The name “Ballaarat” is derived from the Wathaurung Aboriginal name for the area, balla arat, meaning “resting place”. Built on fortunes made from the 1850s gold rush, Ballarat is known for its rich history, culture and beautifully preserved Victorian era architecture.
Ballarat is still yielding treasure today, in the form of quirky shops, hidden bars and worldclass cafés and restaurants... not to mention our lively music, art and performance scene.
Best of Ballarat has been created to help visitors and locals make the most of what Ballarat has to offer... so start exploring!!

& MICHAEL NEEDHAM
Works by Kyneton artist Michael Needham and Melbourne artist Paul Compton. The two men are drawn together by a darkness, a thin line that joins their sense of the unsettling and uncanny. They play with our sense of unease, the fragile nature of our own existence and ego, and how we're all drawn to look into the void of what might lie beyond.

LOUISEANN KING: SOLIS
Louiseann King is a sculptor/installation artist based in Eganstown. King is an oddity and, at times, a curiosity: a woman artist working in bronze in a field dominated by men, with a practice which is inherently feminine and ‘other’. In her practice, bronze is both inherently monumental and heroic, and also deeply seductive and sensual in its potential to enable transformation. solis will feature new sculptural installation works/interventions and include a collaboration with sound artist Philip Samartzis which utilises local eco-acoustic recordings and the particular acoustics of the Crouch Gallery.

21 SEP - 10 FEB MARLENE GILSON
Aunty Marlene Gilson is a Wathaurung (Wadawarrung) Elder living on country in Gordon, near Ballarat. A visual artist who discovered painting later in life, Aunty Marlene’s paintings explore Aboriginal myth and stories of the goldfields. Her work is marked by a naive style which references her Indigenous and European ancestry. She is a descendant of King Billy, an Indigenous tribal leader of the Ballarat region at the time of the Eureka Stockade and his wife Queen Mary. Aunty Marlene positions Koorie stories within the context of these Precolonial and Postcolonial times which are often absent in the understanding of Australian history.

BLUE STOCKINGS
By Jessica Swale. This 2013 play follows the story of four young women fighting for education and self-determination against the larger backdrop of women’s suffrage. Set at Girton College, Cambridge in 1896, the play’s title refers to bluestockings, a derogatory term for female intellectuals.

FRI 14 SEP 5:30pm HELL SHIP
THE JOURNEY OF THE TICONDEROGA
Presented by Her Majesty's Ballarat
Written & performed by Michael Veitch. In the spring of 1852, the emigrant clipper Ticonderoga limped through the heads of Port Phillip Bay after a 3-month voyage from Liverpool. By the time she reached Australia, she was a floating catastrophe. Typhus had erupted throughout her decks, and 100 of her emigrants had perished, hastily buried at sea with what little ceremony could be afforded. Forbidden to enter Melbourne, the Ticonderoga was made to offload her human cargo onto a small beach inside the heads, where a makeshift quarantine hospital was established. Through the tireless efforts of the ship's young surgeon, aided by passengers including a courageous young Scots woman from the Isle of Mull, many lives were saved. As these stories sometimes go, he married the young nurse and the two lived a long and happy life. They were also Michael Veitch's great-great grandparents, James William Henry Veitch & Annie Morrison. Hell Ship is very much a family story. Tix: hermaj.com

29 SEP - 6 OCT PRIDE AND PREJUDICE
Presented by Ballarat National Theatre
Finding a husband is hardly Elizabeth Bennet's most urgent priority. But with four sisters, an overzealous match-making mother, and a string of unsuitable suitors, it's difficult to escape the subject. When the independent-minded Elizabeth meets the handsome but enigmatic Mr. Darcy, she is determined not to let her feelings triumph over her own good sensebut the truth turns out to be slipperier than it seems. In a society where subtle snubs and deceit proliferate, is it possible for Elizabeth and Darcy to look beyond his pride and her prejudice, and to make the best match of all?
