion students from the Young Designer Award and ten aspiring Fashion Challenge entrants dazzled all and carried the prestigious essence of the Vodacom Durban July. Durban’s Invited Designers Terrence Bray, Haroun Hansrot, Brenda Quin, Sibu Msimang, Colleen Eitzen, Jane Wolff and Dale McCarthy from McCarthy & Wolff, and Hangwani Nengovhela and Craig Jacobs from Johannesburg showcased their designs to the jazzy sounds of a house band, their designs gathering inspiration from everything but the ordinary. Fashion from centuries past, marine life and of course the elegance and glamour famous of the Africa’s Greatest Horseracing Event were all represented in the fashion theme, ‘The Captain’s Table’. Bray created a powerful piece of art and social commentary with his golden African princess, tapping into the anti-colonist feeling he believes South Africa is currently experiencing. “I researched the whole concept of captaining, authority and slavery and found a J.M.W Turner painting called “The Slave Ship”. The colours are vibrant and fiery with sunset tones and there’s an aggression about it that I just love. It’s quite ironic how something beautiful can be created out of something negative.” Msimang wowed audiences with her unique take on the theme, using intricate knotting accented with pops of colour through her garments and accessories. “I didn’t want to go with the obvious nautical theme choosing to use macramé, which is a knotting technique and was used by sailors to sell items they made when they docked on shore.”
Adam Boyd interviews 36 Crazy Fists ahead of their South African Tour You guys are on the way to South Africa for a show at Krank’d up fest on the 26th of September in Alberton. Which aspect of South Africa are you most looking forward to experiencing? Just meeting the people and seeing the culture, wild life and drinking the local beers. Who are your musical influences? James Hetfield, Layne Staley, Chris Cornell, Ian Astbury, Mike Patton and Jonah Jenkins What are the bands plans for the future? Tour tour tour What is one thing that you will be bringing on this tour that you cannot live without? My toothbrush What has been the pinnacle moment of your band career? Just surviving 20 years has been a tremendous feat. We are proud to still be going after it. You guys have been around for 20 years, in your experience how has the metal scene changed since the birth of 36CF? Well I’d say the kids are getting younger each year and the talent is getting better. It’s always evolving and that’s cool to see. Technology has come into play with certain sounds as well. If you had a time machine, where would you go and why? I’d go hang with my mom for a bit longer. I miss her dearly If you could collaborate with any artist, dead or alive, who would that be and why? Layne Staley. He is my favourite singer of all time and just loved what he did for music Describe yourself in 1 word. Bearded By Adam Boyd
Decades of Suppliments by Ninya van Zyl
You are what you eat! Here is a list on supplements and some beneficial advice on what to use during the different stages of your life as a woman to get that extra oomph. Eighteen to thirty-five: Multivitamins and mineral supplements – Take a multivitamin daily that provides 100 per cent of the recommended daily allowance, including a Vitamin A, Vitamin D. Consider taking an a separate supplement of Vitamin C & E, as they act as anti-oxidants fighting against the natural effects of ageing and environmental damage. Folic acid/folate – Women are advised to get 200 micrograms of folic acid. Along with your supplement, you can eat at least two folic acid-rich foods a day, like spinach, kidney beans or orange juice. Iron – Your daily recommendation of iron is around 14.8 milligrams. Without enough iron you’ll feel tired and may battle fatigue. Add daily iron rich foods to your life such as pulses, dark green leafy vegetables and extra lean meat. Calcium – Premenstrual symptoms can get worse if you are not getting enough calcium. 700 milligrams of calcium a day is what is needed which can be sourced from a supplement and calcium enriched foods such as milk, yogurt, or calcium fortified orange juice. Thirty-five to Forty: Folic acid/folate – Women are advised to get 200 micrograms of folic acid. Once you are pregnant your doctor may advise you to increase your intake. Along with your supplement, you can eat at least two folic acid-rich foods a day, like spinach, kidney beans or orange juice.
Vegetables and calcium – 700 milligrams of calcium a day is still needed at this age to keep your bones strong, but also remember to top up on the vegetables. Nutrients in fruit and vegetables decrease the risk of having low bone mass. Forty to Fifty: Fibre – a high fibre diet of certain wholegrain foods, fruits and vegetables does help to balance your oestrogen levels and can help to reduce symptoms of perimenopause. Fibre has also been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease and may lower risk of some cancers. Natural foods – Women need fewer calories as they get older. Avoid processed foods. Stick to natural vegetables, fruits and organic lean meat that is high is nutrients and minerals. Vitamin E – Taking around 800 IU of a vitamin E supplement daily may relieve hot flushes, mood swings and vaginal dryness – three symptoms that result from fluctuating hormones during perimenopause. GOT-T’S
What is Mandela day? “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead” – Nelson Mandela Nelson Mandela International Day was launched in recognition of Nelson Mandela’s birthday on 18 July, 2009 via unanimous decision of the UN General Assembly. It was inspired by a call Nelson Mandela made a year earlier, for the next generation to take on the burden of leadership in addressing the world’s social injustices when he said that “it is in your hands now”. It is more than a celebration of Madiba’s life and legacy. It is a global movement to honor his life’s work and act to change the world for the better TAKE ACTION. INSPIRE CHANGE. MAKE EVERY DAY A MANDELA DAY The message behind Mandela Day is simple – each individual has the ability and the responsibility to change the world for the better. If each one of us heeded the call to simply do good every day, we would be living Nelson Mandela’s legacy and helping to build a country of our dreams. The baton of leadership has been handed over to us. It is in our hands now to make a positive difference. 2014 is particularly symbolic as we work to honour a great statesman and make every day a Mandela Day as we mark South Africa’s 20 years of democratic freedom The message Nelson Mandela followed three rules throughout his life, which he did at great personal sacrifice: Free yourself. Free others. Serve every day. Mandela Day is a global call to action for citizens of the world to take up the challenge and follow in the formidable footsteps of Madiba, a man who transformed his life, served his country and freed his people. Its objective is to inspire individuals to take action to help change the world for the better and in so doing, to build a global movement for good. The question we must ask ourselves is what we are doing to make the world a better place; what are we doing to make every day a Mandela Day? Mandela Day is dynamic and ever-changing: it belongs to everyone and can take place anywhere, at any time. We urge everyone to find inspiration for their contribution in the legacy of Nelson Mandela and to serve their fellow humans every day How to serve every day For the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Mandela Day actions, no matter how big or small, should consistently focus on the realization or restoration of dignity and empowerment through contributions. For the Foundation the following focus areas have particular significance: THEMES: Food security All people, at all times, and should have access to sufficient, safe and nutritious foods to maintain a healthy and active life. This is a crucial social support measure for effective development and growth. Feeding activities, whether food parcels, food gardens or feeding schemes that provide long-term access to food security can transform world hunger. Education & literacy In a world where knowledge truly is power, education and literacy are the basic building blocks that unlock the gates of opportunity and success.
Page 10
We all have a responsibility as parents, as caregivers, as educators, as leaders and as citizens, to instil in individuals, children and communities the critical drive for literac y and learning so that we can give them the chance to fulfil their dreams. Let’s lead through education. Shelter & infrastructure There is no greater indignity than the absence of a place to call home. Sadly, the cycle of inadequate shelter and infrastructure can only be broken if people join together and take action to make a change. This action brings people together to build homes, communities, cities, continents and a future. Service & volunteerism Daily service to one’s fellow man, in whatever shape or form, is an action each one of us can commit to. As Madiba change makers across the globe let’s play our part by “living” Madiba’s legacy. To serve and drive the movement towards the common good and ultimately social cohesion – people everywhere are encouraged to contribute their actions to making the world a better place by each becoming a public servant in the service to humanity. Madiba was the quintessential public servant. Let us emulate the servant leader we loved by all becoming servant leaders ourselves. Lead by example.

Durban - The countdown to this year’s Vodacom Durban July has started. With 23 days to go until the biggest horse raising event on African soil, organisers say preparations are at an advanced stage. In the fashion stakes, this year’s theme, The Captain’s Table, is set to attract a more elegant, chic and well-groomed look. The Vodacom Durban July, also considered one of the leading events on the SA social calendar, takes place on the first Saturday of July every year. This year it will take place on 4 July. Event organiser Dave Mcleod said the Greyville Racecourse had been spruced up and now even boasted a new all-weather race track. “The racecourse is looking fantastic. We had a new artificial race track called the Poly track installed last year. The good thing is that it has cemented quite nicely over the last couple of months and we can now have races in any weather conditions,” said Mcleod. The event, which celebrates its 119th anniversary this year, is broadcast worldwide. “It is one of the most notable and biggest hospitality events of its kind in Africa. Last year we had one double-decker marquee and this year we have three. The marquee village space was a complete sell-out but people can still buy tickets for specific marquees. “What’s different about this year’s Durban July is that the Captain’s Table theme means that you get an invite to the ‘captain’s table’ so we can expect people to turn up in elegant, high fashion and classy outfits,” said Mcleod. Last year the event was attended by more than 55 000 people and event organisers are hoping to attract an even bigger crowd this year. “We are excited because Greyville Racecourse has had a complete make-over from the track to the fence and even the grandstands. The place has been spruced up a bit. All our walls have a fresh coat of paint. We are looking good,” said Mcleod. He said one of the most significant changes in the profile of the event was the number of people coming from outside the province. “A lot of our guests are from Gauteng and the cool thing is that when they come for the event they stay in Durban for the whole weekend. Interestingly, in 2012 Gauteng [visitors] made up 20% of our guests and in 2014, 50%... were from Gauteng,” he said. The event contributed R425m to the regional economy in 2014. This included restaurants, airfares and hotel bookings. “Of the R425m, R200m is splurged on betting on the day. “We are one of the top races in the world. The Vodacom Durban July is up there among the best races. We are more than ready for this year’s event,” said Mcleod. taken from news24.com

Kurt Darren - ‘n Sukses Verhaal buti’s inn

HEROES by Janneman Landman
ICED* Heroes is an insert focused on giving our local heroes in and around the community a little more exposure, our second local hero is Lindie Louwrens, Animal Caregiver.
Janneman: Waar sien jy Purrpaws for life in die toekoms? Janneman: Is jy spyt oor jou keuse met Purrpaws for life?

Snitte soos “God’s gonna cut you down”, “Ghost riders in the sky”, “The man comes around”, “One piece at a time”, “A boy named Sue” en “I won’t back down” smelt moeiteloos met Tas se rasperstem, warm instrumentale klanke en ryk agtergrondsang saam.

Danie: My wife supports me fully so that makes it so much easier and my boy grows up in the MMAgym and he loves it too. Janneman: What can we expect in the future from you and Team Pit-bull? Danie: To get the EFC titel and to sign EFC fighters from my gym River Square martial arts. Janneman: What advise will you give someone who wants to start with MMA? Danie: Just do it, get to a MMA gym and start. Janneman: Everyone in the Vaal knows you as one of the bouncer at Got-t`s. What is the most funniest thing you ever seen at Got-t`s.
