Welcome to BALLARAT
The name “Ballaarat” is derived from the Wathaurung Aboriginal name for the area, balla arat, meaning “resting place”. Built on fortunes made from the 1850s gold rush, Ballarat is known for its rich history, culture and beautifully preserved Victorian era architecture. You’d be forgiven for thinking you’re in Europe.
Ballarat is still yielding treasure today, in the form of quirky shops, hidden bars and worldclass cafés and restaurants... not to mention our lively music, art and performance scene. Best of Ballarat has been created to help visitors and locals make the most of what Ballarat has to offer... so start exploring!!

Ballaratians are spoilt for choice when it comes to eating out. You’ll find a strong and vibrant cafe culture just like in the big smoke. Farm-gate to plate doesn’t come any fresher than direct from the heartland of regional Victoria. Gourmet menus matched with boutique local wines can be savoured in intimate restaurants, or sample hand-crafted beer and hearty pub fare in rejuvenated historic venues. Ballarat is a foodie’s delight.

LAUREN BLACK: MEMENTO MORI:
ART, MEDICINE AND THE BODY
While artist Lauren Black is well-known for her detailed botanical work, in this exhibition she departs from her usual themes to examine the body, juxtaposing detailed anatomical drawings of human diseases with artworks inspired by traditional Chinese medicine. The exhibition sensitively brings together two very different ways of observing the body and approaching human health, allowing for reflection on the fragility of life and the inevitability of death.
LAUREN BLACK: A COMPLEX BEAUTY
Lauren Black builds on the themes of the related exhibition Memento Mori. She continues her work with diseased human remains, but shifts our engagement as she explores the territory of anatomical theatre, dissection, the complexities of disease and the unknown body. In her hands, pathological specimens cast off their museum identities and become once again vibrant material with a past & a ghostly afterlife.

Caryl Churchill’s rollicking take-down of the birth of casino capitalism is a cross between a rock musical, a murder mystery and a modern morality play. As we live through the aftershocks of the Global Financial Collapse, Churchill’s evocation of blood-thirsty competition is astonishingly relevant and current.

In 1939, Europe was on the brink of war. Bertolt Brecht’s response to the chaos was Mother Courage and Her Children - an epic and deeply moving examination of the grim realities of war, a provocative rejection of fascism, and a masterpiece. Set during 12 years of the 30 Years War in Europe, it is the story of Anna Fierling, a woman who survived by selling provisions to troops, including clothing and items she strips from the dead.
