welcome to BALLARAT

The name “Ballaarat” is derived from the Wathaurung Aboriginal name for the area, balla arat, meaning “resting place”. Built on fortunes made from the 1850s gold rush, Ballarat is known for its rich history, culture and beautifully preserved Victorian era architecture.

Ballarat is still yielding treasure today, in the form of quirky shops, hidden bars and worldclass cafés and restaurants... not to mention our lively music, art and performance scene.

Best of Ballarat has been created to help visitors and locals make the most of what Ballarat has to offer... so start exploring!!

ALISON DESMOND, MAX SHARAM AND ELIZABETH WINTER: BETWEEN WORLDS

Alison Desmond writes about art and makes art about language. Here she illustrates a series of animated psychodramas populated by anthropomorphic and imaginary creatures. Interdisciplinary artist and animator, known for her theatrical music and performance, Max Sharam is often ‘between worlds’, living between Manhattan, Berlin and rural Victoria. In her drawings and paintings, Elizabeth Winter focuses on the individual details of a larger picture, looking at the micro rather than the macro. Her series in the exhibition reflects the importance she places on conserving and respecting our natural environment and its creatures. Opening Fri 1 Nov, 6pm.

THROUGHOUT OCTOBER

Ballarat has a rich history of photography. By the early 1890s, the city boasted over a dozen photographic studios capturing the city’s landscape, events & people. The Gold Museum’s photographic collection represents a variety of photographic studios which operated in Ballarat from the 1870s onwards. While some portraits feature prominent Ballarat figures whose stories are etched in local history, other people are less well known. Many of the portraits came into the collection with little information about their subjects, but are still significant for the stories they tell about Ballarat society including popular tastes, fashion choices and the development of photographic technology. Pose captures the people of Ballarat through the lens of its talented studio photographers.

Noémie Goudal is a French artist working with photography, film and installation. The viewer will encounter works depicting what look to be remote mountainous landscapes. Three dimensional in appearance, the images are in fact two dimensional backdrops. The mise-enscène of each work reveals subtle elements of carefully constructed artifice which disrupts the viewer’s perception of a unified mountain. This discontinuity introduces a sense of ambiguity and encourages the viewer to question their sense of place: is this scene real or imagined?

Staged and photographed in situ, Liu Bolin’s images depict meticulously painted human bodies – often his own – hiding in the surroundings of everyday spaces and places; discoverable if the viewer chooses to look attentively. Through the feeling of connection that we share with the human bodies depicted, the viewer is invited to question how the dominant perspectives at play in everyday spaces and places shape our sense of self; feelings of pain, violence or loss, as part of a broader human search for mutual understanding and connectedness.

JANE BURTON [AUS]: THE SUNKEN GARDEN

Jane Burton is known for her depictions of the female body, brooding landscapes, derelict architectures and abandoned interiors. Her work centres around an exploration of feminine desire and is often darkly ambiguous, enigmatic and provocative. In this new work commissioned by the Art Gallery of Ballarat, she focuses on a particular landscape of the Central Highlands Region that she was drawn to: ‘a hidden place that one must walk into for some distance, crossing a kind of psychic threshold’. Until 27 Oct.

Named in honour of the late portrait photographer Martin Kantor, the $15,000 prize is awarded for an exceptional photographic artwork of a significant, living Australian in the fields of art, letters, science, sport or politics. The exhibition will showcase the winner and finalists — cast your vote for the people’s choice award.

CAPITAL

Constructed at the height of the gold rush in 1864, the former Union Bank stands in the centre of Ballarat as a powerful symbol of the rise of western capitalism and the development of colonial Australia. Capital explores the use of photography as a method for reflecting upon systems of value and exchange in contemporary Indigenous & settler cultures. Drawing together Australian and international practices that encounter forms of financial, political, human and photography’s own capital, the project questions the capitalist model and its legacy.

LAIA ABRIL [SPAIN]: A HISTORY OF MISOGYNY, CHAPTER ONE: ON ABORTION

BALLARAT INTERNATIONAL FOTO BIENNALE LIU BOLIN [CHINA]

Commissioned by the Ballarat International Foto Biennale, Rowlands undertook a 3-month residency from Jan - Mar 2019 in the former Union Bank, which now stands proudly as the National Centre For Photography. The artist’s sculptural interventions into walls, ceiling, furniture and carpet enter the space with elegance and poise, indicating a moment of transition. Rowlands presents his photographic records from the exhibition, furthering photography’s relationship with sculpture.

Today, safe and efficient means of abortion finally exist, yet women around the world continue to use ancient, illegal or risky home methods. Why do they take the risk? Laia Abril’s new long-term project A History of Misogyny is a visual research undertaken through historical and contemporary comparisons. In On Abortion, Abril documents and conceptualises the dangers and damages caused by women’s lack of legal, safe and free access to abortion, highlighting the long, continuous erosion of women’s reproductive rights to present-day.

FIONA FOLEY [AUS]: WHO ARE THESE STRANGERS AND WHERE ARE THEY GOING?

Showcasing key works from Fiona Foley’s 30-year career in interactive and site-specific installations and unveiling, in an Australian first, an important musical soundscape. Created with musicians Joe Gala & Teila Watson, it is an aural recreation of the oldest known song in the history of Australia, telling of the exchange between Captain Cook and the Badtjala people. Other centrepieces in the exhibition include an installation comprising 3000 oyster shells, a recontextualisation of Foley’s photographic series Wild Times Call, and a collaboration with the Pitcha Makin Fellas for a new installation alongside 2018’s Horror Has a Face.

BAUHAUS FOTO

2019 marks 100 years since the establishment of the iconic Bauhaus school in Weimar, Germany, and the influence of the school and its subsequent artistic movement continues to be seen around the art world today. While photography was not initially embraced at Bauhaus as an artistic medium in its own right, in the school’s latter years the artform was incorporated. Bauhaus Foto brings together photographic artists from Australia, Germany and Ireland whose contemporary practice shows signs of Bauhaus influence.

ADI NES [ISRAEL]: SOLDIERS

Soldiers is a series of 22 photographs produced between 1994 and 2000 by one of Israel’s leading photographers. Considered one of the most important works in contemporary Israeli photography, many of its prints can be found in prestigious museums and private collections worldwide. Exhibiting this year at BIFB is a combination of both parts, focusing on intermediary moments between privacy and intimacy within the rigid framework of military life, and with the loss of innocence within masculinity.

Six artists received a solo exhibition within the 2019 core program. Judges will award one cash prize of $10,000 to an overall winner, with an extra $1,000 for the People’s Choice Award, as voted by the public.

GIVE US THIS DAY [UK] [USA]

Showcasing the work of Lauren Greenfield & Vanessa Winship, Give Us This Day confronts the realities of the ‘rights’ of children, specifically how intrinsic social values shape a child’s lived experience and dictate the definition of childhood. Traversing macro political themes of war, social and economic inequality, to individual challenges of gender and body image and their relationship to corporate organisations, the exhibition investigates how children negotiate their lives in a world governed by adults.
