Hello Kypsters, Welcome once again to our monthly gig guide, it’s been a little while since we last produced one of these, however due to popular demand.. We are back!

Aside from arranging, then cancelling a festival this summer we have been hard at work putting in place plans to make Mr Kyps better and stronger going forward into 2013. November and December will boast one of our strongest lineups to date and the new year will bring new surprises. We will be welcoming the Fusion Performing Arts school to our venue in January, utilising the space when we are closed as a music venue. This will be a great way to ensure that the fantastic room we have here continues to be used for the arts as much as possible. The evenings and weekends however will remain a bastion for live music and we will be looking to add to the already extensive list of great performers who have graced our stage. Just in the past 12 months we have seen the likes of Toots & The Maytals, Reel Big Fish, The Hoosiers, Adam Ant, Pigeon Detectives, The Buzzcocks and The Fall to name but a few. Our aim is to build upon this and continue to bring you the very best in live music going forwards and to cement Mr Kyps position as one of the south’s very best live music venues.

They’re back! Electro-dub pioneers, John Peel favourites, Glastonbury veterans and all round good guys Dreadzone once again bring their irresistible live show to Mr Kyps this month. We managed to grab front man and dub icon MC Spee for a quick chat to ask him how they still manage to make it work after all this time; ‘ I think being in a band with great musicians, having some great songs and still loving what we do plays a big part.’ You can’t argue with that. Drummer Greg ‘Dread’ Roberts founded the band after the demise of Mick Jones’ (The Clash) Big Audio Dynamite in 1991. Teaming up with a few like-minded friends, including ex-B.A.D. bassist Leo Williams and keyboardist Dan Donovan, the band had their first (and only) top 40 hit with 1996’s ‘Little Britain’.

“It’s what will keep us playing for another 20 years” MC Spee on the next generation of dreadheadz

Further chart success has so far eluded them, but it’s hard to go to a festival these days without seeing Dreadzone on the bill, although with so many festivals, large and small struggling in the current financial climate does Spee see events returning to their DIY roots, and would Dreadzone still play a part? ‘No...’ he jokes, ‘We will have to see, maybe bands will start putting their own festivals on...’ Is this a nod to the Beautiful Days weekend, devised and run by fellow festival-veterans The Levellers, at which Dreadzone played a blinding mid-afternoon set this year, or perhaps an insight into what Greg, Spee and the band are looking to do themselves in the future? Championed by the late, great, John Peel, who referred to 1995’s ‘Second Light’ album as one of his all-time favourites, Dreadzone recruited MC Spee back in 2000, and the band haven’t looked back since. Six albums in, and with number seven currently being finalised, ‘It’s been mainly recorded at Mike Jones’ studio, and Tim Bran is mixing it as we speak’, the band seem unlikely to stop there. ‘That’s been great. It’s what will keep us playing for another 20 years’ says Spee of the younger fans being turned onto the unmistakable Dreadzone sound, usually by their parents: ‘The next Generation of Dreadz’. And it shows, as a glance around the room at a Mr Kyps show, fast becoming an annual occasion, will see older and younger ‘Dreadheadz’ from all walks of life coming together to dance the night away.

Way back in 1969, a group of British counterculture space cadets formed a band that brought together rock, psychedelia, early electronica, class A drugs and science-fiction, and created a genre all of their own. Space-Rock was born, and Hawkwind were it’s standard bearers. The past 40-odd years have seen one huge hit (1972’s Silver Machine), countless festival headline slots, even more line-up changes, and several splinter groups and side-projects which have at times contained more original band members than Hawkwind itself! The Hawklords are one such band. Borne from Robert Calvert’s and Dave Brock’s exit from the ‘original’ Hawkwind in 1978, The Hawklords were at once deemed a separate entity and a musical evolution of the group. After almost two years recording and touring, Hawklords disbanded and Calvert and Brock re-formed Hawkwind, albeit with a few line-up changes, in order to record a new album. Fast forward over 20 years, Calvert has passed away, Nik Turner (vocals and sax since ‘69) has his own incarnation of Hawkwind in Space Ritual, the original band have their own festival, and still the fans clamour for more. Time for the Hawklords to make a reappearance. Playing old tunes, new tunes, tunes you’ve never heard of, a light show to get lost in, lasers to melt your face into a permanent smile, all wrapped up in a psychedelic, full fat, no-holds-barred hyperspace journey to planet Blanga.

NO JACKET REQUIRED

The ultimate Phil Collins tribute band, No Jacket Required are a group of musicians brought together by a mutual admiration for the work of the former Genesis vocalist/ drummer and multi- million selling solo artist. Touching all bases of Collins’ career, from early work with Peter Gabriel and Genesis, to taking over the vocal duties, and his publicly and critically-acclaimed solo work, NJR do the lot, and then some, throwing in a few obscurities and b-sides to bring a smile to even the most ardent Collins enthusiast.

JJ GREY & MOFRO

Hailing from Jacksonville, California, JJ Grey has been making a huge impression on both sides of the Atlantic. Described as a young Jerry Garcia by the New York Times, the band cross southern country rock with Memphis soul inspired funk grooves. Although trying to pin a genre on these guys is nigh on impossible. Grey suggests his producer has come up with the best description ‘Front porch soul’. The past few years have seen the band steamroller through the American music scene. They’ve found themselves on some of the biggest US festival bills including Lollapalooza and Bonaroo and over the years JJ Grey has performed alongside legends such as B.B. King, The Allman Brothers Band, The Black Crowes, Los Lobos, Jeff Beck, Ben Harper and Lenny Kravitz. This small club show at Mr Kyps will be one of just five dates in the UK. The tour will see him pitstop in Bristol, London, Manchester and Brighton before heading on to Germany, however it will all begin in Lower Parkstone, Poole. An unbelievable talent and performer with one of the tightest bands around, this is one show which all true music aficionados can not afford to miss!

Simon Friend’s Seismic Survey was conceived as a collaboration with longtime musical sparring partner Mick Doyle (mandolin player with Neverland, No Right Turn and Bloodsimple). No Right Turn (NRT) bass player Andy Cooper was recruited, along with Paul Miro, best known for MTV-friendly 1990s rock band Apes, Pigs & Spacemen

I think it’s an exciting prospect and I’ve got real confidence that we’re doing something good” - Simon Friend After almost 25 years with The Levellers, Simon’s found it refreshing to be planning his own show. “It’s healthy to do something outside the band and have some fun, plus if it goes well enough and we’re happy musically it would be nice to do more of it.” The setlist is a fluid creation, with some material drawn from Simon’s songs made famous by The Levellers, such as ‘Is this Art’ and ‘The Boatman’, but in each case dismantled and reworked from the ground up. Additional tunes are drawn from the Miro and Doyle songbooks.

After picking up his brother’s guitar and writing his first song, he felt his future lay in Rock music, being influenced by some of the guitar greats - Jimi Hendrix, Rory Gallagher, Johnny Winter, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Gary Moore. Very quickly, Larry found his own Blues/Rock style, and has been constantly refining it. He is a guitarist, singer, songwriter, with a love for his music which is simply infectious. His status as guitar slinger, is becoming legendary with his exciting, mesmerising guitar playing and rip roaring live shows. In 2009, Larry played an amazing seven encores at the Cambridge Rock Festival and a declaration was made of a “National Larry Miller day”. This is embedded in the festival’s history and he returned in 2010 to a standing ovation and the biggest crowd of the festival. He is unique, there is only one Larry Miller.

THE GREAT PRETENDER

the ultimate tribute to queen

Queen were fantastic. No doubt about that. From Zeppelin-esque hard rock to multi-million selling pop singles, Freddie and the band proved time and time again that they could do it all. The success of their many tribute acts out there is nothing if not a testament to the fact. The Great Pretender, featuring Steve Littlewood as the inimitable Freddie Mercury, are probably the best Queen tribute going. They continually sell out two nights in a row, about 3 times a year, here at Mr Kyps, and that is a testament to both the real Queen and The Great Pretender (and his HRH band). Steve’s and the rest of the guys’ energy on stage, and their passion for the music, is unmatched by any other tribute out there, and their renditions of classic Queen tunes such as ‘You’re My Best Friend’, ‘Radio Gaga’, ‘I Want To Break Free’ and much, much more are sometimes scarily true to the originals. `

With over 2 hours worth of material the band draw on all eras of Queens music. Throughout the set you can expect to see Freddie switching costumes like nobodies business. From the regal cloak and crown look to the infamous ‘I Want To Break Free’ pink top and hoover image, they pull out all the possible stops.

All in all, there’s no way you’re ever going to see the original Queen line-up ever again, but these guys are truly the next best thing. Just remember to buy your tickets early, as this WILL sell out.

THIS WINTER

The party moves indoors Festival favourites Gentlemans Dub Club and Martin Barre's New Day visit Mr Kyps

Festivals have changed a little since the 1960s. Back then these rather smaller, cheaper affairs were sparsely placed across the summer calendar. Fast forward to 2012 and you have a choice of 3 different events every single weekend of the summer. One thing which has stayed the same however, is the great opportunity these events provide for bands to reach a larger audience. Back in 1969 Jethro Tull were supporting Fleetwood Mac at the Croeso Blues Festival, playing alongside Led Zeppelin at the Newport Jazz Festival and strangely on the same bill as Tina Turner at The Devonshire Downs festival ‘69. Jethro Tull became one of the most popular acts of their era and with the great release of Aqualung in ‘71 they became catapulted to the mainstream. On the 22nd November you can catch Martin Barre of Jethro Tull performing all the Tull tracks which won him awards such as the 25th best EVER guitar solo in the USA and 20th best EVER in the UK.

“A ticket to a Gentlemans Dub Club gig is like an invite to forget yourself for one evening and to dance away your worries.” - MinTSOUTH Fast forward a few decades and festivals have become popularised and many people spend a large proportion of their summer in a tent. Along with that have come the ‘festival band’ who build their popularity largely at the sunshine camps which spring up for one weekend in your local farmers fields. One of the very best and most successful of these groups are Gentlemans Dub Club. This band have it all, formed in 2009 the 9 members play a jumped up mixture of Ska, Reggae, Hip-Hop and Roots. GDC have recently been added as support for the likes of Madness, Roots Manuva, The Streets, The Wailers and Zion Train to name but a few. Certainly one of the most entertaining live acts on the circuit, GDC take to any stage and within moments turn any room into a party never to forget.

LIVE SHOW REVIEW : Pronghorn 20th birthday at Mr Kyps

In 1992 when grunge was what every self-respecting alternative music fan was into, a group of friends decided to go against the grain formed a band that the likes of Dorset and the world had never seen. 20 years ago these two members from Rock Regeneration went to see Pronghorns 1st gig at the Gas Tavern pub in Poole. The band’s sound evolved, with a mash of punk, country, and rockabilly bringing together the band’s very own genre; “Cowpunk”. In their 20 years Pronghorn have released many CD’s, with titles such as “Ten Gallon Nads” (named by one of RR’s very own team!), “Faster Than A Speeding Mullet”, “That’s What I Call Dog Shiite 1 & 2″and the classic “Londis Calling”. Tonight Pronghorn came onto the stage with a welcome like no other. Everybody present has at one time shared some great moments in their life with this band. As the bands twin fiddle sound kicks in the dance floor erupts as old and young bounce up and down as if their lives depended on it. Delivering an energetic set that features a great collection of songs spanning their 20 year career, including “Molly (Let Your Bangs Hang Down)”, “Misty Mountain Dew” and “Digging My Potatoes”. The thing about this band is everywhere they play is like a party, they seem to just love what they do, and it shows in the performances. After an hour they leave the stage, but any plans to get the beers in are scuppered as the audience demand more. The band after a few minutes return with a few friends to perform their last number a hoedown reworking of Motorhead’s “Ace Of Spades” leaving everyone in the place with a ringing in their ears and an ache in their weary bones. Pronghorn maybe the 29th Best band in Parkstone but have 1000′ s of fans who have a special place in their heart for them. Long may they continue!!!

ALBUM REVIEW : Empire Affair, Sparks In The Dark Bournemouths’ “Empire Affair” release their follow up to the debut EP “Red Light” in August, but this time the guys have really pushed themselves to deliver something quite special. They like to push boundaries providing maximum entertainment to their audience. From the 1st to the last track on “Sparks In The Dark” it is something that won’t let you go, it grabs and keeps your attention retaining you with each guitar hook and each memorable chorus. “Can’t get Through” starts in a dark sinister way with Neil’s slightly menacing vocals, then searing uplifting guitar melodies kick in and the song then turns on its head. “Tornadoes” is a beautifully crafted song taking you headlong into an infectious opening that you won’t forget, and it will have you singing along in an instant. “One Night In Munich” has an infectious guitar rift that any top band would be proud of, an anthem to uplift any crowd at a festival when the band are at full pelt. “Sunrise” ends the short journey at a slower pace showing that the band have versatility. There is no let up in quality with guitars and vocals delivering on all levels. The five members of Empire Affair have created something they can be very proud of, four songs I am sure will easily stand the test of time, go and buy this EP, most of all once you have bought it go and see them live, it will be an experience that will thrill and exhilarate!

TRIBUTES ROCK Tribute bands have long been a staple of the Mr Kyps experience. Many have performed on our stage, emulating their heroes to the very best of their ability. However some acts go above and beyond the call of duty. Two such groups are ‘Limehouse Lizzy’ and ‘The Four Fighters’. Limehouse Lizzy were declared ‘The UKs Hardest Working Band’ of 2011 by the PRS. As far as tributes go, they don’t get much better than this tribute to Phil Lynott & Co. The stage show is replicated exactly, costumes and all, in fact these guys are so good that BBC 2 ran a Saturday Night feature programme dedicated to Limehouse Lizzy as the masters of the tribute band scene. Frontman of Limehouse, Wayne Ellis more than looks the part and the boys are certainly back in town when Limehouse Lizzy take over the stage. Whisky In The Jar, Black Rose and all the other classics get performed in one of the most explosive tribute gigs to ever come to Poole. The Four Fighters are also no strangers to Ashley Cross. Paying homage to ‘The nicest guy in rock’ - Dave Grohl - and his band, The Foo Fighters. Named after the world war II term for a UFO, the Foo’s have gone on to become rock royalty. With his post Nirvana outfit Grohl has released a huge array of classic tunes, from Everlong to Monkey Wrench and The Pretender to My Hero. All the big hits are performed faithfully by the Four Fighters who have an ever growing and faithful fanbase. Since 2003 these guys have been putting on one hell of a show, with one hell of a setlist, making one hell of a sound! Limehouse Lizzy and The Four Fighters are simply NOT TO BE MISSED!

BUSTERS BACK

Douglas Trendle, better known as Buster Bloodvessel formed Bad Manners back in ‘76 when the members were still at school. A few years honing their skills and in ‘80 they were signed to Magnet Records - home to Alvin Stardust and Chris Rea. The charts were filled with the likes of Madness, The Specials and The Selecter and the world seemed ready for Bad Manners. Busters larger than life personality soon became notorious, the bald-headed man with a giant tongue certainly caught peoples attention. Eleven top 20 hits followed and songs such as ‘Lip Up Fatty’, ‘Special Brew’and ‘Skinhead Love Affair’ became immortalised in ska history. Buster was once banned from TOTP for painting his bald head yellow with a big red dot in the middle so he would look like a giant zit. Apparently it caused glare and ruined their lighting. Not quite so scandalous these days, but still one hell of a performer. This is live ska as it should be done. novdec_a5size.indd 22

JK is world renowned as being the very best tribute to Robbie and has taken his show on tour to over 15 countries worldwide. Playing hits from the early days of Robbie’s career, taking a detour via the elegant swing era and ploughing headlong into his most recent material there is something for every Robbie fan. JK plays with a full live band and with world class musicians supporting him there really is no other show like it! To give you an idea of the quality of musicianship, his band members have performed with Elton John, Ronan Keating and Justin Timberlake to name a few. JK has played to over 2 million people live and has worked with Channel 4 and ITV and many radio stations. He has also performed alongside Shane Richie and Coleen Nolan amongst other stars. If you’re lucky enough to see this show then you are in for a real treat. JK pulls out all the stops to ensure his audience go home entertained.

Dirty/DC have been playing throughout the UK and Europe since 1998 and have developed a lineup and stage show that has made their reputation seriously strong amongst AC/DC fans, whether die hard fanatics or people who just want a good night out. Now a firm staple in the Kyps calendar, we are regularly asked when the guys will be back to rock our stage once again. It’s an occasion we really look forward to, especially the extra special Christmas show. Every visual detail has been fine tuned from the wall of Marshalls to Angus’s footwear, but most importantly the music delivery and stage show has an impact regularly described as “Awesome!”. Dirty/DC give real value for money with a full 2 hour+ show with all the AC/DC favourites from both Bon and Brian eras.

From The Jam have gained a deserved status for the kind of incendiary ‘live’ performances that sealed the reputation of The Jam all those years ago. The Jam, with their original line up of Paul Weller, Rick Buckler and Bruce Foxton were one of the biggest selling and most popular UK bands, from breaking onto the scene in 1977 until the break up in 1982. With huge chart success, with critically acclaimed and iconic albums ‘In The City’, ‘This Is A Modern World’, ‘All Mod Cons’, ‘Sound Affects’ & ‘Snap’ which led to the release of some all time classic singles hits ‘Down in A Tube Station at Midnight’ ‘Elton Riffles’, Going Underground, ‘Start’, That’s Entertainment’, ’Town Called Malice’, ‘Bitterest Pill’ and ‘Beat Surrender’ to name a few…...Their last 5 albums were all top ten hits and their last 8 singles made it into the top 10.’ From The Jam continue music, energy and spirit of those great musical years with the original Jam bass player, Bruce Foxton, and now with, drummer Mark Brzezicki formerly of Scottish 80’s band , Big Country and guitarist Russell Hastings, playing all the hits, plus a few more…it is a night of mod mayhem and classic Jam hits. Recently, Foxton and Weller have worked together on the sleeve notes for the release of Paul’s single ‘Fast Car/Slow Traffic’ from his most recent album, also featuring Bruce on bass. There were also incredible scenes when Bruce recently appeared live alongside Paul - for the first time in 28 years during Weller’s five night residency at the Albert Hall, London. The From The Jam gig will be a great show for all Jam fans, past and present and for anyone who’s enjoys good, pure musical energy.
