When it comes to having a child, there are a million and one things to think about. But choosing the right car seat from the beginning will make life much easier before you bring your little one home. Luke Burns, General Manager at Cybex UK and Ireland, explains everything you need to know Why is it important to choose the right car seat from the start? It’s so important for parents to take their time when choosing a car seat, and ensure that they understand all the key safety features, including how to correctly fit the car seat into their car before purchase. According to a recent study carried out by researchers at Oregon Health and Science University, 95 percent of new parents make at least one error when installing their car seat but this one mistake could cause serious injury to your little one if you were in an accident. A car seat must be used from birth to 12 years or 135cm, it’s important to choose the right car seat in line with your baby’s height and weight, not just age, to ensure maximum safety and comfort for your child. Shop around, do your research, ask questions, and ensure the car seat you choose is compatible with your car. Yes, it can be overwhelming but make sure you’re confident in your purchase.

In doing so, i-Size offers more side-impact protection, over and above R44 (which currently does not include side-impact tests). Many premium brands, including Cybex, have been conducting sideimpact tests for years as this is an important aspect of car seat safety. A rear-facing child seat reduces the risk of injury in a head-on collision by more than 80 percent, when compared to a conventional forward-facing seat. Leading consumer organisations recommend that children remain in rear-facing child seats even beyond Group 0+, preferably up to approximately 4 years or 105cm in an i-Size seat.

It’s also crucial that they have regular breaks from the car seat, are not left in the car seat for more than two hours, and not left in the car seat if they are asleep. How do you know if you have fitted your car seat correctly? The biggest issue when installing a car seat is misuse. However, nowadays car seats have a number of built-in safety features to ensure maximum protection for children. Most modern cars will be fitted with ISOFIX, which provides additional safety and stability along with the car seat belt. You simply click the ISOFIX connectors on the base of your seat into the ISOFIX anchor points in the car. If a car doesn’t have an ISOFIX system, the car seat can be secured with the car seat

belt. We recommend reading the instruction manual, watching videos, and speaking to staff in stores to ensure you’re confident in how to fit your car seat before you purchase one. Which car seat is right for your car? In the UK, all children need to use a car seat from birth until 12 years old (or until they are 135cm tall). The car seat you buy needs to meet EU standards, and your child needs to be in the correct category seat for their age. You should especially check that your vehicle model has ISOFIX anchorage points, and the length of the vehicle seat belt, as this may vary, even during the same production year of manufacture. Ensure you try the car seat in your car before you buy. A GUIDE TO BUYING CAR SEATS

Children’s harnesses must be easy to adjust, so that they can be tightened or loosened depending on what the child is wearing. We recommend carrying out the two-finger test so if you can fit more than two fingers underneath the harness at the child’s shoulder bone, the harness needs to be tightened. Avoid carrying out this test whilst your child has a thick coat on, as it will not ensure the correct harness tension to protect your child. The car seat should offer children who tend to sleep in the car maximum side support and a comfortable sleeping position. Our car seats recline and feature an adjustable headrest to offer maximum comfort and safety.

Remember to keep rearward facing for as long as possible. The priority is to ensure that your child’s head is not over the top of the seat. Once positioned correctly, make sure they have enough leg room.

Rear-facing child safety car seats must not be positioned on the front passenger seat of cars with an activated front airbag. In this instance, the infant car seat must be installed on the rear seat. The safest position in a car is the middle securely fitted there, or behind the passenger seat. We do not recommend that people buy or use second-hand car seats, as they may have been involved in an accident, which could make them unsafe to use. Always purchase from a reputable retailer who can support with aftersales service.

The first thing to consider is what kind of activities you hope to be doing as a family after baby arrives. In essence, where do you think you will be using the pushchair? It’s important to look out for the quality of materials used in the chassis and frame, the strength of the pushchair and its moving parts when you manoeuvre it. Does everything fit together with solid and reassuring clicks? When folded, does the product feel stable (as it will be folded many times during its lifetime)? What level of suspension does it have (not only visibly but within the internal working chassis and wheel parts)? A good way to test this is to put pressure onto the pushchair from above,

Remember, most of the time you will be testing in an unrealistic environment (most likely indoors) – so consider how the pushchair will react to different terrain, bumpy streets and busy, crowded or tight spaces. How comfortable does it look for your baby? A really important question – but one that isn’t just down to luxurious-looking fabrics. A well designed pushchair is first and foremost one that can absorb the impacts of a journey with ease (again, suspension and handling are really important factors here), along with providing an ergonomically designed bassinet and seat that ensures baby will travel comfortably whilst on the move, from the start and over time. The quality of fabrics is important, but really should be considered the icing on the cake of a quality product, rather than the deciding factor. For urban or country living? Or just want to have it all? It is possible to find a product that can provide you with the best of everything to ensure you can live and travel in any environment with your child.

Whether you’re likely to be pounding the city pavements or regularly venturing through country parks and along forest trails, there are always some key functions to check to ensure your pushchair can meet your needs. Where space is paramount and public transport a regular means of travel, it’s a good idea to focus on a lightweight and compact, easy-folding pushchair. Generally, smaller wheels and a neater overall frame size work better in the city, making it easy to hop on and off trains and buses, as well as carrying your pushchair up flights of stairs.

With the ride stability and balance of a well designed double or twin pushchair the drive is surprisingly effortless, especially when considering the weight of two children plus their extra luggage. If you’re thinking of a second child, but perhaps further down the line, a single pushchair with the addition of a comfort wheel board (a seated board that allows an older toddler to ride with their younger sibling) could be the answer for you. HOW BABYWEARING CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE AS A PARENT Finding the right carrier for you and your baby

Whether you just want to keep your tiny newborn close or need your arms free to share hugs and games with your older children – or even make yourself some lunch – a baby carrier that works for you and your family can help keep everyone happy Washing the dishes? Walking the dog? Running the vacuum around the house? Have you thought about how you would get these everyday things done with a baby in tow? A baby carrier or sling is an amazingly comfortable way to keep your baby close to you while freeing up your hands to get things done. It also helps to support the physiology of newborns and toddlers, which can have a positive effect on spine and hip development. Wearing your baby promotes bonding with you and other caregivers in your baby's life. By holding her close, you can soothe your baby and quickly respond to her cues. In a study published in the journal Pediatrics, researchers found that babywearing for three hours a day reduced infant crying by 43 percent overall and 54 percent during evening hours*. You could say using a baby carrier makes for happier babies. And happier babies make happier parents! If this isn’t your first time, having a baby carrier for your newborn can really help with parenting older children. Having baby close to you, away from the boisterous games of older siblings, gives you peace of mind, as well as your hands to deal with all those everyday tasks. Keep your baby close and keep your baby safe. When you’re wearing a sling or carrier, don’t forget the T.I.C.K.S. 3 3 3 3 3 from newborn to 4 years old. Baby wraps can be purchased from around £50, with stretchy wraps tending to be used from newborn to 6 months. Versatility Commonly, you will see small babies carried in a front, parent–facing position in a sling or carrier, but this isn’t the only way you can wear your baby. As she grows and develops, you may prefer to carry in a different position that you and/or your baby find more comfortable. Ergobaby carriers support three or four different carry positions depending on the model. These are front inward facing, hip, back and front outward facing. When shopping for a baby carrier, wearing baby in a front outward facing position is a feature that a lot of parents look for. TIGHT – slings and carriers should be tight enough to hug your baby close to you as this will be most comfortable for you both. Any slack/loose fabric will allow your baby to slump down in the carrier which can hinder their breathing and pull on your back. IN VIEW AT ALL TIMES – you should always be able to see your baby’s face by simply glancing down. The fabric of a sling or carrier should not close around them so you have to open it to check on them. In a cradle position your baby should face upwards not be turned in towards your body. CLOSE ENOUGH TO KISS – your baby’s head should be as close to your chin as is comfortable. By tipping your head forward you should be able to kiss your baby on the head or forehead KEEP CHIN OFF THE CHEST – a baby should never be curled so their chin is forced onto their chest as this can restrict their breathing. Ensure there is always a space of at least a finger width under your baby’s chin. SUPPORTED BACK – in an upright carry a baby should be held comfortably close to the wearer so their back is supported in its natural position and their tummy and chest are against you. If a sling is too loose they can slump which can partially close their airway. (This can be tested by placing a hand on your baby’s back and pressing gently – they should not uncurl or move closer to you.) A baby in a cradle carry in a pouch or ring sling should be positioned carefully with their bottom in the deepest part so the sling does not fold them in half, pressing their chin to their chest.

You’ve planned the nursery, chosen the colours, the crib, the carpet, the cool room accessories. Cute little socks and bodysuits all ready for the big arrival! But, what then? When you bring baby home? Eat, sleep, clean, will be the routine for those first few weeks and while they can’t help with the eat or the clean, safer sleep experts at The Gro Company have been helping parents get their babies to sleep for almost 20 years and have some great advice to help you get bedtimes sorted

WHAT TO EXPECT When preparing for your baby’s arrival you need to decide where they will sleep. Leading safe sleep charity The Lullaby Trust recommends that you "place your baby to sleep in a separate cot or Moses basket in the same room as you for the first 6 months". So if your baby is sharing your room what do you need to consider? Firstly how warm is your room? Young babies aren’t able to regulate their temperature; keeping them comfortable and in particular not too warm will help your baby sleep better and more safely. A colour-changing room thermometer such at the stylish Groegg2 will help you easily tell what the temperature is so you can dress your baby appropriately. 16-20°C is the recommended room temperature for a baby to sleep in. Try to distinguish between a night time and daytime routine as initially new babies can’t tell the difference. By creating a dark environment using a blackout blind, such as the Gro Anywhere Blind, when evenings and early mornings are light in summer, your baby will associate darkness with time to sleep, which will be helpful as you introduce a bedtime routine when they get older. Rocking, singing, shushing and patting are all tried-and-tested techniques for settling baby. Keep trying different things until you work out what your baby likes. Sometimes they are not enough though; white noise is a proven way of soothing and calming unsettled little ones. Sleep aids that play white noise such as the soft, cuddly

The Groswaddledry is a great towel to use for young babies as it helps to recreate the soothing effects of swaddling, creating a calm and cosy environment to settle them just before bed.

GUIDE TO SWADDLING Why should I swaddle? Swaddling has well recognised benefits. Dr Harvey Karp, an expert on swaddling, states that it helps babies “soothe faster, stay calmer and sleep longer”. It is comforting for newborns and prevents them from startling themselves with the moro reflex. However, there can be risks associated with swaddling if it is not done properly. How to swaddle safely Issues to be aware of include wrapping too tightly, wrapping in too many layers (overheating), keeping loose fabric away from the head and face, and leaving room around the legs and hips to allow a natural ‘frog-legged’ position for healthy hip development. Babies should also always be placed to sleep on their back. The easiest and quickest way to swaddle safely is to use a specially designed product such as the Grosnug or the hip-healthy Groswaddle. Both products have been recognised as hiphealthy by leading body the International Hip Dysplasia Institute. The Grosnug has unique curved seams that encourage a natural leg position, while night time changes are made easy with a handy bottom-opening zip. The Grosnug provides everything you need in a swaddle and a newborn Grobag, with the option of arms in for an easy swaddle and snug feeling, or arms out for greater freedom. The hip-healthy Groswaddle is a simple to use wrap with a pocket to keep little legs warm while allowing lots of room to wiggle.

I’m due in winter / summer and I’m not sure what I need to buy? Remember it is more to do with the temperature of the room your baby is sleeping in than the weather outside. If you take the temperature in the room, you can then use the Gro Company guides to work out what weight of Grosnug or Grobag you need. Also consider daytime naps when temperatures might be higher and you might want a lighter weight option. Our top tip is always have a spare for when one is in the wash!

My baby just won’t go to sleep, what can I do? First make your usual checks – are they hungry, do they need a change, are they otherwise comfortable, not too hot or cold? Then some different things to try include swaddling, white noise, rocking, singing a lullaby, a dark calm environment; some people also swear by baby massage or a bath before bed. All babies are different and their preferences change over time, but it is never too early to start a nice relaxing routine before bed. Try to keep calm and get some rest yourself as soon as you can.

BABY SLEEP BAGS The vast majority of parents now use baby or child sleep bags as a safe, reliable and easyto-use alternative to sheets and blankets, with the reassurance babies can’t kick them off, meaning they don’t wake up cold. When should I move to a baby or child sleep bag? Lots of people swaddle for the first two or three months before moving on to a child sleep bag. However it is entirely up to you and you can use a child sleep bag from birth if your baby is big enough (8.13lbs)

Does it have underarm poppers on the 0-6mth size? Does it have a ‘what to wear’ guide? QUALITY – Is it well made, with no rough edges inside? Is it 100 percent cotton? Can it be washed and tumble dried? TOG – Grobags come in 0.5, 1, 2.5 and 3.5 tog options to suit the environment. STYLE – Side zip bags are great for young babies, wrapping around them easily and giving quick access for nappy changing. Travel baby sleep bags are brilliant for holidays or generally if you are out and about a lot as you can transition from car seat or pushchair to cot without disturbing baby. Although they may seem a little daunting at first, some can be fun and extremely rewarding – not least designing your nursery or choosing your baby’s furniture

When it comes to designing a nursery the first decision you’ll need to make is on the theme. This could simply follow a colour scheme or you may want to choose something more specific such as a ‘nautical’ or ‘Scandinavian’ look. Being more specific will help guide the rest of the nursery design and will narrow down your search when you’re choosing items to enhance the space. Once you’ve settled on your theme, you’ll most likely want to decorate the walls before moving on to the most exciting part – filling your nursery with beautiful pieces for your new arrival! Unfortunately, babies create dirty nappies and you’ll probably want a defined changing area to keep things tidy and make the process slightly more pleasant! Feeling your unborn baby’s first kicks is such an exciting time, but keeping track of those movements as your pregnancy develops can be vitally important, as UK charity Kicks Count explains... Kick, flutter, swish or roll. However you describe it, your baby’s movements have a key role to play in your pregnancy. In 2017 the stillbirth rate for the UK reached its lowest point since records began. But pregnancy charity Kicks Count is still pushing to reduce that figure even further. With the help of celebrities such as Holly Willoughby and Mark Rhodes, Kicks Count aims to raise awareness of the importance of baby’s movements in pregnancy. A baby’s movements indicate its wellbeing so it is important mums report any change in their baby’s movements as it can be a sign the baby is in distress. While the role of baby’s movements is receiving more prominence, some women are still confused. Here Kicks Count makes clear the correct advice around baby’s movements so you can be confident you know everything you need to...

Is there anything I can use to help me keep track of my baby’s movements? Some mums may be tempted to purchase devices that claim to listen to their baby’s heartbeat. Professional bodies have long been against their use but last year Kicks Count embarked on a campaign to have the sale of them restricted to professional use only. The campaign has had huge success and has resulted in Mothercare and Tesco, along with other independent retailers, withdrawing them from sale. A bill presented to the Houses of Parliament has led to the Department of Health instructing a review into their use. So what is so bad about home dopplers? Elizabeth Hutton, CEO of Kicks Count, explains:

The safety of the doppler ultrasound devices is stressed in product descriptions, in that they do no harm to the baby, but the risks of delaying seeking medical attention and the limitations of the doppler devices tend to be overlooked By using a doppler for reassurance, the mum may delay seeking medical attention which could be fatal for the baby.

Why shouldn’t I use a home doppler? A doppler is a device that sends out highfrequency sound waves that pass through the skin and tissue and into the abdomen. When the waves encounter movement, such as a baby’s heart beating, they bounce back to the device. The device then translates the movement into sound. The problem is that anything that moves inside the abdomen (whether it’s the baby kicking, air moving in your intestines, the placenta, or blood flowing in the mum’s arteries) is also translated into sound. It takes lots of training and practice to distinguish a baby’s heartbeat from the other sounds. And even if a heartbeat is correctly identified that does not mean the baby is well. But surely they wouldn’t be sold if they weren’t safe? These devices are not intended to be used by pregnant women. They are prescription devices and require training to operate correctly. Even the instructions on these products (although marketed towards mums) state: “It is intended to be used by care professionals, including practical nurses, midwives, relative technicians and physician assistants.” I can understand many retailers cannot read all the instructions for the products they stock and therefore these are being sold to people for whom they are not intended.

I’ve had a previous pregnancy loss and listening to the heartbeat gives me peace of mind. Is that so bad? The most significant risk of home dopplers is that even if identifying a fetal heart correctly, the baby could still be in distress. This could lead to lifethreatening delays in seeking medical assistance. The best indicator of fetal wellbeing is always baby’s movements. If you saw a person collapsed in the street would you check their pulse and walk away? No, you’d probably call an ambulance because this person is clearly unwell, even though they have a heartbeat. It is the same with a baby. If a baby’s movements change, it can be a sign that they are unwell. Just because they have a heartbeat does not mean anything. Everyone has a heartbeat up until the second before they pass away. All a heartbeat tells you is the baby is currently alive, which is the only time something can be done to help a baby in distress. If you wait until you can’t find a heartbeat it’s too late.

Kicks Count would like to empower more mums-to-be to trust their instincts and get to know their baby’s regular pattern of movement. But I don’t want to use it for reassurance, I just want my husband to be able to hear the heartbeat An important message that we try to get across to pregnant women is that home dopplers are not microphones. They are not amplifying the sound of the baby’s heartbeat. They are sending ultrasound waves into your body that reflect off moving blood vessels and simulate a sound. There are a lot of blood vessels in a pregnant woman’s abdomen, the baby’s heart beating being just one. The placenta also pulses at the same rate as the heart and the mother’s main artery runs across the abdomen and that can also be picked up on a doppler. Midwives and doctors train for many years to interpret what they hear, and an untrained pregnant women does not have the necessary skills. The placenta, and the mother’s heartbeat can both easily be mistaken for a fetal heartbeat. In untrained hands it is more likely that blood flow through the placenta or the maternal aorta or iliac vessels will be heard. NICE guidelines even highlight the risks to professionals: “Do not rely solely on the CTG trace for fetal wellbeing. Be aware of limitations and artefacts, ie. doubling of maternal pulse being recorded as fetal heart.” If mums want their partners or children to listen to the heartbeat we suggest asking a midwife to listen in and record it on a smartphone. If it is not being used for reassurance it will not matter that this is not a ‘live’ version of the heartbeat at it is still the heartbeat (and more likely to actually be the baby’s than if listening at home)
