Welcome to BALLARAT

The name “Ballaarat” is derived from the Wathaurung Aboriginal name for the area, balla arat, meaning “resting place”. Built on fortunes made from the 1850s gold rush, Ballarat is known for its rich history, culture and beautifully preserved Victorian era architecture.

Ballarat is still yielding treasure today, in the form of quirky shops, hidden bars and worldclass cafés and restaurants... not to mention our lively music, art and performance scene.

Best of Ballarat has been created to help visitors and locals make the most of what Ballarat has to offer... so start exploring!!

FABULOUS MAUDE

This exhibition showcases the contrasts and commonalities between a pioneering Creswick female artist of the late 1800s, Maude Glover Fleay, and a group of modern female artists of Ballarat today. The exhibition is inspired by Maude's life and works, celebrating her work as a botanical artist and an environmentalist who was ahead of her time. From fine art, abstract contemporary works to ceramics & jewellery, this group exhibition breathes a new power into Maude’s artistic work, celebrating her energies and reinventing her for today.

MEGAN EVANS: PARLOUR

The Lindsay Family Parlour has been a permanent feature of the Gallery since 1967, created to house objects and furniture from the Creswick home of the Lindsay family of artists. Megan Evans will take over this classic Victorian space, inserting her family portraits and dismembered furniture, replacing much of the Lindsay family memorabilia with her own. The processes employed in this work, symbolic of both personal and universal histories, are combined to unsettle traditional understandings of ownership, memory and identity. Evans will activate the installation dressed in a replica of her great grandmother’s dress during Ballarat Heritage Weekend, 26-27 May: 10:30am, 1 & 3pm both days.

DRESS CODE: THE FIRST FIVE YEARS

MARYANNE COUTTS

This exhibition is the result of a ritualistic daily practice, where each day since 2013 the artist has made a drawing in response to what she wore that day. “Dress Code is a project which attempts to harness the ways that the days continue to follow each other, one after the other; unstoppable. It is a journal of what I wear each day – not in a ‘realistic’ or documentary way – but a fluid emotional extension of the creative activity of getting dressed in the morning. Each morning; every morning.”

The music, the stories and the laughs that stopped the show. She is Australia’s leading lady of musical theatre. He is Australia’s favourite song and dance man. Together on stage, these two stars are brightly shining. Nancye Hayes and Todd McKenney are pals, chums, bosom buddies. In this new show, they reflect on their stage careers and their life in showbiz. They sing, they dance, they reminisce - about the lows as well as the highs. They tell backstage stories never before told and they show video footage never before seen!

26 APR - 5 MAY

MARGARET OF ANJOU

Graduating 3rd Year Acting Company.

As Margaret matures from feisty princess to scheming queen, from cold blooded killer to grief-stricken mother, from shameless adulteress to cursing crone, the hapless men who surround her are unable to withstand the fury of her ‘tiger’s heart wrapped in a woman’s hide’.

Helen Macpherson Smith Theatre

27 APR - 5 MAY

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM

Graduating 3rd Year Acting Company.

Four young lovers escape the stifling, conservative, patriarchal government - only to fall prey to the mischievous politics of the mystical world.

Helen Macpherson Smith Theatre

11 - 19 MAY

CRUSADE

Graduating 3rd Year Music Theatre Company. Based on the true story of a young shepherd boy who led 30,000 children in an attempt to win back the Holy Land. This remarkable episode takes us into the world of mediaeval France, the innocence & naivety of blind faith, the treachery & darkness that lives in the minds of men while exploring the power and survival of the human spirit against all odds.

Helen Macpherson Smith Theatre

24 - 26 MAY

THE WILD BLUE

2nd Year Music Theatre Company. A community of people living in the wake of September 11, 2001, set within an imagined aeroplane, soaring over the night sky, with no pilot and no known destination. Each character is charged with the overwhelming urge to fall from the plane, and risk everything to secure their deepest most personal desire, shifting the momentum of their lives forever.

Post Office Box Theatre

31 MAY - 2 JUN

THE CHAPEL PERILOUS

2nd Year Acting Company. Sally Banner is on a quest to know herself deeply, and to choose her own path, without concession, whatever the consequences. The play makes plain the insidious and shrewdly exacted, personal and social cost to women who buck the system and refuse to cave in to social expectations.
