The National Sale

It is with great pleasure I write this sale forward. Charolais semen became commercially available 55 years ago in 1969 starting a significant influence on Australian beef herds. For the first time Australian cattle breeders had access to genetics offering tremendous growth and muscle capabilities and less waste than the breeds then available. As the first European breed to enter Australia, Charolais had to forge their own destiny and I am happy to report, our breeders did a great job. Charolais today are the leading European breed based on registration and number of sires sold at auction data.

The breed had an insatiable demand in the early days with the first Australian Charolais sale held at Mandalong Park, St Marys on the 6th June 1970. More than 1,000 people attended this sale with the top price $6,000 for Centrewood Babiller (imp NZ), a half-bred female.

In 1993 the inaugural Charolais National Sale at Dubbo launched and this ran at Dubbo till 1997 when the sale relocated to Tamworth. The sale operated from several locations in Tamworth for many years, before ceasing due to the increasing number of on property sales in the breed. In 2014 the sale relaunched back at Dubbo and ran through to 2019 in a successful format. The pandemic in 2020 once again saw the National hibernate. The Covid era also confirmed that with the use of technology, successful sales can be conducted outside traditional frameworks.

Beef Australia was the logical location to relaunch a new National Sale format. Breeders now are no longer required to display sale cattle at the venue. This approach was twofold, one, that this truly allowed a National Sale with distanced members not required to transport prior to sale, and secondly to encourage herds that no longer show cattle to participate. This catalogue is a testament to this with many lots still on farm, but one of the most exciting genetic line ups we have seen in a Charolais catalogue. Our vendors have dup deep into their keeper pens and catalogued an outstanding selection of Charolais genetic opportunities. We thank the vendors for taking this new format on board with the depth on offer and look forward to continued success for the Charolais breed.

Sale Information

The Charolais Society of Australia is hosting a premier Charolais sale during Beef Australia on Wednesday 8th May 2024. The sale will be held in conjunction with a dinner in Rockhampton. The dinner will celebrate 55 years of Charolais genetics in Australia and the impact of the breed on the Australian beef industry. Beef Australia is the perfect venue to do this.

All lots are sold at the fall of the hammer when full payment is due and payable. If the lot involves a pick, the selection of the animal must be completed at the fall of the hammer.

Fertility Guarantee

a. Bulls are to be sold as fertile and capable of natural service. The Purchaser will have the right of cancelling the sale within six months of the date of the Sale if they can submit a Veterinary Report stating that the bull is infertile or incapable of natural service. The Veterinary Surgeon must state that, in their opinion, the bull has not suffered, since the delivery to the Purchaser, any injury or maltreatment which could have affected its breeding ability. The Vendor is liable to refund the purchase price of the animal in full.

b. All female animals are to be sold as guaranteed breeders. Females twenty-four (24) months and over are to be pregnancy tested in calf, or have a calf at foot. Vendors must supply a PTIC certificate for every female entered in the catalogues as PTIC. Females under 24 months may be entered as mated or unjoined.

c. Where the lot is a female between the age of twelve (12) to twenty four (24) months, and a Purchaser submits a Veterinary Certificate to a Vendor within twelve (12) months of the date of sale stating that a female is infertile, and in the Veterinary Surgeon’s opinion, she has not suffered since the delivery to the Purchaser, any injury or maltreatment which could have affected its breeding ability, the Vendor is liable to refund the purchase price of the animal in full. This will not apply where an attempt has been made to transfer embryos/IVF from the female.

d. Where the lot, is an unjoined heifer under twelve months (12) of age, the purchaser has up to the date the animal is twenty four (24) months to submit a Veterinary Certificate to a Vendor that the female of joinable age is infertile, and in the Veterinary Surgeon’s opinion, she has not suffered since the delivery to the Purchaser, any injury or maltreatment which could have affected its breeding ability, the Vendor is liable to refund the purchase price of the animal in full. This will not apply where an attempt has been made to transfer embryos/ IVF from the female.

e. In this sale, a bull or a female resulting from a pick is the same as a bull or female offered live and is subject to the above guarentees.

Inspection

Lots: 5, 6 and 8 will be present at Beef Australia for inspection

Lots: 1, 2, 3, 4,and 7 can be inspected prior to sale by contacting the vendor for pre sale inspection. No cattle will be on site at the sale venue.

Delivery

Cattle onsite at Beef Australia will be available for delivery at the conclusion of the cattle exhibition. Purchasers are encouraged to dicuss transport arrangements with vendors after the sale. Live lots not onsite at Beef Australia will be available for delivery from the vendors property. All delivery instructions are to be given to the the agents in writing.

Transfer Fees

Transfer fees will be the responsibility of the Vendor in accordance with Charolais Society of Australia Ltd Regulations.

BREEDPLAN

All published Breedplan performance traits shall be reported in the sale catalogue.

Health.

To be eligible for entry, cattle must originate from:

a. A herd with a minimum J-BAS score of 6

b. Each animal must belong in a herd accredited free or confirmed free of both Brucellosis and TB.

Genomic Test Results

Genomic test results listed in this catalogue have been supplied by the vendor from results supplied by testing faciliites. Intending purchasers should consult with vendors to determine the test used and the suitability of the result for their own breeding program. The Charolais Society cannot bear direct liability or any consequential losses incurred by the purchaser should the test results supplied be deemed to be incorrect

Conditions of sale for Interstate Purchasers

a. Any animal, purchased for interstate movement, which requires further tests will be forwarded to an approved Quarantine area where appropriate tests will be carried out in compliance with the entry requirements into the destination state. The costs of agistment, transport and health tests are to be borne by the Purchaser of all cattle passing such tests, or by the Vendor should they fail to pass such tests. Payment for cattle to the Vendor will be made within the normal terms of sale whether or not the cattle have been tested for entry into the nominated state.

b. In the event of the cattle failing health tests and sale being cancelled, the Vendor will refund all monies, paid as settlement, for the Purchaser.

Graham and Katrina Blanch commenced Charnelle Charolais in 1992 with females from Trevlac and Tallegalla. Females have been added from Palgrove, Moongool, Fernvale and others have been added throughout the studs 32-year history. Embryo transfer and Artificial Insemination have always been a large part of our breeding program, successfully introducing new genetics into our herd. Charnelle has selected genetic globally and marketed semen from eight sires including JWX Silver Bullet and G Bros Thin Red Line from Canada in 2010. In 2013 we selected DÁngely and Gallway (both Polled Full French) from France and in 2016, Elder’s Blackjack and CML Distinction from Canada. Then in 2018, Johnny & Nougat (both polled Full French). We are very satisfied with the influence these bulls have had, not only in our breeding program but in herds right across Australia. It was very satisfying that Elder’s Blackjack from Canada, whom we selected for use in Australia, was voted World Champion Charolais Bull in 2020.

We have also imported embryos from the USA and France to enhance our breeding program. Embryos imported in 2008 from Camp Cooley USA resulted in two very influential females in our herd, Elle E10E & Emma E50E (both by RC Charlie). These females became donor dams in our herd with excellent EBV’s, temperament, structure and Homozygous Polled. Elle E10E produced Charnelle Panama P25E by Blackjack. One of our greatest achievements has been to market Charnelle Panama semen to Ireland, UK, New Zealand, South Africa, Norway and Germany, with calves by him already in Ireland, South Africa and New Zealand. Our herd comprises about 70 females and we sell about 25 bulls a year with our main bull sale being at the Coolabunia Classic Charolais Bull sale in August. The Annual Charnelle Charolais Invitational Female and Genetics sale has been held at Toowoomba on the first Saturday in March for the last 14 years.

We are very pleased to offer at this sale the right to flush the pick of our herd to the sire of your choice. Details of some of the options include.

A: Charnelle Elegance 6 GKA H45E: Elegance 6 is really from the pinnacle of our herd with terrific structure, length, udder, milk and volume with softness. She has plenty of French in her with Pinay featured in both sides of her pedigree. Sons have sold to $20,000 and a daughter to $14,000. BPA results pending.

B: Charnelle Elle 5 (P) GKA N12E: This Pinay daughter has already made her mark with her first son by Elder’s Blackjack selling for $20,000. Check out her Padra daughter at Beef Australia…. she is pretty special. N12E is a maternal half-sister to Panama & Louis out of Elle E10E imported from the USA as an embryo. N12E has really top figures for BW, GL, Growth, Milk, EMA, IMF% and top 6% for Domestic Index. Flushed twice for 19 x A, and 3 x B grade embryos. Available to flush this summer. BPA Free.

C: Charnelle Emma 4 (P) GKA R1E: Another Pinay daughter out of Emma E50E who was also imported from the USA as an embryo. Emma 4 has a tremendous set of figures with 11 traits in the top 11%, including top 5% rankings for Calving Ease (Dtr), short gestation length, 400 & 600 day-growth, EMA and Domestic Terminal index. Her only flush to Blackjack yielded 10 x A & 2 x B grade embryos. Open ready to flush and is BPA Free.

D: Challambi Estella (PP)(R/F) CHA S42E: Estella S42 is the latest to be added to our donor group and gives you a Homozygous Polled Red Factor option. She is a very neat and correct young female that took our eye as the pick female from the 2023 Charnelle Female sale. She is currently doing a great job rearing twins with perfect udder and teat structure. We visited the Challambi herd in 2022 and were very impressed with Nigel’s cattle & the Estella females are always a standout. She has been flushed once for 9 x A & 2 x B grade embryos. We’re extremely excited and proud to be a part of the National Charolais Sale, offering what we believe is an extremely unique package of embryos. In 2011 we founded our stud ‘Warilla Charolais’ off our long-term passion of breeding quality commercial Charolais cattle. We purchased our founding females from the Boongatti Dispersal Sale as well as Palgrove, from those initial purchases we further seeked to source quality females from leading studs here in Australia & New Zealand to further bolster our studs genetic pool. In recent years we have sourced some outstanding donor females, ultimately increasing our embryo transfer programs.

The embryo’s that we are proud to offer in the Charolais National Sale are out of what we consider, our best donor female. We purchased Charnelle Elegance 16 out of the 2020 Charnelle Invitation Female Sale for $14,000.

Elegance 16 has already given us some outstanding progeny, sired by LT Wyoming Wind, Elder’s Blackjack & Silverstream National. This female is an incredibly broody Charolais female, with great hip, udder, structure and a very docile temperament. Paired with the extremely impressive homozygous polled $100,000 sire in Palgrove Rockerfella, we believe this will be a mating that will result in outstanding progeny.

When we successfully secured the five straw package in the Charolais Youth Sale later last year we immediately knew we’d flush Elegance 16 to Rockerfella. With the flush a success, we implanted ten embryos ourselves, which has resulted in ten successful pregnancies. We now offer other breeders the opportunity to use these genetics. We thank the Charolais Society for organising such a prestigious sale, that allows us to showcase these leading genetics to the wider Charolais community.

Bauhinia Park Charolais stud was founded by Jeff and Raelea Holzwart in the mid 90’s commencing with around 40 cows. Since then with some more industry relevant female purchases and the careful selection of high class Charolais sires, the stud has grown to where we are now joining 200 top quality females with the resulting young sires sold each year at our Annual Bull Sale and in the paddock.

Located just 30km East of Emerald in Central Queensland, the majority of the Charolais herd are run on our property ‘Kensington’. Ryan & Rachel Holzwart are now based at ‘Kensington’ and have taken the reigns of the Charolais stud herd. Jeff and Raelea are still involved & love their cattle. They live nearby on ‘Grandridge’ where they enjoy the running of their Angus stud herd.

Bauhinia Park has earnt a strong foothold supplying bulls throughout Central and Western Queensland. It is our commitment to breeding functional Charolais cattle with plenty of bone, natural muscle, constitution, fertility, and ability to finish easily, which we feel helps keep us in good stead against our peers.

The past few years has seen the purchase of some more very exciting sires that are performing extremely well for us. Bulls like Lastovski, Mario, Q-Pac and then more recent Spalding & Start the Party just to name a few. We also have semen interest in some modern, high selling AI sires in Ascot Recharge and Namesake. We feel all of these sire’s have contributed significantly to the stud herd and we’re very confident in where they will take us in the coming years.

T22E has been a standout since birth, she is extremely long bodied, clean made and has always been one of the first to catch your eye in the paddock. We purchased a few straws in Namesake after watching him sell in 2019, we were totally in awe of his powerful phenotype and loved how he moved around the ring. On the dam’s side she stems from the original donor cow Charnelle Katrina H65E, who we also purchased as the high selling female from the Blanch family in 2019.

T100E was a bit young to join in the Spring so we have chosen to leave her open, allowing the opportunity for the purchaser to join to the bull or their choice, or slot her straight into an ET program.

From a family of Champions

4 Ways Charolais was registered with the society in 2004 after breeding commercial Charolais cattle since 1985. Originally, we were located at Young, South West New South Wales operating a broadacre cropping program and purchasing a few registered females as the budget allowed. After a few years the opportunity to purchase the majority of females from another breeder turned our hobby into a viable stud operation. The stud has pursued the best genetics available including the record priced sires, Moongool Lunar Rise (P) $83,000 and Moongool Revolution (P) $265,000.

Refine’s pedigree is the most influential in the 4 Ways herd. Amongst her pedigree, two full natural siblings having won at BEEF Australia and the Brisbane Royal show. In 2021, 4 Ways Quantum was awarded Grand Champion Charolais Male at Beef Australia and then sold to Mac and Gayle Shann of Cantaur Park for $40,000. In 2023, 4 Ways Refine R32E was appointed Grand Champion Charolais Female at the EKKA. She was then entered into the Charolais International Vitual Show and was granted Grand Champion Female.

In 2008 the stud was relocated to Guyra in the New England region of NSW to concentrate on our stud operation. The following year we were given the opportunity to sell bulls at Clermont Central QLD with another breeder for which we are so grateful to those breeders for that. Following this bulls were sold at Emerald Aggrow and a small sale we had at Armidale NSW.

Refine is the first registered female to be offered by her sire Moongool Lunar Rise who was purchased by 4 Ways in 2017 for $83,000 which at the time was the Australian record for a Charolais Bull. Lunar Rise’s pedigree consists of leading Charolais sires such as Silverstream Evolution, Minnie-vale Sundance and Moongool Simon. We admired Lunar for his smooth muscle pattern and great skin type with his progeny being sort after by stud and commercial cattlemen. Amongst Lunar’s son’s is 4 Ways Revolution our top price bull selling to Kelly and Barry Shann in 2022 for $65,000.

Refines dam also has plenty to impress in her pedigree, tracing back to the impressive Palgrove Refine family with Platinum Windfall, Palgrove Viagra and Moongool Fairfax, who was the junior champion Charolais bull at EKKA 2012. Veejay downs was started in 1987 by Henry and Verona Pisaturo in 2008 it was passed to James Pisaturo and with the purchase of some heifers from Mandalong it was reestablished, these females were closely linked to Nandillyan Peugeot and created a strong base. Bulls from Rosedale and DSK were utilized. In 2015 the herd was moved to ‘Inga Downs’ southeast of Middlemount in Central Queensland. Since then, all Veejay Downs progeny have been bred at ‘Inga Downs’. It is currently owned and operated by James, Aleisha, Olivia and George Pisaturo.

Our operation focuses on breeding bulls for our own commercial program and has given us the ability to ensure our bulls thrive in the central Queensland environment. As all commercial bulls prepared for our own use are in the same management group as our sale teams we ensure our bulls are prepared to survive. The CQ Premier Charolais Sale is the only place we offer bulls for auction. We have recently expanded the operation to provide a line of paddock bulls to our clients.

Our program is a control mated with all cows calving from late spring to early summer in one management group to suit our wet season. All cows that fail to rebreed are culled to ensure selection pressure with our cows run under the same management as our commercial herd. We are BREEDPLAN recorded with all progeny remaining in the herd until 400 Day scans and the Charolais Bundle are done on all calves to include genomics and are very close to full parent verification to ensure the accuracy of the information provided.

Our Cattle have been validated by our success in the Clermont Cattleman’s Challenge with our home bred Charolais sired steers winning 3 years in a row. This competition starts with steers being backgrounded for 250 days in the same paddock then fed for 100 days on grain. There is a weight gain, carcase and taste test aspects to this competition making it a very comprehensive paddock to plate.

Our offering in this sale, “The pick of our two most elite young females” is a celebration in our 50th year of the Legacy of Robert and Georgina Binny and the quality of stud females they built from modest resources and land base With limited data available to all breeders in those times, with only a vision and simple commonsense selection, planned mating’s, strict culling and strategic purchasing to produces females that takes any breeding program forward. Glenlea Charolais was established in 1973 by Robert and Georgina Binny in Tasmania with first progeny registered in 1974, 50 years of continuous registered Charolais seedstock production in 2024! Our policy is to take our bulls to our Qld clients, either at our sales or from the paddock direct, adaptability is excellent with repeat buyers from across Northern and central QLD. We sell bulls all year round out of the paddock and offer free delivery to all major centers with our paddock bull sales. We will offer for sale close to 300 bulls in 2024.

Charol 147th is from the same management group as Nolana 153rd, born unassisted from a 1st calving Dam, she is so square on her feet and legs, perfect structure, extra overall carcass yield, with ideal fat cover for a 12 month old heifer. Neither of these two heifers have been hard fed for show presentation, supplemented in the paddock with limited heifer developer pellets only. Charol’s cow family is another of Glenlea’s most prolific, again with over 40 years of Champions, high sellers and EBV trait leaders. The overall phenotype to expect of Charol 147th as a mature female is evident in L21 (see photo on previous page). Charol is sired by SCX JEHU, she is one of a consistent line of this sire’s progeny, his impact will be a big one on the Australian Charolais scene, We have many progeny that are just outstanding in phenotype and performance. In the 1850s Moongool consolidated holding was composed of the runs of several blocks. In 1884 the “Runs” were consolidated but were not divided until April 1888. Moongool, which is only 16 km South of Yuleba, was purchased by the Price family in 1954 for 2/6 an acre. It consisted of Brigalow, Belah, Box and Sandlewood scrub country.

Moongool is a Commercial breeding and fattening enterprise, along with a Charolais stud which was founded in 1985.

The stud operation is based on a number of properties in Maranoa and Western Qld area and the annual on property Bull Sale is conducted in September at Moongool. This year being our 31st annual on property sale. Over the years we’ve had some tremendous results- one being an Australian record price for a bull sold at auction( $265,000).

23.5. The vendor acknowledges that the agent may take enforcement, repossession or other action to recover any livestock for which the buyer has not paid in full, or the Price of such livestock, owing by the buyer under these terms and conditions:

(a) when this clause does not apply, as agent of the vendor (including by reselling the livestock); and

(b) when this clause applies, on the agent’s own behalf exercising the rights of the vendor by subrogation or assignment under these terms and conditions (whether in the vendor’s name or not) and, where title to the livestock has not passed to the agent, by selling the livestock as agent of the vendor without the agent having to account to the vendor for the proceeds of sale.

23.6. The agent may at any time, assign, transfer, securitise or otherwise dispose of all or any of its rights under these terms and conditions and any debts created pursuant to it (including, without limitation, the rights assigned to it under clause 23.3).

23.7. The vendor hereby irrevocably appoints the agent as the vendor’s attorney to:

(a) do at any time

35. A buyer with the benefit of owners risk protection is not liable to pay the Price of that animal to the vendor. The buyer remains nevertheless liable for all costs incurred after the fall of the hammer in transport, slaughter, testing and disposal of the animal.

36. Owners risk protection is available to the buyer of cattle to which this chapter applies if all of the following are satisfied:

(a) a certificate is issued by AQIS which states the relevant NLIS RFID tag number and PIC, the date of the certificate, the reason for condemnation and that the reason for condemnation existed prior to the fall of the hammer;

(b) the certificate is received by the selling agent either in its original form or by fax by 5:00pm on the 7th day after the fall of the hammer; and

(c) if the condemnation is due to chemical residue the certificate follows testing in an AQIS approved laboratory which establishes maximum residue limits in excess of the Australian limit.

37. Owners risk does not apply, and the buyer must pay for the cattle if the reason
