It is to this end that the charity, Kicks Count, was founded and continues to grow, empowering mums-to-be with knowledge and confidence to understand their baby’s movements and trust their instincts. A baby’s movements indicate its wellbeing so by getting to know their baby’s regular pattern of movement mums can report any change and help ensure the healthy delivery of their baby. What do you need to know? We asked Elizabeth Hutton, CEO of Kicks Count to answer some commonly asked questions and sort fact from myth.

When should I first feel my baby move? Most women will usually feel their baby’s first movements around 16-24 weeks of pregnancy, however various things can affect when you will feel your baby move, such as the position of your placenta and whether this is your first baby or not. At first your baby’s movements may feel like gas or indigestion! As the baby develops movements can be kicks, swooshes, punches, flips or turns, hiccups however do not count as movement. This is because they are an involuntary reflex. You can usually differentiate hiccups, as they will feel jerky and very rhythmic.
What are normal movements? This is one of the most common questions and the answer is…there isn’t one! There is no set pattern of what is normal for an unborn baby as each baby is different. Instead, it is important to get to know their individual pattern. It is not true that babies slow down as you reach the end of pregnancy, they should continue to move up to and during labour. During both day and night, your baby has sleep periods that mostly last between 20 and 40 minutes, but not longer than 90 minutes. Your baby will usually not move during these sleep periods. How many movements should I feel? There is no set number of movements you should be feeling, what is important is that you know what is normal for your individual baby. If you notice a reduction in your baby’s regular movement pattern contact your Midwife. There is a common misconception that you should be feeling 10 kicks over a set period, this is no longer recommended as all babies are different! It is important to know what is normal for your baby and report any change in that. If you have noticed your baby’s movements have slowed

down, call your Midwife or Maternity Unit. Do not consume large quantities of something i.e. cold drink to prompt your baby to kick as this may result in indigestion or gurgles you may mistake for movements and give false reassurance. If you are unsure if your baby’s movements have slowed down, take some time to focus on movements. But won’t my baby “run out of room” or “slow down for labour”? Absolutely not! These are both popular myths and are completely untrue. A baby will move more and more up until 32 weeks of pregnancy and then stay roughly the same from then until birth. The type of movement that is felt as baby gets bigger is very likely to change, however the regularity of movement should remain the same. There is no reason for the baby to slow their movement simply because they’re growing, a womb is really rather stretchy and accommodating. A baby is also expected to move normally through labour too. It’s really important that these myths are broken down. Why are my baby’s movements important? Reduced movement can be a sign that baby is in distress although this is not the only reason a baby slows down. Two out of three mums who have a stillbirth say they

noticed their baby’s movements slow down beforehand. It is therefore important that all cases of reduced movement are reported to your Midwife or Maternity Unit. How can I monitor my baby’s movements? Get to know your baby. Make a mental note of when he or she moves the most. Do they move as soon as you wake up? Do they move when you eat? Do they respond to certain sounds? This can be a great way to get a feel for your baby and if you are concerned about

your baby’s movements it gives you a good marker. You can also use a Kicks Count wristband. These are silicone wristbands that have a plastic slider. Each time you feel the baby move, you move the slider along one. You may then start to notice that your baby moves four times before lunch for example. Or eight times by the time you have your afternoon tea. If one day you do not reach your expected number you know to call your Midwife. It is really important to remember there is no set number you need to get to, it will depend on what is normal for your baby. Kicks Count also have a free app which can be downloaded from your app store. It’s been designed to help mums get to know their baby’s regular pattern of movement, simply by clicking the footprint each time and episode of movement is felt. The app logs these episodes and helps mums to gain a better understanding of the times their baby moves. Should I use a home Doppler if I’m worried about movements? No! However accurate a home Doppler is, or how confident the mother is in using it, it does not give any indication that the baby

is well. If a baby’s movements slow down it could be that they are in distress and this needs to be investigated by a professional. If you see a person collapsed on the street would you check they had a pulse and walk away? No probably not. You would probably call an ambulance as chances are they are unwell, albeit alive. The same goes for your baby. If they have a heartbeat they can still be unwell and this is the time you need to seek help. If you wait until you can’t find the heartbeat to call the midwife or maternity unit, it is too late.

he Positive Birth Movement is a global organisation that offers free antenatal groups across the UK and all around the world. Set up in 2012 by a passionate UK mum, Milli Hill, the positive birth message quickly spread and there are now around 250 groups in the UK and about 150 in the rest of the world, everywhere from the USA and Canada, to Australia, Uganda, and South Korea! The groups are open to pregnant women and anyone else interested in helping to make birth a more positive experience. Monthly topics like ‘Choices in Birth’, ‘Place of Birth’, and ‘Planning a Positive Birth’, make space for open and free discussion, and the groups are built on the idea women sharing and listening to each other, rather than the more traditional idea of an antenatal class with only one ‘teacher’ or ‘expert’. Often at least one woman will share her own positive birth story, and this is a great

chance for pregnant women to hear about what birth is really like! The groups are also a great place to learn about the many choices you can make during pregnancy and labour, about your human rights in the birth room, and about how to cope if your birth does not go as you had hoped or planned. They also provide an amazing support network for the postnatal period, as many women return to the groups after childbirth, to share their stories, meet old friends, and help other women feel more confident about the birth experience. had heard of the Positive Birth Movement while I was pregnant, and followed them through social media. Sadly, there weren’t any PBM groups in my area at the time, but I loved the spirit and community feeling of the movement, supporting women to achieve their own positive birth. I made the decision to have a gentle, women-centred caesarean for my second baby, after a difficult first birth, and it was the PBM that reinforced the message that a positive birth experience can take many different forms - whether you birth at home or in hospital. After the birth, I was absolutely delighted to hear that a PBM group had started in my area, and have had the pleasure of attending since with my daughter. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect the first time I went, but it really surpassed my expectations. It’s been wonderful to come together in a positive space with other women to discuss birth, and being able to speak freely about our own experiences sharing our stories and knowledge in a safe environment. I couldn’t recommend seeking out your local group enough - pregnant women are subjected to so much negativity surrounding birth that it is so important that they can speak to other women who are passionate about supporting other mums. moved to England whilst I was six months pregnant and knowing only my husband. I quickly joined a pregnancy yoga class to keep active, where I met a lovely woman who invited me to a Positive Birth Movement group. I happily accepted; not only did I meet a wonderful group who became friends, I also learned so much. I gained confidence in myself and my eyes were opened to the birth choices available to me. We discussed everything, including home vs. hospital births; natural vs. epidural; and gas and air aided births. The most impactful meeting for me was about emergency caesarian sections. We all hope this will not happen during our journey. I paid attention out of curiosity and I am so glad I did because two days later I went into labour. After 45 hours of a very long and hard labour with complications, I was told that an emergency caesarian section was necessary. I felt calmer than I probably should have, and it was not just the gas and air! There were two dozen people rushing around the operating room, yet I felt confident that they were all there for a reason. They even announced themselves and their respective positions to me. With their assistance, I delivered a healthy baby boy! Every birth is different and every woman is unique. I learnt that it is okay to discuss these topics; the good, the bad and the ugly. I wish that I had the opportunity to go to more PBM meetings before my son was born, but I did continue to go after his birth because I felt a bond to these women. lthough choosing a car seat for your baby might be the last thing on your mind at the start of your pregnancy, it really is the very FIRST thing you need to get right before bringing your precious little bundle home. Here we talk to Jan James from Good Egg Safety, a leading authority in car seats, to tell us all we need to know.
Why is it so important to choose the right seat? We all want to keep our little ones safe and, of course, child car seats are required by law. Sadly, many parents still get it wrong with up to 7 out of 10 child car seats not fitted correctly; leaving their vulnerable little occupants at risk of serious injury. With so much choice around, it can all be very confusing, however, it’s important to remember that not every seat fits every car, second-hand seats may have hidden dangers and fitting it safely isn’t always straightforward. So make sure you brush up on choosing and fitting your baby’s first seat on our website. Explain the law and testing Babies, Toddlers and children in the UK must legally use a child car seat until they reach 135cm* or 12 years old. Every child car seat sold in the UK must pass crash testing and obtain R44.04 or R129 approval to be sold. The key differences between the two car seat approvals are: R129 is the very latest safety standard, however R44.04 child seats are not unsafe. Many R44 seats exceed the basic requirements of the R44 approval and pass higher impact testing. What seats should I look at for a newborn? There are several different seat options available for newborn babies.

Group 0 car seats have a weight limit of 0-10kg, approximately up to 6 months of age. These seats typically are lie flat, and fit sideways across the rear bench of the car. The benefit of these seats is that they allow your baby to lie flat, so there is no time limit on how long little one can be in the seat. Group 0+ child seats are rear facing in the car, and often can attach to the pram chassis to become part of a travel system. Group 0+ child seats are suitable from 0-13kg, approximately up to 12-18 months. *Top Tip* Check what position the carry handle must be in – the handle often acts as a roll bar. Group 0+1 child car seats start off rear facing in the car for newborns. When your baby is older, some seats require you to turn forward facing, where others have the option of carrying on with the extra safety of rear facing. Group 0+1 seats are suitable from 0-18kg, which is up to approximately 4 years old. How long should a baby be in a car seat? Young babies are scrunched over in the infant seat, and this causes their oxygen saturation levels to drop, which can be very dangerous for them. When your baby is very small, they should have regular breaks from the seat, particularly if you use the car seat on the pram. Your baby must always use a

Best baby& toddler gear child seat when travelling in the car, but plan in regular stops on long journeys to give your little one a break. Your little one should spend no more than 90 minutes in the seat. How do you fit a car seat? Child car seats can either be fitted with the seat belt, or ISOFIX. Not every child seat has the option of ISOFIX, and some don’t allow belt fitment, some child seats have both. ISOFIX is two hooks in the seat of your car, and an ISOFIX child seat clicks onto these hooks with ISOFIX arms. There is often a third point of anchorage, such as a foot prop, and this prevents the seat tipping in a collision. Both ISOFIX and belt fitted child seats are safe when they are fitted correctly. However, ISOFIX is considered safer as it is easier to fit, so there is less risk of misuse.
When securing your child with a harness, the following steps will help you ensure they are safely restrained... 1. Remove puffy coats, jackets and snowsuits - these cause the harness to fit incorrectly. 2. Ensure the straps are level with your child’s shoulders, from the point that

the straps come out of the seat. If you can’t get them level, then the straps may dip just below the level of the shoulders when rear facing, or just above when forward facing. 3. Tighten the straps, so you can just slip one finger between your child and the harness at collar bone level. Remember, the harness is their seat belt. It needs to hold them in place in a collision, don’t leave it loose!

uying your pushchair is both an exciting and confusing experience. There are so many brands and models to choose from and it seems everyone has an opinion on which model, brand, colour and style you should pick. You obviously want to choose the best and safest pushchair for your baby but how do you make sure you are choosing one that is right for your family? We asked iCandy Expert Midwife & Health Visitor Katie Hilton to give us the low down on the key questions parents should ask retailers when selecting a pushchair for their new bundle of joy.

Can I take it for a test drive? You’re going to be spending a lot of time in the company of this pushchair so it’s important you’re comfortable with it. Take it down from the shelf, take it for a spin around the shop, have a go at collapsing it and then putting it back up, ready to go. You need to know that you will feel confident, especially when you’re alone using the pushchair you decide to purchase. What car seats are compatible with the pushchair? Many parents will use their car seat with their pushchair frame; however remember that a car seat is only to be used for a brief period of time on the chassis of your pushchair. How easy is the harness to use? Strapping a wriggling child into a pushchair really is an art form! I suggest requesting a demonstration from a customer service representative whilst in store to ensure you fully understand how to strap your little one into the pushchair and how to easily get them out, you will also want to know how to lengthen the straps as they grow and develop. Be sure to select something that you find quick and easy to use, particularly

Can it be used from birth? This is a particularly important question to ask when selecting your pushchair. It is vitally important that newborn babies lie flat for the first six months to support spinal development and aid in breathing and digestion. Only pushchairs, which offer a lie flat feature, are suitable from birth, such as the iCandy Raspberry, in all other situations a carrycot should be used, for example an iCandy carrycot. Your baby can start to use a seat unit on a slight incline from six months of age once they are able to hold the weight of their own head and their spine has further developed.

Is the carrycot suitable for overnight sleeping? This question won’t be on the tip of many parents’ tongues, but believe me it’s one your going to want to ask. When a new little bundle of joy comes along your house becomes full of baby paraphernalia, so it comes as an unexpected treat when there is one less thing to worry about. I would seriously recommend discussing pushchair options with a carrycot suitable for overnight sleeping with your retailer. This option allows you to combine two baby items into one and provides

a safe sleeping environment for your baby when away for weekend getaways, at grandparent’s houses, on holiday and during those first six months before the transition to their own bedroom. Now a word of warning, very few carrycots are suitable for overnight sleeping and they have to comply with safe sleeping recommendations as per The Lullaby Trust guidelines. Does it come with accessories and can I easily buy more? When purchasing any pushchair it is important to check what is included. Some models will sell everything separately, so you will have to pay individually for the chassis, seat, carrycot etc. You may then also have to pay separately for a raincover and parasol. So it is worth keeping all of this in mind if you have set yourself a budget.

Can I change the direction of the pushchair? When your baby is newborn they will likely initially be in a carrycot and facing you. They will then transition into a seat and will still prefer to face you rather than be facing out to the busy world. This enables you to interact with your baby, make eye contact and provide reassurance to them that you are still there. However, as your baby grows and develops they will become inquisitive and will want to see what is going on in the big wide world. This is where it comes in useful to be able to turn

Can the pushchair be used in both a single and double mode? Many parents are now thinking long term with their pushchair options, they know that at some point in the not too distant future they will want to add to their family with another little bundle of joy. So this is of course an important consideration when selecting your pushchair. Consider choosing a model which can initially be used in a single mode for your first baby and then potentially be used as a double pushchair using both a seat unit and carrycot, followed by two seat units at a later date, then transforming back to a single seat unit when your older child progresses to walking. Best baby& toddler gear When preparing for your baby’s arrival you need to decide where they will sleep. Leading safe sleep charity The Lullaby Trust recommend that you; “Place your baby to sleep in a separate cot or Moses basket in the same room as you for the first 6 months.” So, if your baby is sharing your room what do you need to consider? Firstly, how warm is your room? Young babies aren’t able to regulate their temperature, keeping them comfortable and particularly not too warm will help your baby sleep better and more safely. A room thermometer such at the Gro-egg will help you easily tell what the temperature is so you can dress your baby appropriately. 16-20°C is the recommended temperature for a baby to sleep in.
Guide to Swaddling Why should I swaddle? Swaddling has well recognised benefits. As Dr Harvey Karp, an expert on swaddling states, “It helps babies soothe faster, stay calmer and sleep longer”. It is comforting for newborns and prevents them from startling themselves with the moro reflex. However, there can be risks associated with swaddling if it is not done properly.
How to Swaddle Safely Setting routines Try and distinguish between a night time and daytime routine, initially new babies can’t tell the difference. By creating a dark environment using a black out blind if evenings and early mornings are light in summer, your baby will associate darkness with time to sleep which will helpful when you introduce a bedtime routine as they get older. Rocking, singing, shushing, patting are all tried and tested techniques for settling baby. Keep trying different things until you work out what your baby likes. Sometimes they are not enough though, particularly with colicky babies. White noise is another way of soothing and calming unsettled little ones. Make sure you choose a white noise gadget that is at a safe decibel level for your baby like a Gro-hush, which also plays the sounds directly to your baby. Great for using in public when you are out and about or travelling and don’t want to disturb those around you.
Issues to be aware of include wrapping too tightly, wrapping in too many layers which could cause overheating, keeping loose fabric away from the head and face, and leaving room around the legs and hips to allow a natural ‘frog-legged’ position for healthy hip development. Babies should also always be placed to sleep on their back. To swaddle safely using a muslin or blanket, search for ‘lets talk about hips, what is safe swaddling?’ on the Gro website. However the easiest and quickest way to swaddle safely is to use a specially designed product such as the Gro-snug. All babies are different and their preferences change over time, but it is never too early to start a nice relaxing routine before bed. Try to keep calm and get some rest yourself as soon as you can. It can be recognised by inconsolable crying, often for hours at a time, for no specific reason – i.e. your baby is not hungry or overtired, doesn’t need a nappy change, and does not have a raised temperature.

Others contain the enzyme lactase to help digest lactose in your baby’s milk. Remember that colic will pass and does not mean you are doing anything wrong. It can be a very stressful time for new parents - so do accept offers of help. Symptoms Colic most commonly occurs in the late afternoon and evening when your baby may cry out in pain, draw their knees up towards the chest and go red in the face. Their tummy may be swollen or bloated as if they’ve swallowed a lot of air, and they might pass wind more than usual. Although distressing for new mums and dads, it is not a serious medical condition and does not cause any harm to your baby. It usually resolves by the age of 4 months, or by 6 months at latest. See your GP if you are concerned about your baby, or if nothing seems to be working and you are struggling to cope.

What to do There are lots of tips and techniques you can try which can help reduce the likelihood of colic occurring: If you’re breastfeeding, check your latching technique. When a baby is incorrectly positioned and tends to come on and off the breast, they may take in air which can trigger colic. Ensuring that your baby finishes on one breast before starting on the next ensures your baby receives hind milk, which is thought to reduce the symptoms of colic. If you’re bottle-feeding, always ensure the teat is full of milk at all times. Some mums like to use anti-colic teats or angled bottles, which may improve colic symptoms, but may not always work for every baby. If you are concerned that your formula milk is a factor in colic symptoms, consult with your health visitor or GP who will
be able to advise you on alternative options. Regular winding and burping during and after a feed can help. After winding your baby following a feed, try keeping them upright for about 30 minutes to an hour to aid digestion. Using slings or infant carriers may help as your baby can hear your heartbeat, which can help to settle them. If you are caring for a baby with colic, there are many options to treat the symptoms – it’s all about finding what works for you and your little one. Lots of mums find that anti-colic massage helps alleviate bloating and wind discomfort in their babies. Your health visitor may be able to advise you on techniques and the National Childbirth Trust (NCT) offers group baby massage classes. For handy how-to videos, visit www.infacol.co.uk. reported 10 million people across the UK have low levels of vitamin D according to NICE. More needs to be done to combat the UK’s growing vitamin D ‘epidemic’ say health pioneers BetterYou, as many parents are unaware of Department of Health (DoH) guidance that all pregnant women, infants and young children aged 6 months to 5 years should take a daily dose of vitamin D to boost the immune system and prevent bones diseases such as rickets. How do you get it? Sunshine and diet are the most common sources. However just 10% of vitamin D is available through diet. 90% of our essential vitamin D must come from our skin’s exposure to the sun, but skin cancer fears have also led to sun screen overuse. With creams higher than Factor 15 blocking vitamin D absorption, vitamin D deficiency is believed to be soaring to epidemic proportions. Our increasingly sedentary, indoor lifestyles mean we have to look to other ways to obtain vitamin D such as supplementation.

After months of testing, by parents from across the UK, alongside the Mumii team, we are delighted to confirm the winners. Over 50 parents came to our testing day this year where pushchairs, car seats and furniture amongst others were assessed. Other items were sent in to family homes and put through their paces on a dayto-day basis by busy parents. Our Editor in Chief, Jo, is hugely passionate about the Best Baby & Toddler Gear Awards. Here she explains why... “I have three children ranging from ten to 14 months old and what you can and should buy a baby has changed dramatically over this time. Each year new items come to
market that help make parenting that little bit easier. It’s always exciting to see these innovations as well as old favourites that stand the test of time.
