Welcome to BALLARAT
The name “Ballaarat” is derived from the Wathaurung Aboriginal name for the area, balla arat, meaning “resting place”. Built on fortunes made from the 1850s gold rush, Ballarat is known for its rich history, culture and beautifully preserved Victorian era architecture. You’d be forgiven for thinking you’re in Europe. Ballarat is still yielding treasure today, in the form of quirky shops, hidden bars and worldclass cafés and restaurants... not to mention our lively music, art and performance scene. Best of Ballarat has been created to help visitors and locals make the most of what Ballarat has to offer... so start exploring!!

Eat & Drink Ballaratians are spoilt for choice when it comes to eating out. You’ll find a strong and vibrant cafe culture just like in the big smoke. Farm-gate to plate doesn’t come any fresher than direct from the heartland of regional Victoria. Gourmet menus matched with boutique local wines can be savoured in intimate restaurants, or sample hand-crafted beer and hearty pub fare in rejuvenated historic venues. Ballarat is a foodie’s delight.

Mirra Whale “Red Self” Oil on canvas, 79 x 79cm
The idea of documenting one’s self is not a new idea. Throughout history artists have documented the beauty and the decay of their own form, with artists such as Van Gogh and Rembrandt making it a central part of their work throughout their lifetime. The process of creating a self-portrait is considered a valuable part of the artist’s philosophical exploration of “who am I” or declaration of “this is me”. In this group show artists respond to the question “how is this you?” Traditional portraiture sits alongside video works. Instagram collections sit alongside sculpture. But all of the works reveal a window into the identity of the artist.

NATURE BRUTE
Artist: Roz Avent
“Nature Brute” is a solo exhibition by Central Victoria artist, Roz Avent. This series of large format charcoal drawings focus on capturing her surrounding environment. As Roz explains “For most of my life this landscape with it’s monotonous yet chaotic appearance and its inhospitable and indifferent nature made me recoil from any thought of exploring it visually. A few years ago a shift occurred in my thinking when I began to see the contrast of light and dark, the wide range of surface textures, multiple points of entry and extraordinary forms as exciting material for drawing.”
