Flynn’s work is photo-journalistic – each image a candid moment, captured without the subjects’ knowledge. Photographs show a transient moment – a pause in a narrative –allowing the viewer to imagine what had come before, and what may have followed. The Ballets Russes are credited with inspiring a generation of Australians with the romance and exoticism of ballet. The company’s aesthetic – choreography, set and costume designs and music – influenced many artists including Max Dupain, Sidney Nolan and Norman Lindsay. In 1936 Daryl Lindsay, Norman Lindsay’s younger brother, was commissioned by The Herald newspaper to illustrate a series of articles by English writer Arnold Haskell about the company’s 1936–37 tour. The sketches were published in a monograph catalogue and were exhibited in the theatre foyers of the ballet performances in Melbourne and Sydney.
