In Tartu, a city of cafes, it’s hard to surprise anyone, but the GMP Patisserie still does: the pastry display case makes you feel like you’ve ended up in Paris. The cakes and other baked goods not only look French, but also taste French: the croissants are light and crisp, the tartlets are elegant, and the eclairs are truly classic. The French confectioner has finessed the cakes and pastries, and at his request, the baguette flour is imported directly from France -- the local varieties do not produce the proper taste. Breakfast is served until noon, after which the menu also includes heartier fare. The experience is refined by soft chansons, fresh daily newspapers, and a bookshelf with French and Parisian-themed publications.
