welcome to BALLARAT
The name “Ballaarat” is derived from the Wathaurung Aboriginal name for the area, balla arat, meaning “resting place”. Built on fortunes made from the 1850s gold rush, Ballarat is known for its rich history, culture and beautifully preserved Victorian era architecture.
Ballarat is still yielding treasure today, in the form of quirky shops, hidden bars and worldclass cafés and restaurants... not to mention our lively music, art and performance scene.
Best of Ballarat has been created to help visitors and locals make the most of what Ballarat has to offer... so start exploring!!

LOUISEANN KING: SOLIS
Louiseann King is a maker and a collector of time and place; her practice is one where she works with nuance, subtlety, the liminal, the forgotten and the lost. A woman artist working in bronze in a field dominated by men, with a practice which is inherently feminine and ‘other’. In her practice, bronze is both inherently monumental and heroic, and also deeply seductive and sensual in its potential to enable transformation.

PICASSO: THE VOLLARD SUITE
Pablo Picasso's Vollard Suite is a set of 100 etchings, engravings and aquatints created by the artist in the 1930s and named after Ambroise Vollard, his sometime art dealer and publisher. The Art Gallery of Ballarat is the only Victorian venue for this National Gallery of Australia touring exhibition. Picasso once said of the role of an artist, 'it's not what the artist does that counts, but what he is'. He identified himself, along with his own sense of artistic creativity and sexuality, with the mythical figure of the Minotaur. Nowhere is the link between the artist and 'the untamable beast', to use Picasso's words, more apparent than in the Vollard Suite.

NANA OHNESORGE: NO PICNIC AT NGANNELONG
At the age of 21, German-Australian artist Nana Ohnesorge saw Peter Weir’s 1975 film Picnic at Hanging Rock on German television and was deeply affected by the power, spirituality and mystery of the Country and its ancestors. After moving to Australia, she developed an understanding of the significance of Hanging Rock (Ngannelong) as a site of deep spiritual significance for the Indigenous peoples of the area. In No Picnic at Ngannelong, Ohnesorge reexamines representation of Indigenous people and cultures in Australian cinema, presenting Joan Lindsay, author of the 1967 novel Picnic at Hanging Rock, as the creator of a myth which has overlaid and obscured the Indigenous significance of the site.

GUIRGUIS NEW ART PRIZE 2019
by Shelley Hinton, CuratorThe Guirguis New Art Prize (GNAP) is now positioned as an important and prestigious art prize exhibition with a reputation for showcasing the work of some of the best contemporary artists in the country.
Since it began in 2013, GNAP has provided an insight into a broad cross-section of Australian contemporary artistic practice at a time when we have all observed an increased engagement with contemporary art by a broader public across the nation. New for the 2019 exhibition will be the emergence of more pictorial and narrative-based painting, as well as the inclusion of ceramics and textiles. GNAP19 also presents a strongly affirmative gender balance, with the work of 14 women, six of them Indigenous, among the 16 artists.
The GNAP19 artists include: Karen Mills & Neridah Stockley (NT); Janet Fieldhouse, Grace Lillian Lee, Naomi Hobson, Shirley Macnamara & Claudia Moodoonuthi (QLD); Amanda Davies & Tricky Walsh (TAS); Nicola Smith & Caroline Garcia (NSW); Marie Hagerty & Raquel Ormella (ACT) and Laresa Kosloff (VIC). Benjamin Armstrong & Matt Hinkley (VIC) are the only male artists this year.
With painting returning to the mix, the show reveals a broad range of striking approaches by important Indigenous artists. Karen Mills’ landscape paintings of remembered places, experiences and feelings about Country capture a sense of the rich history and survival of Aboriginal culture – the natural ochres and dry pigments creating a stunning luminosity and textural qualities within the layered surfaces. Naomi Hobson’s paintings act as a link between individuality and a shared identity; her bright abstracted imagery is inspired by the vast traditional lands of her ancestors in Coen in far north Queensland. Conversely, Claudia Moodoonuthi’s installation with painted and printed objects is a humorous yet sensitive
Marie Hagerty’s expertise as a painter is evident in her superb surface effects and planes and manipulation of curvilinear surface forms that appear to shift, mutate and evolve from the formal to a form of sophisticated sexual play, while Nicola Smith’s process-based practice is concerned with the relationship between cinema and painting. The act of painting, repetition and the passing of time are her main interests, capturing particular scenes from the 1978 film Girlfriends directed by 1940s filmmaker, Claudia Weill.
Amanda Davies also presents a compelling body of figurative paintings revealing her long interest in self-portraiture, identity, transformation and gesture, while exploring historical religious imagery and the subject of honey, long associated with providing medicinal, surgical and spiritual benefits.
Neridah Stockley’s sublime abstract paintings, presented alongside and in relation to her beautiful ceramic objects, reflect her ongoing interest in ideas surrounding urban, remote, coastal and domestic places and landscapes. Janet Fieldhouse’s ceramic sculptural forms continue her interests in a reimagining of the powerful forces that shaped Torres Strait Island culture, particularly body scarification and the power of the body to hold knowledge.
The textiles and body adornment sculptures created by Grace Lillian Lee combine the ancient techniques and sophisticated skills of weaving, celebrating her rich Indigenous cultural heritage and at the same time reinterpreting and melding contemporary fashion. Shirley Macnamara’s poetic woven objects of immense beauty and poignancy reflect her skills and process, while revealing multilayered meanings that draw upon issues of environment, history, politics, culture, family and deeply personal emotions surrounding her heritage as an Aboriginal woman.
Video will also feature in GNAP19 with two contrasting approaches. Caroline Garcia explores discrimination from a Filipino perspective and what she terms the history of ‘whitewashing’ in cinema, in a video that positions and sequences the artist within
dramatic scenes as the ‘other’ and the culturally ‘exotic’, while Laresa Kosloff’s slick, seductive video La Perruque, a French term that translates into ‘wearing the wig’, humorously explores the aesthetics of corporate culture and the ethics of doing the wrong thing at work, alongside themes of skulduggery, duplicity and creative diversion.
Benjamin Armstrong’s work examines a perspective on Indigenous and colonial history in Invisible Stories: Five Meditations on Port Essington, a series of linocut prints and unique unprinted cut linoleum blocks relating to Australian author Mark McKenna’s 2016 book, From the Edge: Australia’s Lost Histories about Port Essington that analyses the experiences of early nineteenth-century British explorers in West Arnhem Land and how they tried and failed to establish a settlement there.
Matt Hinkley’s miniature sculptural forms, with intricate detail, take on an almost perverse quality. Much of the fine detail of the individual components is derived from an acute sense of observation and what could be called a modest, almost selfeffacing practice that focuses on the ordinary and the banal.
Raquel Ormella’s large-scale reworked, altered flag Problematic Fragments #2 (Deakin), 2019 reminds us to reconsider Alfred Deakin’s words and notions of nationhood and the state and not to forget key political moments that have not only hindered and restricted government policy in Australia but continue to affect us all.
Interested in Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometries, Tricky Walsh’s interactive sculptural work Ana-kata-scope, taken from the concepts of Ana and Kata, theorised by the 1888 British mathematician Charles Howard Hinton, provides a mechanism for looking beyond what we may perceive unaided and encourages viewers to speculatively ‘perceive’ the fourth dimension.
GNAP is administered by Federation University Australia, through the generous sponsorship of local surgeon Mr Mark Guirguis, and through a key partnership with the Art Gallery of Ballarat. The $20,000 winning artist will be announced at the formal exhibition opening on Friday 5 April at the Art Gallery of Ballarat.
GNAP19 will be open daily, 10am - 5pm, Sat 30 March - Sun 2 June at the Art Gallery of Ballarat and the Post Office Gallery. For more information about a GNAP19 seminar and artist talks visit: federation.edu.au/gnap

MOVING ON
Presented by Creswick Theatre Company
Moving On tells the story of a farming family denying the inevitability of change. It is happening in their relationships, their values, their daily work. Outside influences are impacting as well. While we try to hold on to the past, we deny ourselves the growth and joy that acceptance of these forces of change might bring. Written by Greg Roberts and directed by Jenni Sewell.

STORIES FROM THE CHOIR
Presented by Choral Edge
This is a choral concert like none you’ve seen before. No standing in rows, no folders, no church pews. A seamless combination of theatre, journalism, a cappella jams and choral classics, Stories from the Choir beckons audiences into the weird and wonderful world of ensembles through a warm and immersive experience. Interviews collected from choristers around the country tell stories of climbing mountains, drinking Midori, finding friends and falling in love – all set to a live soundtrack enacted by Melbourne’s finest choral singers. ART VERSUS ENTERTAINMENT
CIRCUS, MAGIC & COMEDY SPECTACULAR
Presented by Varietyville Productions
Two 'must see' artists of outrageously funny proportions combining their talents into one incredible show for your pleasure! Starring two of Australia’s finest and funniest idiots — Daniel Oldaker “Dandyman” and Rani Huszar “Foxy Moron” — these two have toured the globe for over two decades in theatres, opera houses, festivals, on the street and now they come to an event near you! Two worlds collide in an irreverent spectacle of ridiculous proportions. A farcical foray of circus, comedy, dance and magic. Is it Art? Is it Entertainment? Only you will know as you witness masterful mayhem when these two indispensable fools titillate your senses in a journey of the absolute absurd. With directorial assistance from the world-renowned variety star Captain Frodo, this is a not-to-be missed show full of masterful mayhem and silly skits bordering on the surreal.
