People in Places: Marian Wellington of GWFC by Craig Whitney Marian Wellington has been a member of the General Women’s Federation Club for over 40 years and continues to rave about the fellowship and the great service that the club has provided to the people of Newtown Square. 2019 will mark 50 years in Newtown Square for Marian, and she is as excited as ever to give back to the community through this organization. The General Women’s Federation Club (GWFC) was founded in 1890 by Jane Cunningham Croly and other women’s clubs around the country. Croly was denied admittance to an allmale club in 1868, and decided to create her own club that would give back to the community and bring the local women together. Since then, the GWFC has grown to the point where the members around the world raise $40 million per year and donate 8 million service hours. “It’s a wonderful organization,” Marian raved. “The foundational motto of the club is ‘what can I do in my community that will benefit them?’” The Newtown Square Chapter of the GWFC was chartered in 1947 by a few women at the time, including Fay Weeks who was a Newtown Square Resident for over 80 years. GWFC has donated scholarships to students in the Marple Newtown school district, money to the fire company and the public library, provided food to the emergency food center at Saint Mark’s, and Marian is especially proud of the work that has been done giving food, clothing and toiletries to the new domestic violence shelter for women and children. “Not only do I give service and my time, but the fellowship and support I get from fellow members is also very fulfilling. We have a common purpose, to help our communities all over the United States,” Marian explained. Everyone at Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors thanks Marian for her enthusiasm for life and her lifelong commitment to the service of others. The local GWFC meets monthly for lunch to discuss plans for service activities and generally connect as a group. Anyone interested in joining can call Marian at 610-353-1079. NS
