The name “Ballaarat” is derived from the Wathaurung Aboriginal name for the area, balla arat, meaning “resting place”. Built on fortunes made from the 1850s gold rush, Ballarat is known for its rich history, culture and beautifully preserved Victorian era architecture.
Ballarat is still yielding treasure today, in the form of quirky shops, hidden bars and worldclass cafés and restaurants... not to mention our lively music, art and performance scene.
Best of Ballarat has been created to help visitors and locals make the most of what Ballarat has to offer... so start exploring!!

Liz Souter turned basket-making into an art form, creating sculptural works from homegrown and recycled materials. Her stitched baskets, made from threads such as precious silks and indigo dyed camel hair, could take many hours to make. She travelled widely absorbing influences from other cultures but was always original with a richness and fine eye for decorative touches. Curated by Kate Souter.

During the early decades of the 20th century, women were becoming more visible in the arts in Australia than ever before. Although the art world in Australia was still dominated by men and women artists were still subject to prejudice from their male counterparts and critics, women became renowned for their bold and groundbreaking use of colour, line and form and bright new approaches to the depiction of Australian themes. Becoming Modern is a celebration of the tenacity and innovation of Australian women artists, featuring works by Margaret Preston, Grace Crowley, Thea Proctor, Grace Cossington Smith and many others.

At the age of 21, German-Australian artist Nana Ohnesorge saw Peter Weir’s 1975 film Picnic at Hanging Rock on German television and was deeply affected by the power, spirituality and mystery of the Country and its ancestors. After moving to Australia, she developed an understanding of the significance of Hanging Rock (Ngannelong) as a site of deep spiritual significance for the Indigenous peoples of the area. In No Picnic at Ngannelong, Ohnesorge re-examines representation of Indigenous people and cultures in Australian cinema.

29 MAY - 1 JUN
Everyman is rich, successful and on top of the world when Death comes knocking on their door; but what, or who, can you take with you when you go? In a dynamic, contemporary adaptation by Carol Ann Duffy, this medieval myth asks how we can ever measure the true value of our lives.
Post Office Box Theatre
30 MAY - 2 JUN
The original cautionary tales as told to the Grimm brothers. Distinctively infused with oral storytelling history: they possess elaborate symbology and the residue of multiple retellings. Beasts transform, villains are absurd and sinister, parents are imperfect or absent, and heroines undertake epic journeys to save their loves.
Post Office Box Theatre
6 - 15 JUN
A funny, heartfelt journey into the world of Dr. Seuss. The musical weaves a story of friendship, loyalty, and love. Despite all odds, Horton and Gertrude band together to save the Whos and restore peace and unity to the Jungle of Nool. Seussical shows us the power of being unique, and the importance of fighting for your beliefs.
Helen Macpherson Smith TheatreSAT 1 JUN 7:30pm
Presented by Highway 1 Theatre Company
The UK is in crisis! Debt is spiralling, unemployment is on the rise and the fragile coalition cabinet, led by Prime Minister Jim Hacker, is at breaking point. But salvation may exist in the form of a complex pipeline deal with the oil-rich country of Kumranistan. Can the Prime Minister save Europe, avoid a national scandal, and (more importantly) save his job?
From the writers of the original television series comes this equally sharp and satirical stage version. Tix: trybooking.com

Andrew Bovell's Speaking in Tongues is a play about marital infidelity, with multiple narratives and a mystery at its core. First performed in 1996 in a production by Griffin Theatre Company, Sydney, it was later adapted into the screenplay for the feature film Lantana. Two couples set out to betray their partners, a lover returns from the past and a husband doesn’t answer the phone. A woman disappears and a neighbour is the prime suspect. Subtlety, humour and compassion are bought to the stage in this richly entertaining modern classic. Tix: hermaj.com
