With all the snow, cold temperatures, and long nights, this time of year can be a bit of a challenge. And the challenge is accepted. There is plenty to see and do in Vermont at this time of year. You just have to look a little to find it.
We’ve made that easier with this issue. How about your own personal dinner and recommendation tour? We reached out to many of our friends in Vermont and asked them to send us one of their favorite dishes they create and a local beverage pairing. A local brew, cider, locally made gin, and bourbon. Places checked in from all over the state. If you partake, let us know on social media. Send us a pic, a tag—let’s see what you got.
There’s a great spotlight on the Vermont Hut network. A perfect way to enjoy the mountains in the winter and still have a safe, warm, shelter to stay in. Speaking of outdoors in the winter. Check out our Winter Essentials from Outdoor Gear, Onion River Outdoor and Ski Rack. And we run down Day Chaser from Vermont Cider Co. who has teamed up with Ski Vermont!
There’s the latest biz buzz, new releases, and much more.
Cheers everyone.

BY BART BEESON
On a typical winter day at the Chittenden Brook Hut in the Green Mountain National Forest, you’ll find rows of skis and splitboards leaning up against the deck railing. Inside, the current guests will be enjoying the warmth from the propane stove after a long day of skiing in the nearby backcountry zones of Brandon Gap. The attention to detail in the cabin design is obvious: mountain profiles on the back of one of the benches, a poured concrete countertop for the cooking area with a slick mountain profile backsplash, and
a cozy reading nook that doubles as a sleeping cove for two. With the babbling of the nearby brook, it’s hard to imagine a more idyllic location for a winter getaway.
CREATING A HUT NETWORK
The Chittenden Hut is the first completed project of the Vermont Huts Association, or VT Huts, which began in 2016 when a group of folks from various organizations got together to talk about creating a statewide hut network. Representatives from the Catamount Trail Organization, the Vermont Backcountry Alliance, the
Green Mountain Club, and the Randolph Area Sports Trail Alliance, as well as several other individuals, discussed whether existing organizations could take on the task of developing a network or if it should be run by a separate group. “We needed an organization that could be agile and operate in four seasons,” says VT Huts Executive Director R.J. Thompson. “So Devin Littlefield and I formed the nonprofit that year and pretty much hit the ground running.”
The central goal of VT Huts is to create an end-to-end style experience in

THE BIRTH OF VERMONT’S HUT NETWORK

Vermont for skiers, bikers, and hikers. To that end, they are also working closely with numerous mountain biking chapters to create the Velemont Trail, which would connect towns, villages, and trail systems across the state for a hut-to-hut riding and skiing experience.
Since forming in 2016, VT Huts has come a long way. They currently promote eight huts, including the Nulhegan Hut, the Crow’s Nest Yurt, the Triple Creek Cabin, and the
Chittenden Brook Hut, all of which can be booked through their website. For the building of the Chittenden Brook Hut, they partnered with Yestermorrow, a Waitsfield-based building and designing school. Much of the work on the exterior deck and railing, as well as interior work, was done by volunteers. R.J. says that one of his favorite parts of the whole endeavor has been the volunteer response. “They’re super motivated and with minimal call
to action on our end they tend to show up in good numbers.” He cites the winter of 2018 as an example, when volunteers showed up despite blizzards and made it up the two-mile access road to Chittenden Brook to finish the hut.
RISING TO MEET CHALLENGES
The effort has not been without its challenges, and even some intrigue. In 2017, the Trust for Public Land purchased a house that was to be the crown jewel of the hut system. Says R.J., “It was a beautiful log home and we were going to retrofit it with a few modifications to make it accessible according to the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) and turn it into a hut. Two nights before we were scheduled to do an overnight to feel out the situation and better understand what needed to be done there, I got a call that someone torched it.” No charges were ever filed for what was determined to be arson. According to R.J., they hope to rebuild something in the vicinity of the old cabin if the land is eventually transferred to the Green Mountain National Forest.
Of course, the coronavirus pandemic has presented challenges as well. In response, the association has instituted various measures to ensure the health and safety of their guests. All reservations are

for the entire hut, and guests are required to fill out a digital health survey on the day of their arrival to make sure no guests are symptomatic. Check-in and check-out times have been modified to allow more of a buffer between guest stays. VT Huts tries to adequately stock its huts with hand
sanitizer, cleaning agents, and disposable gloves but encourages guests to bring their own supplies as well. Finally, full refunds are given for any reservation canceled due to COVID-19 illness, including those canceled by VT Huts due to future government or selfimposed shutdowns.
32 BREWVIEW Vermont 2023 Issue 1
As for the future of VT Huts, R.J. says they hope that eventually the network will be statewide, stretching from the northern border with Canada to the Massachusetts border in the south. He adds that he’d like to have huts in most counties in the state, expanding to the east and west as well, so that it’s not just a linear network. “I would hope that we truly can offer a bikepacking experience with the huts, allowing that opportunity to tie into rural communities and provide the users of the trail with the huts experience in the backcountry and a taste of Vermont’s towns as they navigate through the network.” U

Ski Vermont partners with Woodchuck Hard Cider to bring the perfect slopeside experience.
Since the beginning, Ski Vermont has kept its business close to home. Ski Vermont knows that for many visitors and Vermonters alike, the more than 20 alpine ski areas and resorts they support are a premier spot for experiencing everything Vermont has to offer. For this reason, the organization has built its mission around sharing more than just the slopes at the Vermont resorts; they also strive to promote Vermont products— namely food and beverage.
Since 2009, Ski Vermont has partnered with Woodchuck Hard Cider to bring a refreshing sip after a day on the snow. A born and bred Vermont company, Woodchuck has been creating delectable hard cider for over 30 years and shares the same mission as Ski Vermont: to promote all the diverse opportunities in the Green Mountains. Working together, the two organizations have hosted various events and ventures from specialty food and beverage tastings to collaborative promotions each winter. With this sort of camaraderie, it is no wonder Ski Vermont named Woodchuck the official hard cider of the slopes!
Now, the partners are looking to expand their offerings by going back to the long-held tradition of après ski. Meaning “after-ski” in French, the
tradition of congregating with friends and having a drink after a long day on the slopes is one of the most beloved aspects of any ski trip. Keeping this
34 BREWVIEW Vermont 2023 Issue 1 INTERESTING FINDS
heritage in mind, Ski Vermont has expanded their sights into a bigger and brighter venture: a locally produced canned cocktail.
Continuing their partnership with Woodchuck, Ski Vermont has also added Day Chaser Cocktails; a canned cocktail brand that has become the official canned cocktail of the slopes. Offered in a variety of vodka-soda and tequila-soda options, Day Chasers are made with real spirits, real fruit juice and sparkling water, giving each a refreshing
and light taste after you seized the day out in the mountains. Sure, a cold beer sounds great after a day in the elements, but neither Woodchuck nor Day Chaser are strangers to a good après scene and both serve as great options for those looking to indulge in a refreshing beverage to enjoy while reminiscing over a day well spent.
Day Chaser is the perfect option for those who love their après ski, and further illustrates the committment these two Vermont based companies
share in celebrating the culture of the state. Always focused on showcasing the best Vermont has to offer to the outside world; giving a little taste of the Green Mountains while exploring them seems like quite a perfect match.

14THSTARBREWING.COM @14THSTARBREWING 133 NORTH MAIN STREET, ST. ALBANS, VERMONT
BY MEREDITH MANN, JESSILYN DOLAN, AND AMELIA
REVIEWS starlink & geebees
Both strains have been donated by Magic Mann, a female founded and inspired retailer in Essex Jct., VT.
Starlink
The first strain we dove into was Starlink from Full Circle Farms in Chittenden County: grown outdoors and owned and cultivated by two moms.
Starlink is a Vermont bred strain crossing Stardust x Double OG Chem. Starlink’s lab test for cannabinoids boasted THC just over 21%.
This particular pheno leaned mostly towards a sweet citrus aroma upon first smell. The nugget had great density and structure overall, with a purple almost dusty, hue on the flowers and rust colored stigmas, reminding us of the challenges of outdoor growing in this great northeastern climate.
The nuggets were shaped like christmas trees, with a closely manicured trim job, assumingly hand trimmed.Several sugar
leaves remained intact and upon first glance with a jewelers loupe. We saw plenty of trichomes, noting that Starlink could be used to make great hash.
Upon grind, the fruity and sweet smells continued to take over with a grinding moisture content “sticky enough to love and dry enough to roll.” The citrusy limonene and sweet myrcene dominated to create a kind of cakey and sweet dough aroma that so many of today’s retail consumers are looking for.
Once we rolled this sweet smelling and slightly tacky flower, we start with a dry hit as if we are inhaling the joint before it is lit. The intensity was mellow, a consistent sweet flavor with a fun kick of citrus.
Upon smoke, we found it to have a moderate body and mouthfeel. The
sweet fruity flavors continued to prevail, with a slight hint of vaseline or gasoline for a quick fleeting moment. About halfway through the joint, we noticed a bit of the peppery beta caryophyllene spice, as well as a bit more harshness on the continued smoke.
For several of us, this strain offered impressive physical pain relief and relaxation, and even gave one of us a surprisingly fabulous night’s sleep. We voted it as a great hybrid daytime and evening strain. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it as the popular hybrid sweet cake and fruit loving consumer, but for those looking for the more funk and rotten strains, or more complexity then the consistency found here, you might look at the next in line….
geebees
The other cannabis we had the pleasure to assess was Geebees from the Northeast Kingdom. The strain Snakes Cake by Marks Organix from York, Maine is a cross of Cherry Pie x Animal Cookies x Pineapple Express.
This indoor strain was gorgeous on the eyes with one of the best presentations we have seen to date. The trim was perfect with the highest of industry standard and was definitely trimmed with the utmost care and detailed attention, leaving those squiggly stigmas sticking out. The deep green was mixed heavily with purple and a grey/silvery frosty hue impressed all of us.
www.BrewViewVT.com 45
CANNABIS CORNER
The aroma had a loud intensity, with a rather complex nose, starting with cherry pie, followed with a fuel punch, ending back with a sweet kick once again.
The bracts of the plant were plump and swollen, showing it was harvested at the peak time, with a perfect stem snap in our hands, one of the many basic criteria people use when they look for a proper dry and cure.
A little moist on initial grind, the layers of smells from cherry to fuel to sweet, remained identical on the grind as to the flower in hand, a consistent terpene profile showcasing a great dry and cure job.
On the dry hit, we noted Cherry Pie right off, with fuel immediately following, then finishing with a lingering sweetness. This strain definitely has multiple layers of aromas, tastes and complexity. The intensity was moderate for an indoor, not over the top, but powerful, impressive and consistent from flower to grind to dry hit, leaving us excited to smoke it.
The smoke was as true to taste as it was true to its smell. One reviewer noted that it tasted “clean and chemical free” with us all agreeing on a moderate to full body mouthfeel. The sweet and gassy was second only to the “cherry pie
intoxication”, sided with a touch of earth/ pine that mellowed back out into the cherry pie. We noted a bit of pepper and spice halfway through and in the back of the throat, adding to the complexity and enjoyment. We ended with sticky lips and a mouth coated in sweetness.
This was unanimously described as a joint you don’t want to put down until the end, as it burned great, smoked smooth and tasted even better as it went along.
This strain was a bit more uplifting than sedating, offering more of a daytime euphoria than a deep pain relief for a few of us, though our guest reviewer, a seasoned cannabis consumer and now professional budtender, Val, prefers Snakes Cake as one that’s helpful for their all day arthritic pain.
