Happy Fall Everyone!
Over the Summer, we grabbed some space at the St. Louis Bourbon Society’s Bourbon and Brew Fest in Cottleville. What a blast! If you want to know what the Missouri Craft scene is about, please go to a festival that includes local craft beers, spirits, and wines. The stories you hear, the people you meet; you can see people just enjoying each others company. If you see us at an event, come by and say hi. We’d love to meet you.
Speaking of people to meet and stories to tell, this issue is full of both! There’s the tiger sanctuary in Ste. Genevieve: Crown Ridge Tiger Sanctuary. So between a tasting from one of the many wineries or breweries in Ste. Genevieve, you can discover these incredible cats while helping protect them.
We spotlight a couple breweries too. I was in Kansas City and heard about Transparent Brewing opening up in Grandview awhile back. We met Nolan, his family and the staff. Check it out in the KC Metro section. Also in the KC section we popped in on our friends at Double Shift in the Crossroads. They are always putting out some tasty things there!
There’s a small Nano-brewery that’s doing things in Hannibal called Great River Brewing, and how can you not visit Springfield without a visit to Tie and Timber. Delicious!
In St. Louis Metro, Blueberry Hill celebrates 50 years, and since it’s fall, check out Brick River Cider!
Thank you everyone for allowing us to show you the Missouri Craft Scene!
Cheers!

Missouri Wine Competition
We are excited to announce the results of this year’s Missouri Wine Competition! For more than three decades this renowned competition has recognized the highest quality wines the Show Me State has to offer. More than 235 wines representing all regions of Missouri wine country were entered into this esteemed evaluation.
A panel of seven expert judges spent two days blind tasting and evaluating the wines entered. Those that received a gold medal distinction went head-to-head for the honor of a Best of Class award in their respective category. The top wines then competed for the ultimate recognition: the coveted Governor’s Cup award. The Governor’s Cup is presented to the best wine in the state. Join us in congratulating this year’s Best of Class winners:
• Sparkling: Stone Hill Winery – Brut Rosé
• Dry White: Noboleis Vineyards – 2021 Dry Vignoles
• Semi-Dry White: Augusta Winery – 2021 Vidal Blanc Estate Bottled
• Sweet White: Augusta Winery – 2021 Vignoles
• Dry Red: Stone Hill Winery – 2020 Chambourcin
• Semi-Dry Red: Adam Puchta Winery – Hunter’s Red
• Sweet Red: St. James Winery – Velvet Red
• Dry Rosé: Noboleis Vineyards – 2021 Dry Rosé
• Sweet Rosé: Augusta Vineyards – River Valley Blush
• Fruit: Adam Puchta Winery – Berry Black
• Dessert: Adam Puchta Winery – Signature Port
• Late Harvest/Ice Wine: Augusta Winery – 2021 Icewine
The winner of the 2022 Governor’s Cup is Stone Hill Winery’s 2020 Chambourcin, a dry red wine that thoroughly impressed the judging panel. The C.V. Riley Award for best Norton went to two wineries for their 2020 Norton wines: Stone Hill Winery and Les Bourgeois Vineyards on The Blufftop at Rocheport. The C.V. Riley award is a special recognition that honors the official state grape and bears the name of the first state entomologist, who is credited with helping save the French wine industry. https://missouriwine.org/news/2022missouri-wine-competition-winners-announced

When Autumn Leaves Begin to Fall… Three MO Festivals
It's fall festival season! The weather is still inviting, and there's plenty to do besides college football and end-ofseason yard work. After all, there is a lot to be celebrated—apples, pumpkins, costumes, German culture, and... grapes? Yes, grapes. The streets are lined with food and craft booths, plus there is a Beer and Wine Garden, The Craftsman's Village, and a Kid Zone, offering games and a petting zoo. The main event of the day is The Grape Stomp, where teams compete for the traveling Ugly Monkey trophy, cash, and other prizes. Creative costumes and theme music are encouraged. Pre-registration is required for stompers in an adult and children's category. For more information, visit www.hollisterchamber.net

PEELING BACK THE LAYERS OF CIDER WITH BRICK RIVER CIDER COMPANY
BrickRiver is putting cider back on the map in Missouri. It's hard to miss St. Louis' first craft cidery, which now occupies an awe-inspiring, repurposed former firehouse located at 2000 Washington Ave. Once inside, it quickly becomes clear you're not in the 1800s anymore. The polished, industrial feel of the taproom lends itself to a casual atmosphere featuring music and plenty of TVs for entertainment. It
further boasts a glass wall behind the bar, allowing customers a sneak peek into the impressive cider operation.
OUT OF THE NORM
To the unsuspecting eye, Brick River could be mistaken for a brewery, but after closer inspection, you'll discover what makes the destination adored by locals. Opened in 2018, founder and owner Russ John sought to bring a slice of family tra-
dition in a fresh, new way. One could argue that Russ knows a thing or two about cider making: his family-owned farm and orchard date back generations after all.
Brick River's craft ciders have earned the location a well-earned reputation as the local cider experts of the region, with canning operations in-house and readily available local cider lining store shelves across the region through their distribution channels.
14 • BREWVIEW MISSOURI • 2022 Issue 3 BY
CRAFTING QUALITY
What makes a cider “craft”? If you ask Russ, it means it was made the old fashioned way. This means starting with fresh-pressed, never from concentrate apple juice. If you examine the national competitors closely, you may be surprised to find all cider is not created equal. After all, it's much more efficient and affordable to bulk-ship dense blocks of questionable quality, condensed apple to simply be mixed with tap water.
Brick River crafts cider from freshpressed juice from apples grown less than 500 miles away. This gives the cider a better taste and one that has the feeling of the region and ensures the best results every time.
PERFECT PAIRINGS
Herbs, flowers, and fresh fruit are the best pairings for cider, not lab-created flavorings dumped in by the ladleful.
By focusing on fresh fruit and quality ingredients, Brick River Cider Co. can pro duce not only traditional favorites like the ultra-popular flagships Homestead and Cornerstone, but some far-out taproom exclusives, such as Mission Mango, a unique collaboration with Mission Taco Joint. An apple cider with sweet mango and a warm chili finish, anyone? As wine and beer have grown to cater to all taste ranges, there is no exception in St. Louis. Ciders range from dry, tart, sweet, spiced, and a depth of range in between. Unfortunately, mass-produced cider from domestic brew-giants still largely control the national narrative and general understanding of what America thinks cider should be. Brick River aims to change that by crafting delicate and bold taste profiles, creating complementary flavors from local seasonal ingredients instead of simply brewing what's on trend.
MORE THAN A CIDERY
Brick River comes equipped with a full kitchen service offering appetizers, flatbreads, sandwiches, salads, and even a mushroom risotto, which you won't find at many other similar destinations. Health conscious? Since cider is naturally gluten-free, every item on the menu reaps the same rewards or can be made gluten-free at no additional charge. The fryer is even dedicated gluten-free! Brick River also offers takeout off their expansive menu, including their line of canned

ciders and a growler fill service if you're in a time crunch.
MAKING LAYERS
Distributing through Missouri, Kansas City, and even Central and Southern Illinois—if you're away from home, you can still find artisan cider on the shelves of your favorite retailer. If that's not enough to get excited about, Brick River Cider Company has big news in store in the fall of 2022. A second location is coming to Kansas City's Crossroads District and is planned to open by November. The satellite Ciderworks and Taproom will occupy an old familiar space built in 1917 and located at 1701 McGee St., once a part of Kansas City's historic Automobile Row. The second location will have a complete lineup of ciders and local beers on tap. The announcement comes in addition to the expansion of the St. Louis location, increasing production threefold. No matter what your cider preference is, Brick River Cider Company has a taste for you; making it a must-visit location whenever in or around St. Louis. Just look for the old firehouse for an experience that will teleport you back to the ancient world. U

50 Years of Thrills
BLUEBERRY HILL CELEBRATES 50 YEARS OF BURGERS, BEER, AND MUSIC
Blueberry Hill, an iconic St. Louis establishment known for its food, beer, and music, is celebrating half a century of bringing old-fashioned fun to "The Lou" this year. Having opened doors in the city's Delmar Loop neighborhood in September of 1972, owners Joe and Linda Edwards have contributed to the area's transformation into a modern day attraction for locals and tourists alike.
FROM PEANUTS TO GOURMET BURGERS
"We wanted to open a welcoming place that was about music, pop culture memorabilia, and great food to share a beer over," said Joe and Linda on the website.
"We wanted the unique atmosphere to make conversation easy and enjoyable. Within a week of opening, we realized we also needed to help revitalize the Delmar

Loop area."
Starting with a hot dog machine, peanuts, and beer nuts to complement their extensive beer selection, Joe saw the need to bring good burgers to the city so he expanded the kitchen in 1974 with a new grill.
"Our most popular menu item is our
Famous Burger, and these days we're known for our wide range of burgers, including classic, breakfast, and vegan," said Joe.
The Rock & Roll beer originated in 1981 and Joe contract brewed the beer for about 10 years. Recently, the beer was brought back by 4 Hands Brewery and is available at the bar. To honor the beer's 80s origins, the can design captures the decade with totally tubular artwork.
MEGA JUKEBOX TO LIVE MUSIC VENUE
Aside from famous burgers and great beer, music has always been integral to the theme of Blueberry Hill. From day one, Joe and Linda had a Seeburg jukebox with a rotating collection of 30,000 records from Joe's personal collection. Joe was committed to introducing people to music they might not hear otherwise.
The Seeburg was named the #1 Jukebox in the United States by Billboard and

Esquire and #1 in the world by the BBC.
In 1985 they added the Elvis Room to bring live music to Blueberry Hill and The Loop, a move that helped put the area on the map as the live music center of St. Louis. Then, in 1997 came the Duck Room, inspired by Chuck Berry, who missed playing in small, intimate music venues. This addition led to 209 concerts from Chuck Berry as he consistently played once a month, which Joe considers the most iconic event that has taken place over their 50-year timespan.
Other acts have included Ed Sheeran, The Lumineers, John Legend, Nelly, and Grandmaster Flash. From burgers to live music, Joe has seen and done a lot but ultimately keeps at it for simply bringing joy to others.
A FEW FAVORITE THINGS
"[My favorite thing is] the fact that people from all backgrounds feel comfortable hanging out together at Blueberry Hill and that they all have a nice escape from their daily lives, even if it is just for an hour or two," Joe says. "There's so much for them to enjoy with all the pop culture memorabilia, the excellent food, the strong drinks, and of course, the extensive beer selection! I think people are going to enjoy both popping in to play some darts and having parties, reunions, and work events here. I think kids and adults alike will love it." U

DOUBLE SHIFT BREWING Kansas City's Unique Crossroad of Great Beer and Culture
Paying Homage to the Brewery's Origins in Sweat Equity, Double Shift is Dedicated to Those Who Live Double Lives
Located in the East Crossroads District of Kansas City, Double Shift Brewing Company is unique in many ways. "Our love for art, music, and culture has determined the path for Double Shift Brewing Company. Everyone that works here contributes their personality and interests. We take pride in the diversity that everyone brings to our team," says Jon Conway, the Head Brewer. Jon has a unique story all his own: he didn't attend the swelling rosters of brewing science programs multiplying across the country. While initially contributing his artistic flair as Double Shift Brewing's Head Graphic Designer, Jon eventually found a new canvas on the brew deck, becoming
Head Brewer in 2018. In fact, Jon wasn't the only one who answered the call to transition to the brewing world. Both the name 'Double Shift' and the attitude of the taproom, which now boasts ten taps with anywhere between 10-14 selections, can be attributed initially to the founding member, Aaron Ogilvie. Aaron, a firefighter by trade and home brewer by night, admittedly didn't get much sleep during the remodeling and transformation of the space into what it is today. But if you ask the community now, it was well worth the seven year wait.
Double Shift Brewing opened in July of 2015 to much-awaited anticipation and fanfare, adding another destination
to a community in search of great local craft beer. Equipped with an unparalleled work ethic and respect for tradition as the foundation behind Double Shift's groundwork, it didn't take long for the community to notice. "Focusing on traditional beers that are true to our style while injecting some personality and experimentation is the secret to our success,” says John. "Double Shift Brewing Company is a brewery that strives to be itself in a sea of breweries and remain true to the ideals of its employees and customers. Although, we do things our way to support our community, we aren't afraid of expressing ourselves. We always seek to do better and be better." While Double

Shift Brewing may be best known for Tessellation, its Mosaic-hopped IPA, even the pickiest drinkers will easily find something to quench their thirst.
From tried-and-true Belgian styles like Three-Eyed Toad, a toasty and complex Belgian Tripel that packs a higher ABV punch, to Stones Throw, a delicate Gose brewed with plum and lemon peel, there is a personality on the menu matched to everyone in the room. If cider or wine is more your thing, choose from a wide variety of can and guest-tap offerings behind the bar featuring some local favorites. Apricot, almond seltzer, anyone? Whatever you decide to order from the bar, make sure you strike up a conversation with the friendly taproom staff while doing so. Jon explains that although the popularity of styles comes and goes, the stories behind the beer

make Double Shift Brewing so unique.
Although the taproom space is not huge, it's by design. Seating up to 85 thirsty patrons, Double Shift encourages the customer to connect with the bar staff and each other by offering an intimate and cozy vibe. Double Shift's welcoming approach goes one step further by allowing its weekly mix of regulars and new customers alike to bring outside food into the taproom to enjoy while sipping on their latest offerings.
Like something a lot? A rotating list of 16oz 4-pack to go canned varieties are always available in the taproom, including on-site filling services for 32oz
and 64oz vessels. Depending on when you stop by, you may even hear some mysterious sounds or catch a glimpse of a shadow or two. "Is it haunted? Several people will say yes," Jon remarked on the building's storied past.
Regardless of the reason for your visit, Double Shift Brewing ensures you'll feel right at home from the second you walk through the door by passionate beer enthusiasts living double lives. By day, they ponder only beer; they are artists, musicians, video game, and tattoo enthusiasts by night. Like their beer, they are plugged in—authentic as they come and hiding in plain sight. U

Finding Clarity
TRANSPARENT BREWING FINDS ITS FLOW
GOING WITH THE FLOW
Nolan Brown was supposed to go to med school. So how did he wind up running a brewery in Grandview, Missouri instead?
“Through high school and college, I wanted to be a doctor— I went to school for biology, but when I took my MCATs I realized it wasn’t necessarily the right route for me.” Finding a new career path entirely, owner of Transparent Brewing, Nolan Brown, turned his home brewing hobby into a full-blown business.
Nolan was attracted to brewing because it allowed him to follow his interests in chemistry in a more creative outlet. After accepting his new path, he began putting in the work at both microbreweries and a national beer brand. By 2017, Nolan had
moved home to start his newest venture— one that would become Transparent Brewing in August of 2020.
Today, Nolan is the head brewer at Transparent Brewing, but you’ll also find him occasionally running the bar and handling managerial matters as the owner of the business.
BIG FLAVOR, LOW ALCOHOL
Unlike the numerous IPA creators, Nolan decided to focus on beers with lower alcohol content. “You go down that rabbit hole whenever you get into the industry of double IPAs, barrel aged beers, and stouts. Eventually I get really tired of it,” explained Brown.
“I was at a brewery one day where 2/3 of their tap list was 7% and up, and it just
kind of clicked for me: ‘Why would you do that to yourself? People can only have one or two pours before they’ve got to head home.’ It didn’t make sense.”
Transparent brewing focuses it’s sights on lower session beers so customers can sit and rest awhile while not having to worry that they are drinking something that will push them over the limit. Now boasting four original beers that stay up all year and six other taps that rotate,

there have been a total of 114 beer varieties served with 55 unique recipes. Plus, the low ABV allows time for socializing. The brewery was nominated the Best Bar to Meet People, along with ten other categories of awards in local magazines.
BEING CLEAR
Transparent Brewing gets its name for a number of reasons. The main one, Nolan explains, is that he wants to be open and honest in this career.
“A lot of people—when they ask me what Transparent Brewing means—they ask: ‘Is there a lot of dishonesty in the industry?’ And no, that isn’t the case by any means. But a big thing for me has always been education.”
Nolan explains, the education side of things is one of his favorite parts of the brewery. He likes talking with newcomers to the craft beer scene about the beers and how they’re made. He wants to help guide people to find the right beers for them and chat about what sorts of things they may enjoy rather than having them guess. He likes talking with home brewers too,
www.BrewViewMO.com • 27
even going as far as to have recipes of some of his beers on Transparent Brewing’s website for home brewers to try out. He says a couple have done it, and he likes spitballing with them about ways things went right or wrong in the process as they make it for themselves.
TIGHT KNIT
Nolan hopes that’ll bring more people to the brewery with sights set high for the location. Beyond expanding, the brewery has focused on using its 3.5 acres for outdoor space for activities like bocce ball and corn hole.
Attached to the other side of the building is Nolan’s mother’s restaurant, The Chive Café and Market. The Café lists suggested beer pairings with its food, and in turn the beer menu includes suggested food pairings. Once a month, the mother and son team up to create a five-course fine dining meal where halfpours of beers are paired with each bit of food. The brewery also has started distributing.
“It’s kind of a big deal. There aren’t a lot of breweries our size that are getting picked up by distributors,” says Nolan.
Forever keeping his focus on creating quality brews that bring people together, Transparent Brewing hopes the future will bring more people, more brews, and more sense of community. U

TIE AND TIMBER: More than just beer
Jennifer and Curtis Leonard met in Colorado. Originally making the rounds working in corporate IT, the couple loved working together but decided they wanted to do something else that was more community-focused. One day, Curtis came home with a home brew system and started chatting with other people in the beer community.
“Once I saw what went into it— creativity and great ingredients—I ended up taking over the brewing,” explained Jennifer.
Jennifer makes beer she would want to drink and that she thinks other people would like too. She tends to include a lot of fruit but offers a wide variety of flavors and styles. She says she’s often inspired by cocktails and desserts; using a book called The Flavor Bible to find pairings that work well together.
The couple started entering their
beer into competitions, and winning. Soon, what started out largely as a hobby started shifting into a possible business venture.
“We had a few areas we wanted to look at. We knew we probably didn’t want to stay in Colorado. We just kind of wanted a change, although it’s hard to leave – it’s beautiful out there. But just the cost of living and property was on
the rise,” Jennifer explained. They’d go to Springfield on visits and started to notice a desire and demand for craft beer that outpaced supply.
The building they landed on was a right-place-right-time scenario. Jennifer and Curtis found a property nestled right in the middle of a historic neighborhood, giving them a unique opportunity.
“One of the questions we had was,
32 • BREWVIEW MISSOURI • 2022 Issue 3
‘Are they going to be okay with this? Are they going to support having a brewery right in the middle of their neighborhood? Especially Roundtree,’” said Jennifer. She explained, the community is fairly protective over their neighborhood. “And, yes, they were very supportive of having a brewery.”
Tie and Timber opened in 2018 and things have been going great ever since. Tie and Timber does more than beer. They also host frequent concerts and parties with local bands performing live music. They also offer multiple festivals each Summer; the most recent one was called Hermonious and celebrated female musicians from the area.
“One of the things we were looking for
Tie and Timber Beer Company 1451 E Cherry St. Springfield, MO 65802 (417) 429-9131
from the beginning of this journey was something to allow us to be involved in this community.”
The brewery has leaned more into sours, which was unique when they first opened up. She tries to keep a wide variety with 18 taps available, but dealing with hundreds of pounds of grain is not the easiest task.
“It’s really important to us that we make beers that are welcoming to everybody. I don’t expect everybody to like every beer on our menu, but I hope I make a wide enough variety so that
www.BrewViewMO.com • 33
people can find something that they like.”
For Jennifer though, she says the process of creating the recipes and brewing the beer is somewhat Zen.
“You get a good flow. I just really enjoy seeing how the vision of a beer turns out in the end – you know, from creating the recipe to the end of fermentation.”
The reward, Jennifer says, is seeing the reaction people have to her beer.
“You get so busy as a business owner that you forget to kind of relish in that,” said Jennifer. “Every now and then I do try to step back and look around and see, ‘These are people that are enjoying a product that I made.’”
Tie and Timber has grown quite a bit through the years. They also offer cocktails and mocktails. It has a beer garden and plans to expand to a neighboring building next year. They’re still working on design but hope to break ground in February of 2023. U

Grab a Beer and Grab a Paddle at the Paddle Stop New Haven
PADDLE STOP TOURS MAKES ITS DEBUT
As his hobby grew and more space was needed, the couple took over a former lumber yard on the Missouri River in New Haven. Soon, they offered guided instruction that included an introduction to Missouri paddling and group trips in a 10-person Voyager canoe. Next came a shuttle service for clients with their own canoes and canoe and camping equipment rental for paddlers.
What’s
better than a family-owned business? A familyowned business whose owners absolutely love what they do and blend their passions into their business every day. That’s what Stacy and Shane Camden did when they combined their love of the Missouri River with their love of beer.
Paddle Stop, which opened in 2019, o ers canoe and kayak tours, and Paddle Stop Brewery, opened three years later.
Lovers of both paddleboarding and craft beer, it all started when Stacy, an English teacher, asked her husband, a skilled carpenter, to build her a standup paddleboard out of wood. A born tinkerer, Shane enjoyed the challenge so much that he soon made wooden standup paddleboards in his basement.
Because their building had so much unused space, Shane loaned out space for Matt Walters to work on his boat. At the time, he was the owner of Foeder Crafters of America, a manufacturer of oak fermenting barrels in nearby St. Louis, and the only maker of American foeders. Before long, Shane and Matt drew up plans to start a brewery, another one of Shane’s favorite hobbies.
A NEW BREWERY ON THE MISSOURI RIVER IS BORN
New Haven is the perfect location for a brewery. As Stacy explains, “It’s located on Highway 100 in Missouri wine country, a destination for wineries, breweries, and distilleries and it’s right on the river.” She goes on to say that experienced canoers and kayakers often set out from Three Forks, Montana to travel the entire length of the 2300-mile-long river, stopping at the Paddle Stop’s taproom 1400 miles into their journey. The brewery
www.BrewViewMO.com • 39
even offers a slide show featuring photos taken by paddlers who have completed the trip.
Since its soft opening in January 2022, the brewery functions primarily as a taproom open year-round from Thursdays through Sundays. The full-time manager is none other than the Camdens’ daughter Madison. The industrial-style space’s paddleboardthemed decor showcases Shane’s carpentry skills. Many of his hand-crafted cedar paddle boards are displayed on the walls, some as many as 18 feet long. The bathroom features a trough sink that he fashioned out of a cedar strip canoe, while the beerhall style tables are yet another example of his artistry. In addition, some of the taproom’s wall space is reserved for featuring the work of local artists.
Taking a year off from teaching to get the project off the ground, Stacy found herself with boxes full of her favorite

books. As further evidence of the couple’s entrepreneurial spirit, she opened a library lounge where customers can browse through them while enjoying their brew. The other two Camden kids, Mason and Megan, are helping out by serving smashburgers, a local favorite, to go along with the beer, making the brewery truly a family affair. They plan to add to the menu in the near future.
AND WHAT ABOUT THE BEER?
The beer is crafted using a five-barrel oak system purchased from Foeder Crafters. As for what makes it unique, Stacy

explains, just like oak wine barrels, “the wood tannins impart an oaky taste to the beers.” The large-barreled system creates a high beer-to-wood ratio that allows the beer to mature. In contrast, the beer in smaller barrels progresses sooner, leading to acidification before it is fully developed.
When asked what the future holds for Paddle Stop Brewery, Stacy responds, “We have an outdoor space, but it’s not what we want it to be, so we will soon start converting it into a beer garden.” There are also plans to begin distribution. She concludes, “But our focus will always be on producing a strong, solid beer and making the Paddle Stop a great place to hang out.” U

A WINERY AND VINEYARD WITHOUT GENERATIONS OF EXPERIENCE —
NO BLUFFING
Immigrants discovered the fertile land around the Ozarks more than 150 years ago, but not all vineyards in the area are generational establishments.
Shawnee Bluff Winery and Vineyard opened in 2014 and is already making a name for itself.
MORE THAN ONE WAY TO BUILD A WINERY
Shawnee Bluff Vineyard and Winery’s owners, the Griswold family, have a
background in construction, real estate, and hospitality. Gail Griswold’s father started the business with help from a few partners. Gail and her husband took over in September of 2015. “I don’t know who doesn’t have a passion for wine,” Gail joked. “But I didn’t go to school for it—I don’t have a sommelier, I don’t have any of that—but I was looking into it, and I don’t really need to have any of that to run a business.”
What she does have is fertile land,
gorgeous views, and plenty of business savvy. Shawnee Bluff started with the winery in Lake Ozark, overlooking the lake on a bluff. The building was a motel constructed in 1935 when the dam was built and included its original sandstone structure. The winery primarily offers wines from Missouri, though they import some in bulk from California and Washington State. The wines they import stick with the same taste profile and are consistently available. They also bring in some small-batch wines for customers to sample. That site also hosts weddings and other events and frequently holds small or medium-sized concerts.
MISSOURI BORN AND BRED
The Griswolds later added a vineyard in Eldon, where they grow St. Vincent grapes. St. Vincents are a red grape discovered in Augusta, MO in 1973. They stand on their own but also blend very well. Shawnee Bluff uses them to make a semi-sweet, dry rosé that they serve onsite. They plant the popular Vignoles and Chambourcin grapes as well.
“It kind of depends on how the wine is processing,” explained Gail. “We’re very small, so our vineyard manager keeps an eye aging it. We do have some dessert

wine that we’re aging. It just kind of depends on the market—what’s available. We’ve had a couple frosts here the last couple years.” They also have some vines at the Lake Ozark location, which don’t frost over as much and create different wines.
GETTING THERE IS HALF THE FUN Soon, Shawnee Bluff will have a 16-acre destination winery in Camdenton called Riverbird. It overlooks a tributary leading into the Lake of the Ozarks. “It’s kind of a prime, quiet spot—I guess it’s the last
frontier of the lake,” said Gail. “It’s still heavily-owned, residential, farming, and agriculture—not a lot of commercial, so it’s really off the beaten path, very private. I think that’s the appeal—and it’s more of an adventure getting there.”
The site is on the National Historic Registry. It was built in 1919, mainly as a hunting lodge and then changing hands over the years. It’s a gorgeous spot in nature, where visitors can even kayak in and out on the Little Niagara River. “I’d say one of the things we specialize in and really enjoy is taking old spaces and

bringing them back to life,” said Gail. They’ve been working on renovations since 2018 and are hoping to open in the fall of 2022.
Once that winery is up and running, Gail will be able to shift her focus back to small-batch wines and production. They also have a distillery permit and are working on aging a brandy. U

Great Things on the Horizon for Great River Brewing Co.
Anexciting new brewery is on the horizon in Hannibal, and with a motto promising “Great River, Great Beer, Great Company,” the future brick-and-mortar outpost for Great River Brewing Co. is sure to be a success. What began as a passion project by friends Wes Wheeler, Mike McKenzie and Landon Shaw has evolved into a successful brand serving up award-winning brews.
"The three of us have been brewing together for about twelve years, and friends for even longer,” said Wes. “We started small brewing out of Landon’s home, and have been working our way up to the big system we have now.”
The three Hannibal natives forged a friendship centered around their passion for good beer, and after succeeding at brewing batches at home, they began entering local home brewing competitions, and are now becoming a decorated success.
“We brew a little bit of everything, from lagers to seltzers to stouts,” said Wes. “We’re best known for our fruited saison, Razzle Dazzle, which won first place and the People’s Choice award at the Brew Skies Music Festival.”
Razzle Dazzle is brewed with raspberry puree and has become a local celebrity among Great River Brewing Co. fans. This fall, the team will also launch an Oktoberfest and a pumpkin ale, with their sights set on a barrel aged program in the future.
Now, as the brewery grows in popularity, Wes, Mike and Landon have their sights set on a new endeavor: a brick-and-mortar location centered around good beer and good oldfashioned family fun.
“We have seven kids between the three of us, so we want the space to be a family-friendly environment,” said Wes.
“We’re envisioning an open, indoor and outdoor space with a dedicated outdoor patio, and an area for games.”
In addition to the kid-friendly revelry, the space will feature a large stage for hosting regular live entertainment. They plan to bring food into the venue as well, with a small kitchen on-site and the capability for hosting food trucks. In addition, visitors will be permitted to bring their own food.
The future space has already been secured, with the trio slated to assume ownership in early December.
“We are putting all of our plans in

place now so that when we become owners this December, we’re ready to begin construction the very next day,” Wes added. “Our goal is to be up and running by next spring or early summer; hopefully by Memorial Day.”
In the meantime, the group regularly hosts pop-up events for the community to get to know and love their beer, offering tap pours, growler fills and crowlers to go. The current taps include Honey Wheat, Unsinkable Pale Ale, American Lager and Hazelnut Brown. The group is also committed to attending events and festivals in and around Hannibal for the foreseeable future, including the Hannibal Folklife Festival this October.
Follow the Great River Brewing Co. on Facebook (@GreatRiverBrewingCo) to stay up-to-date on the latest company news, pop-ups and opening details, and to show your support as the group readies to bring their brews to the masses. Cheers! U

MERYL SIEGMAN
A TIGER SANCTUARY IN WINE AND BEER COUNTRY
Ste. Genevieve, MO is the oldest permanent European settlement west of the Mississippi River. It is located between St. Louis and Cape Girardeau and is a land of hay fields and cow pastures. It is also a top destination for wine lovers and beer aficionados. It has its own “Route du Vin” that stretches from Ste. Genevieve west to Farmington, and thanks to its proximity to St. Louis, home of Anheuser-Busch and Budweiser, it's where you can find some of the country’s best craft breweries.
LIONS AND TIGERS AND BEERS, OH MY!
Who would expect to find a streak of tigers inhabiting this gastronomic heaven? That’s what we asked John Madigan, the operations manager at Crown Ridge Tiger Sanctuary. “This location wasn’t chosen for big cats,” he explained, “it just happened that way.”
Joe Scott Sr., Crown Ridge’s founder, purchased the 56-acre property, leased some of it to a different big cat sanctuary, and built enclosures and housing for

the animals. After that sanctuary vacated the property, The Scott Foundation decided to turn it into an animal sanctuary of its own.
The result was the Crown Ridge Tiger Sanctuary, a Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) verified 501(c)3 non-profit big cat rescue and educational facility that provides permanent lifelong care for abused, neglected, or unwanted big cats. Its mission is to give sanctuary to animals and inspire change to end the captive wildlife crisis. It envisions a world where wild cats can thrive in their natural environments, and the need for sanctuaries does not exist. The refuge offers on and off-site presentations, tours, and education groups to increase public awareness and inspire a change in the world’s big cat crisis.
Crown Ridge started out with five big cats, including a pair of sister tigers, Gracie and Thor, who continue to live there today. Two big male tigers, Izzy and Sebastian, joined them more recently. John, a trained mechanical engineer, started out as a volunteer, eventually
moving up the ranks to become the organization’s operations manager.
IT’S GRRREAT!
The Crown Ridge Sanctuary is the perfect side trip for folks coming to the area to visit the wineries and breweries. Open year-round, Crown Ridge is home to spe-

cial events and offers three tour levels. First, there is a 45-minute guided walking tour that includes learning about each individual tiger and a visit to the Education Center. The Early Bird Tour lets visitors watch the big cats at their most active point of the day — first thing in the morning. Visiting the observation deck is great for snapping photos and getting a bird’s eye view of the sanctuary. Finally, the VIP Tour is a 90-minute experience that pulls together all the best the sanctuary offers, including a video and guided tour, plus sharing an enrichment item with a tiger from the observation deck.
The sanctuary also offers overnight lodging for anyone visiting the area, whether to see the tigers, explore the wineries and breweries, or attend a friend’s wedding.
A TRUE SANCTUARY
“What sets us apart from other big cat facilities that some visitors may be familiar with is that we rescue animals from the types of places they may have visited,” John explains. “We follow the guidelines of the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) and adhere strictly to the federal definition of a wildlife sanctuary.” He says, “We do not buy, sell, breed or trade any of our animals. We are opposed to private ownership of wild cats as pets, as well as using them as entertainment.”
On your next visit to Ste. to experience its wines or beers or attend a destination wedding in Genevieve County, don’t forget to put Crown Ridge Tiger Sanctuary on your itinerary. You’ll be glad you did! U
