The month of June is my favorite month of the year! As a kid, my favorite times were birthdays, school letting out and summer vacation. As a boy I thought: “How could June be any better? It starts off summer vacation, includes my birthday, and ends with getting us halfway to another Christmas!” Well, June did become even better for me as an adult because June includes Father’s Day, when I take note of how happy I am to be a Dad! Happy Father’s Day to all the dads who are readers of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors. And a special Happy Father’s Day to those dads who are also our advertising Sponsors. While too many to mention by name, I do want to thank our Sponsors for their leadership in Newtown Square this year. By choosing to invest their limited marketing budgets in Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors, they helped birth our hometown magazine delivered by mail each month, and read online at www.NewtownSquareMag.com. Thank you for your business leadership in our community this year. This June edition is perfect for the hammock, lounge chair or beach bag, so don’t forget to take your Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors when you relax this summer. This year Father’s Day is Sunday, June 16th. I look forward to being with my wife Jean and our four sons: John, Joe, Jimmy and Jerry. With my birthday several days later, and the waves now turned on at the beach, my favorite month of the year is in full swing. Wishing everyone a great kick-off to Summer 2019. Next month I hope to see you all at the Marple Newtown 4th of July Parade.

The DeAngelo Family:

Matt and Mary Anne DeAngelo

A Family Adventure in Newtown Square Matt and Mary Anne met in the early ‘80s at Haverford High School, but didn’t develop a relationship until they met again in 2002. It was an interesting time, especially when they realized that not much had changed with their families. Both sets of parents were still alive, married, lived in the same houses and even had the same phone numbers, 20 years later.

by Craig Whitney Photography by Shannon Lynn Photography www.ShannonLynnPhotography.com

Matt graduated high school and became a carpenter. In the early years, he worked with different builders but eventually, he went out on his own. His primary focus was in the finish work but that skill grew over time and he would eventually supervise other contractors on larger custom homes on the Main Line. “I’ve worked on a lot of beautiful homes in the span of my career,” Matt said. “I’ve made long-lasting friendships with a variety of homeowners and have continued to do work for them throughout the years. Now, at this stage in my life,” Matt continued proudly, “I have the ability to pick and choose the work I want.” Mary Anne began working right out of high school, for a commercial printing business until they closed their doors in 2011. It was a small family-owned company where she started out answering the phones. She worked her way up to the Production Department. The company worked primarily with designers in Center City Philadelphia and was involved in a lot of high-profile events throughout the years. It was at this company that Mary Anne was able to work part-time when they decided to start their family. She returned to work full-time once their children started school. Mary Anne has since taken a position as a sales associate with a manufacturer representative group in the janitorial/sanitation industry. Many manufacturers outsource their sales team, and Mary Anne’s work involves facilitating the business between the manufacturers and wholesalers/distributors. Continued on page 6

Matthew and Kevin currently attend Saint Anastasia School, and will be going to Marple High School in the coming years. Both boys have a love of reading that they got from their mom. “I used to read them a book every night. I cannot tell you how many times we read The Lorax by Dr. Seuss,” Mary Anne said. “Those are the days I miss most.” Both boys are altar servers at St. Anastasia Parish, and will be until they graduate from 8 th grade. They’re also American history buffs: They read books, watch The History Channel, and attend local events geared toward U.S. history.

Kevin and Matthew DeAngelo

“I love the industry and I’m always learning something new about our products,” Mary Anne shared. “This is an environment where the learning never ends.” Matt and Mary Anne started their family in Aldan. Their son Matthew was born in 2004 and Kevin in 2006. Matt owned a duplex that he renovated into a single-family home. The entire inside of the house was gutted and redesigned by Matt and Mary Anne. Every detail was chosen with care. It was their first home and they will always carry fond memories of it. When the boys became of school age, Matt and Mary Anne realized they needed to make a move. They zeroed in on Newtown Square for a variety of reasons: The close-knit community, the beautiful neighborhoods, the public school system. The plus is that Newtown Square is equal distance from both sets of grandparents. “Aldan is where we had our kids and we really like the area,” Matt explained. “But we decided that Newtown Square was the place we really needed to be.” “We loved it right way,” Mary Anne added. They both loved Newtown Square enough to pick up and move. Mary Anne insisted that it would be the town their children would grow up in from a young age to college. “My parents moved when I was heading into junior high,” Mary Anne said, “I remember how difficult that was. So, I wanted to pick the perfect place that my kids will stay in until college.”

We’ve Got Special Gifts for All Occasions!

Matthew is very active in sports. He plays football, baseball and basketball, and also runs track. He’s also in Boy Scout Troop 315. “Matthew is serious, thoughtful and respectful,” Mary Anne said proudly, “We get compliments about him from other adults all the time, saying how he looks you in the eye and shakes your hand and thanks you for having him over. He is very mature for his age.” Kevin is what the kids today call “a gamer.” He has the whole system, a special gaming computer, routers and a bigger monitor than his parents’ home computer. He also likes to draw and has created quite a few comic books that Mary Anne thinks are “pretty amazing.” “Kevin is probably one of the smartest kids you’ll ever meet,” Matt spoke proudly of his son. “He’s intelligent, a great reader, and a great speaker. He doesn’t talk a lot but when he does, everyone is impressed.” The DeAngelos are very active in their parish, Saint Anastasia. They attend Mass regularly and have been involved in a few organizations like Preparing to Live in Love, in which they were mentors for engaged couples. “Working with the engaged couples helped us put our marriage into perspective,” Mary Anne explained. The DeAngelos own a mountain house in Sullivan County. Almost every time they go up there, they take a trip to the war museum in Sonestown. They have memorabilia from every war that happened in the last 100 years or so. Just as important to the whole family is having fun out in nature at their mountain house. They like to be outdoors as much as possible. Of all the DeAngelos, Kevin is the one who always wants to be out on the water. “Whether it’s the water park, ocean, pool or the creek up the mountains,” Mary Anne said, “Kevin just loves the water.” The DeAngelos have enjoyed many adventures wherever and whenever they can, but the one constant is their love of Newtown Square. “We always see our neighbors taking a walk with their kids or walking their dogs. Everyone is always so friendly,” Mary Anne stated. “It’s a very welcoming place to live.”

An exciting and different kind of “adventure” for the DeAngelo family three years ago was adopting Shilo, a dog they rescued from the SPCA. With Shilo, Matthew and Kevin growing, learning and having fun as a family, Matt and Mary Anne are very grateful to have found their home in Newtown Square. Tips for Funeral Service Etiquette When we lose a loved one, or a close family member or friend goes through the loss of someone close to them, it is important to participate in the celebration and commemoration of that person’s life. The following tips outline some basic etiquette to follow when attending a funeral service.

What to Say? When it comes to sharing words with the grieving, less is often more. It can be difficult to find the right words to say when one has lost a loved one. When speaking to the deceased’s relatives, be sure to focus on a fond memory or story. Try to avoid phrases such as “I am sorry for your loss,” or “They are in a better place now.” Instead, focus on the positives and express your support for them. Sometimes just being present and understanding can speak louder than a long-winded story.

What to Wear? It does not have to be black; any dark color semi-formal attire is suitable. Be conservative. It’s polite to wear neutral colors to avoid possibly offending the grieving family.

Expert Contributor by Rob D’Anjolell D’Anjolell Memorial Homes

Where Should I Sit? The first couple of rows are reserved for immediate family. You can fill in behind those rows. If you arrive late and the service has begun, it is polite to sit in the back rows to not disturb others mourning. If at a cemetery, there will most likely be a row of chairs. Those are reserved for immediate family.

What Not to Do? It is important to be respectful. Joking, talking and using your phone during the service is impolite. You should refrain from taking photos at the service or at the gravesite and wait until all the formal services have completed. It can be difficult to attend a funeral service. The loss of a loved one or friend results in many heavy hearts and conversations. Following these tips will help you know what to do during a difficult time and allow the grieving to focus on their family and appreciate the funeral service. NS

History Spotlight

Lost and Found: The West Family House by Doug Humes Photos courtesy of Newtown Square Historical Society

Sketch of the 1742 West family house

Innkeeper John West (seated middle) with son Benjamin (standing) and son Thomas.

We take great pride in reminding Newtown residents that the Father of American Painting, Benjamin West, had ties to our community. His father, John, was the innkeeper at the Square Tavern for several years before the American Revolution, and so his young son Benjamin served as a tavern boy helping with chores needed to operate a busy crossroads tavern. But if you have been inside, you know that if it was full of guests, there would not be much room for the West family – John, mother Sarah Pearson West, and ten children! So where did the family live? When the tavern was constructed in 1742 by Frances Elliot, it was made of brick – which was unusual for houses constructed way out in the country at that early date. As long as they were firing up a kiln to make bricks for the tavern, Elliot decided to also build a brick house catty-corner from the Tavern. The West family lived at this new brick house from 1748 until 1755

(while Ben was 10 to 17 years old). At some point, a frame addition was added, and the family ran a general store there as well. The Wests eventually moved on, but the old brick house survived until about 1920. At that time, a harness racer and trainer, Joseph Serrill owned the property on which the old home sat. He showed the place to his wife Gertrude, who told him in no uncertain terms that she was not going to live in “that old house,” and so it was demolished, and he built his bride a new home in its place. That house remains, though hidden from view by the modern Latvian Church, for which it serves as the parsonage. Mosquito and Tick Control in Our Area In a state that is a perennial nominee for state with the most Lyme disease cases, we tend to think that we are only susceptible to such a disease when in heavily wooded settings, such as Ridley Creek State Park. Truth is, we are always vulnerable, anywhere in the 19073. The vast amount of green space throughout the township, coupled with medium to larger home lot sizes, connect what is essentially a highway for deer traffic. And the more deer we have, the more deer ticks. Thus, the more likelihood of Lyme disease instance. It is highly encouraged to not only check children, pets and yourselves for ticks regularly, but to also do some research and see what can be done to prevent such a situation. There are many DIY products available to homeowners. Moreover, there are plenty of service providers that specialize in such treatments, and can help you stop the problem before it starts. Unlike tick control, mosquito control is a somewhat newer service that lawn and pest control companies alike have been offering for a few years. While there has always been a small market for mosquito control in our area, it took a few local reports of West Nile Virus to really create a market for the

service. Then, Zika Virus and the scare of the reported cases in Florida, created a boom in the industry. However, the biggest selling point for a mosquito control provider is simple: In our area, mosquitoes ruin outdoor activities from April through October. Mosquito control is particularly popular in a township that boasts numerous creeks, streams, natural areas and even retention ponds created by new construction. These small bodies of water, especially ones that tend to allow water to remain stagnant, are the biggest culprits. Standing water, whether in a pond, bird bath, clogged gutters or even patio furniture, can be more than enough for mosquitoes to breed. Preventing breeding is vital to mosquito control. Draining any stagnant water on your property immediately following a rainfall can lower mosquito populations significantly. If activity persists, your next course of action should be to contact a service provider that will help with prevention as well as eradicate your current mosquito population. Lastly, repellents such as citronella candles and torches should be utilized to help further control. NS

Picking the Right Hair and Makeup Team for Your Wedding Day You’ve probably heard from your mother or grandmother that on their wedding day they did their own hair and makeup. Well that’s not the case anymore! Hiring a team of beauty professionals is high on a bride’s long list of priorities. After all, there are so many things to worry about, why worry about how you look? Leave that to the professionals! When choosing your bridal hair and makeup artist, it’s tempting to go straight to social media, but here are a few things to keep in mind.

It’s all about YOU! Keep in mind that these professionals are here to help you look your best, and make your day run as smoothly as possible. Be vocal about what you like and don’t like, and enjoy the day. You only get one of them! Michele Quinn & Brittany Naab of Blush Salon are not only Expert Contributors of occasional Feature Articles on Hair & Beauty, they’re also Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine’s cover photo stylists who provide our featured residents with a courtesy hair and make-up session. When looking to improve your style, contact Michele Quinn and Brittany Naab at Blush Salon: 610-325-3266. N S

Picture your perfect wedding morning. Do you envision yourself getting out of bed, having your bridesmaids arrive at the house, pouring a mimosa and relaxing in your pajamas while your on-site beauty team promptly arrives, sets up, and begins hair and makeup like a well-oiled machine? If so, then consider you first question. Do they travel on site? This has become wildly more popular over the last 5 years. Just hanging with your girls while you get beautified, sounds wonderful! Who do you want to work with? When hiring a hair and make-up artist for your wedding day you want to be sure to know you’re hiring a team of professionals. Ask around, get referrals from friends and coworkers, check out their social media pages. Is this something they are doing every weekend, or is this a side hobby for them? What products do they use? Professional products are a must. This is your wedding day, and this look needs to last you all day! Be aware of the products that are being used. Cheap hairspray isn’t going to cut it! When it comes to makeup, if you have sensitive or oily skin, let the makeup artist know.

Exterior Remodeling Ideas

and Improving Curb Appeal Most homeowners first consider updating or replacing the exterior of their home when the existing elements are aged and failing – roof leaks, rotted wood, drafty windows, etc. However, with the increasing popularity of home improvement reality TV such as HGTV’s Fixer Upper and Property Brothers, more homeowners are excited to update their home’s exterior, simply to add more curb appeal. Whether you HAVE TO or SIMPLY WANT TO replace your home’s exterior, here are a few ways to add curb appeal to your home. Front Door – Replacing your front door is probably the simplest and most cost-effective way to add character to your home. Door manufacturing has come a long way, with different colors and textures matched with energy efficient construction. Fiberglass doors are the most resilient to weather, and are available in infinite architectural designs.

Roofing – Mix materials and color to add dimension! Metal roofs are very popular, as are different style asphalt shingles, as well as natural materials such as slate and cedar. Older homes which once had cedar or slate are perfect for a restoration to bring them back to their original glory. Mid-century homes typically have asphalt shingles, but adding a metal accent roof is a great way to improve upon curb appeal. Siding – Like roofing material, mixing materials (cedar impressions, board and batten) and colors, or opting for a more modern siding such as James Hardie cement board, are all good ways to maximize your home’s curb appeal. Adding curb appeal also raises the value of your property! Windows – Installing new windows could be looked at as an investment, as most windows older than 15 to 20 years have insufficient glass and poor energy efficiency. There are a handful of manufacturers who produce top quality windows, coupling Low-Emissivity glass with aluminum, wood, or composite materials for superior performance and a clean, refreshing look. Portico/Porch – Although the most drastic alteration to the facade, adding one of these architectural elements can transform the look of your home. They may also serve a purpose for increased living space, or simply provide cover when looking for your keys in the rain! Most homes have some variation of these, though a change in design or a remodel of the existing are a good way to showcase your home.

“We’ve repaired and replaced so many roofs in Marple Newtown, I moved my young family here to be closer to my work and to get more involved in the community.” ~Kevin O’Donnell, Owner

St. Alban’s Episcopal Church may be a small church but it is growing rapidly, all with the chief purpose of loving God and serving the community of Newtown Square. Fr. Matthew Dayton-Welch has been a part of St. Alban’s for two years and has seen the church grow in attendance and charitable giving. Originally from Oklahoma, Fr. Matthew worked for the U.S. State Department prior to his call to holy orders, eventually serving as an American diplomat in Jerusalem. His time working in Israel was very formative in his life, providing that grounded perspective while also leading him closer to the Gospels. “You can see the Pools of Bethesda, where Jesus healed the disabled man,” Fr. Matthew explained. “And then you see the Episcopal center for disabled children, and you realize that Jesus is still doing his healing work today.”

Fr. Matthew teaching in the Holy Land - Jerusalem

The lessons Fr. Matthew learned while in Israel have been manifested at St. Alban’s. It has always been known for the charitable work done by their small but earnest parish, and in the past two years Fr. Matthew has helped them grow their efforts.

A specific program that Fr. Matthew is especially proud of is the St. Alban’s Thrift Shop. This volunteer-run shop helps in a variety of ways. The group of volunteers has built a sense of community; the revenue has been used for many charitable causes; and affordable clothing is being provided to the people in need in and around Newtown Square.

Throughout the month of August, St. Alban’s welcomes each night upwards of 50 people experiencing homelessness from West Philadelphia and provides them all a homemade to-go lunch. “I think St. Alban’s is one of the best-kept secrets in Newtown Square,” Fr. Matthew raved. “It’s a warm community eager to welcome folks, serve God and serve one another. It’s the place that, no matter where you are in your journey, whether you’re a young family or a retiree who hasn’t stepped in the church in 40 years, we’re the place where you can start over and work on your relationship with God.” David Lasensky is on the pastoral board at St. Alban’s, and has been a very proud member of the church since 1991. “[Fr. Matthew] would win “Best Sermon on the Main Line.” He knows the Bible and the landscape,” David said. “Once you hear one of his sermons, you’re done. He’s terrific.” Fr. Matthew proudly shared that St. Alban’s had the highest Easter attendance in 10 years. He considers it a year-round Easter season around the church, everything filled with new beginnings and new growth. Having been a member of the Newtown Square community for nearly 100 years, St. Alban’s is continuing to be a powerful influence in the neighborhood.

Landscaping Tips for the Summer Mid-summer is a great time for shrub pruning and seasonal cultural care. Proper pruning is essential for maintaining a healthy landscape. When pruning, shrubs and ornamental trees should be evaluated for plant health and disease control. Shrub pruning is recommended twice per season, in early summer and again in mid-fall. It’s very important to consult a professional before any pruning takes place because not all shrubs require the same type of pruning. For example, larger leaf shrubs such as cherry laurels require hand pruning, whereas smaller leaf shrubs such as boxwoods can be mechanically or hand-sheared. Corrective pruning is a more aggressive method that’s used for several different reasons. One is to remove large limbs that are already or may soon obstruct house site lines (visibility). Corrective pruning may be necessary to remove dead wood within a plant. And this pruning method also helps preserve mature trees and shrubs.

healthy. Edging your lawn on a weekly basis will help keep your lawn looking clean for the season. Blades should be kept at average 3.5-4 inches and should be sharpened frequently. When rainfall is limited, the mowing schedule should be adjusted accordingly. Lawns should be cut on a 7-10 day cycle, to ensure the lawn doesn’t “brown out.” As soon as temperatures drop again and lawns are growing more rapid, the mow cycle should be adjusted. Irrigation is often overlooked when maintaining a healthy landscape. The mid-Atlantic region experiences very warm and often dry summer conditions. Frequent watering will keep lawns and plantings healthier during times of limited rainfall. Be sure to have a qualified technician evaluate and adjust your irrigation system. This will help ensure lawn areas and planting beds are getting the proper amount of water that will keep them alive during the hot summer months.

By summertime, all lawns have been maintained on a mowing schedule. Making sure your lawn is cut properly helps bring curb appeal to your property and allows your lawn to look

Expert Contributor by Heather Sefried The Joint Newtown Square

Stay Hydrated During the Summer Months and After Your Chiropractic Adjustment Not getting enough water in the heat of the summer can do more than just make you thirsty. You need to drink enough water to nourish your entire body, including your spine. If you do experience back pain, a chiropractic adjustment and proper hydration can help! When your chiropractor performs an adjustment, your body is put into proper alignment, which reduces the stress and tension in your spine. Once this happens, the toxins that have been building up are finally able to be released. Drinking water after the adjustment will help eliminate these toxins from your body more quickly. Drinking lots of water after your adjustment will also nourish the discs between the vertebrae, keeping your spine healthy and flexible. Dehydration is an abnormal condition in which the body’s cells are deprived of an adequate amount of water. One of the main contributing factors of a person becoming dehydrated is heat. Dehydration symptoms include confusion, muscle weakness, and fatigue. There are many things you can do to stay hydrated, including:

1. Drink plenty of water If you are not a fan of water, try adding a lemon, orange or a cucumber for flavor. Make it a habit to carry water with you during the summer months.

4. Avoid Filling Your Belly with Caffeinated Beverages There’s no study that says drinking caffeinated beverages as part of a normal lifestyle causes dehydration, but it does have a mild diuretic effect. If you drink such beverages, you tend to drink less water. So, instead of grabbing a soda, caramel mocha or tea, grab some water. If you want to maintain the benefits of your chiropractic adjustments, you will put down that soda, or you will skip the iced latte, and instead will pick up a bottle of water, the magical elixir of life. NS

thejoint.com

KEEP MOVING WITH CHIROPR ACTIC

NEW PATIENT SPECIAL

Consultation | Exam | Adjustment

2. Avoid Alcohol Excess Alcohol consumption can cause dehydration in a variety of ways. Alcohol decreases the body’s production of antidiuretic hormone, which is used by the body to reabsorb water. With less antidiuretic hormone available, your body loses more fluid than normal through increased urination.

3. Eat a Good Variety of Foods & Don’t Eliminate Carbs Eliminating carbs might be good on your scale but its not good for your levels of hydration. Carbohydrates are stored in your body along with fluids. That’s why you drop a couple pounds of water weight when you eliminate carbs. Also, carbs are contained in foods such as pasta, oatmeal and rice, which all soak up water during the cooking process. Eliminating them will also reduce your fluid intake.

RELIEF IS CLOSER THAN YOU THINK. Licensed chiropractors at The Joint help provide pain relief and preventative care, to keep your body moving all summer long.

3 Tools

by Sarah Forti Forti Homes at Keller Williams Realty

to Get the Most Money for Your Home

may be preparing to spend $500 repainting your teal bedroom, when a home stager can use a few home accessories to make the space pop, saving you hundreds of dollars repainting the space.

Tool #3 – Regular Property Maintenance The final tool is regular and thorough property maintenance. Seasonal maintenance, such as cleaning out gutters, checking the health of window screens and roof shingles, servicing the heater and air conditioners, and other small tasks is paramount to ensuring your home stays in tip-top shape. If you have been lagging in this department, your Realtor can suggest a handyman or contractor to take care of this for you. Consider having the home pre-inspected and/or providing a one-year home warranty, to give buyers peace of mind. Then they will be confident in purchasing a maintained, protected home that they will enjoy for many years to come, just as you have. This will make for a more attractive property and a smoother home inspection process. NS

Newtown Square’s Resident Real Estate Expert “I need to get as much money as possible out of this house.” A sentence spoken by many homeowners to their Realtors while discussing their home’s value. Makes sense, right? For most homeowners, their home is their largest financial asset. Even if you’re not planning to move anytime soon, here are three tools you can use to ensure you get top dollar for your home when it comes time to sell.

Sarah Forti Realtor

Susan McAnally Realtor

Tool #1 – Kitchen and Bath Fixes Kitchens and baths are the “money makers.” Many buyers decide on a property based on these spaces alone, so it is important to look at it through their eyes. Will buyers walk in and imagine cooking their favorite meals at holidays, or will they scratch their head wondering if their turkey can fit in that tiny 1950’s wall oven? When a full kitchen remodel is not in the budget, painted cabinets, new countertops, and a $2,500 appliance package can go a long way. In the bathroom, if there is no time to retile the shower or floors, consider re-glazing them for a fraction of the cost. It will make an immediate impact; it’s budgetfriendly; and it will take only a few days versus a few weeks.

Tool #2 – Professional Home Staging A professional home stager highlights the positive features of your home while minimizing the negatives. His or her suggestions on where to spend your money will not just save you money, it will make you money in the end! For just a few hundred dollars for a consultation with a stager, you could easily increase your return by thousands. For example, you

The Bringing People Together Event of The Year Is Coming Next Month, Thanks to Sponsors Mark your calendars for the event of the year in Newtown Square. Thousands will again come out next month to celebrate America’s birthday along the route of The Marple Newtown 4th of July Parade. My family and I never miss it. And like so many, we have a favorite spot along West Chester Pike to cheer and celebrate America and hometown pride. The Marple Newtown 4th of July Parade starts at 10am on, of course, July 4th. Come out early to get energized by cheering for the runners and walkers who participate in The Broomall Rotary’s Firecracker 5K which precedes the parade using westbound lanes of West Chester Pike. While the Firecracker 5K is a more recent addition to the parade, The Broomall Rotary has been hosting community events since 1961, to fund local charitable service projects and scholarships. For more information about Firecracker 5K visit: www.Firecracker5KRun.com. Our Annual 4th of July Parade is the gift of the Marple Newtown Parade Committee which dates back 35 years, always including individuals from Maple Newtown organizations and local business leaders whose sponsorship of the event funds the costs of parade groups to entertain us, traffic safety and cleaning up after we all head off to our barbecues and swim clubs.

Organizations like the Marple Newtown Parade Committee, service clubs like Rotary, and sports leagues that bring people together, can only accomplish their goals when they have Sponsors who contribute, with hopes of having their business recognized for their investment in the community. We need to thank the Sponsors of our July 4th Parade and Firecracker 5K, just as we need to be always rewarding the advertising Sponsors who bring you Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors because we all play a part in Bringing People Together. As Will Rogers once said: “We can’t all be heroes because somebody has to sit on the curb and clap as they go by.” So, plan early on coming out to the 4th of July Parade and Firecracker 5K next month. Bring a friend with you to the sidelines to cheer on marchers, runners, walkers, bike riders and float makers as they pass by. Cheer for America on America’s birthday, and while you do, take note which organizations are Bringing People Together by their service or sponsorship in our community. Be a Reader Leader by rewarding Sponsors who contribute funds from their limited marketing budgets, to support community events, sports leagues, and your hometown magazine. NS

AFTER Professional Cleaning

What are Those Ugly Black Streaks on my Roof (And How to Remove Them) What are Those Ugly Black Streaks on My Roof? Although these dark spots and ugly black streaks on your roof may look like dirt, mildew, soot or mold, what they really are is algae. The most common type is known as gloeocapsa magma — also known as blue green algae. This algae growth usually begins as small spots and then eventually becomes visible streaks. By the time this algae is noticed by the homeowner, it has usually been on the roof at least two or more months.

Why do Shingles Get Algae? Algae spores are airborne, they can be carried by wind, animals and even on your clothing. Because these spores are airborne, they can quickly spread from rooftop to rooftop in a neighborhood. This is also true for townhomes, condos and apartment complexes. Roof algae seems to be more common today than it was 20 years ago. Traditionally, asphalt shingles got their name from being made up of mainly asphalt — an oil-based product — and

felt material. To save money, most shingle manufacturers have switched to shingles containing asphalt but mostly made up of fillers such as fiberglass and crushed limestone, which encourages the growth of algae. These algae use the crushed limestone filler as their main food source.

Is This Harmful to the Roof? Absolutely! This algae feeds off the lime on the roof, causing it to deteriorate. You can reduce the 20-year roof life in half if you don’t maintain it.

How Can I Remove It? You should never power wash an asphalt roof. If a contractor suggests doing that they do not know what they are doing. A qualified contractor has special low-pressure cleaning machines to ensure no damage to your roof. You must maintain your roof to ensure its lifespan and keep your property looking great. NS

Newtown Square Homeowner’s Solution For Sewer Tie-In Savings There are TWO OPTIONS for Sewer Tie-Ins with Township Approval 1. Traditional 4" Gravity System

2. Directional Drilling System

Digging Down to The Sewer Main

Underground Horizontal Drilling

Pros • A Gravity System with a clean out, relies on gradually sloping pipelines for downhill sewage flow. • The sewage flows away from the property and into a sewer main, offering peace of mind for many years. Con • Installing a Gravity System will significantly disturb the homeowner’s landscaping.

Pros • A Directional Drilling System is installed by tunneling underground horizontally, under gardens, driveways and other man-made obstacles. • Installation requires far less disturbance of landscaping. Cons • A Directional Drilling System requires a duplex grinder pump with battery backup (in the event of power loss). • Directional Drilling Systems require bi-annual servicing and owner monitoring.
