The name “Ballaarat” is derived from the Wathaurung Aboriginal name for the area, balla arat, meaning “resting place”. Built on fortunes made from the 1850s gold rush, Ballarat is known for its rich history, culture and beautifully preserved Victorian era architecture.

LIZ SOUTER RETROSPECTIVE: FOUR DECADES OF BASKETMAKING

Liz Souter turned basket-making into an art form, creating sculptural works from homegrown and recycled materials. Her stitched baskets, made from threads such as precious silks and indigo dyed camel hair, could take many hours to make. She travelled widely absorbing influences from other cultures but was always original with a richness and fine eye for decorative touches. Curated by Kate Souter.

AT THE END OF THE WAR: FROM DIGGER TO FARMER

After WWI the Soldiers’ Settlement scheme was established throughout Australia. Until 1934, 11,639 returned servicemen were allocated blocks under the scheme. Unfortunately not all were successful. This exhibition will tell the stories of those who took up land in our district.

Paintings by Diokno Pasilan. These paintings are reworked and renovated pieces that Pasilan abandoned, temporally incomplete some years ago. Artist Lilli Waters showcases pieces from various works in the next collaboration between Craig’s Royal Hotel and the Ballarat International Foto Biennale. The wide-ranging exhibition touches on topics including our relationship with nature, female identity, youth, belonging and girlhood. These images take us to places including Tasmania and Billinudgel, NSW. Lilli Waters’ ongoing preoccupation is capturing

This exhibition of mixed media works is based on a series of podcast conversations between artist Tai Snaith and mid-career and emerging artists she admires. Snaith and her interviewees explored the shifts and similarities that artists face in their lives and artistic practices, attempting to break down the how and why of making art. BECOMING MODERN: AUSTRALIAN WOMEN ARTISTS 1920–1950

During the early decades of the 20th century, women were becoming more visible in the arts in Australia than ever before. Becoming Modern is a celebration of the tenacity and innovation of Australian women artists, featuring works by Margaret Preston, Grace Crowley, Thea Proctor, Grace Cossington Smith and many others.

NANA OHNESORGE: NO PICNIC AT NGANNELONG

At the age of 21, German-Australian artist Nana Ohnesorge saw Peter Weir’s 1975 film Picnic at Hanging Rock on German television and was deeply affected by the power, spirituality and mystery of the Country and its ancestors. After moving to Australia, she developed an understanding of the significance of Hanging Rock (Ngannelong) as a site of deep spiritual significance for the Indigenous peoples of the area. In No Picnic at Ngannelong, Ohnesorge re-examines representation of Indigenous people and cultures in Australian cinema.
