The name “Ballaarat” is derived from the Wathaurung Aboriginal name for the area, balla arat, meaning “resting place”. Built on fortunes made from the 1850s gold rush, Ballarat is known for its rich history, culture and beautifully preserved Victorian era architecture.
Ballarat is still yielding treasure today, in the form of quirky shops, hidden bars and worldclass cafés and restaurants... not to mention our lively music, art and performance scene.
Best of Ballarat has been created to help visitors and locals make the most of what Ballarat has to offer... so start exploring!!

Presented by The Bard in Buninyong
A joyous 90 minute version of Shakespeare’s “As You Like It”, a story of love and redemption set in the beautiful Buninyong Botanic Gardens. Bring a picnic! Comedy, songs and dancing, a celebration of love and life! Simplified story and text make The Bard in Buninyong’s shows accessible to all. Outdoor Shakespeare at it’s best!
Tix: trybooking.com or purchase tickets at the gate on the night.
Buninyong Botanic Gardens Scott St, Buninyong
A den of debauchery and decadence. It’s 1924, prohibition is in full swing and so are the parties and speakeasies. Bathtub gin abounds and a raid from the police is always a risk. Will you take it? Music, burlesque, song, satire, whiskey, rhinestones and a whole lot of talent.
A sumptuous variety show, a tribute to the glorious performers that were stars along the famous streets of The French Quarter, in bars in Bourbon St and in the infamous Storyville red light district. Tickets: ballarattickets.com.au
