Marian Wellington has been a member of the General Federation of Women's Clubs for over 40 years. She is very grateful for the fellowship and proud of the valuable service the club has provided to the people of Newtown Square.

In 2019, Marian will celebrate 50 years in Newtown Square, and she is as excited as ever to give back to the community through this organization.

The General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC) was founded in 1890 by Jane Cunningham Croly and other women’s clubs around the country. Croly was denied admittance to an all-male club in 1868, and decided to create her own club that would give back to the community and bring the local women together. Since then, the GFWC has grown to the point where the members around the world raise $40 million per year and donate 8 million service hours.

GFWC is a wonderful organization,” Marian raved. “The club's foundational motto is ‘what can I do in my community that will benefit them?’”

The Newtown Square Chapter of the GFWC was chartered in 1947 by a few women including Fay Weeks, who was a Newtown Square resident for over 80 years.

The GFWC has donated scholarships to students in the Marple Newtown school district; money to the fire company and the public library; and food to the emergency food center at Saint Mark’s. Marian is especially proud of how GFWC has given food, clothing and toiletries to the new domestic violence shelter for women and children.

Not only do I give service and my time, but the fellowship and support I get from fellow members is also very fulfilling. We have a common purpose: To help our communities all over the United States,” Marian explained.

Everyone at Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors thanks Marian for her enthusiasm for life and her lifelong commitment to the service of others.

The local GFWC meets monthly for lunch, to discuss plans for service activities and generally connect as a group.
