Welcome To
A MESSAGE FROM KYP
Hello to you all, Welcome to the inaugural Upbeat Festival. Thank you for supporting this event as we look forward to three days of quality live music. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our partners Big Bear and of course Bert, Craig, Paul and Gabby who have worked tirelessly organising this event. My thanks also must go to Neal Butterworth and his team at the Daily Echo and Pete White from 1st Waste Management for their continued support. Enjoy the bank holiday here at The Upbeat Festival and I believe this will become the most popular live music and family event the south coast has to oer. Regards. Kyp.
Welcome to Upton Park for the ďŹ rst ever Upbeat Festival! The live music gophers at Mr Kyps and Big Bear have been working tirelessly for the past few months to bring what we think is the ultimate family festival line-up, and all set in the beautiful, picturesque surroundings of Upton Country Park.
A select few of the very best tribute acts in the business, alongside such superstars as Imelda May, Sandi Thom and Toploader, will be on hand to entertain you throughout the weekend, plus a fabulous array of food stalls brought to you by Urban Guerilla, and a nice lil area for the nippers courtesy of the guys at Green Buttercup (www.greenbuttercup.org).
Many of the acts you hear over the weekend will be returning to Poole to play at Mr Kyps over the next few months, so make sure you head over to the Mr Kyps tent where the team will be selling tickets to all upcoming events.
So, go to the bar, get yourself a drink or two, grab something to eat, peruse the stalls, enjoy the music, and most of all have a wonderful Upbeat Festival!
We would like to thank NEXO for providing us with such a fantastic soundsystem for this years festival. www.nexo.fr

One that stands out for many of us in the band would be our ďŹ rst theatre show - the Chequer Mead in East Grinstead back in June 2003. A special evening and a venue which we enjoy returning to each year.
The Albert Hall with Paul Rodgers. A special moment was whilst I was singing I looked down and saw Gary Moore looking up smiling at me. He played that night with Paul and totally set the place alight

I ve attended many excellent concerts by Phil, and also by Robert Plant in particular. My favourite ever though must be the Genesis show in November 1992 at Wolverhampton Civic Hall. My favourite band in my hometown for what turned out to be Phil s last Genesis show for 15 years. cheeseburger and chips, I m afraid....
Do They Know It s Christmas? by Band Aid.
Knebworth August 4th 1979 Led Zep. At that time, the music press were quite scathing about the band. On that day 100,000 people turned out to see Zeppelin proving all of those magazines wrong. It was the most amazing show and I was right at the front and incredibly proud. Vegetarian Moroccan and Asian

Marc Bolan & T.Rex were always the craziest & manic, I have a special place in my heart for the ďŹ rst T.Rex concert I attended 1st Feb 1972 at a venue called Munsterland in Germany, just entering my teens, I thought they had just beamed down from Mars.

We are very proud and honoured to have CLLR GRAHAM WILSON, Mayor of Poole, officially opening The Upbeat Festival. This will mark the beginning of what will surely be the best bank holiday weekend of the year. Mr Kyps have been bringing you the best in live tribute acts for over a decade now, and we ve handpicked the best of the best for our first Upbeat Festival. Arch Phil Collins interpreters NO JACKET REQUIRED have exactly what it takes to headline Saturday night, and we are as excited as anyone to see this monster tribute blast out all the classics including In The Air Tonight and Another Day In Paradise . With a dazzling display of energy and enthusiasm NJR cover all eras of the solo music of award-winning drummer, singer and songwriter Phil Collins, and we are delighted to have them close out the opening day of the festival. Second on the bill are T-REXTASY, the closest you ll ever get to Marc Bolan without a trip to Golders Green Crematorium with a shovel. Frontman Danielz and his band are so close to the original act it hurts, in fact Danielz even bought the late glam superstar s wardrobe after his tragic motor accident all those years ago. This is a chance to experience the magic of T.Rex in the setting their music was designed for, don t miss it. Also on Saturday, KASTOFF KINKS, comprised entirely of ex-Kinks members from over the years, will be rocking all the hits you may or may not be old enough to remember, but will know nonetheless. From the birth of hard rock with You Really Got Me and All Day And All Of The Night , to Waterloo Sunset and LLL Lola , these guys have enough classic material to almost fill the festival by themselves. Add to this the divine FLEETWOOD BAC laying down the West Coast sounds of one of the biggest selling artists in history, the Michael Stipe endorsed REM UK, THE REGGAE MAGIC bringing sun-drenched reggae with them, and ZZ TOPS providing the all important Texan boogie tunes.
After the tribute band overload on Saturday we have a fantastic line-up of original artists for Sunday. IMELDA MAY and her band have been going from strength to strength since her appearance at Mr Kyps 18 months ago, and we can t wait to see her headlining the Upbeat Festival stage. With her new album Mayhem Imelda is reaching the heights of stardom she was always destined for, and I can t think of a better way to round o Bank Holiday Sunday night. Warming up the stage for Imelda is the wonderful SANDI THOM. Following her early success with the single I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker (With Flowers In My Hair) , Sandi has gone for a more roots blues direction with her latest album Merchants And Thieves . Award after award has since been showered upon the release, and we re all looking forward to hearing the tracks live. TOPLOADER are a band who need no introduction. These guys have recently reformed and recorded a new album, looking to make a new name for themselves as a deďŹ ning act for a new decade. This is a band who have something to prove, and hearing the new tracks, we think they re well on their way to doing exactly that, and then some.
Throughout the day we have acoustic prodigy BEN MONTAGUE, soulful blues from none other than DEBORAH BONHAM (yes, she IS John Bonham s sister...), ROCKIN THE JOINT will be doing exactly what they say on the tin and JOHN ALLEN S gravelly rootsy folk will get you dancing all day long.

Monday afternoon at Upbeat Festival kicks o with two of Dorset s premier cover acts in the form of RAT RACE and SOULED OUT. No matter what the weekend has thrown at you thus far, Souled Out are guaranteed to get you dancing to all the classics from Papa s Got A Brand New Bag to Soul Man , while Rat Race will have you skanking all the way to the front of the stage, using every last ounce of energy you have left. Heading into the evening, SGT PEPPER S ONLY DARTBOARD BAND will take you all the way back to the 60s, covering all eras of The Beatles from the Beatlemania of the early years to the psychedelic rock of their later years. Alongside these guys, and closing out the festival, are ROLLIN STONED, the ďŹ nest Rolling Stones tribute band in existence today. These uncanny imitators of one the most popular bands to ever take the stage will make you feel like it s Hyde Park in 1969 all over again. All in all, Monday s line-up will be the perfect way to end the inaugural Upbeat Festival.
Forthcoming highlights @ As you re taking a stroll around the site this weekend, make sure you stop by the Mr Kyps marquee, where you can find out all about what s on at the South Coast s premier live music venue. They will also be selling tickets to all upcoming events including JK as Robbie Williams on 3rd September. This is going to be a fantastic date for two reasons: Firstly, JK is the ultimate Robbie tribute, pretty much selling out every show he s ever played at Kyps. Also, he will be performing a special early evening matinee show for the under-16s, with half-price soft drinks, so younger fans of live music can get a taste of what Mr Kyps has to offer. Howard Marks makes what is becoming his annual return to Mr Kyps on the 25th September. Everyone s favourite sophisticated drug baron/MI6 agent/best-selling author will be on hand with his usual array of hilarious anecdotes, sound advice, and the funniest Q&A since Bez at Guilfest. Early 2000s indie-rock legends Wheatus will be gracing the Mr Kyps stage on October 10th. These guys have spent the last ten years self-releasing albums and relentlessly touring to become the finely tuned live machine they are today, and with their latest effort: Pop, Songs, And Death, Volumes 1 & 2 , are proving they still have what made them global superstars with Teenage Dirtbag all those years ago. The Hamsters will be making their final ever appearance at Mr Kyps on the 15th October as part of their Farewell Tour in what will surely be an emotional night. Over the past ten years the guys have continuously done nothing but perform blistering set after blistering set in Poole, playing their original tracks as well as the ZZ Top and Hendrix covers which made their name in the first place. This is one not to be missed. Kicking off the run-up to Christmas is a spectacular double-header in the shape of Dr Feelgood and Nine Below Zero. Two of the most enduring and iconic bands in the history of rock n roll will be playing together on the 1st December, and any fan of either band will not be leaving this show in any way disappointed. Consistently hailed as one of the best tributes in the business, Limehouse Lizzy have been a big part of Mr Kyps December line-up for several years now, and this year is no exception. Head on down to Parkstone on the 16th December to experience all of Phil Lynott and co s hits over one extraordinary night of nothing but Thin Lizzy. This year s show will be all the more poignant given the untimely death of legendary guitarist Gary Moore last February, so expect something special. www.mrkyps.net ¦ 01202 748945
around the festival
ON THE BUS
Around the site at Upbeat Festival we have a fantastic array of food, drink and general stallholders for all your festival shopping urges, plus a hand picked selection of local, national, and international charities dotted around. So, if you re feeling a little peckish take a walk over to the UK s finest purveyors of guerrilla dining, URBAN GUERILLA, who have brought their own small but perfectly formed food village to Upton Country Park this year. These guys are out on a mission to dispel classic preconceptions of festival rat-burger and soggy chips fodder, and instead provide discerning festival goers with a range of delicious treats from around the world, all of which are organic, fair trade, and homemade with locally sourced or origin-traceable ingredients. As you walk past Urban Guerilla you ll come to our specially designed kids play area, brought to you by the lovely people at GREEN BUTTERCUP. There will be lots of workshops for all ages including: giant dream catcher making, printing, critters on sticks, interactive story telling, funky pots, face painting, mega bubble play and much, much more. We also plan to have a procession every day at around 5.30pm so that kids can show off all the lovely things they ve made. Our very own storyteller Captain Smart Shirt will lead the procession. Add to this CADBURY S SPOTS AND STRIPES running a tent all weekend with their Minute To Win It competition among other fun promotional activities and you ll find that Upbeat Festival 2011 has everything you need to keep children of all ages entertained throughout the event. Further around the site are all of our stallholders selling all the festival wares you could ever want, so get yourself down there and satisfy all of your Upbeat retail requirements. And finally, we are extremely proud to welcome the MAYOR OF POOLE to Upbeat Festival, and are delighted to support four charities which are especially dear to his heart. These include THE FRIENDS OF DORSET HOLME, DORSET BLIND ASSOCIATION, ABOUT FACE, and also THE JOHN THORNTON YOUNG ACHIEVERS FOUNDATION. This charity in particular is in memory of Lt John Thornton RM, 22, from Ferndown, who was tragically killed in Afghanistan in 2008. The foundation is all about providing opportunities for local young people to climb as high as they can , and is a fitting legacy.
