Born Calves: Year Identification for
President’s
Perspective
David Whitechurch
As incoming President, I would like to thank Matt Collins for his dedication and commitment to our breed. It has been a pleasure to have spent time on the board with him, his attention to detail and work ethic has served the breed well and on behalf of the society I wish him all the best with his new endeavours. I would like to thank the current board for their support and confidence to elect me as the President. It is an honour that I take very seriously. When I was getting started in the breed, I had great support from previous presidents including Bill Dunlop, Michael Millner, Gary Noller and David Bondfield who gave me great advice and guidance and now hope that I can give something back to the society.
With a change in leadership of the breed, the board is still focused on our core objectives of maintaining the herd book while keeping the society financially viable. A few changes that we have seen in the previous twelve months have been the introduction of Progressive Ataxia testing and BREEDPLAN Single Step analysis. The society has maintained numbers of calf registrations consistently with previous years showing a positive outlook for the us in the future. Our goal should be to maintain Charolais as the largest European breed of cattle in the country and the number one choice for a terminal sire with strong results for Charolais cross cattle in commercial competitions across the country.
It has been a mixed bag with the weather again this year across the country with some in the south having an excellent year while areas in the north and west have seen some dry periods. With current weather predictions, hopefully we see a return to more general rainfall. With the dry we have seen a drop in the cattle market, and this has also reflected in bull sales. With a change in the season outlook some early bull sales have had a positive result.
Recently BEEF Australia was held at Rockhampton with a very strong showing of Charolais cattle. I would like to congratulate all exhibitors on the quality line-up of cattle shown. For the first time in a few years we held a national dinner and sale with great success there was approximately 150 people in attendance.
During the dinner recognition awards were presented to members that have achieved 50- and 30-years continual full membership. The National Sale was very well supported by both members at the dinner and strong online support. With a new format this sale topped at $55,000 with live animals averaging $24,833 per head. A big thank you to Colin and the staff at the office as these gatherings take a lot of organisation and without their dedication this event would not have happened.
During the national sale there were two lots sold to support the development of Charolais Youth. Thank you to all who supported the auction and congratulations to Henry Pisaturo for purchasing the number 1 Charolais commemorative bell and also to the Price family for outbidding strong competition for the American youth portrait. These funds are a great help for the Charolais youth and with other fundraising activities, is building a great base for the youth program in the future with the first youth stampede in 5 years being held in October at Inverell NSW.
Charolais Domination
Charolais sired calves dominated the Shepherdson and Boyd’s 25th annual Toogoolawah weaner sale once again. Queensland Country Life reported the sale was dominated by well-bred Charolais infused types, the 5320 calves yarded created strong competition among both local and western buyers, particularly from the Taroom and Roma districts.
This sale offers Charolais sired calves sourced from the tough breeding country in and around the Brisbane Valley predominantly from Bos Indicus cross dams. Commercial producers in this region have long recognised the benefit of heterosis and the impact of a Charolais sire.
Row after row of white and caramel coloured Charolais pens of 10 to 20 head was a sight to behold. It was evident that good quality Charolais genetics have been used by many of the vendors, as these weaners were thick topped and long with the first ten pens quickly selling to average $1,244 per/ head. Marketed by the agents as “coastal bred weaners bred to perform wherever they go” saw many finding new homes in the Roma, Taroom and local areas.
This year outstanding quality weaner steers topped at $1,370, while heifers hit an impressive $1,100. Producers around the yards put the market at about 430-460c/kg live for the better steers. Paradise Grazing, Nanango, sold an outstanding run of 325 predominantly Charolais-cross, with the steer portion topping $1,370, and other pens making $1,350 and $1,210.
Luck Farming, Mount Mort, sold Charolais-cross weaner steers for $1320. Eskdale Cattle presented 573 top quality Charolais-cross steers, which topped at $1,330 and $1,300. The Gittins family, Goomeri, sold quality Charolais-cross steers for $1,270 and Droughtmasters for $1,090 highlighting the Charolais dollar advantage achieved through crossbreeding. Jilrift, Old Hidden Vale, Grandchester, sold outstanding Charolais-cross for a top of $1,260.
Toogoolawah’s heifer offering was also in strong demand with Eskdale Cattle selling quality heifer weaners for $1,100, $930, $910. Luck Farming also sold an excellent draft of Charolais-cross perfect as future breeders for $1,020. Maree Duncombe’s F1 Charolais-cross heifers made $1,000, while Paradise Grazing sold Charolais-cross at $990, $960 and $960.
The best pen of Charolais infused steers judges by the Sale judge went to Eskdale Cattle Company operated by Matt and Melissa George, selling for $1,280/hd. Eskdale Cattle Co also took out the best pen of Charolais infused heifers which went onto become the Champion pen of heifers selling to $1,100. Eskdale Cattle Co yarded 970 head of quality weaners.
Paradise Grazing offering an outstanding line of 325 head including the Charolais Society sponsored, Best pen of Charolais infused heifers selling to $990 and their top pen of steers to $1,370. The Charolais Society sponsored Best pen of Charolais infused steers went to Dick & Cate Buckham, Tarome topping at $1,220 per head.

Shakespeare threw out a great quote in “to be or not to be”. As an individual, couple, team, company or breed society, we all have a choice, accept life as it is or strive to change the narrative. I am pleased that Australian Charolais breeders choose the “to be” a breed of choice option and took steps to change the early narrative of European breed imports. When you consider larger growth cattle breeds were introduced in many cases to smaller framed dams it is not inconceivable some issues would be encountered. Early negatives assigned to the breed were taken as a challenge and the actions that followed has seen the evolution of an Australian Charolais gene pool that is desirable, adapted and dependable in many regions of the country.
Importantly the attributes that made the breed the first logical European breed option in this country have been maintained and improved over the generations of breeding. We have also kept our breed visually identifiable as Charolais. This is of value to potential buyers in identifying breed content in the marketplace. Take the Toogoolawah Weaner sale where the Charolais sired weaners are strongly in demand. The buyers know they perform, time and time again (and pay for them!).
Australian breeders have imported genetics from all corners of the globe to access and enhance performance traits of significance to our industry. This has resulted in a truly Australian Charolais type that has relevance to our environment and markets.
The impact the Charolais breed now has within the Australian Beef industry is a testament to every member of the Charolais Society of Australia over the last 55 years. As we head towards the future we need to be sure as seedstock producers we listen, observe and act on industry signals to ensure the breed remains relevant.
The Australian red meat industry has set a target to be carbon neutral by 2030 (CN30). This means that by 2030, Australian beef, lamb and goat production, including lot feeding and meat processing, aim to make no nett release of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions into the atmosphere (MLA). Charolais genetics with their increased production efficiencies and weight for age have key assets for reducing emissions intensity. Utilizing the heterosis advantage from well-planned cross breeding programs is a great opportunity for commercial producers to increase efficiency and lower the age their cattle are turned off. Through the Southern Multibreed Project we have a foot in the door of new and exciting research and industry direction to substantiate this.
An important take home message for all seedstock producers is the fact there is significant variation in traits within a breed as across breeds. Not all Charolais share the same performance level, not all Angus will marble highly, this is why objective measurement of traits is essential. Not all-important traits are easily evaluated visually and this will be a future challenge as new traits come on line as we move to increased documentation of a sustainable industry.
There is immense power when a group of people with similar interests gets together to work toward the same goals “ “

The Charolais brand belongs to the collective and we all have a responsibility to protect and enhance the breeds reputation and capabilities. A cohesive message echoed by many can send strong signals to the industry on the Charolais advantage. It is the role of every member to reflect on their contribution to the greater promotion of the Charolais identity and be willing to participate. A small local action by every member when multiplied across the membership becomes quite monumental.
This doesn’t mean that the breed needs to become a homogenous product. Members need to maintain a focus on their market, and ensure compliance with the traits in that system. High milking ability in one environment may be detrimental in another environment depending on feed resources. Variation in the Charolais gene pool across all traits is highly advantageous. Genetic variation allows selection for traits that may change in their significance.
Marbling (IMF) is a great example, this trait I assume in the 1970s had little selection intensity in Charolais breeding programs. Modern research gives positive signals to improve this trait for benefits in eating quality. Meat and Livestock Australia’s (MLA), Meat Standards Australia grading program (MSA) highlight benefits in improving this trait. MSA was developed to improve the eating quality consistency of beef and sheep meat. MSA Marbling score is defined as having a high influence as a trait on the MSA Index which may encourage breeders to place an increased emphasis on this trait.
In 2022-23 it was estimated MSA delivered a record $259 million in additional farm gate returns to beef producers (MSA 2022-2023 Annual Outcomes Report). We have Charolais genetics identified in the BREEDPLAN analysis that offer higher levels of IMF% . This allows selection for improvement if this trait is of importance to you.
Performance recording allows breeders to select for traits of significance identified for their market systems. Disciplined use of data allows breeders to track progress and correct deficiencies. The Trans-Tasman Charolais BREDPLAN evaluation has now been using genomics in a Singlestep format for six months and the outcomes have been positive. We have seen increased accuracy on younger cattle which has benefits in selecting replacements with increased confidence. We have included technical articles in this publication on the actions of genes. We strongly encourage breeders to continue to submit data to BREEDPLAN to keep herds closely related to the Charolais reference population. Traits of significance may change in the future as we look to document and identify animals that have traits contributing to the future sustainability process.
BREEDPLAN regularly runs courses for breeders wishing to increase their knowledge of the analysis and the practical day to day requirements. The Society will advise members when these are available. If members have specific questions please reach out to either the Society of BREEDPLAN and we will endeavour to head you in the right direction to answer your query.

Earlier in the year I had the opportunity to network with our BREEDPLAN analysis partners, Charolais Breeders New Zealand. I participated in their annual herd tour and Annual General Meeting over three days. I highly recommend these tours to members to jump the ditch and see Charolais in different environments and the success the breed has achieved in New Zealand. Over the tour I had the opportunity to chat with the management team and meet Performance Beef Breeders NZ (PBB) staff. These opportunities to network and build close working relationships with our global partners are always beneficial.
Australian Charolais will host a group of International Charolais Youth at Brisbane Royal followed by a short tour to give them an insight into Australian Charolais and agriculture. If you are at Brisbane Royal please take the opportunity to chat with our international delegates, the exchange will be beneficial both ways. To date we have sent three Australian youth on these exchanges, Heidi Nicholls, Sarah Nesbitt and Amanda Cavenagh and have been impressed with their reports back. Charolais Charbray International see this International Youth Exchange as vital to building a cohesive global presence.
Australia will also host (hopefully!) the World Congress here in 2026. Expect announcements on the timing and location of this event so planning can start in the near future. It was unfortunate to have to cancel this event in 2020 after so much work had been invested to making a program to show our cattle and country to the best advantage. As this publication hits your mailbox the 2024 World Congress will be well underway in Canada. We have a substantial number of Australians on the tour and look forward to offering potential visitors as much information as we can supply. The international Charolais events such as World Congress and Technical Conferences are fantastic learning opportunities. They also offer the opportunity to meet Charolais breeders from around the world and share learned experiences, if you have never attended one of these events, I highly recommend the opportunity.
Congratulations to Amy Whitechurch, Dynamite Charolais, Inverell NSW. Amy entered her cow, 4 Ways Refine R32E (P) into the Charolais International Virtual show and was awarded the Grand champion Purebred female by a panel of International judges.
Locally, we have recently received the resignation of Matthew Collins from the Society Board of Directors. Matt has been on our Board from 2016 to 2024, served as Treasurer for five years and President for three years. His contribution to the management of this organization has been exceptional and his years of business experience has been a resource to tap into. We extend our appreciation to Matt for his contribution to not only current management of the society but also his vision of the future financial stability of the society. Sapphire Halliday from Victoria also concluded her term on the board at the start of the year after two terms (4 years). Thank you, Matt and Sapphire, for contributing to the breed at this level.
Beef Australia has just wrapped up and comprehensive reports are included in this edition. The Society had a wellattended site in the Genetics Pavilion and I would say the site received more enquiry this year than the last three Beef events. Particularly notable was the enquiry from Bos indicus herds wishing to access higher grid pricing for their product. The breed performed strongly across the competitions hosted by Beef Australia and many members took the opportunity to observe and network at the event. The revised format of the National Sale was a great success and we extend our sincere appreciation to everyone involved in making that happen. The opportunity at Beef Australia to commence the roll out of 50 year continuous full membership awards was exciting and well deserved for the herds that were presented to.
I hope you enjoy this publication, particularly the articles from Neogen on gene activity and Singlestep. Let’s hope for great spring bull sales, a strong cattle market and rain for those in the south and west.

Virbac Weaner Champions
Southern Weaner sales across Victoria feature from January to March. Victorian Charolais breeders present a Charolais champion pen at the major sales in their state rewarding vendors for presenting top calves for auction. Champion pen vendors receive Virbac product available by Region sponsors, Virbac Animal Health.
Across the Victorian circuit of weaner sales, a staggering number of calves change hands in a tight timeframe. Stock and Land reported in the first two weeks of January alone, 55,863 young cattle went under the hammer across the state. The gross value of the this offering was $57,009,309 on a softer market than the previous years. Charolais calves offered in these sales presented with top weight for age and muscling and vendors saw strong demand for their product.
At the Birregurra Weaner Sale Heather and Brian Neale won the “Virbac Champion Charolais Pen”, with their 16 Charolais cross calves, 10/11 months old, average weight 410kg @ 305c/kg for $1,260 a head. The Neale family also sold the top pen of Charolais cross heifers at $1,050. Charles
Stewart Howard director and auctioneer Shelby Howard said strong buyers flocked to Colac Regional Saleyards, which yarded 3300 head of cattle, from regions that received recent heavy rain. He said generally, heavy cattle made between $1050-$1100 in some areas while lighter cattle made up to $980-$1000. Other notable Charolais sales included Williams Enterprise with 6 Charolais cross steers at 457kg, 10-11 month old generating $1,220 per head.
At the NVLX sale at Barnawartha the Virbac Champion pen of steers was presented to MJ & EE Turner for 9 Charolais cross weaner steers averaging 420kg. These calves sold for $1,070 per head.
Champion Heifer pen was Vincent and Karen O’Neil, Sandy Creek, Victoria with 17 Rangan blood Charolais cross heifers averaging 437kg. This pen made $1,160 per head.
The Virbac champion pen at Wangaratta was offered by Ross and Paula Briggs, Dederang Victoria. Ross and Paula have used Charolais sire for more than forty years and saw their 26 Charolais cross steers sell for $1,040. With an average weight of 381kg these calves sold for $2.97c/kg and featured Huon and Rangan Charolais genetics.
Nagnom Family Trust, Osbornes Flat, sold 27 Steers, 350 kgs to realise $1,060. These Rangan Charolais bred calves came back at $3.03/kg. Deepdale P/C Tallarook, Vic, sold 10 Palgrove sired steers weighing an average 357 Kgs for $1,050.
Regular supplier of the Virbac Champion pen at Hamilton, Ricky Willis again presented a top quality product. He offered 18 Charolais cross weaned calves by Mt William & Morgiana Sires. This pen averaged 377kg, selling for @$3.50 or $1,319 a head. Southern Grampians Livestock agent Dylan Praolini said much of the Euro cattle was a certain highlight of the sale. “There’s a lot of demand from Gippsland on those European blood cattle, along with many feedlotter guys. The European blood cattle today were well represented here today and sold to strong demand,” he said. The top per head price went to a heavy pen of seven Charolais cross calves sold by Boolong, 434kg, for 330c/kg or $1,432 per head. Boolong also sold 18 Charolais Cross Steers. Mt William Blood, weaned and weighing 380kg for $1,254.
The Charolais calves sold well at the Yea Weaner Sale on the 19th January. The Virbac Charolais Champion Pen was awarded to G & H Hauser with 19 10/11 month old Charolais Cross calves 391kg, $1,470 or $375c/kg. Gerard was extremely happy with the result of the Charolais cross steers as his black steers the same weight came back at $1,400. He is impressed with the way the Charolais cattle sell. The steers were heading off to Leongatha to be finished. They will have 90 days in a feed program, the purchaser said that he has purchased the Hauser Charolais cross cattle for a number of years and he is very happy with the article and that they have great finishing ability.
Graham Smith, Yarra Junction, won the Virbac best presented pen of Charolais steers ribbon at Pakenham. These 10 Charolais steers had an average weight of 390kg, and sold for $1,370 or 351c/kg. P and L Burgi, Gruyere, sold 23 Violet Hills-blood steers, 403kg, for $120 or 327c/kg. GM and DE Derix, Tinamba, sold 22 Ashwood Park-blood steers, 410kg, for $1,380 or 336c/kg.

Early March saw the sales heading up to the Victorian High Country Calf Sale circuit. Sale three in the Mountain Sale Circuit is Benambra which traditionally features Hereford cattle.Over the last few years a Charolais influence has been building at this sale. The countryside and the cattle overall were showing the effects of the recent dry conditions in this area. Judge Trevor Robinson awarded the ‘Virbac’ Best Presented Pen Charolais/ Charolais x Weaners to Bernard and J.B. Carroll, ‘Craig Gowan’, Hinnomungie. This pen featured 20 Charolais cross steers which sold for $1,400. Their second pen of Charolais cross steers made $1,310 per head. S.F. Seivers sold their top Charolais sired pen of six for $1,190 per head.
In the January Weaner sale wrap up in the Stock and Land, agents commented on the increased cost of freight, Sam Savin, Hamilton said “Freight is a massive cost now which is $7-$8 a kilometre and in the last two years, it has risen by $1-$2 per animal” reducing the number of calves heading to northern buyers. He also ocmmented on the premium weaned calves preferred by feedlots being around $100 to $150 per head.
State Chairperson, Rob Abbott commented at the Hamilton sale “the sale had some more positivity to it. The top pen of Charolais was higher than the top pen of Herefords. There was a bit more of a buzz when the Charolais cattle were selling”.
Charolais Society General Manager Colin Rex commented “when you read sale reports where the vendor has been using Charolais sires for over 40 years, you know the breed has a lot to offer. Top quality Charolais sired calves are still sought after in the weaner sales and offer tremendous value to the purchaser. We know their ability to kick ahead on feed and add that weight that pays when resold later in life.” Victorian Charolais breeders & the Charolais Society of Australia appreciate the sponsorship and support of Virbac at the 2024 Southern Weaner Sales highlighting excellence in weaner presentation. https://au.virbac.com/

Botswana government representative Thapelo Seilaleksos spent the last six months travelling Australia, scouting for suitable cattle on behalf of the government to lift the country’s genetic pool and provide quality genetics to its producers at a subsidised rate. He said the country had been reliant on genetics from South Africa, but wanted to cease livestock trade from there due to “uncontrollable foot-andmouth disease”.
Mr Seilaleksos spent months assessing the Australian climate and environment to see which side of the country would be most similar to Botswana. “We bought most cattle from Western Australia as the conditions were closest to our country. It is currently very dry in WA, they haven’t had rain for the last six months. The conditions in Botswana are very hard.” The Botswana government is aiming to produce as many embryos and semen as possible from the imported seedstock and then supply these genetics to their farmers.
Cattle from European, British and Bos Indicus breeds were purchased with the total shipment being 92 head of which 62 were registered females for embryo production. The delegation also purchased 150 head of dairy goats to export live to Botswana. Mr Seilaleksos said chartering costs were significant, but the government considered it a worthy investment. “Cost to us really doesn’t matter, it’s the results we are looking for. Any business you start is going to cost you, and we are looking at this like a business. The benefits outweigh the costs,” he said.
Prior to this live animal export, Queensland breeders, Graham and Katrina Blanch exported semen from their sire, Charnelle Panama (AI)(P)(TW) to South Africa. This sire now has progeny in Africa with his first calves just weaned. Louwcoe Charolais reported their satisfaction on their social media, “Panama heifers weaning at 253kg on the tough Eastern Freestate pastures and mountains”. Panama sired by Elder’s Blackjack 788B (P) is a trait leader in our BREEDPLAN analysis for 200, 400- and 600-day weight as well as scrotal size. Charnelle Panama (P) semen has now been marketed into Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, United Kingdom and Germany.
The Charolais animals in the air lift to Botswana were supplied from Kooyong, Culham and Liberty studs in Western Australia. In total two sires and nine heifers were selected for export. From the Liberty and Culham herds, one yearling bull and five yearling heifers were selected. Three of these heifers were sired by Palgrove Poundmaker P2046E (P)(R/F), a sire that has bred very well for their program. The other heifers were sired by Liberty Panchali (P) and Liberty Just Ramblin Along (P).
The bull Liberty U Betcha U33 (AI)(P)(R/F) was a calf at foot on the Reserve Senior Champion Charolais female at Perth Royal 2023. Sired by Liberty Smokin’ Aces S16E (AI)(P), U33E is a homozygous poll red factor bull ranking highly for growth traits with above average birthweight and Gestation length EBV’s.
David and Jan Ellis, Kooyong Charolais supplied Kooyong Titanium (P)(R/F) for export to Botswana. Titanium is pictured at Kooyong prior to commencing quarantine. He weighed 904kg at 21 months after a very dry spring and summer.

Beef Australia 2024
Beef Australia 2024, the biggest beef exposition in the Southern Hemisphere saw the return of international guests adding to the 119,324 movements through the gates of the Rockhampton Showgrounds over the course of the week. Over 100 head of Charolais contributed to over 1,300 head of stud cattle judged in the main ring. The Charolais breed was also well represented in the Commercial and Carcase competitions highlighting our motto, Cross Into Profit.
The organisers of the Beef Australia event packed every square inch of the Rockhampton showground and the crowds flocked in. With seminars, live cattle, cattle handling equipment, herd recording programs, AI Companies and so much more provided an opportunity for beef producers to gather information on the latest trends, equipment and market opportunities.
The Society had a double trade fair site in the Exhibition hall to promote the breed. The Society last had a site in this location back in 2018. Our site this year had a visual presence from the outside walkway and featured large images of Charolais crossbred progeny over various maternal breeds. Over the course of five days Charolais breed promotional material was given to the large volume of visitors to the site. Many members took the pathway to the Charolais site and it was a focal point for staff conversations as well as a spot to rest for a while or drop some bags off.
Several Charolais society members had their own trade site contributing to the Charolais message across the event.
General Manager, Colin Rex said “the traffic through our trade site was the best volume of serious enquiry of the last three Beef events” He added “many commercial breeders where looking to access higher grid prices for their sale cattle through the use of crossbreeding, particularly Brahman breeders. There is a great recognition of the value a Charolais sire can add to these herds and this should lead to increased volume of bull sales in the future”.
The value of the Charolais cross was well proven at the Nutrien Ag Solutions Commercial Cattle Championships at Gracemere where many pens had the Charolais phenotype. A large crowd of spectators witnessed judges Peter Collins and Charolais youth member Jaime Vosper (Associate judge) work through the stud cattle on centre ring with cattle from three states. Exhibitors presented a superb line of industry relevant cattle through the judging with results well spread amongst exhibitors.
Beef 2024 by the Numbers:
• 119,324 movements through the gates
• Over 600 international delegates from 35 countries
• Over 3,800 school children participate in the Suncorp Bank School’s Program,
• 79,000 people tuned in live, across the world on Beef TV
• Over 1,300 head of cattle judged in Centre Ring, from across 28 breeds
On the Wednesday night after stud cattle judging over 150 people journeyed to the Callaghan Park Racecourse for the Charolais dinner and the National Charolais Sale. It was a great roll up with international visitors Brent Fisher (NZ) and Charlotte Hitchens (UK) and many members involved in the breed over the years. Our caterers, A Days Grazing (Yeppoon) delivered with a beautiful three course meal featuring beef. During the evening Elders Studstock and Auctionsplus conducted the National sale which was spectacularly successful.
At the dinner presentations were made to recognise 30and 50-year members in attendance as well as the results of the Youth Paraders event assessed during the judging that day. The high level of youth participation was extremely pleasing with our youth achieving some awesome results.
The Society extends our appreciation to everybody that contributed to the success of the Charolais breed at Beef Australia 2024. Our breed had a presence across the grounds and events with the combination of these efforts adding to our profile. Full reports on the events are compiled in the following pages. It’s three years away but now is the time to start planning Beef Australia 2027, onward and upwards!

Clearview Raine, from Clearview Charolais, Mount Walker, took the senior title on her way to becoming grand champion but Mr Collins had high praise for the trio of class champions. “The thing that pleases me today is how similar they all are,” he said. “Functional females have that smoothness of shoulder, and then they’ve got that A shape. They’re beautiful through the front end but they’re wide through the back end. They’ve got great udder setups, good on their feet and legs. “We are so pleased that we have animals of this calibre to be judged.” The judges then selected 4 Ways MLR Frankie S45E (P)(R/F) shown by the Whitechurch Family, Inverell as their Reserve Senior Champion Female.
Moongool Tanner may have only just scraped into the senior bull class but he’s showed age is no barrier, taking out grand champion Charolais male after winning the Bull 21 to 24 months class. Parading at 905kgs this bull scanned 148cm2 EMA and was sired by DSK K25 Quickshake Q29E (P). Judge, Peter Collins said the bull from Moongool Charolais, Yuleba, was still only a baby but had a lot of muscle. “He’s structurally very sound with a big sirey head, great hindquarter and just a brilliant top on him and because of that top and hindquarter he is my grand champion,” Mr Collins said. Second in this class Golden Rose Trigger (AI) (ET)(P)(R/F) who made the trek from Victoria for Murray Van der Drift and Erin Ferguson. This bull sired by HJR Bulletproof 411B (P) was Reserve Junior champion at Melbourne Royal in 2023. His flush sister was the Supreme Charolais Exhibit at the same show. Trigger weighed 1,062kgs at Beef. Moongool Trademark (P) placed third in this class.
Reserve Senior Champion male came from the 24 to 30 months class with Moongool taking the senior double. Moongool Tab (P)(R/F). Myona Stoplight S18 (AI)(P) shown by Vanessa Selleck placed second in the class making the trip from southern Victoria worthwhile. Myona Stoplight S18 was Senior champion bull at Sydney Royal this year.
Winner of the 30 to 48 months class was Veejay Downs Showtime (P) for Veejay Downs. This incredibly free moving sire feature great length of body and weighed in at 1,047kgs at 31 months and an EMA of 147cm2.

Clearview Charolais won the Dams Progeny Stakes with Palgrove Flaxen M35E progeny which included the Grand Champion Female.
In the Interbreed competitions Charolais made the short list in all three sections. During the duration of judging there was a great crowd of spectators boosted by the online audience watching on the Stocklive live stream.
The depth and standard of exhibits in the Charolais ring was pleasing and many exhibitors had travelled considerable distance to attend and promote their program. Another highlight of the judging was the success of our Charolais Youth members during the judging.
The Charolais Youth committee conducted a parading competition through the stud classes with over 20 participants. Greg and Jenny Frizell, Wakefield Charolais, Armidale sponsored this section. These results are featured in the Youth Reports in this publication.

Commercial Cattle
The Nutrien Ag Solutions Commercial Cattle championships at CQLX attracted a significant entry of 1,685 head. Judges Glenn Poole of Teys Australia and Craig Price from Kilcoy Pastoral Company judged the entries on Sunday with the pens sold on the Monday morning. The sale of the cattle on that morning saw prices well above the current market, rewarding vendors for their support of the competition.
Overall, 1,685 head of commercial cattle sold for a gross of $3.994 million, to surpass the gross of just over $3.6m achieved in 2021, with steers averaging $2,464 per head and heifers averaging $1,970/hd.
Mac and Gayle Shann, Cantaur Park, of Lamont Droughtmasters, Mt Coolon, claimed the broad ribbon for Champion pen of lot fed heifers. Their 10 milk tooth Charolais sired females weighed in at 578kg following 121 days on feed, with judges commenting on their standout uniformity. Mac Shann said the rising two-yearold heifers were out of Droughtmaster cows by Moongool and 4 Ways Charolais bulls. “These are predominantly the first run of our heifers. We sacrifice them all once every three years for Beef Week and we’re more than happy to be in the winners’ circle,” he said.
“We find the Droughtmaster Charolais cross to be a beautiful, soft animal and when we started getting beautiful terminal heifers like these year after year we decided to keep one paddock of these as breeders.
Our country is pretty marginal and the Droughtmaster cow dominates any other breed in that tougher country, being able to produce a calf year on year. Being able to maintain the Droughtmaster as our stable cow line and cross with a Euro bull like this gives us ease of management and access to any market.” Their winning pen of 10 Droughtmaster/ Charolais-cross Champion Lot Fed Heifers sold to Nolans Meats for 408c/kg, to average $2313/head.
The Shann family success continued with similar bred cattle in the Pen of Ten Steers (max 2 tooth), min 100day feed suitable for Export. In this class their placed second with an average weight of 605kg (milk teeth).
Palgrove Pastoral Co placed third in this class with their predominantly milk tooth team averaging 644kg.
In Class 2: Pen of 10 Steers 640/760kg, max 4 teeth, min 100days feed suitable for Export, Riverview Cattle Co placed 3rd. Their ten steers averaged 716kg liveweight. Riverview also placed second in am Export market class.
Mac and Gayle Shann exhibited a pen of 10 Charolais cross Droughtmaster steers averaging 583.5kg for a second in the Pen of 10 Steer, max 2 tooth 70 days feed suitable for Heavy Trade markets. Their equivalent pen in the same feed specs for Light trade placed 2nd. This pen averaged 479.5kg. This highlights the versatility of the Charolais cross cattle to be finished for different markets with success.
In the Heifer class 420/520kgs. Min 70 days feed suitable for the Light Trade market, HGP free Hutchinson Grazing placed second and Hatton and Co placed fourth with Charolais cross entrants. The success of Charolais influence was also seen with many Charbray described cattle in the event achieving success.

Technical UNDERSTANDING THE RANDOM SHUFFLE OF GENES
Genomic testing is widely considered the most significant transformational technology in livestock breeding since the introduction of Estimated Breeding Values, or EBVs, with genomic information now routinely incorporated into beef, sheep and dairy genetic evaluations around the globe. To understand the value of genomic testing for the prediction of breeding value in these genetic evaluations, one must first understand how genes are inherited from one generation to the next.
An animal’s genes are contained within its DNA, which is bundled into chromosomes. Livestock have pairs of chromosomes, with the number of chromosome pairs in an animal’s DNA varying across the different species (table 1). For example, cattle have 30 pairs of chromosomes, or a total of 60 chromosomes. One chromosome in each chromosome pair is inherited from the animal’s sire, and one from the animal’s dam.
When the animal reproduces, for example, a sperm is produced by a sire, one of the chromosomes in each pair is selected at random and passed on to the progeny. So, when a sperm is produced, the selection of chromosomes that are passed on is similar to flipping a coin numerous times (i.e. 30 times in cattle, 27 times in sheep), with a different combination of heads and tails returned each time a new sperm is produced.
If we label the chromosomes the sire inherited from his father as blue (paternal) and the chromosomes inherited from his mother as pink (maternal), the number of possible combinations of the sire’s paternal and maternal chromosomes that can be passed onto the progeny is illustrated in Figure 1
Delving into this in more detail, the number of possible chromosome combinations that can be passed on in cattle is 1,073,741,824 (i.e. 230), while in sheep the number of possible chromosome combinations is 134,217,728 (i.e 227). And this number ignores the exchange of segments between paternal and maternal chromosomes that occurs in a biological process called recombination.
The manner in which chromosomes are passed from one generation to the next is often described as the progeny receiving a random sample of the sire’s genes, or mendelian sampling, and with the number of possible combinations, the genes passed on in no two sperm are exactly alike.
TALKING GENOMICS
Andrew Byrne
How Are Genomically Enhanced Breeding Values Calculated?
Genomic selection in seedstock animals most commonly involves the inclusion of genomic profiles in existing industry genetic evaluations, such as those conducted by BREEDPLAN and Sheep Genetics, to calculate genomically enhanced breeding values.
Genomically enhanced breeding values enable more accurate selection decisions, earlier in an animal’s life, and for additional traits and animals, and ultimately, greater genetic improvement.
This edition of talking genomics discusses how genomic information is incorporated in the calculation of genomically enhanced breeding values within the BREEDPLAN and Sheep Genetics genetic evaluations.
Single Step Genetic Evaluation
The manner in which genomic information is included in industry genetic evaluations is often referred to as a ‘single-step’ genetic evaluation, reflecting that genomic profiles are analysed simultaneously with other sources of information (e.g. pedigree, phenotypes), placing appropriate emphasis on all available sources of information, to calculate a single, genomically enhanced breeding value.
A unique feature of single-step genetic evaluation is that breeding values can be calculated for both animals with and animals without genomic profiles. This differs to some earlier approaches that could only handle individuals with genomic profiles.
Likewise, in contrast to some earlier approaches, a ‘genomic breeding value’ is not calculated in a single step genetic evaluation, only the overall, genomically enhanced breeding value that is published.
Figure 1. In industry genetic evaluations, such as those conducted by BREEDPLAN, Sheep Genetics and DataGene, genomic profiles are analysed simultaneously with other sources of information (e.g. pedigree, phenotypes) to calculate a single, genomically enhanced breeding value.
Figure 1. Illustration of the shuffling of chromosomes that occurs during sperm formation. The first column represents the bull’s two sets of chromosomes. Chromosomes inherited from the bull’s sire are in blue. Chromosomes from the bull’s dam are in pink. The other columns depict possible combinations of paternal and maternal chromosomes in individual sperm cells. There are more than 1 billion possible combinations.
Genomic Relationships in Practice
The real-world examples below demonstrate how utilisation of genomic relationships improves the estimation of the relationship between animals in a single step genetic evaluation.
The same number of possible combinations is true for each egg produced by a dam, meaning the number of possible chromosome combinations inherited by animals from their parents is literally in the billions.
Based on pedigree information, the sires would be estimated to have a relationship of 0.5 with each of
Think for a moment about your favourite set of full siblings, being brothers or sisters with the same parents. Perhaps this is your favourite set of embryo flush mates, your brothers and sisters, or your children. The dissimilarity between full siblings may be striking, for example, one may be short and the other tall, one may have light hair and the other dark hair, or one may be laid-back and the other excitable.
The similarities and dissimilarities between full siblings are due to differences in the chromosomes that they have inherited, and the environment they have experienced.
SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR BREEDING VALUES ?
In their simplest form, the estimated breeding value (EBV) calculated for an animal can be thought of as one half of the sire’s breeding value, plus one half of the dam’s breeding value, plus the mendelian sampling term. The mendelian sampling term represents the animal’s difference from the average of its parents’ breeding values and is due to the random sample of genes and chromosomes that the calf inherited.
This is where genomics now provides considerable value. In a genetic evaluation that incorporates genomic information, such as the industry single step genetic evaluations that are conducted in the beef and sheep industries in Australia and New Zealand (e.g. BREEDPLAN, Sheep Genetics), predominantly for seedstock animals, genomic data provides an insight into the random sample of chromosomes that an animal has inherited, which enables an estimate to be made of the Mendelian sampling term early in an animal’s life.
their offspring. Similarly, the sire’s offspring would each be expected to have a relationship of 0.25 with one another.
Genomic testing reveals that while, on average, these relationships are correct, the relationship between the sire and each individual offspring differs, and some offspring are more closely related to each other than they are with others.
For example, in the real world example provided in Figure 2, based on averages, the animal would be expected to share 25 percent of its genes with each of its grandparents. But, due to the random shuffle of genes and chromosomes, this percent can vary greatly. Genomic testing reveals that the animal shares 25.8 percent of their genes with their paternal grandsire (orange chromosome pair), and 15.4 percent of their genes with their maternal grandsire (green chromosome pair).

EBV CALF = ½ EBV SIRE + ½ EBV DAM + mendelian sampling term
In a traditional, pedigree based genetic evaluation, there is no data available when an animal is born, so the Mendelian sampling term can not be estimated, and the animal’s EBV is reported as the parent average. This is often referred to as the ‘mid-parent’ EBV value.
Figure 2 Illustration of the use of genomic information to determine the shuffling of genes and chromosomes, and the subsequent relatedness between an animal and its paternal and maternal grand sire
Genomic relationships between 2,259 progeny of Angus sire, Millah Murrah Paratrooper P15, in the TransTasman Angus Cattle Evaluation. (Source: AGBU).
As performance data is subsequently collected on the animal, and the animal’s progeny, the mendelian sampling term can be estimated, and the animal’s EBV either increases, decreases or remains unchanged, reflecting the random sample of genes that the animal has inherited from its parents.
But this approach has limitations and it can be problematic collecting effective performance information on the animal to enable the mendelian sampling term to be estimated. For example, traits that are difficult or expensive to measure, traits that can’t be measured prior to the animal entering the breeding herd, traits that have a low heritability, or animals that are in small contemporary groups.
TALKING GENOMICS
Knowledge of the chromosomes that an animal has inherited via genomic testing, and the resultant ability to better estimate the mendelian sampling term, results in the availability of more accurate and reliable EBVs for animals.

Sydney Royal 2024
Venturon Livestock from Boyup Brook, Western Australia made it a show to remember after an epic trek across the country. The main Eyre Highway across the typically dry Nullarbor Plain was closed due to flooding after unseasonal heavy rainfall from northern cyclones. Luckily the road opened in time and the Thompson family were rewarded for the long journey.
Judge Matt Spry from Holbrook, NSW used their heifer Venturon Fiona T216 (P) as the junior champion heifer after winning the Heifer 18 to 20 months class. Sired by Ascot Ramrod R104E (P) this heifers dam had Perth Royal champions in her pedigree. Mr Spry commented “the junior heifer division was really strong with the heifers a consistent type and structurally very correct”. The junior champion heifer appealed when she came out in her class. He added “this heifer has depth of body a pleasing maturity pattern, overall length, balance and is going to make a great cow being widely sprung in the rib. She appeals as a clear winner”. Greg Nicolson was awarded second with his Silverstream Padra (P) daughter, Black Duck Trinity (P).
Venturon had three heifers in the Junior champion lineup winning the Heifer 9 -12 months with Venturon Under The Stars U102 (P) and Heifer 12 to 14 months with Venturon Reminisce U56 (P). Under The Stars U102 (P) was sired by Venturon Maximum Impact (P). The judge commented “leading the class is a heifer with plenty of power to her, she walks out structurally correct, I like the angle of her structure, her long body and capacity”. Second in this class was an entry exhibited by Youth Members, Alizah, Eleni and Thomas Fogden, Loxton SA with a Chenu Profile (P) daughter, Boulview Umarli (P).
Winner of the 12 to 14 months class, Venturon Reminisce U56 (P) was sired by the $52,000 Moongool Pilgrim (P). Mr Spry led his comments on this class with how strong the class was. “I believe the heifer in first is the most complete heifer and structurally sound, she flows as she walks and has the real depth of body that I look for”. Second in this class was Clarinda Duty Maid (P) exhibited by Golden Rose Charolais, Macorna, Victoria.
The interstate success continued with Vanessa Selleck, Victoria winning the Female 14 to 16 months. Her entry, Winkel Park Penny (P) is a daughter of Canadian sire SVY Trust 6H (P). This large framed heifer won her class at Melbourne Royal in 2023. Mr. Spry commented “this is a big powerful female with power, depth and softness. She is really good through the front end with plenty of weight for age”. Her maternal grandsire, Caloona Park Nugget (P) (R/F) was grand champion male and Hordern Trophy winner in 2019. Mr. Spry used this heifer as his Reserve Junior Champion Heifer. Greg and Jenny Frizell took second in the class with Wakefield Amaze 117 (P) sired by Silverstream Manhattan M171 (P).
Winchester Honor T9E (P) shown by the O’Brien Family won the Female 16 to 18 months class. Sired by LT Authority 7229 (P) this heifer comes from their French based Honor family. Matt Spry remarked on the importance of structural correctness in cattle at the start of his commentary on this class. He went on to say “the class winner flows as she walks and is really well balanced and moderate in her maturity pattern but still has extension and has excellent width from behind”. Venturon Miss Dimity T1229 (P) was second in this class. This heifer is sired by Venturon Ricky Bobby (P), the grand champion bull at Perth Royal in 2021.
Bureen Cattle Company from the Hunter Valley won the Female 19 to 20 months. Bureen Wendy (P) was sired by Minnie-Vale Quantong (P) from a DSK Wendy female. This well grown heifer placed over Myona Ginghi T22 (P) in second place. A daughter of Silverstream National N40 (P) this heifer was shown by breeders, Myona Charolais, Coonamble NSW.
The strength and depth in the junior heifer section were outstanding. Class after class highlighted the modern attributes of the Charolais breed with easy of fleshing whilst still maintaining the growth advantages the breed is renowned for. The junior champion female, Venturon Fiona T216 (P) was in the top three junior heifers in the Junior Heifer Interbreed.
The depth continued with the Senior female classes with an outstanding display of females. Returning from her 2023 Junior Champion Heifer success, Andrew, Anne and Harris Thompsons’ Venturon Starstruck 157S (P) won the Female 30 to 36 months class before being awarded the Senior Champion female. Sired by SCR Triumph 2135 (P) from the internationally renowned SVY Starstruck family this female paraded with a well grown heifer calf at foot. This female was also junior champion female in Adelaide in 2022.
Mr. Spry then used this female as senior and grand champion female before elevating her to Supreme Charolais Exhibit in the final decision of the day. He told the crowd “this is a really nice female, beautiful structurally correct female with a great maturity pattern. She has a good udder and teats, the do ability we seek in our females. She is balanced with softness, and doing a great job of the calf. This has been a fantastic line-up of cows, so structurally sound, displaying fertility traits and carcases”.
Second in this class was Winchester Daisy Duke S5E sired by WC Milestone 5223 (P) for Winchester Charolais. Winchester also won the Female 24 to 30 months class with Winchester Daisy Duke S10E (P).
This female sired by Venturon Maximum Impact (P) was then awarded Reserve Senior Champion female for Gavin and Kristie O’Brien. This female was the calf at foot when her dam, Winchester Daisy Duke N16E (P)was awarded the Interbreed Supreme Female at Sydney Royal in 2022 as well as Supreme Charolais Exhibit. Her grand dam Minnie Vale Quist Y3E was the Supreme Charolais Exhibit in 2006 highlighting the depth and quality in this female’s maternal pedigree. Matt Spry said “the reserve champion is a little more moderate, is doing a great job on her bull calf, beautiful udder, great teat placement, good angles and female that carries do ability and nice maturity pattern”.
Second in the Female 24 to 30 months was Winchester Miss Cooley S14 (P) exhibited by Youth member, Sophie Inder. This female paraded with a young calf at foot and is sired by Venturon Maximum Impact (P). This heifer was purchased for $14,000 after being awarded Reserve Junior Champion female at Sydney Royal in 2023. Chris and Ashleigh Ickinger won the 20 to 24 class with their Herlo Park Two Quarts sired by LT Ledger 0332 (P).
Another previous Sydney Royal Junior champion, Venturon Naughty But Nice S32 (P) returned with a calf at foot to win the Female over 36 months class. The junior champion female success with Venturon Fiona T216 (P) made a trifecta of junior champion heifers for Venturon with success in 2022, 2023 and 2024. Venturon Naughty But Nice S32 (P) was sired by Turnbull’s Duty Free and from their championship winning elite donor Venturon Naughty But Nice (P). This donor cow has been awarded show championships in three states and her progeny have achieved success.
The judges commented “the winning female in this class is a really nice female with great doing ability”. Second in the mature cow class was Caloona Park Louise R65 (P) (R/F) shown by the Franco Family. This large framed female paraded with well grown twin calves and is sired by Caloona Nike Air (P)(R/F).

From the Chair
A very successful start to 2024 for Charolais youth. It was great to see so many junior competitors across all the royal shows over the past few months and was especially great to see a large presence of Charolais youth members at Beef week in Rockhampton just a few weeks ago. A special congratulations to Gabriella, Alexander & Lachlan Stokes of Clearview Charolais for winning Grand Champion Charolais Female at Beef week.
We have been very fortunate enough to welcome Eleni Fogden into the Charolais youth committee from South Australia and we are very excited to have her come on board and look forward to working alongside Eleni. At Brisbane royal show later in the year we are all excited and looking forward to meeting the other Charolais youth international delegates from around the world during their visit to Australia. Their trip will kick off at Brisbane show and work their way through southern Queensland and northern New South Wales as they head towards Sydney on their trip exploring Australian Charolais. These international delegates will be at Brisbane show for a day or two so it will be a great opportunity for other Youth members to get to know them and build international relationships and contacts.
As 2024 continues its all-hands-on deck to plan and prepare for the 2024 Charolais youth show. We hope for it to be a great event and it will be catered for all ages. Palgrove Charolais have very kindly donated a heifer towards the youth show that will go home with one lucky competitor. We would like to Thank Ben and Gemma Noller and the whole team at Palgrove for this very Generous Donation. The youth show will be held in Inverell on the 4th to the 6th of October and we look forward to seeing everyone there.
Youth Committee Chairperson Josh Fenech
Palgrove Support Youth Show
The Youth stampede is back after 5 years and this year is taking place at the Inverell Showgrounds on the October long weekend the 4-6th. The stampede is open for all youth members aged 7-25 on the 1st October 2024 and will consist of educational sessions with industry relevant speakers as well as junior judging and paraders. Entrants are required to be a Youth member of the Charolais Society and parade an animal that is at least 50% Charolais. The event will have a strong focus on developing personal skills of participants. There are many skills youth can develop form attending these events.
Palgrove Pastoral will be donating a special female to a fortunate youth member. General Manager at Palgrove Pastoral, Ben Noller explained that “youth are important to the breed, they are our future and we want to encourage more youth to select Charolais. I was involved in the youth growing up and felt it was right to give back to the next generation. We want to donate this female to a young Charolais youth member to support them in growing their herd.” The heifer will be awarded to the most potential breeder which will be appraised under a selection criteria.
This is an amazing opportunity for a youth member to kick start their herd. A Palgrove heifer recently sold for $24,000 at eight months at the National sale indicating the high regard the Palgrove program is held in.
Entries for the 2024 Youth Stampede open the 1st of July 2024. All Charolais Society members will be sent entry forms directly and they will be available on the website.

Senior & Grand Champion Charolais Female
Youth Members Stoked to win Champion
Charolais judging at Beef Australia will live long in the memory of the Stokes family. The emotion associated with success was plain to see on handler Gabby Stokes face when their female Clearview Raine achieved judging success.
Youth members Gabriella, Alexander and Lachlan Stokes of Clearview Charolais won the Grand Champion Charolais female at Rockhampton Beef 2024. Traveling 700km with five head it was the first time the family had exhibited at Rockhampton BEEF Week. Gabby Stokes is a young Charolais enthusiast who started breeding Charolais in 2020 and is currently studying a Bachelor of Agriculture Science majoring in animal since at the University of Gatton QLD. Her family have always had commercial cows and used a Charolais bull as a terminal sire, but it was at her high school West Moreton Anglican College where her real love for the breed began. Showing Charolais at the school allowed Gabby to experience the breed and 2019 she had the opportunity to buy her first females from Trevlac Charolais.
West Moreton Anglican College is a great supporter of the Charolais breed and run their own herd under the West Mac prefix. Students are seen at many events with their show team and cattle for other herds.
Exhibiting at many local shows in the Mount Walker area and Brisbane Royal each year, Gabby decided to make the trip to Rockhampton BEEF this year as an opportunity to get their stud name out within the northern area and use that opportunity network with other breeders.
Charolais judging at Beef Australia under Judge Peter Collins and associate Jaime Vosper brought great shock to Gabby and her family when Clearview Raine was Awarded Grand Champion Charolais cow. Gabby said “I only came up her for the experience, I did not expect to do so well. I couldn’t be prouder of my whole team and it has definitely taken some time to set in that Raine was award Champion Charolais Female.”
Judge Peter Collins was full of praise for his senior females “The thing that pleases me today is how similar they all are,” he said. “Functional females have that smoothness of shoulder, and then they’ve got that A shape. They’re beautiful through the front end but they’re wide through the back end. They’ve got great udder setups, good on their feet and legs. “We are so pleased that we have animals of this calibre to be judged.”
Raine is the first female registered in the Clearview prefix and is sired by the highly regarded Palgrove Justice sire. The Stokes family registered four calves born in 2020, the year Clearview Raine was born.
Clearview also won the Dams Progeny Stakes with calves produced from Palgrove Flaxen M35E making Beef Australia even more memorable for the Stokes Family. Gabby was also awarded Reserve Champion Parader during the dinner that night for her efforts in the ring.
Last year at the Brisbane Royal, Clearview won the first two heifer classes with daughters of Brendale Ridley with Clearview Actress 4 awarded the Reserve Junior Champion Heifer. Clearview also won the Sires Progeny Class.
Gabbie’s future goals for her stud are to continue producing quality cattle and to bring in some new genetic lines to her herd. Gabbie’s advice to other youth members is, “it isn’t always easy and you have to stick with it to get the results. Don’t be afraid to talk or ask other Charolais breeders for opinion’s, it will help you grow”.
Charolais Youth Membership is available to Youth aged up to 25 years of age with an interest in the Charolais breed and offers discounted costs for registration of animals.
Youth Australia
Australia Hosts International Youth
Commencing at the Brisbane Royal, the Charolais Society of Australia will host a delegation of international Charolais youth. Charolais Charbray International commenced this youth exchange program back in 2018 with Canada hosting the first two events. Designed to foster international networking in our international youth, the program has been very successful. Charolais Charbray International have made a considerable investment in this program to encourage participation from member organisations.
Australian youth members, Heidi Nicholls and Sarah Nesbitt attended these events in Canada in 2018 & 2019. In 2022 Amanda Cavenagh attended the event hosted by the American International Charolais Association in the US. The feedback from these three scholarship winners was extremely supportive of the networking and personal development that they had the opportunity to partake in.
Amanda summed up her trip “a huge thank you to both the Charolais Society of Australia and to the American International Charolais Association for allowing me the most amazing opportunity and for putting on such a valuable and knowledgeable program. I learned an amazing amount from
a range of agricultural professionals and businesses and would like to thank all who gave up their time in sharing this knowledge. I absolutely loved my time in the United States and cannot wait to return and visit all the amazing friends I made along the way!”
To date we have confirmation of delegates from Estonia, United Kingdom, Canada, United States and New Zealand. After the Brisbane Royal the group will tour out to Roma before heading down to Armidale. The tour will take in Charolais herds, some tourism and a sale at the Roma Selling Complex. Some educational sessions will be held in Armidale utilising the University of New England (UNE) and industry knowledge available.
From Armidale the group will travel to Sydney to experience the city and its many attractions before heading back to their home countries.
We encourage our youth members to apply for the 2025 scholarship, it really is an amazing opportunity. Once the host country releases their dates and information we will advise all members.
Charolais Membership Honoured
The Covid pandemic delayed the ability of the Charolais family to celebrate our Australian fifty year achievements in a timely manner but they were never forgotten.
The Charolais Society is recognising members who have maintained long term continuous full membership. At thirty and fifty years membership, herds will be recognised formally by the society for that achievement.
The National Dinner held at Callaghan Park, Rockhampton during Beef Australia offered a perfect opportunity to recognise long standing contributors to the Charolais breed. In front of an 150 strong crowd of Charolais family, President David Whitechurch had the honour to recognise our early adopters. Slightly delayed due to the Covid situation the awards for fifty year continuous full membership were presented to Palgrove, Gunnadoo, Rosedale and Allednaw Charolais herds. Over the course of their history these four herds have registered collectively just under 35,000 Charolais calves. It should also be recognised that many of the members being recognised for their long term commitment to the breed have gone beyond their front gate and have served the Society in many roles.
The Charolais breed owes an enormous level of gratitude to these herds and the many others that recognised what this breed could offer and played a vital part of bringing that knowledge to the general population. The fifty year time frame has seen many ebbs and flows in demand and at times it may have seemed like a thankless task. Many members have made significant personal contributions to ensure the success of the breed and the society and the standing of our breed in the industry today reflects that.
As a Society we are grateful for their dedication, persistence and desire to promote this wonderful breed. It is fitting our early breeders have the opportunity to reflect on what a success and integral component the Charolais breed has become in the Australian beef industry. For a breed to succeed it must have attributes relevant to the commercial industry which the Charolais does, but also have members prepared to advocate and promote those advantages to the wider industry.
The society also took the opportunity to present thirty year recognition certificates to Veejay Downs, Mountview and Venturon Charolais who were in attendance at the dinner.
It was pleasing to see the multi generation influence the breed now enjoys with children and grandchildren of early breeders accepting the recognition awards.
Presentations were made to qualifying members in Western Australia on the 1st June at a regional WA meeting. Bruce Campbell and David Ellis were on hand to accept their 50 year recognition awards . Bardoo, Liberty, Blaweary and Wundam Glen herds were presented with their 30 year certificates. The Society will continue to reward the long standing membership achievements as opportunities arise at Charolais Society functions.

TALKING GENOMICS
Andrew Byrne
How Are
Genomic selection in seedstock animals most commonly involves the inclusion of genomic profiles in existing industry genetic evaluations, such as those conducted by BREEDPLAN and Sheep Genetics, to calculate genomically enhanced breeding values.
Genomically enhanced breeding values enable more accurate selection decisions, earlier in an animal’s life, and for additional traits and animals, and ultimately, greater genetic improvement. This article discusses how genomic information is incorporated in the calculation of genomically enhanced breeding values within the BREEDPLAN and Sheep Genetics genetic evaluations.
SINGLE STEP GENETIC EVALUATION
The manner in which genomic information is included in industry genetic evaluations is often referred to as a ‘singlestep’ genetic evaluation, reflecting that genomic profiles are analysed simultaneously with other sources of information (e.g. pedigree, phenotypes), placing appropriate emphasis on all available sources of information, to calculate a Single, genomically enhanced breeding value.
ANALYTICAL APPROACHES FOR INCORPORATING GENOMIC INFORMATION
There are a number of different analytical approaches for incorporating genomic information in the calculation of breeding values within a single-step genetic evaluation.
The BREEDPLAN and Sheep Genetics Evaluation utilise a ‘relationship’ approach known as GTBLUP. In the relationship approach, the incorporation of genomics is about ‘animal relationships’.
In a simplistic form, a breeding value is calculated by a) estimating the relationship between an animal and the other animals in the genetic evaluation, and b) using the performance information that has been collected for the animal and the animals to which it is related to predict an animal’s breeding value.
The more closely an animal with a phenotype is related to the target animal whose breeding value is of interest, the more influence that its performance has on the breeding value being calculated. In traditional, pedigree based genetic evaluation, the relationships between animals are determined by pedigree alone. (Figure 2)
Figure 2. Example of relationships between animals in a traditional genetic evaluation. Based on pedigree relationships, the animal is estimated to have 50% of genes in common with each parent, 25% of genes in common with each grand-parent, and 25% of genes in common with each of its half siblings.
In a genetic evaluation that incorporates genomics using the ‘relationship’ approach, the relationships between animals are determined by combining pedigree and genomic information. Utilisation of genomic relationships, being the genetic relatedness between two animals based on their genomic profiles, improves estimation of the relationship between animals in the genetic evaluation, and ultimately results in the calculation of more reliable breeding values.
How are Genomically Enhanced Breeding Values Calculated?
...cont from page 43
Genomic relationships enable:
• the relationship between animals to be estimated when no, or incomplete pedigree information is available;
• a more precise estimate to be made of the genetic relationship between two animals who are related by pedigree. i.e. rather than assuming an animal has 25 percent of its genes in common with each grand parent (based on the law of averages), genomics assesses the random shuffle of chromosomes the animal has inherited to provide a more precise indication of the proportion of genes that an animal has in common with each relative;
• the relationship between animals unrelated by pedigree to be determined, and any performance information that is available on these animals to be used in the calculation of the animal’s breeding value. e.g. pedigree may indicate that two animals are unrelated, but in reality, genomics indicates that they share a proportion of genes in common. This is particularly advantageous as it allows the performance information of animals in the genomic reference population to be utilised in the calculation of an animal’s breeding value.
3. Example of relationships between animals in a single step genetic evaluation. Utilisation of genomic relationships enables a more precise estimate to be made of the relationship to each animal in the pedigree, while also enabling the relationship to be estimated to animals in the genomic reference population.
Genomic Relationships in Practice
The real-world examples below demonstrate how utilisation of genomic relationships improves the estimation of the relationship between animals in a single step genetic evaluation.

their offspring. Similarly, the sire’s offspring would each be expected to have a relationship of 0.25 with one another.
Genomic testing reveals that while, on average, these relationships are correct, the relationship between the sire and each individual offspring differs, and some offspring are more closely related to each other than they are with others.

Feedlot Trial Commenced
The Charolais Feedlot and Carcase competition organised by the Queensland Region has commenced for 2024. Now in the fourth year this event has attracted a strong entry. This competition is offering over $10,000 in prizemoney to attract the best.
Another cohort of Charolais steers and heifers has entered the Freestone Feedlot at Warwick Queensland for the 2024 Feedlot and Carcase competition. Twenty entrants have entered 291 head for this year’s event. Nine of these are first time entrants including six from New South Wales. This competition over the four years has seen over 800 head processed and data collected.
Performance on feed for a 100-day period simulating industry standard feeding regimes is calculated before processing the animals. All carcases are then evaluated on the Meat Standards Australia (MSA) scoring system. Cattle entering the competition are valued based on ruling market prices on the day of entry and a $ value gain is calculated from the carcase value.
Every animal entered is photographed and a comprehensive booklet of data is provided back to entrants. The awards this year will be presented at a dinner in Toowoomba on the evening of the 19th October 2024. Details of this evening will be forwarded to entrants and northern members later in the year.
The continued support of the Freestone Feedlot and the team at Bartholomew and Co, Beaudesert ensures this competition runs smoothly. Trial coordinator, Brendan Scheiwe commented “this competition gives feedback to our entrants as well as generating a database of carcase data for the breed. Open to cattle with at least 50% Charolais genetics the results are proving invaluable in generating a snapshot of how Charolais cross cattle from a variety of crosses are performing in real world feeding conditions”.
Cattle entered the feedlot in late April for a backgrounding period before the weight phase of the competition began. This allows a level playing field giving time for the animals to adjust after transportation to the feedlot. Cattle this year have come from Emerald in the north to Coonabarabran in the South and out to Roma in the west with a variety of crossbreeding programs represented.
We look forward to watching the progress of these cattle through the competition and a full report will be in the January 2025 Charolais magazine.
From the Archives - 1984’s
“the message has stood the test of time and still rings true”
President’s Report, Mr John Sullivan
May 1984 Magazine
Ladies and Gentlemen, It is my privilege and pleasure to present this report for 1983. The year began with the disastrous drought of the previous few years reaching its peak, and the horrific bush fires in Victoria and South Australia. This was followed by the gradual breaking of the drought beginning with widespread rain during the period of the 1983 Charolais National Convention at Bendigo in March. Most parts of Australia have enjoyed one of the best seasons on record since last June, however it takes more than one good season to recover from prolonged drought.
The Victorian Regional Committee organised the 1983 Annual General Meeting, Seminar, Show and Sale at Bendigo, and are to be congratulated on their initiative and organising ability. It is hoped that the Bendigo and Toowoomba Conventions are the first of many Annual Charolais Conventions to be held in all States.
Charolais Stud and Fat Cattle scored major show wins again in 1983, the outstanding being the Hordern Trophy and the Stan Hill Trophy double and at Sydney Show. Charolais also won Carcass, Fat Cattle or Interbreed Championships at the National Steer Show, Adelaide, Launceston and Brisbane Royal Shows, the Queensland Fat Cattle Championships, as well as numerous country shows.
Since the improvement in seasonal conditions there has been an increased demand for Charolais cattle by Commercial Cattlemen. Charolais bulls and females sold at Auction in recent months have met spirited bidding and sold at increased prices. Regional Society Sponsored Sales have been held or are planned in Victoria, Tasmania and Queensland, South Australian members have been successful marketing Charolais bulls in the Northern Territory and recently a draft of 36 bulls were sent to a commercial cattleman. Charolais bulls from the 1983 West Australian Bull Trial will be sold next week. There have been many private sales of Charolais bulls in New South Wales following the recent success of the breed at Country Shows.
We cannot be complacent until the Charolais breed is accepted and used by a much larger proportion, of commercial beef producers. Members can help promote the breed and their future destiny by marketing top quality Charolais at Auction Sales, and entering Fat Cattle, Carcass and Stud Shows.
We should keep in mind the acceptance of Charolais in North America and the United Kingdom. Over 60% of the bulls used in the Suckler cow herds in the U.K. in 1982 were Charolais, (British Meat and Livestock Commission figures) compared with 35% in 1981 and 11% in 1980. In 1983 Charolais was the only breed to increased numbers of bulls and maintain auction sale prices despite the severe reduction in breeding cow numbers in the U.K.
Competent cattlemen in these countries are making use of Charolais to increase the efficiency of beef production. Perhaps the time is not far off when beef producers in Australia are forced to recognise the potential of Charolais to increase efficiency in the production of beef in our own country.
Federal Council has implemented for 1984 the Promotion plan of Mr. John Kane. The first part of the plan involves the subsidy by the Charolais Society of Australia of group advertising in feature pages in the Rural Press, organised by the Regions. The Society wants to help those who are prepared to help themselves. It is hoped finance will be available to assist the Regions to run Field Days in 1984.
The winner of the 1983 King Gee Promoter of the Year Competition will be announced tonight at the Convention Dinner. I would like to take this opportunity to express appreciation to the Management of King Gee for their continued sponsorship of this activity, also to Smith Kline for their Valbazen Awards to the State Winners in this Competition. I am pleased to announce that King Gee will again sponsor this Competition in 1984. It is envisaged that the Competition will take a new format this year giving more publicity to Charolais and to King Gee through Regional Field Days, thereby involving more Society members and commercial cattlemen.
An interesting although at times frustrating aspect of Society activities has been the export of live Charolais cattle to South Korea. The Korean N.L.C.F.called tenders for 26,929 Charolais heifers and 1710 Charolais weaner bulls during 1983. Some of these tenders were won by Australian Exporters and returned satisfactory prices to many of our members, due in no small way to the efforts of the Marketing Sub-Committee of Council, led by Mrs. Diane Findlay. I would like to thank Diane for the considerable time, effort and expense she devoted to developing this market. I visited Korea last September following an inquiry for 2000 Charolais Bulls received through the A.M.L.C. A detailed report was published in the February Australian Charolais News.
Des Noller, “Gunnadoo”, Oakey, was invited to attend the 1983 Canadian Western Agribition at Regina, Saskatchewan in November-December, I had the honour of representing the Society at the 19th World Charolais Congress at Vichy, France, in September.
The Council of the Society met on three occasions during 1983, and many important aspects of Society business were dealt with. Councillors were conscious of the difficult financial situation of many members following the drought and were reluctant to increase Society fees. I would like to thank Councillors for their contribution in discussion, time and personal cost,
It is with regret that I report that our immediate Past President, Mr. David Dixon, had decided to retire from Council after 13 years continuous devoted service, including 2 years as President. I would like to express our appreciation to David for his untiring efforts for the Society and its members. David has accepted Chairmanship of the Committee organising the 1985 Charolais National Convention in Tasmania. Diane Findlay, Bruce Kerswell, Doug Salier and Rob Binny have also retired from Council and I thank them for their work on behalf of the Society and its members
I have enjoyed working with our Secretary, Mr. Bruce Richards, and Registrar, Mrs. Glenys Walsh during the past 12 months and, thanks to them, now have a better knowledge of the day to day running of the Society. Due to the reduction in staff, Bruce and Glenys have carried a heavy workload, often far in excess of what would be considered normal duties. For this I express gratitude and appreciation on my own behalf and of Society members. Bruce has had the responsibility of producing the Australian Charolais News and I congratulate him on the excellent Newsletter which receives favourable comment from many non members. The assistance of Doug Salier in getting new advertising support for the Newsletter was much appreciated.
The Financial affairs of the Society have continued under the expert guidance of our Honorary Treasurer Mr. Harry Wadds. The first few months of 1983 was a most difficult time financially because of drought and Council took the only responsible course open to it and budgeted to reduce expenditure, including Regional Grants. Harry has guided the Society financially through the recent years of drought and I have no doubt the Society will emerge in a very healthy financial position due to his expertise.
Harry’s ability to give sound advice to Council is of paramount importance and I express appreciation on behalf of all members. In conclusion I would like to say thanks to my wife Lenore and family for their support and tolerance during my 13 months as President. John Sullivan.
