This design competition asked for a design for a partially developed valley south of Wenzhou’s city center. This urban edge location currently contains dispersed clusters of university campuses, small industry and housing compounds, separated by infrastructure. The design unifies these clusters by creating a central business core, with two technology axes that link the existing campuses to this new core by means of a strip of science parks within a green area. The existing water structure becomes a connective tissue, from the harbor-side business core to the agri-technology Eco Valley. First place winner.

Hangzhou Bay New Zone is an industrial area on the outskirts of the city of Ningbo. In recent years, local government began planning housing, services and transit to turn the monofunctional industrial zone into a more balanced urban area. A suspension railway will be the main form of transit for the centre of the new zone. Respecting the existing land use plan with many plots already given out or constructed, a guideline was needed for the integration of the stations within the urban context. The main concerns of this guideline were the classification of station types, the street design around the elevated stations, bus-rail interchange, and building envelopes for the plots surrounding the stations. As an urban designer, I was responsible for applying the design principles for the design of seven key stations, including street design around the station and buildings envelopes for the adjacent plots. I also worked on the isometric principle diagrams and the pedestrian system.

Xiangtang is a small town located on the urban fringe of Nanchang, the provincial capital of Jiangxi. Capitalizing on its current role as a rail transportation node, Xiangtang will be developed into a smart logistics hub, growing the population from 150.000 to 350.000 people. Overcoming the fragmentization caused by railway lines was a main consideration in the plan. We developed the project from the strategic planning stage to the urban planning and urban design stages.
personal tasks:
Among my responsibilities were developing proposals for a structure of nodes and corridors, a draft land use plan, a draft revitalization strategy for the existing town center, urban design of a central campus district, and pereparing materials for rendering and video production companies.

This city game is about the uneven development of the Cape Town. It makes players think on two scales: the metropolitan city, and the development of the centre of Khayelitsha, Cape Town’s largest township. This way, a dialog between the large institutions (with money and influence) and the local players (with local knowledge and contacts) can start.
personal tasks:
For this project four people from the Amsterdam office cooperated with people from the City of Cape Town. My tasks included mapping the main people and institutions in the urban development of Cape Town and Khayelitsha, writing grant applications, and play testing the game. I designed posters for the game room, and made the Khayelitsha game table and customized game pieces.

With Doffice I worked on a collateral exhibition for the 2015 Shenzhen biennial (UABB). In this exhibition in and about the urban village of Shuiwei, we examined how ‘villages in the city’ continue to retain their characteristics within Shenzhen’s generic urban landscape. The exhibition consisted of three elements. The first was an exhibition street in which the story of Shuiwei was told through a series of pavilions, connected by a blue landscape which highlighted the varied urban life taking place there. Secondly, a series of urban interventions, such as an abandoned open space redecorated by local schoolchildren, let people see the area in a new light. Finally, a series of events communicated our reading of the hidden qualities of the place to Shuiwei’s residents.

New residential district for the town of Heeze, Brabant. The expansion refers to the pleasant small-town character of Heeze, with diverse low-rise housing types and narrow front gardens. Where the town overlooks the traditional rural landscape surrounding Heeze, it provides a neat urban edge combined with a landscape for water retention, recreation and play. A central square serves as an informal meeting-place for the district, while a cross of cycling friendly mized use streets connects the district to the rest of the town.

Urban design component of a feasibility study into the redevelopment of the Tiel railway zone. At the heart of the site is a historic auction hall, connected to the identity of Tiel as center for growing and processing fruit. The plan aims to bring a new kind of neighborhood tot Tiel, that supports an urban lifestyle while preserving the industrial character of the site. Some historic buildings will be repurposed into apartements or services, complemented by new housing in an industrial style. Slim urban houses are combined with patches of appartments into closed urban blocks, standing freely in a green environment. Relocating the school building brings new activities to the railway zone, freeing its current location for affordable housing. This study resulted in an area development vision, that was at the center of a succesful application for € 3 million in national funding.
