Pumpkin spice and everything nice!
We are always amazed by the number of people who enjoy fall so much that it’s part of their routine—from the annual mums and corn stalks purchase to the weekend’s apple picking and pumpkin day. And does running errands or coming home from work take a little longer now because you want to catch the colors?
This time of year, our appreciation for our homes grows as the temperature outside goes down. Maybe that’s why the Burlington Home section fits so nicely in our fall issue. This year, we checked in on The Painter owner Jeff Alexander. Speaking of colors, who doesn’t love to explore the possibilities inside and outside your home?
Our home also is the domain of a four-legged family member. So, we covered everything from bringing a pup into the home to making their space more comfortable as they grow older. Thanks to Ark Veterinary Hospital for their terrific insight.
And how about bringing the comforts of home to work? Hula Lakeside in Burlington is a treat! While popping in and out of the building for business, we were so struck with the sense of “home” that we feel that we included it as a spotlight.
Our gatherings in this issue are unique, focusing on Thanksgiving. This year, we asked our friends and business associates what the Thanksgiving gathering means to them.
Please enjoy this issue and the season.

This year we decided to do something a little different for our gatherings section. We asked some of our friends and business associates what Thanksgiving means to them. Here's what they told us. We hope you enjoy their thoughts on the holiday as much as we did.
JAKE CAIN: GREEN STATE KITCHENS & BATHS
Gatherings like Thanksgiving are a time to break away from the stressors of life and regain quality time with friends and family.
DEIDRE SENIOR: A LITTLE SOMETHING
Gatherings mean connection. Laughing, supporting, and enjoying time together.
SARAH LARSON: OTTER CREEK AWNINGS
Thanksgiving is a time to gather, reflect, and give gratitude for the simple joys in life.
CANDY & TIM KAVANAGH: WESTON DESIGN / SAMSON PRODUCTIONS
Gatherings are very intentional in our home. Creating tablescapes with heirloom pieces brings our beloveds back to our table and with it, much love and laughter ensues. Here’s to Tradition!
KEITH MCMANIS : THE ESSEX RESORT & SPA
Thanksgiving, to me, is a time for gathering, sharing gratitude, and creating cherished memories with loved ones.
VIRGINIA TOOHEY: NUCHOCOLAT
Giving thanks for life’s bounty. Family, friends, and of course—chocolate!
LARA HEATH: ECCO CLOTHES
Working in retail usually means working on the holidays! Thanksgiving is one of those special days of the year when the store is CLOSED —I can put my phone down and I get to enjoy spending time with my family.
GENA BOYDEN: CHEEKS LUXURY SKIN CLINIC
Thanksgiving is a time of gratitude for me. Each year I’m reminded of the family filled festive holidays of my childhood—My aunts
and mother busy cooking, delicious aromas coming from the kitchen. And all the kids busy playing, and laughing.
Now I’m a Gigi, busy cooking and creating memories for my family. And hoping this Thanksgiving fills them with gratitude in later years when they recall these magical days.
CHEF/OWNER HERVE MAHE: BISTRO DE MARGOT
Thanksgiving means time with Family and Friends around a table enjoying simple but important moments, enjoying a glass of wine, conversations, and catching up with people we do not see very often.

Thanksgiving Treats?
While you’re preparing and savoring your Thanksgiving feast, be aware that your canine pals should not partake. The stuffing most likely contains sage and other herbs, and the cinnamon, nutmeg, and other spices in sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie can cause stomach upset in your pooch. What about turkey? While you may find the golden skin of the bird delectable, the seasonings, butter, and salt it contains are not good for pets. But do feel free to give Rover a small bite of that juicy turkey breast. Yum!
Great Pumpkins
Pumpkin, both raw and canned, is safe for dogs, provided your pet is not suffering from a chronic condition such as kidney disease or diabetes. As far as our healthy pets go, seeds and flesh of fresh, raw, or cooked pumpkins are safe. If you choose to go with canned, make sure it doesn’t have added sugar or sweeteners. And don’t forget to roast pumpkin seeds in the oven for tasty dog treats.
Where Has My Lost Pet Gone?
An ASPCA survey of 1,000 pet owners found that 15 percent had lost a dog or a cat in the past five years, and that 74 percent of lost cats and 93 percent of lost dogs were recovered. Methods of recovery reported are:
• Forty-nine percent of dog owners found their dog by searching the neighborhood, and 15 percent of the dogs were recovered because they were wearing an ID tag or had a micro-chip.
• Fifty-nine percent of cat owners found their cat because it returned home on its own; 30 percent found their cat by searching the neighborhood.

Here, art is for everyone
Furchgott Sourdiffe Gallery is located in Shelburne, Vermont, about 15 minutes south of Burlington, and just a two-minute drive from the renowned Shelburne Museum and Shelburne Farms.
Lara Maloy runs the gallery, along with her partner Nico Sardet. Lara had worked alongside the original owners since 2005 before taking it over in 2020. She knows this space inside and out.
She really enjoys working with artists and art enthusiasts and is proud to play a role in supporting working artists by facilitating a sale between an artwork and art lover.
ART FOR EVERY OCCASION
Located in a renovated Queen Anne Victorian, this inviting space has been displaying eclectic works of art, while also providing custom framing and art restoration services, since 1991.

Experience Furchgott Sourdiffe Gallery
“This is an inviting space to visit. The building has been lovingly cared for and still has its original brightly colored, stained glass window accents—to which a young child recently exclaimed, “‘Ooh, look! Party windows!’ That just made my day,” said Lara with a smile.
Recognized by serious collectors for exceptional quality, diversity, and integrity, FS Gallery has an affordable selection for every budget. They are here for serious collectors and casual appreciators alike. Many visitors use the gallery like a museum to visit freely for inspiration, respite, friend dates, or education.
FS Gallery displays paintings, jewelry, sculptures, pottery, glass, and wood pieces, as well as textile/ fabric art in a relaxed, browser-friendly setting. The spaces include a gallery, a framing design room, and two workshop rooms on the main level, with three more galleries upstairs. All the works are for sale, and the styles and price points are diverse.
“It’s a great pleasure to be able to continue offering this gallery space to visitors of all kinds. We like the atmosphere to be casual and easy. Art is for everyone,” Lara said.

DIVERSE WORKS DISPLAYED
FS Gallery generally holds one special exhibit in the main gallery room upstairs while continuing to show ongoing works from their other artists throughout the rest of the gallery. They have works by Miriam Adams, David Smith, Barbara Wagner, and many more on display.
Their current special exhibit began Sept. 15, showcasing the oil paintings of Joseph Salerno. This exhibit shows a great range of his work, including architectural, landscapes, and still life paintings. Titled “Inside & Out: Landscapes to Relics,” the exhibit will run until Nov. 4, 2023.
OTHER SERVICES OFFERED
Custom framing and restoration services are an integral part of FS Gallery. Loyal clients return year after year, often traveling considerable distances because of its earned reputation for quality, attention to detail, and dedicated customer service.
FS Gallery can create any type of natural wood frame to match any art with their unique selection of mouldings for every budget. They have a diverse selection of frames for paintings, documents, photographs, objects, posters, drawings, and more with any style, any color, or any tone you can imagine.
“It’s very satisfying to see a piece come to life by giving it the right showcase. Our focus is on conservation framing, which means that we use archival materials that will protect the artwork or items and is fully reversible,” Lara said.
LET US SERVE YOU. WWW.FINCATERING.COM follow us at @FINCATERINGVT BURLINGTON, VT & BEYOND
In addition to their frame and object restoration service, the gallery works with two notable conservators of oil paintings and works on paper.
Lara loves how the framing work unites the creative, design side of the brain with the practical, methodical, and detail-oriented side. The work is both physical and artful. There are a lot of combined elements when working with your hands to create a finished framework.
Designing the framing with the client and hearing stories about the items being framed can be a fun and sometimes intimate exploration. She enjoys this process as much as she enjoys sharing artwork with visitors. Everyone is welcome.
“We encourage every type of visit. We want to provide an experience where people can familiarize themselves with the art in a comfortable setting. That’s how you come to realize how much original art can enhance your daily life at home or at work.”

AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT
It’s a love story, a family drama, a comedy, and a modern odyssey all rolled into one. And it’s a 180-degree shift from Tom Reed’s first novel, which is one reason he said it was so fun to write.
“On a very simple level, it’s something I enjoy doing—offering some kind of emotional experience for people,” he said.
Tom’s debut novel Seeking Hyde drew from his academic research as an English literature professor and Chaucerian at Dickinson
College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Eventually, the New Hampshire native got into Victorian fiction, which inspired his first novel, on the origins and impact of Robert Louis Stevenson’s epic horror story, Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
“It was really delightful, after spending a career analyzing other people’s writing, to actually put something together that was based largely on Stevenson’s biography and Victorian history, and to churn something out,” he said.
And it felt so good to publish his first piece that he was inspired to write another—albeit quite different—novel.
Pocketful of Poseys centers around a dysfunctional family and their free-spirited mother. After their father’s death, the matriarch is diagnosed with Parkinson’s and chooses to stop eating. While in hospice, she
is inspired to treat her family to a unique experience. When she dies, the family discovers she has funded a worldwide trip where they will spread their parents’ ashes in meaningful destinations: New Zealand, Italy, Switzerland, and a New Jersey turnpike rest stop.
Of course, the excursion is more than an amazing trip and leads to quality time, uncovering family secrets, greater compassion, and forgiveness.
“It’s very loosely based on my mother-inlaw’s experience. After she lost her husband, she started developing symptoms of some degenerative neurological disease. She felt as though her body told her it’s time to move on,” Tom said.
In Tom’s case, his mother-in-law graciously funded a vacation for the family to enjoy together. The Christmas
FALL 2023 | Best of Burlington | 37
New Hampshire author’s book takes readers through an emotional experience
following her passing, they took a trip to Antigua.
Although the roots of Tom’s story are based in reality, he clarified that his mother-in-law and main character are quite different people. The story’s matriarch has a complicated history, but Tom said, “The theme of the book—the blessing of honesty—is that the way of being honest is a form of love.”
And other pieces of the novel ring true. The sibling issues touched on in the book echo Tom’s reality, while the locations were chosen from vacations he enjoyed with his family.
“I sort of think of a work of art as crystal, it kind of grows from materials that come out of your life, but when you put it into a pot, it starts to structure itself from its own internal logic. It becomes the thing
Put Your Feet UP.
it was meant to be, not the thing that you took it from.”
Tom describes Pocketful of Poseys as a dark comedy that’s also reverent. Those who have reviewed the book call it comical, heart wrenching, and emotional. “It has deep seriousness and the haphazardness of life,” he said. “You think of tragedy and comedy and people crying and laughing. It felt like a full, ample combination of things to put out there and just represent the kind of balance of life. …We’re all everyday either moving toward tears or laughter.”
Ultimately, Tom hopes readers find the book an enjoyable and casual experience. But he also shares that it’s a book about how “with time and the inclination to get to a better place, people can do that.”
Writing the book even moved Tom to fulfill some family wishes. The ashes of his mother, father, and sister were sitting on his bookshelf. While gearing up for publication, he put the ashes in the ground.
“That’s what art does,” Tom said. “It’s a place where the substance of what you’re doing comes from something personal. And if you find the right shape for it as a work of art, you’re probably finding a happy psychological or spiritual shape as well.”
So what’s next? Tom has some ideas for his next novel. And who knows, he and his wife might commission their children to take their own Posey trip. “Now, there would really be a book!”

Green State Kitchens & Baths offers tips on upgrading your kitchen and bathroom
Are you thinking about renovating your kitchen or bathroom, a project you’ve been putting off because you expect it to be a major hassle? Green State Kitchens & Baths, a division of Green State Builders in Essex Junction, will come to the rescue! Learn how the only onestop builder/contractor/dealer in Vermont handles all your renovation needs, along with offering tips on what’s trending in kitchen and bathroom design.
We sat down with Jake Cain, carpenter and co-owner of Green State Builders, to learn more about his tools of the trade and to get his take on what’s trending in the

industry. A general contractor with 20 years of experience in residential and commercial construction, he has plenty of experience and knowledge to share.
A SUCCESSFUL BEGINNING
Jake began his carpentry career more than two decades ago working for various contractors, then operating his own business for 13 years. Jake joined forces with Willie Kinley, co-owner of Green State Builders, and said, “We had always worked together for other companies and finally decided to team up. Willie is certified in just about everything and has been a master plumber for eight years.”

A rustic 1800s historic home goes back to its roots with warm tones and a double island.
Willie brings diversity along with his vast expertise to Green State Builders.
“Our model for the new company is to be very focused on the client,” Jake said. “We’re not like large construction companies that take as many jobs as they can and then spread themselves too thin. We also wanted to do everything—carpentry, plumbing, electrical, project management and design—in-house.”
Formed in 2017, the company quickly grew, from taking on a single job to being booked for two years within just a few months, earning a stellar reputation along the way. “But then Covid hit,” Jake explained, “along with a huge supply chain problem.”
The solution? “We started our own showroom. We had a lot on our shoulders, but it was good to have control over the total job. The company took off, moving from Jake’s house in Colchester to 6000 square feet of space in a 200-year-old postand-beam building built in the 1800s. In addition to the showroom, which represents three cabinetry lines, the pair began buying inventory, soon having as much as 20,000 square feet. “As a result, we had much better lead times and don’t have to worry about price increases,” Jake said proudly.

What puts Green State Builders in a class by itself is that it provides in-house design and start-to-finish construction, as well as maintains licensed plumbers and electricians on its staff. That means that when you begin your kitchen or bath renovation project, you don’t have to worry about hiring a separate interior designer, architect, and contractor. As Jake explained, “We provide complete support throughout all aspects of the design, planning, and the building process, from cabinetry, countertops, plumbing, and electrical fixtures, and even hardware and other finishes. Our goal is to provide the absolute best finished product, in the most efficient and cost-effective way.”

flooring, plumbing, electrical, painting, and finishing, to appliance installation and service work. Having the total package on-site allows them to work as a team, accomplishing their client’s goals in a fraction of the time of their competitors.
HOT KITCHEN TRENDS
When asked what’s trending in kitchen design, Jakes responded, “We’re seeing old styles coming back, such as pastel colors, dated tiles, and Mid-century modern cabinetry with flat panels. Finished walnut and cherry are popular, as well as strong colors such as green, blue, and matte black.”
He added, “Things we saw in the industry like wallpaper 20 to 30 years ago have made a comeback.”
One kitchen project that stands out in Jake’s mind features neon red and orange colors along with black countertops and hardware for a cool, modern look. He is especially proud of his showcase kitchen in a fully restored farmhouse with exposed beams, which was designed in-house by staff designers. “We

ordered hand-hewn 12-by-12 solid wood beams from Ohio, and spent two weeks just honing them out to shed weight. We used the largest one to encapsulate a steel beam, with ten others coming off it for aesthetics.”
BATHROOM TRENDS TO NOTE
As for bathrooms, Jake shared, “Right now everyone is ditching their bathtubs in favor of custom tile showers. What’s particularly hot are large-format showers.” He said that Dekton is the brand of choice. “It comes in giant slabs that are only 1/8-inch thick. It’s like porcelain, but its web backing adds strength while allowing the slabs to be very thin. We can do entire showers in one piece. It has a natural stone look but is super durable.”
Also “in” right now are smaller details such as chrome, brass, and gold finishes. “They were popular 40 years ago and then practically disappeared off the face of the earth,” Jake said.
CONTRACTORS AS CLIENTS
In addition to attracting customers from all over the state, Green State Kitchen & Bath has added other contractors to its long list of satisfied clients. Jake said, “This is because more and more builders come to us because we do so much more than other cabinet companies. We can offer detailed drawing and project management all the way through. We create a package for the builder, and everything is here waiting for them.”
Jake’s biggest goal? “We want to appeal to even more contractors. We offer a lot more support through the whole process, from start to finish.”

Preparing your home
for your pet
Ark Veterinary Hospital helps you welcome your new dog or assist your elderly one
You might have recently welcomed a furry friend into your home or are considering getting a new puppy or rescue dog. Whether you’re a first-time dog owner or a seasoned pro with an older pet, there’s always something new to learn about creating a safe and comfortable environment for your four-legged family member.
For those with senior dogs, the journey can be particularly challenging as you adapt to their changing needs. For some expert advice on preparing your home to ensure your pet remains happy and safe, we turned to Andrew Koenitzer, the chief of staff at Ark Veterinary Hospital in Shelburne.
PRIORITIZING QUALITY CARE
Ark Veterinary Hospital prioritizes wellness and preventative medical care while offering a wide range of specialties, including surgery, dermatology, internal medicine, ultrasound, and dentistry. Andrew, who previously worked at a high-volume veterinary clinic in a large city, relishes Ark’s client-focused approach. Regardless of an owner’s choice of treatment

or financial constraints, Ark’s primary focus is on full-service, comprehensive pet care, from routine vaccinations to surgical procedures.
“I am proud of our clinic. It provides high-quality diagnostic medicine,” he said. “We have a team of veterinarians with diverse specialties and are always trying to move into the future in stride with the ever-changing landscape of medicine. I am trained in ultrasound and a wide range of soft tissue surgery with an interest in oral surgery. We are also excited to announce one of our vets, Dr. Morika Ogawa, finished training and started to offer acupuncture for our chronic pain patients dealing with back or arthritic discomfort.”
He believes this is a great addition to the practice, especially for those animals starting to slow down or show signs of consistent discomfort at home.
Offering a range of treatments for chronic disease from medical, surgical, holistic, or dietary,

is also important. Andrew added, “We also have a veterinarian with a special interest in end-of-life and hospice care. Our approach is collaborative, with a shared commitment to providing the best care possible for our clients.” As a result, patients are not assigned to one doctor, but rather to the whole team, to manage their unique individual care.
PREPPING THE HOUSE
Before bringing a new dog into your home, or if you’re adjusting your living space for a senior dog, safety and well-being should be your top priorities. Andrew offers valuable advice on how to create a pet-friendly environment.
“Choose a safe feeding and resting area,” he said. “I recommend a clean, quiet area for your pet’s food and water bowls.” He explained that having a designated space for eating and resting can help your dog feel secure and comfortable.
“For first-time owners,” Andrew said, “make sure you have all the necessary supplies, including bowls, a comfortable bed, grooming tools, toys, a collar with identification tags, a leash, and, if applicable, a crate for training purposes.”
Next, pet-proof your home. Be aware of potential hazards such as pest poisons, toxic cleaning products, and even chewing gum and foods with artificial sweeteners. Make sure foods are not within reach, but rather stored in cupboards. Check that your house plants aren’t dangerous. According to Andrew, the ASPCA provides a helpful list of plants that can be toxic to pets.
“It’s essential to have cleanable surfaces, especially where you are feeding your pet,” Andrew said. He also recommends designing your mudroom to accommodate your dog, providing a place to clean him off before he enters the house.
And finally, stairs and any slick floor surfaces should be covered with rugs, carpet tiles, or even yoga mats so your puppy can keep his feet under him or your senior dog doesn’t slip or fall.
CREATING SAFE OUTDOOR SPACES
Outdoor spaces offer a haven for your dog to play and explore, but they require thoughtful planning, too. Andrew shared insights
FALL 2023 | Best of Burlington | 53
on maintaining a safe and enjoyable outdoor environment:
FENCED-IN AREAS: Consider fencing in your outdoor space to provide a safe, enclosed area for your dog to roam. The type of fence you choose depends on your dog’s size and temperament. Invisible or electronic fences can be effective, but are best introduced to puppies at least six months of age for proper training and setup.
REGULAR CLEAN-UP: Consistently clean up your outdoor space to prevent parasites and keep it safe for both your pet and family members. Be mindful of what you’re growing in your garden, as some plants, like lilies, can be toxic to pets.
ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES: If your dog has specific behaviors, like digging or repetitive laps, consider making changes in your yard to create an enrichment area. Providing space for these activities such as a digging pit can keep your pet mentally and physically stimulated.
PROVIDING A SAFE ENVIRONMENT FOR SENIOR PETS
Caring for an aging dog presents unique challenges. Andrew offered practical tips for modifying your home to the comfort and well-being of your senior companion. “It’s especially important to know your dog’s limits,” he cautioned.
MOBILITY CONSIDERATIONS: Older dogs may experience mobility issues. Ensure your home is accessible by providing good grip on stairs,
54 | www.bestofburlingtonvt.com
Some of the patients at Ark will always be a little skeptical. The caring and professional staff take into consideration how to interact with your pet with anxiousness or any other unique traits.
ramps for easier access, and rugs or carpets to improve your dog’s footing. Introduce baby gates around high-risk areas.
CONSISTENCY IS KEY: Senior dogs often experience decline in their vision. Dogs rely on their noses more than their eyes, so maintaining a consistent environment can help them navigate their surroundings. Be cautious of stair-related risks and provide a familiar path. You may not want to rearrange furniture or bring a new piece into your dog’s regular space.
COGNITIVE DYSFUNCTION SYNDROME (CDS): Cognitive decline, similar to Alzheimer’s Disease in humans, can affect older dogs, causing them to exhibit abnormal behaviors. Creating a known and consistent environment can help alleviate confusion. Andrew suggested providing a designated “home base,” such as a supportive bed or a specific area of the home. “And be aware of worsening eyesight when letting your animals out for the last bathroom break at night,” he added.
REGULAR VETERINARY CHECK-UPS
As a cherished member of your family, deserving of the best care and a comfortable home, your dog should have regular veterinary check-ups, Andrew said. “Continual monitoring of your senior dog’s health is essential. Schedule one to two yearly exams and closely monitor his body condition and bloodwork. Maintaining a supportive environment and addressing age-related issues promptly are crucial.” Through this type of ongoing care, the hospital is better able to create the best approach for your animal as well as for you and your home.
Whether you’re welcoming a new pup into your family or adjusting your home for an aging companion, careful planning and attention to your pet’s needs are paramount. With guidance from experts like Andrew Koenitzer and the dedicated team at Ark Veterinary Hospital, you can create a safe and comfortable home that ensures the well-being of your furry friend throughout his life journey.

FINDING A GREAT PAINTER ISN’T EASY—WE GOT A GUY
KNOW YOUR PAINTER
Jeff doesn’t get to do the actual painting much these days, due to the growth and success of his company but he’s very particular about who he hires. His company is one of the few members of the Paint Contractors Association (PCA) in Vermont.
“It’s important to ask painters about their training process and standards,” Jeff said. “All of my employees are trained according to PCA standards and must pass multiple tests before receiving a certificate for completion in both interior and exterior.”
Recently, The Painter opened a store in South Burlington, focusing on cabinet painting and refinishing. They are currently working on a showroom to display their paint and coating options. They showcase Benjamin Moore paint for most interiors and exteriors, while Farrow and Ball or Fine Paints of Europe are used for high-end jobs. For cabinet refinishing, Jeff uses his favorite Milesi Coatings, an Italian company.
CHOOSE YOUR COLORS
Painting and remodeling projects flow in trends. Jeff said off-white and gray colors for interior walls are in. And so is wallpaper, which is in high demand. He has also seen popularity grow for high-gloss walls in powder rooms.
As for exteriors, blues, grays, and whites are the popular house colors with the front door being painted a bright accent color. Jeff loves the contrast and appreciates how the combination really brings the house color together.
It is always good for a customer and painting company to be up to date and know what’s on trends, but with that being said, he thinks following your vision is more important than trends. If a client has it in their heart to go bold with a color that they love, then he is going to make it work.

ASK THE RIGHT QUESTIONS
When asked about mistakes to avoid heading into a painting project, he said that adequate preparation work is key. Proper and thorough scraping, sanding, priming, and avoiding inexpensive paint are all basic necessities for a great paint job.
His company offers dust-free sanding. Their sanding is done with dust extractors to keep the customer’s home clean. And they always clean up after themselves. If you didn’t know, sanding is a very important part of a successful paint job.
“A professional painter should have both knowledge and experience in coatings and the work the client is asking them to perform.”
Jeff encourages customers to ask questions and make sure their painter can and will walk them through their process “from setup to cleanup, from start to finish.” He stresses that a painter’s understanding of what coatings are best for a job is essential.
“Don’t be afraid to ask to see their work. Most of us have social media for potential clients to see past projects, as well as online reviews.”
Lastly, you should get something in writing from the painter, contractor, or company. There should be at least a basic contract with

terms and conditions on it to protect yourself from any confusion or disagreement after the project is finished.
Jeff’s recommendations for any painting remodel is to use high-quality primer and paint. Put up sample colors in the room that you are thinking about having painted, and try to limit it to 3 or 4 samples per color. Keep your painting budget in mind, as well. And always properly prepare and clean the surfaces.
Jeff is happy to discuss any cabinet, interior, or exterior project. You can visit him at his store in South Burlington or you can visit his website www.thepaintervt.co for more information.

Vermont Furniture Designs is as #ShopLocal as it gets. This well-known, heirloom furniture company in Winooski, Vermont, is owned by two talented woodworkers from the Green Mountain State. Their company has been providing the Burlington area with their stunning furniture for decades.
In this era of one-click, mass-produced buys and cheap, click-together furniture,
Vermont Furniture Designs prides itself on building solid hardwood furniture that delivers custom quality without the custom price. The high-quality craftsmanship used in all of their products is really a work of art.
LEARNING THE TRADE
Their business has stood strong through all the ups and downs from these unpredictable last
few years because their handcrafted furniture continues to be in high demand.
Vermont Furniture Designs has been making beautiful, hand-crafted furniture since 1970 and the owners, Rob Bachand and Adam Blaisdell, have over six decades of experience between them.
They learned the craft of making highquality furniture from the original owner.

They love what they do, and they love transforming pieces of wood into beautiful pieces of art.
Vermont Furniture Designs offers 10 separate and different furniture lines that span everything from classic Mission and Shaker styles to Mid-Century modern.
They also love making one-off, custom pieces for customers. A custom piece usually takes between 6 to 8 weeks to make and can be made with Cherry, Walnut, or Maple wood. They are up for any challenge, any design, and are very versatile.
FROM CLASSIC TO CUSTOM
While their furniture lines stay constant, they regularly create unique pieces to add to these lines. These experimental pieces are promptly put on display in their showroom at 4 Tigan St.

One thing that makes them unique is that every piece of furniture or wooden accessory they sell is built on-site. There is no off-site production, and they spare no expense to make sure their customers have a beautiful, functional, timeless piece of furniture that they can be proud to hand down through generations of the family.

Open tenons draw attention to the woodworking of a piece by showing how the pieces fit together geometrically.
“Open tenons is a style we have been thinking about bringing to life here,” Adam said, “for our more traditional furniture lovers.”
These days, people have been spending their hard-earned money on experiences and timeless heirlooms with meaning. And that’s what makes Vermont Furniture Designs so special: Beautiful heirloom furniture that will last for generations with the experience of designing it yourself.

A family favorite for cozy winter enjoyment
THE HEALTH BENEFITS ARE AN ADDED BONUS
During a home renovation, a New England family wanted their master suite bathroom to feel like a spa retreat. These ski lovers aimed to recreate the cozy culture of winter with a sauna. This addition to their home achieved this goal, and the sauna become a family favorite. It also provided health benefits for homeowner Lauren, who said the sauna became a great tool to relieve her bad asthma.
DESIGNING AROUND A SAUNA
“We recently did a massive renovation of our home, which included a master suite,” Lauren said. “We really wanted the bathroom to feel like a spa, so it needed a sauna.”
To Lauren and their family, this was the No. 1 splurge. As they worked with an architect to determine the layout and flow of the suite, they sent the dimensions to the local bath and hardware dealer. They created a space and answered questions from the contractor about installation, plumbing, lighting, and more.
ENJOYING UNIQUE FEATURES
On a practical level, the family benefited from the dry heat the sauna provided.

When she was young, Lauren frequently had asthma attacks. She learned a sauna could help to open up her airways. “As I got older, I learned to enjoy the whole experience of breathing in the dry heat and sweating out my toxins,” she said.
Aesthetically, the sauna features a beautiful rock display and creates a calming steam. “We
love the volcanic rocks,” Lauren said. “They are beautiful, and when you pour water over them the steam releases the aromas of the Cedar sauna. It smells incredible and is just another great sensory experience to help us unwind.”
She added, “We also have three little girls, but only had a small space for the sauna. (Our dealer) did a great job creating a space that was cozy, but also big enough to get our entire family space to heat up Apres Ski.”
And possibly the best surprise? “Each member of my family chooses a different color to help them relax in the sauna,” she said. “I prefer blue, my daughters enjoy the pink setting, and my husband prefers green.”
EMBRACING THE BENEFITS
Although some people might choose to install luxury items like a sauna for resale value, Lauren said they use theirs regularly. “The kids use it every weekend after playing in the cold,” she said.
After a morning workout, her husband uses it to stretch, and Lauren enjoys her time in the sauna before bed. It’s a perfect time to unwind, unplug, and destress.
Lauren and her family couldn’t be happier with the results of their sauna, its design, the materials, and the handy mobile app. “Our sauna turned out way better than we

The SaunaLogic2 Control and mobile app can even heat up the sauna from a phone so it’s ready when it’s time to unwind.
Lauren said the user-friendly sauna would make a great addition to anyone’s bathroom. This and any other luxury bath and hardware needs can be found at Close to Home. “I would definitely recommend this Amerec sauna product,” she said. “We actually look forward to extreme cold days, so we warm up in our sauna and sit by our fire. homes for over 45 years. They were founded in 1982. After being acquired by JH Dunning Corp in 2018, they moved their operations from Westminster, Vermont, to North Walpole, New Hampshire in 2019.
OPEN TO ANY PROJECT
For Vermont Cabinetry, nothing is off limits. They provide custom cabinetry and millwork for the entire home.
“We can do kitchens, bath vanities, pantries, bars, mudrooms, closets, libraries, and laundry rooms,” said owner Todd Walker. “No project
is too large or too small.”
You can choose from nearly any species of wood, and select a variety of finishes, such as natural or painted.
WHAT’S ON TREND
What’s trending in cabinetry these days? Todd said that painted cabinets are dropping in popularity.
“Painted framed inset cabinetry was popular the past few years,” Todd explained. “But there is now a definite move toward natural wood with frameless overlay cabinetry.”

Todd also said that people are moving toward darker woods like mahogany, walnut, and even stained maples and cherry.
Todd added that wooden countertops are gaining interest, as well. And the crew at Vermont Cabinetry has the ability to
design and build those, while many cabinet manufacturers do not offer them.
UNIQUE, DURABLE AND CUSTOMER FOCUSED
Why else should you choose to work with Vermont Custom Cabinetry over their
competitors? Todd said there are plenty of reasons.
“Solid wood 3/4-inch box construction, northern maple used for painted doors and panels, or solid wood of your choice for stained or natural wood selections to name a few.” He said.
Plus, all of their pieces are durable and finished with a low VOC emitting poly finish coating, making them resistant to moisture and UV effects.
Everything they construct is made at their 60,000-square-foot facility in North Walpole and custom made to the exact specification of their customer’s choice and design. Plus, their commitment to providing prompt turnaround of price quotes, along with very reasonable lead times for production and delivery, makes them the perfect partner for all of your home projects.

GO NATURAL
Incorporating natural elements into the design of your home or workspace will help you feel more connected to nature and recharge your energy. Think of incorporating natural materials such as wood, stone, and plants into your design.
Another growing trend is biophilic design: an approach to designing spaces that connects people to nature and creates a sense of well-being. This can be done by adding elements such as water features, skylights, windows, and other sources of natural light, and plants throughout the space.
COLOR YOUR MIND

Kerri is originally from Massachusetts, but she went to school in Maine and considers that her second home. She’s spent the past 40 years consulting for small and midsize companies, helping them accelerate growth and maximize value.
She said she wanted to buy a business in New England, and when she came upon Inspired Closets Vermont, she knew it was the right choice. First of all, she loved that it’s in Vermont. She’s an avid hiker committed to staying in New England, so the location was a plus. More importantly, she said it just felt like it was a good fit.

Opposite: Organize your pantry space the way you want to access everything.
Above: Maximize space—use the whole wall and put everything in its place.
Left: Expand the usefulness of your laundry room.
“I’ve always been an organized person,” Kerri said. “And the idea that I could be on the other side of the table, to deliver the same results and satisfaction that I’ve experienced, it just made sense buying this particular business.”
Kerri hopes to apply her expertise in business growth to her own company. She’s already gotten started, expanding advertising for Inspired Closets Vermont to target new areas, reaching down to the Massachusetts border.
INSPIRING DESIGNS
At Inspired Closets Vermont, their installers’ goal is to complete each project in one day; larger projects may take longer.
“These are experts who help bring order and inspiration to every home. We want to collaborate with our clients,” Kerri said.
Another positive to Inspired Closets Vermont’s business model is that they’re upfront about all costs you might encounter. Rather than giving a generalized quote for the design, the designers communicate immediately about what

customization and alterations might cost you. For instance, if you’d rather go with a different color finish, door style, or accessories, they’ll be able to show what it will look like with the computer model right away, and let you know what the total price will be with your new requests.
Once the design is finished and approved, Inspired Closets Vermont will work with you to schedule your installation.
SATISFYING CUSTOMERS
Kerri said there’s a lot to love about her new position: “The problems that we’re helping clients solve, the ease that we’re giving them, the enjoyment of their homes. They don’t have to move to get the space they need. I mean, that’s great satisfaction right there.”
When they check with clients right after the installation, the responses are astounding. What really delights her, though, is following up with them years later and knowing that they’re still just as thrilled with their redesigned space as when it was first installed.
“It is so fulfilling when you know what you’re delivering is at that high level,” Kerri said. “But when the customers come back long after saying the exact same thing, it’s a great confirmation.”

TOOLS THAT PROVIDE HOMEOWNERS WITH PEACE OF MIND
From a simple sign to hi-tech systems, homeowners have a range of options when it comes to securing their property. Chittenden County, Vermont, like many other regions, has experienced an evolution in home security options, ranging from traditional security measures to modern tech-integrated systems.
SECURITY OPTIONS FROM SIMPLE TO HI-TECH
KEEPING IT SIMPLE
Home security doesn’t have to be involved or expensive. If you’re looking to deter trouble, sometimes a simple sign does the trick. A visible yard sign or decals on your windows indicating that the property is monitored or protected can deter potential intruders. They might think twice if they know the home has a security system in place.
Another common and relatively easy way to prevent crime around your home is to start a local neighborhood watch program. Engaging with the community and forming or joining a neighborhood watch can be an effective deterrent. A united community is often a safer one.
TRADITIONAL OPTIONS
Investing in a security system often mean choosing a traditional alarm system: These are the wired or wireless systems that trigger alarms when a door or window is breached. Local companies, such as Vermont Security,
offer comprehensive home security solutions that include monitoring services.
It also is common for homeowners to use surveillance cameras. A range of cameras, from simple motion-triggered devices to 24/7 recording systems with night vision, are available. Many modern cameras can also link to your smartphone, allowing for real-time viewing.
Motion sensors and outdoor lighting also have been used for years in home security. Installing motion-activated lights around the property can deter potential intruders. The sudden illumination can spook unwanted visitors and provide added visibility for cameras.
GOING HI-TECH
With a home automation system, smart homes can connect lighting, heating, locks, and alarms in one convenient place. Controlled via smartphones or tablets, they allow homeowners to create the appearance of an occupied home even when they’re away.
FALL 2023 | Best of Burlington | 79 BURLINGTONhome
Devices like the Ring or Nest doorbell also allow homeowners to see and communicate with whomever is at their door, regardless of where they are. This not only helps with security but is a convenient tool.
HEAVY-DUTY OPTIONS
There are options available to homeowners who feel that they need some serious security in place. Reinforced windows and door frames make it harder for intruders to gain access. Window security film can also prevent glass from shattering easily.
For those particularly concerned about safety, creating a safe room—a fortified room with reinforced walls and doors—can be a last line of defense against intruders.
And biometric locks are an advanced tool that use fingerprints or retina scans, which are becoming more affordable and accessible. These ensure that only authorized individuals can gain access.
OTHER OPTIONS
Beyond intruders, fire, CO2, and flood sensors can protect homeowners from environmental threats. Vermont’s winters can sometimes lead to frozen pipes. Thankfully, having sensors can notify homeowners of potential floods if those pipes burst.
It also can be beneficial to get a professional’s perspective. By hiring a local security consultant, you can evaluate the home and provide tailored recommendations based on the property’s specific vulnerabilities.
For Chittenden County residents, it might be useful to visit local home improvement stores or attend home and garden exhibitions, as these opportunities often feature the latest in home security technology and solutions. Plus, staying updated with local crime trends and working closely with local law enforcement can provide additional insights into how best to protect one’s home.
