Printmaker Marie Mason depicts landscapes around Victoria where she has lived or which she has visited, including Venus Bay, the Shepparton–Mooroopna area and the Murray River at Mildura. Using reduction linocut printing, she captures the essence of each place by seeing the patterns left by nature – flood damage, dry conditions, wind and storms, dust and shadows, fire damage – and recording how the landscape changes with the seasons.

DARYL LINDSAY: EN POINTE

The Ballets Russes are credited with inspiring a generation of Australians with the romance and exoticism of ballet. The company’s aesthetic – choreography, set and costume designs and music – influenced many artists including Max Dupain, Sidney Nolan and Norman Lindsay. In 1936 Daryl Lindsay, Norman Lindsay’s younger brother, was commissioned by The Herald newspaper to illustrate a series of articles by English writer Arnold Haskell about the company’s 1936–37 tour. The sketches were published in a monograph catalogue and were exhibited in the theatre foyers of the ballet performances in Melbourne and Sydney.
