Happy Summer Everyone! We hope that you’re outside enjoying the weather. Canvassing the breweries, wineries, and distilleries in and out of the area all over Missouri. So much to see and do. We’ve got some pretty cool things to show you in this issue. First, there’s a solution to an age-old problem. Do you choose brews with your buddies or hang with man’s best friend at home? Bar K. Kansas City and St. Louis solve this in such a fun way; we don’t know who will be more grateful after a visit, you or your dog. Speaking of the KC Metro area, we spotlight a few places you can “get your game on.” Cornhole, volleyball, shuffleboard, and an excellent complement of brews to go with it. We highlight Shortleaf Brewing Company in the St. Louis metro and its newest location in the lakes area. Also on our radar is Wire Road Brewing in Springfield. And while we’re in Springfield, we grabbed a look at Mother’s Brewing, too. Sure, everyone goes to Hermann for the wineries, but we suggest you add the Hermann Farm Museum to your places to visit list. It’s a beautifully restored farm from the 1800s. We’ll let the owners explain: “We want the legacy of those who called this place home to endure and to inspire excellence in the next generation.”— Jim Dierberg, Founder. As always, we’ve got new releases, cover submissions, event listings, and more. So, enjoy Missouri’s finest beer, wine, and spirits this summer. We will be out and about and hope to cross paths with you.

off their creativity. They concoct a wide variety of flavors that keep customers satisfied and thirsty for more. Here’s a list of six hard seltzers crafted in Missouri, each a unique twist on the high-octane bubbly water trend.
BOULEVARD’S QUIRK SPIKED & SPARKLING LINE Boulevard Brewing Company got into the hard seltzer game in the spring of 2020 and never looked back. The company has since unveiled an ev-

Quirk Spiked & Sparkling Seltzers contain 90 calories, are made with real fruit juice, and have less than one gram of added sugar. The most recent installment of mixed-can packs was released in March 2022 and was aimed at various palates. They also feature off-the-wall flavors, such as Raspberry Rocket Pop. This bevvie is an ode to summer’s iconic red, white and blue popsicle that tastes like the Fourth of July. One of the first flavors created
that has remained a crowd favorite is Strawberry, Lemon & Basil. 4 HANDS BREWING CO. SELTZER 4 Hands Brewing Co. opened in St. Louis’s Lasalle Park neighborhood in 2011 and has since expanded its efforts beyond beer. The company has created a line of seltzers, canned cocktails, and spirits in the last three years. Known as a brewery constantly changing what’s on tap, 4 Hands produces a variety of seasonal seltzers and a handful available year-round.

The mainstays include Apricot Almond, Blackberry Pomegranate, and Pineapple Mango. The seasonals are Seltzerade, crafted to capture the spirit of popular sports drink Gatorade. Warm weather flavors that embody the heart of a midwestern summer — Tiger’s Blood inspired by snow cones and Raspberry Pink Lemonade, influenced by the memory of push pops. The ABV of these spiked seltzers is 4%. It’s gluten-free and under 100 calories per can. ALPHA BREWING CO. PRETTY PLEASY The brewers at Alpha have a background in science, and one never knows what they will release next. The establishment started making beer in 2013 in downtown St. Louis and now operates out of South City. They proudly craft flavors that won’t be found anywhere else. The Pretty Pleasy line of spiked seltzers are bright, light and include Cherry, Black Cherry Lemonade, Mango, and Grapefruit flavors. Mango is on tap at the brewery and is described as light, crisp and refreshing. The seltzers have an ABV of 5%. CLEAR STATE HARD SELTZER Those looking for seltzer with all-natural ingredients and a higher ABV need Clear State Hard Seltzer. Clear State only makes seltzer. It comes in three flavors, Key Lime, Passion Fruit, and Tart Cherry, and is sold in Columbia, St. Louis, and Kansas City stores. There’s no added sugar, it has 100 calories, and it’s gluten-free. PINEY RIVER BREWING COMPANY IT’S SO EASY The Piney River Brewing Company was originally 80 acres of cattle farm that was turned into a brewery. The same passion that goes into making its award-winning beer is now channeled into something a little lighter. It’s So Easy Watermelon+Basil Hard Seltzer boasts an ABV of 5%. 12 • BREWVIEW

MOTHER’S BREWING READY HARD SELTZER This Springfield brewery has 21 tap lines and is known for its shifting lineup of innovative flavors. The brewery created Ready Hard Seltzer in several flavors that have 90 calories. The drinks are made with real fruit juice, and no sugar is added. Ready Hard Seltzers come in Blackberry Lemon, Black Cherry, Cherry Limeade, Tangerine Passion Fruit, and Classic Lime. Each has a 4.5% ABV. URBAN CHESTNUT’S URBAN SELTZER According to Urban Chestnut’s website, the brewery takes a “new world meets old world” approach to crafting beverages. When it came time to explore the hard seltzer trend, the brewery crowdsourced to find what customers wanted the most. Customers tested three different flavors. The two most popular flavors became the new line of Urban Seltzer: Lime and Salt and Passion Fruit and Citra Hops. Urban Seltzer is described as “a tasty blend of thirst-quenching goodness.” The brewery is also crafting non-alcoholic sparkling water drinks. The line is called Hop Water, infusing hops into flavored sparkling water and fizzy water with hops and CBD. SCHLAFLY BEER’S BOOMERANG Schlafly Beer put their spin on seltzer early in the craze. They’re catering to a crowd who doesn’t like their beverages too sweet and desires an experience that’s more like sipping champagne. Enter Boomerang, a mead spritzer with a hint of lemon-lime. It’s made with water, fermented honey, and a natural citrus flavor. The 90-calorie cans are the first mead spritzer out of St. Louis. The recipe is gluten-free, 4% ABV with three grams of carbs. Santa Claus ain’t got nothing on Clementine’s What Makes it Naughty? What Makes it Nice? And What’s a Microcreamery?
P
lenty of attractions put St. Louis on the map, and one of the more unique draws is ice cream. St. Louis is home to one of the nation’s only microcreameries, and business is booming. Dedicated to quality, variety, and love Clementine’s punky-chic scoop shops are popping up all over the STL and even crossing the border into Illinois. Clementine's Naughty & Nice Creamery launched in 2015 and, since then, has expanded to six different locations, with a goal of 10 shops in

St. Louis and national aspirations. The creamery’s owner, Tamara Keefe, attributes the growth to the love and dedication she pours into every scoop. “As a little kid, ice cream changed my life,” Tamara said. “That’s always stayed with me as a super-powerful thing about building community and ice cream bringing people together.” Her huge IrishItalian family could not do things many of her friends with smaller families could. So all Tamara wanted as a child was for her family to go out for ice cream.
Tamara admits she comes from humble beginnings, and her childhood experiences are what made Clementine’s what it is today. She worked for a Fortune 500 company raking in big money for two decades. Really though, she’s from a large family that struggled to make ends meet. Every week, she’d pester her mother to let the family go out for ice cream after church, as her friends’ families did. They couldn’t afford that, so after months of turning her daughter down, Tamara’s mom bought a $2 garage sale

ice cream machine so they could start making frozen treats at home. That family activity grew. Word got out about how delicious their ice cream was, and other families began to join them on Sunday afternoons. When Tamara found she was utterly miserable in her corporate life as an adult, she turned back to ice cream. She went to Ice Cream College at Penn State University in 2014 and opened Clementine’s later that year. Microcreameries, like microbreweries, have to meet specific standards. For example, the ice cream must be made by hand in small batches using all-natural ingredients, including 16% or more real butterfat. Importantly, though, the final product has to have less than 30% air.
Tamara spent some time in the food industry, and she knows the tricks of the trade. Some companies use cheap ingredients and whip air into their ice creams to stretch out the product. Some freeze their pints upside-down, so they seem full when the customer opens the container when there’s actually a large gap at the bottom. “It always was my hobby and my passion. You grow up in life, and some people golf, some people scrapbook, and I always made ice cream.” She said. Tamara creates all the flavors herself. She had an unlimited expense account in her past life, traveled the world, and was trained as a master taste tester. She integrates what she learned about different cultures and www.BrewViewMO.com •

flavors with her creativity to craft new offerings. “In the sensory science world, I really understand tastes and textures and viscosities and all that kind of stuff,” she explained. Clementine’s is unique in other ways, too. For instance, her shop was one of the first in the country to incorporate adult beverages into its ice cream. Since it isn’t cooked-off or diluted, the flavor and punch stand out in the frozen treat. “That was really driven by one of my customers who asked if I could incorporate liquor into the ice cream,” Tamara said. “He was like, ‘C’mon, could you just try it?’… So I said, ‘Okay, I’ll play around with it.’” Tamara made it work. She now has a trade secret process for infusing alcohol into ice cream, in some cases for up to 18% of the recipe. That’s how Clementine’s wound up with flavors like Mango Tequila Lime, Chocolate Cabernet, Maple Bourbon with Salted Candied Pecans, and The Nutty Irishman. The shop is renowned for its vegan choices, too. Though Clementine’s locations are expanding, if there isn’t one nearby, fear not—there’s always ice cream delivered straight to your door. Order online, and the business ships packages of four, six, or 12 pints packed in an insulated shipping box and stuffed with dry ice. U 18 • BREWVIEW

Nature Calls Popular Missouri Brewery Expands to Lake of the Ozarks
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT, THE POPULAR BREWERY IN O'FALLON ONCE KNOWN AS PETRICHOR, ANNOUNCED SOME BIG NEWS IN 2021. NOT ONLY DID PETRICHOR TOUT A NEW MONIKER AND A NEW LOCATION, BUT SHOUTED FROM THE TREE TOPS AN EXPANSION THAT MEANT THEY WERE REACHING FOR THE SKY.
A BREWERY BY ANY OTHER NAME It’s no secret these are nature guys. The name of brothers Michael and Jonathan Crowell’s first brewery, petrichor, means “a pleasant smell that frequently accompanies the first rain after a long period of warm, dry weather.” Now branded as Shortleaf Brewing, “shortleaf” refers to the shortleaf pine tree that is native to Missouri. Either way, Shortleaf is still known for its impressive variety of beer options, now available at a second location in the touristy Lake of the Ozarks city of Camdenton. Adding a second brewery location was simply a matter of time.

MISSOURI • 2022 Issue 2
A FAMILY AFFAIR The original brewing location in O’Fallon outgrew its production capabilities. The additional site will include a third brother, Matthew Crowell, and brother-in-law, Bob Hoffman, allowing the brewery to expand distribution.
IN WITH THE NEW The Lake of the Ozarks location will house a newly built taproom, outdoor patio space, and almost 3,000 square feet of added brewing and cellar space. Both locations will offer the same beer varieties and a similar food
menu. However, for now, the kitchen in Camdenton is slated to be completed by mid to end of summer. This location will house a 15-barrel, fully automated, triple vessel steam brew house and 150 barrels of cellaring tanks that will increase Shortleaf’s beer production to almost 3,000 barrels annually. “The new brewery will help our O’Fallon location keep up with current and future demand. We felt that the lake area is the perfect spot for us with the population growth, the summer tourism, and the connections we have

built through many years of working and living [there].” said the brothers. “The public should be able to find our products out in stores, restaurants, and bars starting this summer in the lake region and the St. Louis metropolitan area this fall.” Shortleaf Brewing, from its No Wake West Coast IPA to its citrusy amber ale, Claret, and the Chocolate Stark, a stout made with French cocoa, the brothers literally make a beer for everybody and currently have 23 original beers on draft. There’s even a hard seltzer for those counting calories and carbs. “Our best-selling beer is our BOW Rider. It’s a light wheat ale that we age with blood-orange puree. It’s a highly “crushable” ale that people cannot seem to get enough of.” said the brothers. “This particular beer is what drove us to expand our operations from our current location…Now we will be able to brew, ferment, and can this customer favorite in larger quantities to meet demand.” HUMANS DON’T LIVE ON BEER ALONE Along with beer for all palates, each Shortleaf location will have a kitchen where they strive to match the same care and flavor profiles to food as they do beverage. As a result, the menu has sharables, soups, salads, sandwiches, and even desserts — many of which will be served at both locations when the Camdenton kitchen is completed. By far, Shortleaf’s most popular grub order is the Double Smash burger with hand-cut french fries. Each patty is smashed onto a flat-top griddle where it is cooked until the edges are crisp, topped with two slices of American cheese, and placed on a fresh potato bun. Shortleaf O’Fallon is known for its famous Sunday brunch. The fan-favorite Shortleaf Omelet, with ham, pepper, cheese, and onion, topped with beer cheese, is a must-try. Shortleaf Brewing is excited to be able to expand to service the Lake of The Ozarks area, and they are happy to bring their beer to another part of Missouri. U 22 • BREWVIEW

Tis the Season: Pickleball, Bowling and Bags in the City
As the temperatures rise and the shorts come out of storage, beer drinkers are eager to sample their favorite brew while enjoying a game with friends. Here are a few of the best places in KCMo to have a craft beer and join in the season’s best recreational reindeer games. PICKLEBALL AT “THE PICKLE” Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in America. There’s a place in Kansas City that serves as home base for fans in the Midwest. Chicken N Pickle is an entertainment complex that offers casual dining, eight indoor/outdoor pickleball courts, a bar, and an event space. “Something is happening at Chicken N Pickle every day, whether it’s live music, a charity event, bingo, yoga, or a watch party,” said Rachel Santschi, Director of Public Relations at Chicken N Pickle. “The 26 • BREWVIEW

pickleball courts are almost always full, and the unique and fresh menu draws a crowd. There is truly something for everyone, from ages 6 to 86.” If you’ve never played pickleball, a hybrid of tennis, ping-pong, and badminton rolled into one, you don’t have to be nervous about showing up at the courts as a true newbie. Open play is Saturday mornings from 8am to 10am for $5. At this time, the players on the courts will all be at the same skill level, fostering an environment of learning.
More advanced players may be interested in entering one of the facility’s three leagues: women’s doubles, men’s doubles, and mixed doubles. Courts are also available for rent, and players can lease paddles and balls. There are plenty of options of locally crafted beer to quench a player’s thirst. The craft beer tap list includes suds from Boulevard, KCBC, Cinderblock, Logboat, Crane Brewing, Double Shift, Holidaily, and Golden Road. “We strive to always support local companies in each market we serve,” added Rachel. Chicken N Pickle locations are also in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. “When people visit Chicken N Pickle, they’re blown away by the variety. There’s something for everyone, from pickleball and yard games to exceptional food and specialty cocktails.”
“We joke that it’s the Disneyland of beer because we have three different floors of fun stuff to do,” said Amber. The Rec Deck is still relatively new, as it initially opened just before the pandemic hit. Each Friday night is the “Happiest Hour,” featuring food and drink specials and a shuffleboard league. As a bonus, the view of Kansas City on the rooftop top is impressive.

Boulevard Brewing Co. Tours & Rec Center 2534 Madison Ave Kansas City, MO (816) 701-7247 BOWL A FRAME AT BOULEVARD BREWING’S REC DECK In 2016, when Boulevard Brewing moved its visitors' experience to its new space in Kansas City, they brainstormed about features and activities they could introduce to attract a new crowd. “It really was a collaborative effort from employees just dreaming and scheming about the future,” said Amber Ayres, Director of Consumer Experience for the brewery.
Inspired by brewery shuffleboard courts in larger cities, the staff decided to create a game space centered around family fun. So they installed five shuffleboard courts, a foosball table, and card and lawn games at the top of the facility, affectionately dubbed the “Rec Deck.” The shuffleboard courts are the icing on an activity cake for the brewery’s Tours and Recreation Center, offering many options for visitors of all ages.

The Unfiltered Wheat Beer made Boulevard a brewing titan in the Midwest, and they continue to pump out new favorites. Amber notes that Quirk’s new hard seltzer line is a popular beverage of choice during league nights when people are craving a lighter drink that they can consume in session style. “(Founder John McDonald) just is really a community guy, and he always had his friends at the brewery,” added Amber. “He believes in sort of the social aspect of drinking a beer together and coming together and community, and also doing things for the city.” CORNHOLE IS KING AT TRANSPARENT BREWING Cornhole, aka “bags” is a Midwest classic, and Transparent Brewing aims to be the destination to sink some bags in Kansas City. The brewery hosts seasonal cornhole leagues as well as two tournaments a year. Nolan Brown, owner, and head brewer said the brewery emphasizes craft beer with lower ABVs. Most of what they make is under seven percent. “My philosophy is that there’s a time and a place for those big guys, but the majority of the time, I want something that’s an 28 • BREWVIEW

easy drinker, and you’ll be able to have two or three beers and still be able to drive home,” said Nolan. He acknowledges that the brewery can be a bit of a drive from Kansas City, so he’s planned his brewing style around the idea that people might want a lighter beverage. “We want to make sure people can still hang out for two, three hours and be able to get home safely afterward,” said Nolan. “Sometimes you go into breweries, and you can only have one beer before you gotta call it a night so
that you can drive home safely.” There’s only one TV in the taproom, for a reason. The owners wanted to foster an environment where people talk and play together. “We just want to make good beer and try to capture as many people’s taste buds as we can,” said Nolan, noting that the Kickstand Kolsch is a popular choice of guests who want to play games while enjoying a beer. In addition to cornhole, Transparent also has bocce ball, a small dog park, giant Jenga, dice, and live music in the taproom. U

DOG PARK WITH BEER OR COUNTRY CLUB FOR PUPS? — YOU DECIDE
P
icture it, you’re sitting on a rooftop patio sipping a cold pint of local craft beer. It’s a warm summer evening with a light breeze gently tussling your hair. Your faithful fur friend laps up a bowl of FetchMe Noir at your side. The Royals game is playing on a TV nearby. Dreaming? I think not. If you have ever wished there was a dog-friendly, fun place where you and man’s best friend could hang out, grab a
drink, catch a concert and socialize with other like-minded humans, Missouri’s Bar K is that place. It has everything a mutt (or pet parent) could ever want in a bar… or a dog park. Under the watchful eyes of “dogtenders,” trained handlers, Fido can safely wander free. “Bar K is a unique destination combining a thoughtfully designed, fully staffed dog park with a bar, restaurant, and event space,” says
cofounder Leib Dodell. “[It] features a two-acre off-leash dog park with separate large and small dog play areas, supervision by trained Bar K staff, fun and interactive dog recreational equipment, a stage, outdoor bar, and all-weather seating areas with water, heaters, fans, shade, and shelter.” Leib and Dave Hensley created Bar K to allow urban dwellers the same recreational outlet as their rural counterparts. www.BrewViewMO.com •

Reverse “Yappy-Hour” is from 8pm to 10pm Monday-Thursday when you can save $2 off on apps and snacks, $2 off tapped cocktails, $1 off canned beer, and $4 off draft pitchers. In addition, there’s live music and fundraisers to support causes in each Bar K community. People without dogs are more than welcome too. “Some might think that’s

The Bar K restaurant serves a “healthy casual” menu emphasizing tasty, affordable, nutritious food for both people and pups. The large indoor bar pours a wide variety of exclusive Bar K cocktails, beer, and wine, including 20 craft and domestic taps. Bar K even hosts

weird,” says Leib. “But Bar K offers a unique bar, restaurant, and coffeehouse with great house-made food, gourmet coffee, craft beer and cocktails, art, and entertainment.” They even host adoption events, so chances are those without canine companionship may not be solo for long. Not only is Bar K’s concept innovative, but so is its business model. They sell yearly ($225) and monthly ($35) memberships. Guest passes are available at $10 for the first pooch and $5 for each additional pup in the household. However, during peak season (April-October), the weekends cost $15 with a fee for additional animals. Petless? Entry is free. They have weekly events, including music trivia and bingo nights. Trivia Tuesdays are hosted by Geeks Who Drink. Wednesday nights are Run Club nights where you and your furry workout partner can run with people of all fitness levels. Every Thursday is Puppies Night, where the babies can practice their socialization skills. Add these to doggie birthday parties, doga (dog-friendly yoga), and the grooming salon at the St. Louis location, and your doggo will never be bored. This place sounds like a little slice of hound heaven, doesn’t it? So if you’re looking to throw an epic birthday party for Princess, host an event, listen to live music, or just let Rover roam free, Bar K is an absolute must! Currently, there are two Bar K locations. The first opened in 2017 is located in downtown Kansas City on the shore of the Missouri River in Berkley Riverfront Park, under the Heart of America bridge. The second is in the Grove neighborhood of St. Louis and opened in 2021. To enter, all dogs must be current on Rabies, Distemper/ Parvo/Lepto, and Bordetella vaccinations. U www.BrewViewMO.com •

Wire Road
Brews More Than Beer in Battlefield Paying homage to the past while boosting the future
O
ne of the newest additions to the Springfield area beer scene is Wire Road Brewing Company, where they infuse modern flair with traditional goodness. Wire Road opened its doors in January 2022 in Battlefield, MO, and pays homage to the town’s story by adopting its name from the historical Old Wire Road location. HONEST BEER WITH FLASH OF THE FORGOTTEN A historic route in Missouri and Arkansas, the Old Wire Road has for centuries served as an important thoroughfare for travelers, tycoons, hunters, and explorers alike. Initially a Native American route, it was later adopted as the Butterfield Overland Mail Route in 1858. Telegraph lines were laid in the 1860s, dubbing it Telegraph Road. Finally, with the decline of the telegraph and demand for pavement, the road became known as Old Wire Road. Owners Kary Walker and Jeff Birchler embrace the road’s legends that have traveled with it through time. “The branding continues to be inspired by the local lore and history,” said Kary. “Our logo is even meant to loosely mimic a telegraph pole, and some of our signage may remind you of a road sign.” Elk Horn

Porter, Sweeny’s Irish Red, Dreamspinner Dunkel, and Grand Champ Saison are all named for area mythology. Along with acknowledging Battlefield’s unique past, Wire Road is on a mission to bring something new to the craft beer crowd. They intend to broaden people’s palates who appreciate quality and simultaneously inform patrons about various beer styles. In that vein, head brewer Andy Pearsall is focused on customary techniques and maintaining the tradition of beer. BEER 101 “Our Battlefield Bitter is an Extra Special Bitter (ESB). Keeping ‘bitter’ in the name required [learning] what an ESB was and that it was not actually an overly ‘bitter’
beer, just keeping true to history,” explains Kary. “We will continue to educate our patrons by keeping a wide variety of traditional beers on tap.” ESB is shorthand for “extra special bitter.” ESBs are English pale ales known for balance and the interaction between malt and hops. The residual malt and its defining sweetness are richly flavored and medium-bodied. The brew squad also includes Ryan Quigg, assistant brewer and cellarman. With more than 10 rotating beer taps, the two keep busy perfecting new and old recipes. A top-seller is the Spirit Horse Hazy IPA, one they’ve already managed to brew more than 2,000 gallons of since opening. Yet, unlike breweries with a high focus on IPAs, Wire Road is less driven
distracted by an aggressively bitter taste — if that’s not their preference. MORNING COFFEE, AFTERNOON BEER Wire Road brews more than beer. They are just as serious about coffee. Cappuccinos, lattes, and nitro cold-brew coffees are available all morning. Sourcing beans from Battlefield’s own Copper Canyon Coffee Roasters, customers can come as early as 7am Wednesday through Friday for a caffeine fix. Wire Road Brewing has already secured its spot as a neighborhood hangout by mixing in a daily rotation of food trucks, live music, and a pet-friendly outdoor patio. “The craft beer scene has always been strong in the Springfield area, and it feels like it’s really taking off,” said Kary. “We have become great friends with folks from other area breweries, and it’s a very supportive community. We’ve tried to create a place where people love to hang out and drink good beer.” U by IBUs and more about providing a range of honestly brewed beers with traditional leanings. Other favorites include the Mueller Time Pilsner and Cool Hand Kolsch. “We put a lot of pride into creating a[n assortment] of brews, including some with very low IBUs, to invite
those novice beer drinkers to give us a try,” says Kary. “Wire Road carries a surprisingly low IBU average - around 40 IBUs amongst our 15+ brews.” International Bitterness Units are a measure of bitterness. Wire Road’s IBU range allows customers to zero in on the flavor they enjoy most without being

One-Stop Destination for Fun!
estled in the Ozark Mountains of Branson, on Taney County’s second-highest peak, is Missouri Ridge Distillery and Brewery, Branson's only grain-to-bottle distillery and first brewery. Here is where Master Distiller and owner, Greg Pope, crafts his award winning whiskies, moonshines and rum. TOP SHELF VIEW Greg and his wife Jolie moved to Missouri from Utah to retire on a lush piece of land that offers views for 40 miles in any direction. Deciding to take on a new venture, the two pulled from their retirement fund and built a state38 • BREWVIEW

of-the-art distillery complete with a one-of-a-kind pot still. Designed by Greg, it’s the only distillation pot in the world to run a vertical canted column, which offers more copper exposure and results in a softer, smoother finished product. This is just one of the many identifiable reasons Greg’s spirits are nationally and internationally acclaimed. As a third-generation distiller, Greg draws from techniques and recipes that he learned from his late grandfather who started distilling in 1925 while working at and borrowing know-how from a Chevron fuel refinery. “As master distiller, my goal is to continue my family’s legacy
of producing high-quality small batch spirits,” Greg notes on his website. Following the bourbon recipe of his grandfather using 60 percent corn and 40 percent barley, Greg notes that this is a more expensive bourbon to make but the quality shows in the taste and mouthfeel. Beverage professionals agreed in March of 2017 when Greg submitted a 96-dayold bourbon to the Denver International Spirits Competition and came home with his first gold medal win. Since then, Greg’s bourbon has won gold (20182021) at ‘The 50 Best Bourbon Whiskey Invitational’ in New York City and a double gold in 2022. Missouri Ridge continues
to litter Greg’s shelves with medals from competitions nationwide. HIGHLANDS H2O Greg attended the Artisan Craft Distilling Institute in Washington state to finetune some of his knowledge and tactics but credits most of his skills to on-thejob training. Another element that sets Greg’s spirits apart is the quality of the water that he uses. Missouri Ridge Distillery & Brewery is its own public water utility. The Pope’s drilled 1000 feet deep through pure limestone to discover water with a profile similar to that of the Scottish Highlands.
“We pump it out of the ground as pure as God makes it,” said Greg. Their newest spirit to be released summer 2022 will be Amish Fire Sippin’ Shine, a cinnamonbased moonshine. Made from 100 percent Missouri grown corn, cinnamon, and some secret ingredients, Greg says this is the real deal for cinnamon shine, and doesn’t have a slimy texture like other similar products. SPIRITS, BEER, MEAT, OH MY If spirits aren’t enough, Greg even has a 10-barrel brew system to keep fresh beer on tap for visitors. Rotating through several handles, Greg serves a variety of
lagers, cream ales, pale ales, and stouts. And, to keep stomachs happy, Greg offers a full menu of smoked meats and sides, including smoked pulled pork, beef brisket, ribs and bacon, all cooked over an open-fire smoker powered by wood. Smoking meat for more than 40 years, Greg has perfected his own dry-rub and uses the post-distillation wash from stills as the base for his signature BBQ sauce. His smoked meat has received so much attention lately, Greg was propositioned by a KC Master Barbecue Judge to form a KCBS team. BBQ is offered Friday and Saturday with advanced reservations. From award-winning spirits, to beer, and world class BBQ, there really is something for everyone at Missouri Ridge Distillery and Brewery. “Come out and see for yourself why we are the house of liquid happiness,” Greg says. “We treat everyone here like family.” U

Mother’s Brewing Company Reveals Secret Ingredient Mother’s Brewing Company, located in the heart of downtown Springfield, has been celebrating the local community and good beer since opening its doors in 2011. Mother’s owner and its building had former lives, but neither one was ready to ride into the sunset just yet. Take an impressive resume plus an unused structure; add a secret ingredient, and Mother’s Brewing Company is born.
I
t all started when serial entrepreneur Jeff Schrag was looking for one last business adventure. At that time, the craft-beer explosion was just being lit, and Jeff saw the potential for the Queen City of the Ozarks to be part of this rapidly growing industry. When the old Butternut Bread Bakery building downtown became available,

he knew he had found the perfect home for a brewery. From there, the beer trials began and, after much deliberation, led to the inception of four starting brews. The initial flavors were Lil' Helper, Midwest Coast India Pale Ale, Three Blind Mice Brown Ale, Towhead Blonde Ale, and Sandi Wheat Ale. Jeff then convinced 14 local establishments to carry his initial
offerings without so much as a taste. This trust highlighted Jeff’s connection and loyalty to the community and, in turn, the community’s willingness to support his new endeavors. Flash forward more than a decade. Mother’s now has 21 taps rotating various styles and flavor profiles. Everything from an easy-drinking golden ale to hazy IPAs with tropical fruit additions and a birthday cake Imperial stout to keep palates happy yet curious. “Mother’s wheelhouse is flavor-driven and hop-forward beers,” says Jeff. “By flavor-driven, we mean beers that derive the majority of their flavor from
something other than malt, hops, or yeast.” The brewing team is four superstars who work together to perfect recipes and create new, exciting beers. “Each brew team member has the opportunity to develop a recipe for beers, and it’s a group effort to make that recipe the best it can be,” said Jeff. Mother’s best-selling beer is one of its originals, the Lil’ Helper Midwest Coast IPA. The Lil’ Helper was developed as a way to blend East Coast and West Coast-style IPAs with a touch of the Midwest. The result “is a beer brimming with Midwestern friendliness: not too hoppy, not too malty,” notes Jeff. “While other breweries have taken on making a Midwest Coast IPA, Lil’ Helper is the original.” NOT YOUR MOTHER’S HARD CIDER To keep up with bubbling trends, the team at Mother’s Brewing decided to dive into the world

of hard seltzers. Unfortunately, the initial launch fizzled out, and they were forced to issue a recall. Still, the upshot of that inspired the use of natural fruit juice, which ultimately sets the Mother’s hard seltzers apart from others on the market. “We only use real juice, and the proof is in the flavor,” says Jeff. “So much better than our early batches and so much better than the majority of seltzers that rely on artificial flavors.” Mother’s currently offers three hard seltzer flavors: Cherry Limeade, Blackberry Lemon, and Black Cherry, but plan to add Classic Lime and Tangerine Passionfruit to complete the Ready Hard Seltzer Variety 12-pack. Mother’s Brewing has no shortage of good drinks on tap but prides itself on its more than two acres of backyard space, “it’s a place where you can bring your children to climb on the playset or your friends to toast a life achievement,” says Jeff. The brewery also hosts live music, festivals, and events for

organizations of all types. In addition, they recently opened the barrel-aging facility—the Barrel House—to provide more indoor space when the weather doesn’t cooperate. NOTHING LIKE A MOTHER’S LOVE With community always in mind, the main ingredient of Mother’s Brewing Company is none other than a little love. “Mother’s Brewing Company brews beer the only way we know how: with a mother’s love. A love that begins on the Springfield streets as we walk between pubs. A love found in centuries of brewing tradition. A love in mastering and then reinventing those traditions” said Jeff. “From our brewhouse to your backyard, we infuse everything that we are into every drop of your beer. We believe in love. We brew love in Downtown Springfield.” U

Living History at Hermann Farm
Missouri’s Cultural, Agricultural and Wine Making Heritage
A
s you look out onto the lush, grassy hills of Hermann Farm in Hermann, MO, you may feel like you’ve ventured back in time. The Hermann Farm Museum, more than 150 years old, offers a glimpse at life in the mid 19th century and the history of the Missouri wine-making region. Whether a wine lover, animal enthusiast, architecture maven, or history buff, there’s something for everyone at the Hermann Farm Museum.

MISSOURI • 2022 Issue 2
RESTORATIVE HEART In 2004, 167 years after the first iteration of the farm was established, owners Jim and Mary Dierberg embarked on a journey to transform the grounds into a replica of the original property. Visitors flock to the farm to glimpse what life was like for those living and working here during the 1800s. “The 200-acre farm is essentially what it was from the first settlers up to the present day,” said Jim.
Guests can hitch a ride on the tram, making stops at all the most notable destinations around the farm. The first destination on the tour is the graveyard bluff, where onlookers can see views of the Missouri River. At the plantation house, visitors learn the story of Charles Teubner, the farm’s original founder. He migrated from Germany through Alabama before settling in Missouri.
SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE The Hermann Farm offers several different attractions to inform and entertain all guests. Wine connoisseurs will love the cellars once managed by George Husmann, one of the most influential figures in the history of the Missouri wine industry. He helped usher in an era in which Missouri was the leading wine producer in the country. Animal lovers will want to check out the stables. Once upon a time, the farm raised dairy cows, horses, and mules. The shire draught horses were shipped from Missouri to Spain to be used in WWI and WWII. Today, the farm participates in a horse breeding program to help save the endangered
shires. Guests can even interact with the horses. Architecture enthusiasts will appreciate the guided tours of the Teubner-Husmann house, a Greek revival home built in 1847 by Charles Teubner. This house once served as the estate for the property owners and is filled with antique furniture made by local artisans. LINK TO THE PAST Though the farm operates as a history museum, Jim emphasized the importance of living history. He said he hopes the farm will continue to evolve over the years and “embrace the new” while still holding onto tradition. “Our goal is preservation, representation, research,
and education.” Preserving the history and architecture of the Hermann Farm Museum is a crucial link to the past and the local heritage. U
