LIMELIGHT: THE WORLD’S FIRST FILM STUDIO
Captain Joseph Perry of The Salvation Army, whilst manager of the Ballarat Prison-Gate Home, set up his own photographic studio and dark room. He produced and used his own glass lantern-slides to emphasise his sermons and lectures. Such was the impact of his lantern shows that in November 1891 he was brought to the Melbourne Headquarters to produce a set of lantern-slides to advertise the visit of William Booth to Australia. Thus the “Limelight Department” of The Salvation Army was born, its pioneering film production and presentation unit in Australia. The unit also documented Australia’s Federation ceremonies in 1901. Welcome to BALLARAT
The name “Ballaarat” is derived from the Wathaurung Aboriginal name for the area, balla arat, meaning “resting place”. Built on fortunes made from the 1850s gold rush, Ballarat is known for its rich history, culture and beautifully preserved Victorian era architecture. You’d be forgiven for thinking you’re in Europe.
Ballarat is still yielding treasure today, in the form of quirky shops, hidden bars and worldclass cafés and restaurants... not to mention our lively music, art and performance scene. Best of Ballarat has been created to help visitors and locals make the most of what Ballarat has to offer... so start exploring!!
Eat & Drink
Ballaratians are spoilt for choice when it comes to eating out. You’ll find a strong and vibrant cafe culture just like in the big smoke. Farm-gate to plate doesn’t come any fresher than direct from the heartland of regional Victoria. Gourmet menus matched with boutique local wines can be savoured in intimate restaurants, or sample hand-crafted beer and hearty pub fare in rejuvenated historic venues. GALAH
Presented by GRAPA (NSW) and local artists
Being a big wig and going places isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be… What is that space between existing and not existing? When someone leaves home but doesn’t arrive anywhere, where are they? There was once a time when you could leave one place and expect to arrive at another place; perhaps even to the destination you had set out for. But what if this doesn’t happen? What if you arrive somewhere which is actually nowhere? And what has a galah got to do with it anyway? All proceeds will go towards supporting refugee families in Ballarat. The event is an initiative of Rural Australian’s for Refugees Ballarat. Tix at the door. Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute

11 AUG 7:30pm A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM
Presented by Melbourne City Ballet
Lovers, fairies and mischief conspire under moonlight in Shakespeare’s classic tale. Set to the inspiring music of Mendelssohn, the chaotic story of four young lovers, a vengeful king and meddling fairies will prove falling in love can make fools of everyone. Full of flittering fairies, mischievous magic and misadventures, this charming ballet will be a delightful journey from the royal court into a magical realm.

BAKERSFIELD MIST by Stephen Sachs
Is the true value of art in the eye of the beholder?
Maude (Julie Nihill), an unemployed bartender, has bought a painting for a few bucks from an op shop. Despite almost trashing it, she now thinks it’s a Jackson Pollock worth millions. In fact she’s certain it is. But when world-class art expert, Lionel Percy (John Wood), flies over from New York and arrives at her trailer park home in Bakersfield to authenticate the painting, he really has no idea what he’s about to discover. Based on a true story, Bakersfield Mist is a comedy set in the present day. Her Majesty’s
