BOOTH UNIVERSITY COLLEGE
Our History In the earliest years of the 20th century, General William Booth, the co-founder of The Salvation Army, imagined an international university of humanity, a Christian academy focused on academic excellence and a commitment to serve those who live in poverty or on the periphery of society. The General’s vision was fulfilled nearly a century later when Catherine Booth Bible College was established in Winnipeg. Since then, our school has evolved from a Bible college into a Christian university college with a curriculum that provides a breadth of knowledge in the natural and social sciences, humanities and selected professions. In 2010, our name was changed to The Salvation Army William and Catherine Booth University College, but we’re simply known as Booth University College. Located in the heart of Winnipeg, Booth is a vibrant community of students, educators, administrators and support staff who are all dedicated to fulfilling William Booth’s century-old dream of building a university of humanity.
1981 NEARLY 80 YEARS AFTER WILLIAM BOOTH ENVISIONED AN INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF HUMANITY, THE SALVATION ARMY ANNOUNCES THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A COLLEGE IN DOWNTOWN WINNIPEG, MANITOBA, CANADA.

1982 CATHERINE BOOTH BIBLE COLLEGE RECEIVES ITS FIRST STUDENTS IN SEPTEMBER. MAJOR EARL ROBINSON IS THE COLLEGE’S FIRST PRESIDENT.
1987 THE COLLEGE ACQUIRES THE PRESENT CAMPUS AT 447 WEBB PLACE, ACROSS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF WINNIPEG. THE SEVEN-STOREY BUILDING INCLUDES A CHAPEL, CLASSROOMS, OFFICES, GYM, DINING ROOM AND A RESIDENCE.
1989 A DEGREE PROGRAM FOR OFFICERS OF THE SALVATION ARMY’S CANADA AND BERMUDA TERRITORY IS DEVELOPED. IN 2000, THE ARMY’S OFFICER CADETS ARE ENROLLED IN A UNIQUE BACHELOR OF ARTS PROGRAM AT THE COLLEGE.
1991 THE COLLEGE RECEIVES ACCREDITATION FROM THE ACCREDITING ASSOCIATION OF BIBLE COLLEGES. A YEAR LATER, IT BECOMES AN APPROVED TEACHING CENTRE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA.
BOOTH UNIVERSITY COLLEGE
BOOTH WORLDWIDE Every year, Booth welcomes students from across Canada
around the world. and
Our Ethos The ethos of Booth University College is reflected in our motto – education for a better world. As an educational expression of the mission of The Salvation Army, Booth teaches students to understand the complexities of the world, to be mindful of the Christian faith, to achieve excellence through rigorous scholarship and to become contributors to a better world. At the heart of Booth’s ethos is a set of values that speaks to our belief that we all have ethical obligations to others. We trust that our graduates will be lifetime advocates for poor and oppressed persons, raising hope, social justice and mercy to counter despair, injustice and cruelty. As Christian educators, we have faith that our grads will take on the responsibility of leadership, using the skills they acquired at Booth to serve locally and around the world, and to engage their fellow community members in building a greater capacity for positive social change.
1997 THE SCHOOL’S NAME IS OFFICIALLY CHANGED TO WILLIAM AND CATHERINE BOOTH COLLEGE.
2001 BOOTH OFFERS ITS FIRST ONLINE DISTANCE EDUCATION COURSE, WITH STUDENTS REGISTERING FROM SEVEN COUNTRIES.

CITY AS CAMPUS
OUR MOTTO Education for a better world means learning to fight despair, injustice and vengeance with
Urban by Choice & Mission Unlike many other Christian universities and colleges, Booth is an urban institution, located far from the rustic landscapes of rural Canada. This is our choice. Booth is the educational expression of the mission of The Salvation Army, which was born in the heart of a city in need. It is not our intention to be a fortress of learning. Instead, we are engaged with the society and culture of Winnipeg, seeking opportunities not only to educate our students, but also to teach them the value of providing hope, social justice and mercy to the community around us. There is a world of opportunity for service on our doorstep. Within blocks of our campus, you’ll be in contact with a host of ethnic communities comprised of people from virtually every social and economic stratum. It is this enriched urban experience, so essential to the Salvationist ethos, that you won’t find elsewhere.

CITY AS CAMPUS
Donald E Burke, PhD President
AS PRESIDENT OF BOOTH, DONALD BURKE believes there is more to education than preparing students for lives of affluence in a world in which too many others live in poverty. For him, it’s essential that Booth also educate students so they can contribute to building a better world. “As a Christian university college operated by The Salvation Army we believe that education should prepare students to work for a world in which there is greater justice, abundant mercy and bountiful hope,” he explains. To help it fulfill its urban mission, Booth has chosen to establish itself as a vital part of Winnipeg’s downtown cityscape. Donald says Booth’s inner-city setting can help bring about direct change in the lives of the people who live there. “In a world in which a growing majority live in cities, our location reflects the experience of most,” he states. “Our setting signals that we’re not cloistered, that we’re an educational community that lives and works in the heart of the city, with all its heartache and promise.”

Urban Service Learning The conviction that all Booth students should be inspired and empowered to become agents of social change led to the development of our unique urban service learning program. Every first year student – except social work students who engage in practicums – must participate in an introductory course that explores Booth’s principles of hope, justice and mercy within the context of an urban service learning experience. Focusing on such social concerns as homelessness, illiteracy and poverty, students step out of the classroom to become immersed in service to poor and vulnerable people living in the heart of Winnipeg. As well, Booth facilitates an annual Youth Forum for high school students, which is held prior to our annual Community Forum, a major event that provides an opportunity for service providers, volunteers, students and community members to discuss social issues facing Manitobans.

GENERAL STUDIES
Jan Miller, PhD
Sessional Instructor, Biology VERY EARLY IN HER TEACHING CAREER, Jan Miller discovered she had a passion for introducing students to the myriad of ways that science impacts their lives. Seeing a sense of wonder in her students’ eyes as they begin to integrate the subject of biology into their lives is inspiring to Jan, who was born and raised in Saskatchewan. “Each semester, I meet a new group of students and get to help them make connections between their actions and the environment,” Jan states. “Even students who avoided science all through high school are quickly intrigued when it becomes personal.” Because so many of our daily actions affect others in the world, it’s important for Jan to make her students aware of how globally connected we all are. Gaining an understanding of the interrelatedness of all living things is crucial, she says. “Students come to Booth with a passion for people and other inhabitants of our planet. By giving them the skills to direct their passion, they’ll be more effective in changing the world.” 12

Oneyda Sandoval-Varela, BA Alumna 2008, Bachelor of Arts
LOOKING BACK OVER HER TIME AT Booth, Oneyda Sandoval-Varela is thankful for the knowledge and wisdom she gleaned from her professors, the sense of community that came from knowing virtually everyone around her and the life-long friends she made amongst the group of young people who shared their journey together. “Some of the greatest people I know, who I’m honoured to call my friends, have come from here,” she states. “So many people from different walks of life came to Booth for one purpose, and in the end they came out more complete than going in.” Now working on an education degree at Brandon University, Oneyda credits Booth’s professors with inspiring her to pursue her own career in teaching. Oneyda says that as a group they challenged her in ways she didn’t know were possible. “The profs are awesome at Booth,” she says. “They make you look beyond the words that are written in a text, to the potentially hidden meaning that you work to find on your own.”

ENGLISH + FILM
Allyna E Ward, PhD Assistant Professor of English
BEFORE ALLYNA WARD JOINED BOOTH’S faculty of English and Film Studies in 2009, she taught at universities in the United Kingdom. The experience infused her interest in the tragedies and tribulations of Tudor history and culture. “My current research investigates the way the Tudors used and interpreted Lucan’s De Bellum Civile. My classical background teaching and researching Latin literature and philosophy has shaped my approach to literature. I try to bring all of my experiences into my teaching here at Booth,” Allyna explains. Having been steeped in classical tradition hasn’t stopped Allyna from helping create an atmosphere of innovation at Booth. She created a blog for students enrolled in her early modern literature seminars. It was an effort to eliminate overuse of paper and bring even more interactivity to already lively classes. “The small size of our literature classes is the best way for students to engage with their books and films,” Allyna notes. “I give them the space to discuss theories and themes that arise from what they’re reading or watching.”

Laura Burke
Student, BA in English and Film LAURA BURKE HASN’T HAD TO LOOK far for inspiration during her time at Booth. She just has to look to the front of the classroom where one of her professors is talking about a book, discussing a film or engaging the class in a spirited debate. For Laura, their passion for teaching has sparked her desire to learn. “The profs at Booth are passionate about their fields, but that doesn’t distract them from reaching out to their students,” she asserts. “In fact, it enhances the level of interaction between the professors and students and leads to friendships based on mutual interest and positive reinforcement.” The small class sizes at Booth create even more opportunity for students like Laura to achieve academic excellence. Laura says learning from such excellent instructors has given her more confidence. “A professor is able to adjust their assignments and expectations to help each student flourish academically. I’ve been constantly challenged to not only fulfill my potential, but to increase it with every assignment.” THROUGH BESTSEMESTER.COM, LAURA SPENT THE SUMMER STUDYING ENGLISH LITERATURE, PHILOSOPHY AND RELIGION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD. BEHAVIOURAL SCIENCES
Michael Smith, PhD
Associate Professor of Psychology MICHAEL SMITH BELIEVES EDUCATION is the single most important activity a person can engage in to expand their personal horizons and enhance their future opportunities. It’s the transformational possibilities of learning that inspire him as an educator. “Education expands the mind and helps overcome personal limitations and prejudices,” Michael says. “I teach, then, to help facilitate personal change within my students. When I see that happen, it’s a great inspiration.” To Michael, humility is a teacher’s greatest quality. Like his students, he learns something new everyday and as their guide, it’s important for them to understand this. “There is infinitely more that I don’t know compared with what I do know,” he contends. “I believe that learning is a journey for all of us in the classroom and that we’re exploring a subject together. To help facilitate personal change in my students, I try to resist giving them answers; instead, I guide their questions and discussions so that they find the answers, or the lack thereof, for themselves.”

BEHAVIOURAL SCIENCES
DID YOU KNOW? In a national survey, Booth students said they appreciate how focused the college is on their individual needs.
Bachelor of Arts Behavioural Sciences Studying behavioural sciences at Booth prepares you for life because, while the world of work may change with time, knowledge of human behaviour lasts forever. When you study behavioural sciences at Booth, you achieve a unique perspective and deep understanding of the human condition. While psychology focuses on a person’s individual development, sociology looks at people’s activities from a broader societal viewpoint. By integrating these two disciplines – through in-class study, research labs and a hands-on internship that lets you apply the knowledge you’ve gained to actual fieldwork – you’ll develop an awareness of the social forces that shape the world around us. Within the context of a Christian worldview, a bachelor’s degree in behavioural sciences offers genuine opportunities for graduates to participate in meaningful social change at the local and global levels. Armed with an in-depth understanding of individual and group dynamics, you’ll be prepared to interpret broad patterns of change and find solutions that make a profound difference in the lives of people and their communities.

Amy Gergatz
Student, Bachelor of Arts in Behavioural Sciences WHEN AMY GERGATZ GRADUATES, she’ll have a BA in Behavioural Sciences but she’ll also be educated in how to put her knowledge, skills and Christian faith into action. In addition to her studies in psychology and sociology, Amy points to Booth’s unique urban service learning program as inspiring her to reach out to those in her community who require help. “What motivates me as a student at Booth are the opportunities to stretch and challenge my thinking and Christian faith, that allow me to put what I’ve learned in class into practice in the world around me,” states Amy. “Through urban service learning (where students go into the community to serve those in need), we all become social catalysts, bringing hope and working to effect positive change in the world.” Thinking of what she’s learned at Booth that she’ll carry with her into the world as a graduate, Amy is quick to reply, “thinking creatively, critically and profoundly about issues, and being compassionate to those in need of compassion.”

RELIGION
Andrew Eason, PhD Assistant Professor of Religion
FOR ANDREW EASON, TEACHING AT Booth is more than a job; it’s a calling, a vocation that has been not only profoundly rewarding but life-changing as well. “What truly inspires me is being able to engage students on a daily basis and watch them achieve academic and personal success over the course of their study here at Booth,” Andrew explains. “I sincerely want to make a difference in the lives of my students and I encourage them to adopt the highest academic standards and to question the way they look at the world.” Teaching isn’t a one-way proposition for Andrew, whose list of degrees includes a BA from Booth. Connecting with students in the classroom, he says, has taught him the importance of building relationship with them. “I’m often reminded of the old adage that says ‘don’t tell me what you know until you show me how much you care,’” Andrew notes. “Fostering a positive and trusting environment is something I strive to achieve every day.”
24
RELIGION
Bachelor of Arts Religion By studying religion at Booth, you’ll seek to find answers to the fundamental questions that all faithful people in the world ask – who is God and why am I here? The Christian worldview – historical and contemporary – is at the heart of Booth’s religion program but you’ll also discover the sacred traditions inherent in the world’s other great religions. By combining foundational study in the Bible and historical Christian thought, and complementing it with analysis of Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and North American Indigenous religions, you’ll develop a broad understanding of the significance of religion in societies and a profound respect for the role faith plays in the human experience. By understanding the history and cultural importance of religious traditions, you’ll be able to help make Christianity relevant in today’s changing world. A degree in religion from Booth will equip you to think critically about social justice in the global community, and as such, you’ll be informed and inspired to act on creating a more tolerant world.

RELIGION
Megan Bartel, BA
Alumna 2011, Bachelor of Arts in Religion IF IT WAS BOOTH’S SMALL SIZE AND location in the heart of Winnipeg that first attracted Megan Bartel, it was being involved with people who were passionate about learning and social justice that kept her inspired and engaged. From the moment she stepped through Booth’s front door, it was obvious that she’d eventually walk out that same door with something more than an expensive piece of paper. “The education one receives at Booth is not obtained merely for the sake of learning, but with the intention that a Booth graduate will use it to improve the world,” Megan says. “Studying at Booth has taught me that with knowledge comes responsibility, and it’s essential that we use that knowledge to bring hope to people who most require it.” According to Megan, stepping out of your comfort zone – physically, intellectually and spiritually – can lead to academic success, but it’s the strength of personal values that measures your presence in the world. 27
BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION
Angela Davis, CA, CFE, BComm (Honours) MSc (Administration), Associate Professor of Business Administration AFTER A SUCCESSFUL CAREER IN THE corporate world and another decade in the academic realm, Angela Davis joined Booth’s faculty in 2010 to establish the school’s business administration program. Angela says the move was an opportunity to apply her experience and expertise to a new program that develops business leaders who think beyond the bottom line. “It’s important to train young people to become responsible managers who care about the world around them,” she notes. “Here at Booth, the urban service learning program takes students outside the classroom to experience the value of connecting with people at the community level.” One of Booth’s strengths as a business school, according to Angela, is the small size of its classes. This allows professors to engage with students on a personal level. “With such a small school, there’s a built-in sense of community,” she says. “As a teacher, there’s also more flexibility to separate from the tried and true and to bring in new ideas and new ways to do things.”

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION
DID YOU KNOW? In national survey results, students at Booth felt strongly that the college interacts with them as people and not just numbers.
Bachelor of Business Administration At Booth, the study of business administration puts as much emphasis on the value of integrity as it does on the pursuit of profit. There is a growing need for socially conscious business leaders whose values and education can help for-profit and not-for-profit organizations think beyond their bottom lines. Against a backdrop of Christian principles, you’ll attain a solid education in marketing, human resources, finance, accounting, project management, nonprofit management and public relations. To ensure your success, Booth has developed a challenging, four-year program that allows you to learn through real life business cases, computer simulations, site tours and practical job placements. At Booth, you’ll learn to think critically, assess risks, devise strategies and create solutions. However, you’ll also develop a keen awareness of social responsibility, corporate governance and the ethics of good business. Your degree in business administration will equip you with the tools to succeed in commerce, but even more so, it will create opportunities for you to provide leadership in bridging the gap between rich and poor.

Emily Moulton Student, Bachelor of Business Administration
BEFORE SHE ENROLLED IN THE Bachelor of Business Administration at Booth, Emily Moulton thought she had her education and career already mapped out – after earning her degree she’d open a successful restaurant. It didn’t take her long, however, to realize that she had other options. “Since attending Booth, my dreams for my career have been completely altered,” remarks Emily. “I’ve now come to realize that through my education there’s a world of possibilities open to me.” At Booth, Emily not only discovered new ways of looking at the world, she also found fresh ways of looking at herself. “I found that linking my education to my walk with God has truly inspired me,” she says. “Booth has also allowed me to see that money and success aren’t everything; that there is so much more we can do with the privileges we’re given through education.” While still a few years away from graduating, Emily understands that education is a gift that can be used to help make the world a better place.

SOCIAL WORK
Alexander Sawatsky MSW, RSW Assistant Professor, Social Work TO BE TAUGHT BY ALEXANDER SAWATSKY is to be challenged. As he says, “it takes guts to question one’s own worldview and to be open to new ideas.” Alex is convinced of social work’s potential to change the world and he believes in passionately sharing his views in the classroom. His classes can be intense, with discussions that confront and confound his students’ existing viewpoints. “The point of my courses isn’t just to teach new ideas but to challenge existing ones, to get students to see that their view isn’t wrong, it’s just another perspective of many,” Alex explains. With over ten years experience on the front lines of community mental health, Alex understands the dangers of burnout in the world of social work. It’s why he tempers his classroom challenges with humour. As Alex says, laughter can be a healthy coping mechanism – both in the classroom and in the field. “It’s important to show that despite the intensity of the profession, you shouldn’t take yourself too seriously.” 32

SOCIAL WORK
Greg Reid , BSW Alumnus 2006, Bachelor of Social Work
WHEN GREG REID CHOSE TO STUDY at Booth it was for two reasons – the institution was faith-based and it was small. Having the opportunity to pursue social work within the context of his Christian faith was important to Greg. “During his time on earth, Jesus demonstrated the values that Booth teaches and I always felt that the college integrated the principles of hope, social justice and mercy into their programs, helping students to become His hands and feet in their communities.” For Greg, who hails from Bishop’s Falls, Newfoundland, Booth’s smaller classes provided an environment that not only encouraged participation, but made it possible for professors to challenge their students’ preconceived notions of the world. “Studying at Booth taught me to think critically and to question how my social work practice might be impacted by my faith, while not compromising the profession’s code of ethics,” Greg remarks. “It also taught me to reconsider some of my previous belief systems and to approach life and other people in a non-judgmental fashion.”

Ruth & Jim Moulton Parents (daughter Emily featured on page 31)
AS PARENTS OF A BOOTH STUDENT, Ruth and Jim Moulton speak highly of the school’s academic benefits and social opportunities, but it’s the personal growth they’ve witnessed in their daughter Emily that makes both of them proud. “It’s been Emily’s experiences at Booth that have sparked the excitement we see in her today,” Jim explains. “She is passionate about her courses and this has translated into all areas of her life. We’ve seen Emily’s thinking challenged and broadened and her personal values have been clarified and strengthened.”

As a multi-generational Salvation Army family, the Moultons have long been supporters of Booth’s educational mission and they were pleased when Emily chose to enroll in the school’s new business administration program. “Because of our denominational interest, we were thrilled when Emily chose Booth, and we were doubly thrilled when we found out that the school had a business program because that’s what Emily’s chosen as her educational and career path,” Ruth says. “We believe Emily made the right choice.”

Dorothy Mufanechiya Alumna 1997, Bachelor of Arts
SINCE GRADUATING IN 1997, DOROTHY Mufanechiya’s career in humanitarian relief and international development has taken her around the world. For 12 years she worked for World Vision, developing her career as a ministry and service to God in countries such as Albania, South Africa and Kenya. While she has worked in six countries on three continents, it is the education she received at Booth that still motivates her to bring hope, social justice and mercy to people in need. “My education at Booth prepared me to be a global professional working in humanitarian and development programs for local and international NGOs,” Dorothy notes. “I learned the Biblical foundation of what I do now in my Bachelor’s program.” Dorothy now works for the Australian government in her home country of Zimbabwe but she says Booth will always be important to her. “As a foreign student living and studying away from home for the first time, Booth was a safe place for me. The students and faculty were like family.”
