welcome to BALLARAT
The name “Ballaarat” is derived from the Wathaurung Aboriginal name for the area, balla arat, meaning “resting place”. Built on fortunes made from the 1850s gold rush, Ballarat is known for its rich history, culture and beautifully preserved Victorian era architecture.
Ballarat is still yielding treasure today, in the form of quirky shops, hidden bars and worldclass cafés and restaurants... not to mention our lively music, art and performance scene.
Best of Ballarat has been created to help visitors and locals make the most of what Ballarat has to offer... so start exploring!!

PICASSO: THE VOLLARD SUITE
Pablo Picasso's Vollard Suite is a set of 100 etchings, engravings and aquatints created by the artist in the 1930s and named after Ambroise Vollard, his sometime art dealer and publisher. The Art Gallery of Ballarat is the only Victorian venue for this National Gallery of Australia touring exhibition. Picasso once said of the role of an artist, 'it's not what the artist does that counts, but what he is'. He identified himself, along with his own sense of artistic creativity and sexuality, with the mythical figure of the Minotaur. Nowhere is the link between the artist and 'the untamable beast', to use Picasso's words, more apparent than in the Vollard Suite.

LOUISEANN KING: SOLIS
Louiseann King is a maker and a collector of time and place; her practice is one where she works with nuance, subtlety, the liminal, the forgotten and the lost. A woman artist working in bronze in a field dominated by men, with a practice which is inherently feminine and ‘other’. In her practice, bronze is both inherently monumental and heroic, and also deeply seductive and sensual in its potential to enable transformation.

HAPPENINGS HAPPENINGS
In June 2018, the dedicated volunteers at the Ballarat Tramway Museum launched an ambitious project to recreate the Floral Trams of the 1930s for the 2019 Ballarat Begonia Festival. With the help of dozens of volunteers throughout the community, their dream has become reality. We spoke to Peter & Pamela Waugh at the Ballarat Tramway Museum.
Tell us a little about the history of the floral trams in Ballarat.
The first floral tram was created in 1938 for the Ballarat centenary’s Floral Festival, when the whole city was decorated with thousands of flowers, real and artificial. A second tram was decorated in 1939 and as well as being covered in wax paper flowers, it was also covered in light globes so it was illuminated at night. This celebrated the turning on of Ballarat’s first electric street lighting. What made you decide to re-invent the floral tram in 2019?
In 2018 the Tramway Museum was looking for a way to both engage its own members, but also reach out into the community. A photo of the 1939 tram gave us the inspiration to re-imagine the tram eighty years later. The first trams were decorated with paper (and it rained in 1939), but while searching the internet for techniques to make the flowers, we discovered flowers created from recycled plastic bags and bottles.
You’ve made all the flowers from plastic waste materials - what drove that decision?
The use of recycled materials meant that we could create the decorations for very little cost, and for a small museum cost is always a major consideration. We spent several months learning the techniques and making prototypes to test for durability. Step-by-step instruction sheets with lots of photos were written and made available on our website. A series of public workshops were held at the Museum, and during the next six months over 120 people came along to make flowers.
You’ve had huge interest and help from the local community - tell us more about that. The community response to the project was overwhelming. We were inundated with bottles and bags from individuals, schools and businesses. Many people attending the 12 public workshops also organized their own, and we assisted with at least another 27 workshops at churches, scout and guide groups, neighbourhood houses, the Country Womens’ Association, and even private bottle parties. We ran workshops for Ballarat Regional Industries, who donated boxes of glue sticks left over from earlier contracts. Our target was 2500 flowers, and over 5000 were made!
When can the public ride the floral tram?
The 2019 Floral Tram (a former Melbourne W3 class tram, No. 661, built in 1932) was officially launched on Sun 24 February, when the volunteer flower makers got to see the results of their work for the first time. The Floral Tram will operate in Wendouree Parade for all three days of the Ballarat Begonia Festival and everyone is welcome to come for a ride. We also hope the tram will continue to operate on selected weekends during autumn.
The Ballarat Begonia Festival is at the Ballarat Botanical Gardens from 9-11 March, 2019.

MOVING ON
Presented by Creswick Theatre Company
Moving On tells the story of a farming family denying the inevitability of change. It is happening in their relationships, their values, their daily work. Outside influences are impacting as well. While we try to hold on to the past, we deny ourselves the growth and joy that acceptance of these forces of change might bring. Written by Greg Roberts and directed by Jenni Sewell.
