Celebrating Philanthropy 2008 - 2009 Dear Berwick Community, Each year, when I fully digest the breadth of financial support for Berwick from our constituents, I find myself moved deeply. In a year where the world has experienced one of the most challenging economic climates in recent memory, I hope that you will pause to recognize and appreciate the significance of the following statement: this has been the most extraordinary year for fundraising in the history of the Academy. A confluence of major gifts, annual fund results, and BAPA fundraising has combined to yield an incredible message of strength and support within this community. I hope that our donors, development staff, trustees, and other volunteers find an incredibly deep sense of reward from our collective achievements. Perhaps my greatest source of pride has been the results in our annual fund. The need for unrestricted giving to support the operations of the Academy has simply never been greater. Our community stepped up to surpass all previous goals. Our annual fund goal this year was set at approximately $460,000, and we surpassed this number by raising over $570,550, eclipsing the $500,000 mark for the first time in Berwick’s history. Equally encouraging has been the increase in participation, as we were able to reach a parent participation level in the annual fund of 60% with the assistance of our 1791 challenge late in the year. When we include our senior giving program into these figures, over 70% of our families made a charitable gift to Berwick Academy this year. As I have said in previous writings, I believe that these kinds of numbers express publicly how our families feel about the Berwick experience and these will prove to be important statistics to celebrate in our admissions and marketing efforts as well as our development office. Berwick Academy was also the recipient of two major gifts during the past academic year. The first was the extraordinary unrestricted bequest from the estate of Helen Hasty Perrault, who was the widow of Victor Perrault, class of 1933 at Berwick Academy. This gift has resulted in $3.75 million unrestricted dollars that simply could not have arrived at a better moment. The second major gift this year was a $2 million commitment from the Schleyer Family Foundation to fund a group of Schleyer Scholars in our Upper School for twenty years. The announcement of this exciting new scholarship helped build our application numbers in the Upper School, and this creative gift demonstrated an incredible passion for the Academy from a family who knows Berwick and its needs incredibly well. Finally, in a year when auction events have been down considerably across the country, our BAPA organization was able to raise enough funds to support its considerable budget for next year, ensuring another exceptional experience for our students. In addition, they were able to raise approximately $40,000 through the “Fund A Need” initiative to support the renovation of the Commons roof. These are extraordinary accomplishments for our parent organization, and this triumvirate of fundraising stories—annual fund, major giving, and BAPA—together demonstrate an unwavering commitment by our community to steward the future of Berwick. Although we have much to celebrate, it is important for me to mention that next year will present even greater challenges, and I look forward to surpassing our goals once again. New pressures on financial aid and enrollment mean that the need for unrestricted operating support through the annual fund will only continue to grow. I look forward to writing this letter once again next summer with an even greater sense of amazement and pride in our fundraising accomplishments. Annual Fund Reaches All-Time High! Composing the annual report message each year evokes a broad range of emotions for the annual fund chair. The thought process follows a predicable path. What should I say? How can I make my message sound fresh? How can I express my gratitude to each member of our community? How can I effectively describe the truly remarkable results of this year’s campaign? Finally, one puts pen to paper and begins by saying, “Thank-you.” First, thank you to our amazing Berwick community. In the face of unprecedented economic challenges this year, our trustees, parents, staff, faculty, alumni, past parents and even grandparents took the Annual Fund into uncharted territory and reached an all-time high of $570,558. This is money which directly supports the Academy’s operating budget. Among other things, it helps to pay our devoted faculty and staff, support our athletic and art programs and helps to ease the burden of tuition. Of note was the fact that many donors this year actually increased their giving; and, many of our alumni chose to direct their support to the Annual Fund. Equally impressive this year was the parent participation level. It is heartwarming to see that our parent community is hearing the message about the important role the Annual Fund plays in providing a Berwick education to all our students. We reached a new all-time high participation level of 60%. Again, thank you. Finally, I would be remiss if I did not thank the more than 60 parents and trustees who reached out to our entire Berwick community this year. Whether you called a new family to welcome them and answer their questions about the Annual Fund or called a parent in your child’s grade or one of our Leadership level donors, it is clear your call made the difference. Volunteerism is the cornerstone of Berwick’s Annual Giving success! Participation reached an all-time high! Thank you to all the volunteers! Parent volunteers for the 2008-2009 Annual Fund made countless phone calls reaching out to parents, answering questions and encouraging their support. With their efforts, parent participation reached 60%. In addition, Class of 2009 parent volunteers, led by Vickie Jenkinson and Lisa Kleinmann , encouraged 84% of the parents to make a gift to the Class of 2009 Endowment Fund. 2009 Setting The Standard For Years to Come… The Development Committee Extends Their Deep Gratitude As Chair of the Trustee Development Committee, I want to express my sincere appreciation for the part each of you played in the success of our fundraising this past year. Berwick students are blessed with teachers who inspire and mentor them to learn and grow and they also enjoy an incredible facility in which to discover their passions and talents, thanks to the incredible hard work on your part. Further, the continued excellence of our student achievement indicates that we educate some of the very strongest students in the country. Not unlike many institutions, this has been an extraordinary year for Berwick. We have been challenged by the economy, at the same time the demographics of our region show a shrinking school-age population. Each of you participated in the sacrifices necessary to keep Berwick the strong institution it is. At the same time we, as an institution, have benefited from our joint philanthropic efforts. The bequest we received from Helen Hasty Perreault in memory of her husband Victor, Class of 1933 and the Schleyer Scholarship Fund could not have come at a better moment in time. Perhaps the true tribute to each of you was the success of our Annual Fund and our Class of 2009 Endowment Fund efforts which together got more than 72% of our families to participate. A first for Berwick! At the same time everyone stepped forward to help make the BAPA auction a success! Without the support from our trustees, parents, former parents, alumni, faculty, staff and friends we could not have achieved these milestones. Nearly $7.2 million was contributed in cash and pledges in the year which ended on June 30, 2009. This year the Annual Fund reached an all time high of $570,557 and our parent participation reached 60%! The Annual Fund is perhaps the most significant fund raising effort on campus - it is what makes the budget balance. Without the generosity of parents, former parents, trustees, alumni, faculty, staff and friends of the Academy, we could not have achieved such a success. The Class of 2009 became the second graduating class to have every member of the Class make a gift to their Class Fund. Upon their return for their 20th Class Reunion in 2029, they will then determine the purpose of their Fund. In addition they became the first Class to name their Class Agents prior to graduation! Congratulations to Sara Fechner and Emily Lorei. While overall Alumni giving remains an opportunity, 157 Alumni, including those who are current parents did contribute over $61,000 and participation reached 10%! Planned gifts, bequests and gifts by will continue to grow. This year we learned that another alum, Perley Munroe ’48, joined the Chadbourne-Thompson Society by naming Berwick Academy in his will. My sincere thanks to all of you who helped to make Berwick the institution it is today.

Alumni Contributions Grow We are very excited that alumni contributions continue to grow. Setting an ambitious goal for increased alumni participation and total dollars given this year challenged the Fund Raising Committee to be more active than ever before. As donors, your generous gifts to Berwick Academy have supported important activities like the Annual Fund for operations of the school, endowed scholarship funds for students, and the Alumni Endowment Fund for Fogg which supports the ongoing maintenance of Fogg Memorial. With your generous gifts, you continued to help make BA all that it is today – a leader in academics, athletics, arts and technology. It is important to note that our newest member of the Chadbourne-Thompson Society, which recognizes those donors who have named Berwick Academy as a beneficiary of their estate plans, is Perley Munroe ’48. Recognizing that the economy has presented significant challenges for many people, I want to thank all the alumni who made contributions to Berwick this year. Ours is a special relationship with the Academy, as we represent its past and its future. And, as Alumni, we recognize our obligation to give back to our school where many strong, personal bonds were formed between our classmates and our teachers who impacted our lives. Every year I am in awe of how the Berwick parent community comes together to create a special night and this year was no different. This year’s auction was a success on many levels. It brought us together for a fun and relaxing night, it created a sense of community among the parents, and it was a great financial success. The auction’s success will allow us to make our BAPA budget, help to fix the Commons’ roof, and we made enough to enable the 3 divisions to work on their “wish list” items. I want to thank Jane Hourihan and Nickie Gaudette for giving us another wonderful auction and I want to thank the many parents who attended, who donated, and who bought items- we could not do it without you!!!!
