The tour includes flights or tastes of each brewery’s offerings, appetizers, and a meet and greet with brewery staff. In Stowe, the tour makes stops at The Alchemist and Idletyme as well as Stowe Cider. Rock Art and Lost Nation are visited in nearby Morrisville, and upon request, Rick will make the trek out to Hill Farmstead. The tours can be booked as a group event such as a corporate outing or even for an unconventional bachelor or bachelorette party, as Rick noted occurred recently and was a great success. While he can accommodate 40 people maximum on two buses, he notes that lower numbers (five to ten people) are ideal to make sure everyone receives the full experience at each brewery. TripAdvisor shows impressive and, in Rick’s word, “humbling” reviews. The cost of a two-hour mountain bike session with an instructor (one on one) is $125, but if there’s a group of three or more individuals, the cost goes down to $75 per person. Bike rentals are additional. The brew tour without the biking costs $99 per person, but when combined with the three-hour mountain-bike training/riding and lunch, the cost is $199 per person. BREWS FOR YOU, TREATS FOR THEM Brian Eckert, owner of Four Quarters Brewing in Winooski, talks about his purposeful decision to make the brewery a meeting spot for dog owners and their pets. “Being a former dog owner and dog lover, I definitely wanted people to feel comfortable bringing their companions with them. We say that we are dog-friendly to friendly dogs,” says Brian. “Also, I wanted to make and give out spent-grain dog treats, another reason to have dogs tag along. We always have a big bowl of fresh water waiting too.” Owner of Drop-In Brewing in Middlebury Steve Parkes, says, “Drop-In is very dog-friendly. We have treats . . . we have leashes and collars too. We take Polaroids of the dogs that visit. We also have our own Corgi.” Other Vermont breweries, such as Otter Creek Brewing, also in Middlebury, even offer branded swag for dogs, including frisbees and collars.

PAYING IT FORWARD In addition, many breweries across the state partner with local humane societies and adoption agencies for events to benefit local canines in need. In Essex, 1st Republic Brewing Company hosted “Pints 4 Paws,” a special fundraising event, in their dog-friendly taproom and homebrew store space. Owner Shawn Trout says, “We chose to be dog-friendly because so many people were asking us if we allowed dogs! Sure, why not? We all have dogs and we love them. Last year, we hosted a charity event and had a huge turnout. There were dozens of dogs here, and it was a great success.” In St. Albans, 14th Star Brewing Company hosts “Bark ’n Brew” events that bring together local pet-products vendors for free samples and demos. Andrea Gagner, CEO for 14th Star, says, “We have held numerous dog-centric events, such as our Bark ’n Brew this spring. Our customers (and many of us) see our pets as an extension of our families, and providing a space to play, socialize, and shop local vendors is one way we like to include these furry family members. We’ve also hosted a number of fundraisers for our local animal rescue and have volunteered and made donations to other animal service organizations statewide.” Switchback Brewing Company in Burlington is another dog-friendly brewery where pups are welcome both inside and outside the taproom. They also host frequent

dog-centric events. “Dogs are definitely an integral part of our brewery,” says Events & Marketing Manager Amy Lieblein. “We host multiple dog parties in the taproom per year that benefit the Humane Society of Chittenden County. Our biggest and most popular one is our Barktober Halloween Bash. Folks dress their pups up in costumes and bring them by the taproom. We have a photo booth, costume contest and raffle with items from local pet companies, and a dollar of every pint and hot dog sold during the entire day is donated to the Humane Society of Chittenden County.” If you’re considering bringing your best fur-friend to a local brewery, cidery, distillery, or winery, he or she should be dog and people friendly, spayed or neutered, and upto-date on vaccinations. It’s also always a good idea to call or email in advance to get updated rules for bringing along your four-legged family members. Many establishments that serve food are allowed to have animals outside only and in areas where food isn’t served, according to the Vermont Health Department. Finally, as much as humans love hops, hops aren’t safe for dogs; sharing with your furry friends is not caring, in this case.

ince its founding in 2010, Citizen Cider has proven that the market for hard ciders is solid—and not only in Vermont. The cidery ships its colorful cans throughout New England and to New Jersey, the metro Philadelphia area, North and South Carolina, Illinois, and parts of New York.

The cider company had pressed all its locally grown apples at Stan

and Mary Pratt’s Happy Valley Orchard in Middlebury since 2011. Every week, two or three tanker trailers, each labeled like a giant horizontal can of Unified Press, would make their way north up Route 7 to the Citizen Cider production facility on Pine Street in Burlington.

However, the need for greater production capacity and the Prattsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; desire to retire from this part of the business has brought a multiyear plan to fruition: Citizen Cider is opening its own pressing facility in Burlingtonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s South End. Although the tasting room will stay put on Pine Street, Citizen Ciderâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s marketing director, Cheray MacFarland, says the cidery team has big plans for the new building. In addition to the new fruit presses, the facility will bring the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s warehouse space to Burlington. With the powerful new presses, the company is potentially looking to expand beyond apples. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re hoping to process all sorts of local fruit at the new facility,â&#x20AC;? Right now, there are few fruit-processing places in the state, so for us to be able to bring this to the Burlington area will be awesome.” The new pressing plant is open to the general public Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 4pm and for private parties by appointment. “It’s great to be able to show the public about the inner workings of Citizen Cider and the authenticity in our process,” Cheray adds. “When you visit a beer brewery, it’s just bags of malt, bags of hops. In our production area, you see the apples getting stored, crushed, and pressed.” And after all these years, Citizen Cider isn’t parting ways with Stan Pratt. “He’s still going to maintain the actual orchard,” Cheray says. “He is also still involved with the business . . . bringing the apples to the people!”

EXCITING CHANGES ON THE WAY In 2014, Lawson’s Finest added an alternating proprietorship arrangement with Two Roads Brewing in Connecticut. Sip of Sunshine and the Super Session Series are brewed there and are now available in cans and on draft in six Northeastern states. Sip of Sunshine IPA is likened to a “tropical vacation in a glass,” lupulin-laden and with hints of fruit and floral aromas. Super Session #2 and #8 are refreshing lower-alcohol beers, ABV 4.8%, each featuring a single hop variety, #2 brewed with Amarillo hops and #8 with Mosaic hops. “We always knew we wanted to grow with a public taproom and brewery,” explains Karen, noting that their priority has always been their family and raising their two daughters. Now, the girls are older, Lawson’s Finest has had a spectacular decade, and the handsome timber-framed taproom and brewery is on its way.

emember when you were a kid and someone would have an amazing birthday party that involved a scavenger hunt? Maybe there was even a map involved. Good news! Those long-dormant memories have been resurrected by

The idea to create â&#x20AC;&#x153;a speakeasy-style gathering in unexpected placesâ&#x20AC;? came to Sas in 2015, and while Stonecutter Spirits had just launched to the public, she knew this was an idea she needed to pursue. So she reached out to Chef Doug Paine of Hotel Vermont with her concept, and although initially skeptical, he

In addition to celebrating the Vermont landscape, Stonecutter held its first urban adventure dinner in a converted warehouse space this year with a Gatsby theme (black tie optional). Food and drink from the Prohibition era were featured, and Doug Paine returned as chef. AO glass held glass-blowing demos as well, adding to the ambience. The event took place in April, when winter is certainly wearing on Vermonters itching for a reason to get out. Glamour, glitz, and a secret entrance? The perfect antidote to a bone-chilling winter. Stonecutter recently completed its sixth dinner in July in Townshend, Vermont at Big Picture Farm. Cocktails, goats, and a colonial drink called “milk punch” featuring goat milk were served alongside wildflowers. The taste of place was highlighted via the farm’s shrubs and famous caramels. Then it’s off to Blackback Pub to pay a visit to Dave, who touts Vermont’s best draft-beer selection, and finally, exclusive access to select retail beers at Craft Beer Cellar in Waterbury. DECEMBER 8, 7:30–10PM OKEMO NIGHT HIKE/SNOWSHOE A guided snowshoe hike up the mountain with Naturalist Joe Karl. Roast marshmallows at the fire pit at the Jackson Gore Inn after the hike. DSO (Dark Star Orchestra), Nov 13 at 7pm at Higher Ground. If you’re a Dead Head, this is THE premiere live band to see. These guys generally pick a show from the Dead’s archive and play it note for note. 3. Melvin Seals & JGB (The Jerry Garcia Band) was formed by the Grateful Dead’s front man, Jerry Garcia. They play the music he wrote for this band, and it’s wonderfully groovy. It’s a tad bit more bluesy and funky, and lots of fun to dance to. Add Melvin Seals to the equation, and it’s a ball of fun!
