welcome to BALLARAT
The name “Ballaarat” is derived from the Wathaurung Aboriginal name for the area, balla arat, meaning “resting place”. Built on fortunes made from the 1850s gold rush, Ballarat is known for its rich history, culture and beautifully preserved Victorian era architecture.
Ballarat is still yielding treasure today, in the form of quirky shops, hidden bars and worldclass cafés and restaurants... not to mention our lively music, art and performance scene.
Best of Ballarat has been created to help visitors and locals make the most of what Ballarat has to offer... so start exploring!!

MARG DELAHUNTY SPENCER & MARY VAN DEN BROEK: OUR PLACE AND…
Mary is a sculptor, working metal and other natural materials while Margaret is a painter who creates abstract works on linen. Both are mindful of the words of Romanian artist Constantin Brâncusi: ‘the moment you are no longer a child you are already dead’. For this collaborative exhibition, they draw inspiration from a bee hive and the comings and goings and daily rituals of its inhabitants, using different mediums to create fresh new work that speaks of both the significance and the insignificance of our place in the world and the universe. Opening Fri 20 Sep, 6pm.

POSE
Ballarat has a rich history of photography. By the early 1890s, the city boasted over a dozen photographic studios capturing the city’s landscape, events & people. The Gold Museum’s photographic collection represents a variety of photographic studios which operated in Ballarat from the 1870s onwards. While some portraits feature prominent Ballarat figures whose stories are etched in local history, other people are less well known. Many of the portraits came into the collection with little information about their subjects, but are still significant for the stories they tell about Ballarat society including popular tastes, fashion choices and the development of photographic technology. Pose captures the people of Ballarat through the lens of its talented studio photographers.

BALLARAT INTERNATIONAL FOTO BIENNALE LIU BOLIN [CHINA]
Noémie Goudal is a French artist working with photography, film and installation. The viewer will encounter works depicting what look to be remote mountainous landscapes. Three dimensional in appearance, the images are in fact two dimensional backdrops. The mise-enscène of each work reveals subtle elements of carefully constructed artifice which disrupts the viewer’s perception of a unified mountain. This discontinuity introduces a sense of ambiguity and encourages the viewer to question their sense of place: is this scene real or imagined?

Staged and photographed in situ, Liu Bolin’s images depict meticulously painted human bodies – often his own – hiding in the surroundings of everyday spaces and places; discoverable if the viewer chooses to look attentively. Through the feeling of connection that we share with the human bodies depicted, the viewer is invited to question how the dominant perspectives at play in everyday spaces and places shape our sense of self; feelings of pain, violence or loss, as part of a broader human search for mutual understanding and connectedness.

JANE BURTON [AUS]: THE SUNKEN GARDEN
Jane Burton is a photographic artist known for her depictions of the female body, brooding landscapes, derelict architectures and abandoned interiors. Her work centres around an exploration of feminine desire and is often darkly ambiguous, enigmatic and provocative. In this new series of work commissioned by the Art Gallery of Ballarat, she focuses on a particular landscape of the Central Highlands Region that she was drawn to: ‘a hidden place that one must walk into for some distance, crossing a kind of psychic threshold’.

Eugenia Lim is an Australian artist of Chinese–Singaporean descent who works across video, performance and installation to explore how national identities and stereotypes cut, divide and bond our globalised world. Yellow Peril explores the historical and ongoing impact
Named in honour of the late portrait photographer Martin Kantor, the $15,000 prize is awarded for an exceptional photographic artwork of a significant, living Australian in the fields of art, letters, science, sport or politics. CAPITAL
Constructed at the height of the gold rush in 1864, the former Union Bank stands in the centre of Ballarat as a powerful symbol of the rise of western capitalism and the development of colonial Australia. Capital explores the use of photography as a method for reflecting upon systems of value and exchange in contemporary Indigenous & settler cultures. Drawing together Australian and international practices that encounter forms of financial, political, human and photography’s own capital, the project questions the capitalist model and its legacy.

Today, safe and efficient means of abortion finally exist, yet women around the world continue to use ancient, illegal or risky home methods. Why do they take the risk? Laia Abril’s new long-term project A History of Misogyny is a visual research undertaken through historical and contemporary comparisons. In On Abortion, Abril documents and conceptualises the dangers and damages caused by women’s lack of legal, safe and free access to abortion, highlighting the long, continuous erosion of women’s reproductive rights to present-day.

A dynamic installation featuring a large-scale projection of a human iris. The projection shows a model of a human eye magnified a thousand times. Water pool reflections and sound create the illusion of an underground dimension. The scale allows the audience to discover the detail within this micro world, which is part of each of us and determines the uniqueness of every single human being. The image moves according to the soundscape, creating the idea of a living, dynamic iris. Civic Hall, Cnr Mair & Doveton Streets
THE HYBRID SOCIETY CAKE INDUSTRIES (BALLARAT)
Strange human/machine hybrids will walk amongst us. A physical manifestation of the link between humans & technology, influencers & consumers, their obsession with their devices and themselves knows no bounds. These performing robotic sculptures use dark humour and absurdity to reflect and highlight the growing obsession with online personas and the technology that draws our attention from dawn to dusk. Roving through the precinct
THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO TO HURT ME SHOHEI OTOMO (JAPAN)
The body of a giant sumo wrestler, his face replaced with the emoji for anger, is covered with elaborate Yakuza-style tattoos depicting famous explosions from art, history and popular culture –from the Star Wars Death Star to Apocalypse Now and Dragon Ball Z. Appearing in Australia for only the second time, There Is Nothing You Can Do To Hurt Me reminds us that art is more powerful than any weapon. Black Box Theatre, Fed Uni Camp St campus
CHERUBIM ON A SUNDAY DRIVE THROUGH HELL BACONDRUM (BALLARAT)
A grotesque biblical allegory, in which seemingly innocent cherubs are seen going for a Sunday drive through hell, surrounded by a gaudy, manufactured Garden of Eden, blissfully ignorant of the man-made hell that surrounds them. Three multimedia installations commenting on humanity’s willful ignorance and lack of action regarding our casual relationship with burning fossil fuels and the resulting impending climate doom. Armstrong St South between Bath & Chancery Lanes

PICTURE HER BY MARG DOBSON
Presented at the Ballarat International Foto Biennale
Picture Her is a theatre performance about Australian women photographers presented through storytelling, music, song and images. The performance spotlights one of Ballarat’s first photographers, Daisy Harriet Llewelyn. Through tall tales and true stories, the performance pieces together available information about Llewelyn, adventuring through the happenstance, dead-ends, loose ends and unexpected bends.

Four young Aboriginal women who like singing country music suddenly get the chance to change their tune and their lives. Wearing sequins, armed only with microphones they find themselves trying to spread joy in the hell that is the Vietnam War. The Sapphires is a funny, heart-warming tale inspired by the true story of four Yorta Yorta Women, who sing classic soul hits against the backdrop of personal change and massive social upheaval. It is an energetic, fun and engaging play that affirms life and the realisation of dreams. Tix: hermaj.com

THE COMEDY OF ERRORS
Farce: a comic dramatic work using buffoonery and horseplay and typically including crude characterization and ludicrously improbable situations. Yep that’s it. Two sets of twins, a wife, a sister and a dad condemned to death and heaps of mistaken identity.
