MANNOYAKU An Ecological Enthusiasts Sports Center

CLIENT BRIEF : RESIDENTS OF BUKIT KIARA To begin with, I started with a larger issue that has been happened regularly in Selangor. Our air pollution index, water cuts and deforestation has been increased. Amongst the most impactful problem in Selangor is the overdevelopment of buildings. For example, the overdevelopment of new condominiums in front of the Batu Caves area which where it supposed to be the whole heritage site. So, with this overdevelopment, the designated green lungs are under threat. Hence, it affected the residents of Bukit Kiara. Due to over development in Bukit Kiara, the Federal Territories Minister Khalid Abdul Samad gazetted a part of Bukit Kiara as a federal park and as a green lung, to promote a healthy living environment to the residents, and protect the flora and fauna in Bukit Kiara. With this plan by the Federal Territories Minister, I found there’s a good opportunity for the ideal of recreational park to help improve the daily life of residents of Bukit Kiara.

Therefore, the Nasional Science Center which is located at Bukit Kiara, has become the selected site for my project. The site is located in between the greeneries, where the residents do daily exercise activities, sports, and it is situated in close proximity to residential areas. Due to the overdevelopment of Bukit Kiara, there are many daily waste and chemical productions being produced by the people to the natural environment. In the end, it brings harm back to people’s health. Hence, this is why I designed this project entitled ‘Mannoyaku’, which means ‘A relief for the environment and yourself’ . It is a nature inspired Ecological Enthusiasts Centre that can protect the environment and provides an alternative exercising green space for everyone and the residence of Bukit Kiara to maintain their mental and physical health, without bringing harm back to the natural environment. Hence, it will be a win win situation. The image above shows the Narrative Board of proposed project ‘Mannoyaku’, The Ecological Enthusiast Sports Centre.

DESIGN RATIONALE The best design rationale that can help me to design an ecological alternative exercising space that can protect the environment when the public can take more active part in exercising through motion is, ‘Ecological Kinaesthesia’. The criterias for design rationale based on research are Filtration (to purify the water), Modular and Kinetic (to generate ecological hybrid energy and vertical farming system when the public take more active part in exercising through motion). Therefore, with this design rationale in the open green space in Mannoyaku, the visitors can enjoy the beauty of nature and sensory experience, like natural sunlight coming in from the rooftop, waterfall sound, vertical farming system, birds whispering, and smell the medical herbs of Gardenia Carinta. Besides that, the main material used for the interior space is stainless steel rod and wire mesh pattern material. Because, wire mesh material allows the sunlight and ventilation coming through the interior space, the visitors can see through the activities at other zones, and visually it feels very opened. Therefore, these whole things will tie in the overall ambience of Mannoyaku, the Nature Inspired Ecological Enthusiasts Centre.

Last but not least, with this design rationale of ‘Ecological Kinaesthesia’ in Mannoyaku, I believe that it will help to achieve one of Malaysia’s Sustainable Development Goals, which is ‘The Life on Land’. Well, if such exercises in public spaces exist in the future, it will inspire the public to appreciate and be with nature. Because, I believe that human beings and nature should live in harmony. As humans, our life depends on the earth as much as the forest. We can obtain a lot of resources from the environment, to survive and to live better. Ever since I realized that the environment has become more polluted as the years go by, adding to the fact that as technology has evolved, now, it is a perfect moment to contribute back to the environment and at the same time our physical health. This was why I designed ‘Mannoyaku’, the Ecological Enthusiasts Centre that can protect the environment and provides an alternative exercising green space for everyone and the residence of Bukit Kiara to maintain their mental and physical health. In conclusion, with this design rationale of ‘Ecological Kinaesthesia’, it will help to reduce the environmental problems and loss of natural habitats, to support global water security, climate change adaptation, peace and security as part of Malaysia’s Sustainable Development Goals - ‘The Life of Land’.

PROGRAMMING The programming activities that can help me to achieve the objective of my Mannoyaku project, is to have 2 major space which is, the Mannoyaku Ecological Park and Mannoyaku Forest-bathing Herbs Garden. Besides that, there are also some other areas such as Mannoyaku Hub, Vegetable Market, open green space, dufttunnel, reception, offices, and entrance.
