welcome to BALLARAT
The name “Ballaarat” is derived from the Wathaurung Aboriginal name for the area, balla arat, meaning “resting place”. Built on fortunes made from the 1850s gold rush, Ballarat is known for its rich history, culture and beautifully preserved Victorian era architecture.
Ballarat is still yielding treasure today, in the form of quirky shops, hidden bars and worldclass cafés and restaurants... not to mention our lively music, art and performance scene.
Best of Ballarat has been created to help visitors and locals make the most of what Ballarat has to offer... so start exploring!!

BECOMING MODERN: AUSTRALIAN WOMEN ARTISTS 1920–1950
During the early decades of the 20th century, women were becoming more visible in the arts in Australia than ever before. Although the art world in Australia was still dominated by men and women artists were still subject to prejudice from their male counterparts and critics, women became renowned for their bold and groundbreaking use of colour, line and form and bright new approaches to the depiction of Australian themes. Becoming Modern is a celebration of the tenacity and innovation of Australian women artists. It features works by over forty artists, including Margaret Preston, Grace Crowley, Thea Proctor and Grace Cossington Smith.

NANA OHNESORGE: NO PICNIC AT NGANNELONG
At the age of 21, German-Australian artist Nana Ohnesorge saw Peter Weir’s 1975 film Picnic at Hanging Rock on German television and was deeply affected by the power, spirituality and mystery of the Country and its ancestors. After moving to Australia, she developed an understanding of the significance of Hanging Rock (Ngannelong) as a site of deep spiritual significance for the Indigenous peoples of the area. In No Picnic at Ngannelong, Ohnesorge re-examines representation of Indigenous people and cultures in Australian cinema, presenting Joan Lindsay, author of the 1967 novel Picnic at Hanging Rock, as the creator of a myth which has overlaid and obscured the Indigenous significance of the site.

WORKING A MUSICAL
Working is an evocative musical based on the book by Pulitzer Prize winning author Studs Terkel. It weaves together several characters from all walks of life; schoolteacher, the parking lot attendant, the waitress, the millworker, mason, trucker, the fireman and housewife, culminating in an extraordinary story of ordinary working people. With songs by artists including Stephen Schwartz, Craig Carnelia, Micki Grant, Mary Rodgers, James Taylor and Susan Birkenhead, Working is one of the most accessible, relevant and compelling musicals ever created.

EVERYMAN
Everyman is rich, successful and on top of the world when Death comes knocking on their door; but what, or who, can you take with you when you go? In a dynamic, contemporary adaptation by Carol Ann Duffy, this medieval myth asks how we can ever measure the true value of our lives.

COLLECTED GRIMM TALES
2nd year Bachelor of Arts Acting students present folk tales adapted by Carol Ann Duffy and dramatised by Tim Supple. These are the original cautionary tales as told to the Grimm brothers. They are distinctively infused with oral storytelling history: they possess elaborate symbology and the residue of multiple retellings. In the Collected Grimm Tales beasts transform, villains are absurd and sinister, parents are imperfect or absent, and heroines undertake epic journeys to save their loves.
