He had a big girth with depth, excellent testicles and super sound foot makeup. He stood on good bone and was exceptionally clean through the front. This bull was purchased by Minnie-Vale Charolais for $36,000 at the recent Venturon bull sale. Sired by WC Milestone 5223 (P) and from a Sparrows Kingston 139Y dam this bull carried a outcross pedigree for many.

Reserve senior bull was Rangan Ronan R40 (P) exhibited by Rangan Charolais. Sired by Tambo River Nevada this bull weighed 850kgs at 22 months. On the dam side this bull is from the highly successful Rangan Park Showgirl family.

In the group classes Venturon Livestock won the Two Bulls under 24 months, Sires Progeny and Dams Progeny. Both the Sires progeny and Dams progeny were calves from the flush of Turnbulls Duty Free 358D and Venturon Naughty But Nice. Winchester Charolais won the Breeders Group.

Gavin and Kristie O’Brien’s success in the Interbreed capped off a great showing for the breed. This was the only Interbreed success for the European sector at the event.

After judging a large group of members and friends gathered for drinks and awards in the shed where Venturon Livestock was announced Most Successful Exhibitor. This is a great result after traveling across the country from Western Australia. Congratulations to all exhibitors for a successful promotion of the breed.

Reserve Champion Middleweight Steer on the Hoof exhibited by Scots All Saints College and bred by L & C Kirk, Warramunga Charolais, Peak Hill NSW.

Charolais breeders and schools presented a great line of purebred steers at Sydney Royal this year. Prior to judging Greg and Leonie Ball selected the representatives for the Charolais team in the Stan Hill Trophy. The selection always gathers a great deal of interest. The three steers that made the team to represent the breed were exhibited by Chevalier College, Myona Charolais and All Saints College. In the hoof judging the Reserve champion middleweight went to Scots All Saints College, Bathurst, with their Charolais steer bred by L and C Kirk which weighed 548kg and measured 11mm for rump fat and 9mm rib fat. He sold for 725c/kg, or $3,973 to Craig Cooks Prime Quality.

Sydney Royal award medals based on Market Specifications, Saleable Meat Yield and Eating Quality. Carcasses scoring more than 90 points from 100 are awarded Gold medals, Silver is 82-89 points and Bronze 74 to 81 points. Analysis of the 172 steers entered saw Charolais carcasses awarded 1 Gold, 1 Silver and 4 Bronze from 12 head entered. This was the third best breed result based on number of medals to number of carcasses and the best performance from the European sector breeds . The only breeds to have a higher percentage placing was Square Meaters (3 head) and Speckle Park (1 head).

The Charolais that won a Gold medal was bred by St Antonio Charolais and exhibited by Scots All Saints College. This carcass scored 90.5 points on the hook and had a dressing percentage of 65.1%.

Silver medal winning Charolais were from Myona Charolais, Wellington High School with 2 steers both bred by Myona Charolais. Two of these steers were sired by Myona Magic Mike and one by Myona Cool Running. Both of these sires have impressive EBVs for EMA.
