Supreme Charolais Exhibit: Winchester Daisy Duke N16E (AI)(ET)(P)
Interbreed Supreme Champion Female (Urquhart Trophy)
Senior and Grand Champion Female exhibited by G & K O’Brien, Orange NSW.
Judge: Mr Scott Myers, Myers Angus & Limousin, The Rock, NSW
Sydney Royal 2022
An early start for judging at Sydney Royal saw the sun shine brightly for the first time in several days in a stroke of good fortune. The Sydney region had received their annual rainfall by mid-April and the show organisers elected to judge in the open air. Not all breeds had the same luck and getting to the ring required some thought. If the old saying there is money in mud is true then bank accounts would be overflowing this year. Judging Charolais this year was Scott Myers from Myers Angus at The Rock in New South Wales. Scott also works in stud stock with agency H Francis and Co. Scott is well known in the Charolais breed having managed Airlie Charolais for some years. Close to 70 head from five states paraded with the judging being livestreamed to a larger audience. It was great to welcome back international visitors including New Zealand and Canada. Junior champion heifer came from the largest class of the day with Venturon Livestock’s, Venturon Naughty But Nice S32 (P) winning the Female 12 to 14 month class. This heifer is one of the oldest Turnbulls Duty Free 358D (P) calves in Australia. This heifer’s dam, Venturon Naughty But Nice was Grand champion female in Adelaide 2019 and her first calf was Supreme Charolais Exhibit at the 2021 Perth Royal show.
Judge Scott Myers commented the “Junior champion heifer was exceptional”, he added, “finding that femininity, expression of rib, depth of body, softness, teat placement and skeletal structural soundness in one package made her a clear standout. It would be a long time before we see a heifer like that again”
Second in this class was Boulview Swazzie (P) shown by South Australian Youth members Alizah, Eleni and Thomas Fogden, Loxton SA.
This heifer was the calf at foot on the cow the Fogden Family entered in the Virtual show conducted by International Charolais and Charbray. Interestingly this class featured heifers from five states of Australia.
Reserve junior champion heifer was Wakefield Amaze 82 (P) exhibited by Greg and Jenny Frizell, Wakefield Charolais, Armidale NSW. This heifer comes from the same family as Wakefield’s National Champion and Brisbane Interbreed winner in 2019, Wakefield Amaze 38 (P). Amaze 82 certainly had that look at me deal with her growth and muscle pattern exceptional.
The Franco Family won two classes in the strongly contested junior heifer section with Caloona Park Louise R65 (P) winning the 18 to 19 months and Caloona Park Nicole R50 (P)(R/F) taking the 19 to 20 months class. Sired by home bred sires Caloona Park Nike Air (P)(R/F) and Caloona Park Nugget (P)(R/F) these heifers stood out with their development and growth for age.
Venturon also won two heifer classes with their Venturon Hillary S91 (P)(R/F) sired by Canadian import HRJ Fan Favourite 804F (P) winning the 9 to 12 months heifer class.
Myona Charolais won the Heifer 14 to 16 months with Myona Penny R15 (P) also sired by Caloona Park Nugget (P)(R/F). Caloona Park Nugget was the Grand Champion Charolais bull at Sydney Royal in 2019 and a member of the winning Interbreed Hordern Trophy team that year.
Youth Members Sharnie and Olivia Franco placed third with their heifer purchased to start their herd, DSK K25 Polly R26E (P). Joshua and Jordan Fenech also placed with their purchase DSK TGL Polly R38E in the class 18 to 20 months heifer.
Several new exhibitors placed throughout the judging including Wildes Pastoral, Taylor Livestock, and Tallimba Charolais. Returning exhibitors to place including Blackduck Charolais, Waterford Charolais, Calmview Charolais, Tayla Miller and Bureen Charolais. Overall the depth was outstanding and ribbons were earnt.
Senior and Grand champion cow was Winchester Daisy Duke N16E (P) exhibited by Gavin and Kristie O’Brien, Orange NSW. This impressive female won the Cow over 36 months’ class and paraded with a well-developed heifer calf at foot sired by Venturon Maximum Impact (P). Judge Myers commented, “this is an exceptional cow, to have a cow with that much power, to have that beautiful front end with a heifer calf at foot with the same femininity, it’s hard to find that combination in one animal. I feel this cow would be an awesome bull breeder, she has it all”.
Sired by LT Wyoming Wind 4020 (P) and from the Supreme Charolais Exhibit at Sydney in 2006, Minnie-Vale Quist Y3E, this cow was Sydney Junior Champion in 2019.
At the conclusion of Charolais judging Scott Myers awarded this cow Supreme Charolais Exhibit. In the Urquhart Trophy, Daisy Duke won the Interbreed Champion Female. One of the three judges on the panel of three for the Interbreed, Jason Strong (Managing Director Meat and Livestock Australia) said “she is really refined and she’s got great depth of body. She moves well and still carries quite a bit of weight in the carcass. She is a really good depiction of how we can have functional, refined females that are still relevant to the meat industry”.
Judge Scott Myers commented, “the Senior Charolais cows were outstanding, the breed has come ahead in leaps and bounds over the years, with fleshing ease, clean fronts, high yielding big ribbed and hip functional females with exceptional udders”.

Junior Champion bull was DSK Real Big Deal R61E exhibited by Chris Knox and Helen Alexander, DSK Charolais, Coonabarabran NSW. Sired by Full French sire ANC Kind (P) this bull won the 14 to 16 months class weighing in at 766kgs and scanning 122cm2 EMA. Judge Myers said, “the junior champion bull had a later maturity pattern”. Scott continued “He was a bull that was balanced, soft with high growth for his age, massive EMA and beautiful fats. He had beautiful skin and hair and ranked as a higher performing bull. The junior bulls were really interesting with a good variety of type which offers the industry access to different tools. The reserve junior bull exhibited heavy weight for age in a more moderate stouter package, it shows how the breed can bring so many tools to the industry and be exceptional in calving and push weight gain in the quest to produce quality finished carcasses the Charolais is renowned for”.
Reserve junior champion bull was Venturon Stamp Duty S42 (P) from the 12 to 14 months’ class. This bull at 12 months weighed 664kgs and scanned 104cm2 EMA. This bull was a flush brother to the junior champion heifer.
