Newtown Township has a rich history, talented residents, thriving businesses, and a quality of life that comes from having great schools, respected places of worship and caring friends and neighbors. This month is Women’s History Month, declared in March annually to highlight the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society. So, in this month’s edition you’ll find a few feature stories about Newtown Township’s past and present Women. In my “Bringing People Together” feature this month, on page 17, I share with you how fortunate we are to have more than several women business experts in Newtown Square, whom we can thank for their leadership and contribution to contemporary society. They make it possible for us to have a hometown magazine through their sponsorship of Newtown Square as our advertising sponsors. For her contribution to our magazine, I want to thank my wife, Jean Blaisse, and our Content Coordinator, Olivia Whitney, our magazine Designer, Kim Cesati, our Photographer, Michele Moran, my Executive Assistant, Liz Burnett, and all our women Reader Leaders of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine. Without their monthly contributions to our contemporary society through our magazine: recommending families for our cover, taking photos, organizing features, sending us new advertisers, and beautifully designing our magazine each month, we’d never make our print deadline. Thank You, Ladies!

The Altobelli Family:

Raising a Family in Newtown Square

by Craig Whitney Photography by Shannon Lynn Photography www.ShannonLynnPhotography.com

The Altobellis were a wonderful family to interview, not just because of their genuine kindness and love for each other, but because their story seems so unexpected and predestined all at the same time. Growing up, Nick Altobelli spent each summer at Sea Isle City; Dana’s summers were in the Poconos. Nick is a quiet, reserved person who appreciates science and mathematics, and Dana is an outgoing person who taught elementary school for many years. Despite the odds seeming to be against them, the two were paired together in a number of unexpected ways and have become a strong and loving family. It was late summer in 2006 when Nick and Dana would end up in Sea Isle City at the same time. Dana’s sister, Tara, was dating a man named Brian at the time, whom she would eventually marry, and she wanted Dana to go out with them to walk the promenade. As chance would have it, Brian had been roommates with Nick in college and they were headed out to see him since Nick had spent every summer in Sea Isle. The four of them would have a fun night walking the promenade and Nick would head home at the end, but that night would be the start of an entire life together. Nick was seeing someone else in 2006, but they would go their separate ways later that year, and in 2007 Nick and Dana began dating. “Dana is really outgoing and talks to everyone and anyone,” Nick said with a smile. Antobelli Children (L to R) Emelyn (3), Maclin (10 months), Nathan (5)

Dana quickly added on, “I was immediately drawn to Nick’s hard-working personality, and I knew he would do anything for me.” Three years later, the two got married at Saint Anastasia in Newtown Square. They were living in Conshohocken at the time and loved the town, but as they started to build their family they knew they needed somewhere new. Nathan was born several years later, and they would spend another year in Conshohocken, but they were living in a small two-bedroom home and knew they were going to have more kids. Newtown Square became a clear option and ticked every box on their list. “I loved the neighborhood from the very beginning,” Dana glowed. “I love the schools and the sports programs, it is a really great neighborhood for a young family.” In addition to the schools and the sports programs, there are also family members on either sides all around them. Dana’s parents live in Broomall, her sister Tara and her husband Brian are raising their family in Havertown, and Nick’s family is in Springfield. It was obvious that the Altobellis were going to start the next chapter of their lives in Newtown Square, but that didn’t make the timing of the move any easier. They officially moved into their new home in October of 2015, and in November their daughter Emelyn was born. “It was definitely crazy,” Dana laughed. “But we loved being in this neighborhood right away, it made it much easier.” Their youngest child, Maclin, is currently nine months old and rounds out the team of five. Dana described him as laid back, the perfect calming presence to match his siblings.

Emelyn ran up while Nick was talking about her and was very eager to share her own side of the story with us. She has a doll house, many toys she loves, and when Maclin gets big enough he is free to play with them. When we asked about Nathan, Emelyn quickly said that he was her best friend and she loves spending time with him. Nathan loves reading the dictionary, solving puzzles and playing with LEGOs. He is a lot like his father in his preference for quiet and the joy he gets from problem-solving. He just recently started playing basketball and tee-ball and has a clear love for the outdoors as well. Recently, after some heavy insistence from Nathan, Nick and Dana signed him up for an ‘Introduction to Robots’ course at his school. The program teaches the basics of robotic computing, and gives kids a fun resource to learn about STEM. One of Nathan’s favorite things to do is go on vacations to the mountains. The whole extended family has begun purchasing homes in a single lakeside development in the Poconos. All the kids get to go out and explore the lake, go fishing on paddle boats and hike through the woods. The Altobellis spend every Thanksgiving at the lakehouse, where there could potentially be upwards of fifty people rotating around the five different homes. In addition to the larger family vacations, the five-person unit lead by Dana and Nick also makes an effort to travel somewhere new every year. This year they went to Niagara Falls, and a year ago they all went to Disney World. Now that they have been in Newtown Square for more than three years, Nick and Dana feel more and more comfortable with their home, their neighborhood and their community.

Emelyn is three years old, she loves playing dress up with jewelry and makeup. She is a bright light of optimism that warms up the whole home.

One special community they have started to become a part of is the Newtown Edgemont Little League. Nathan has started tee-ball this year, and Nick was shocked at how enthusiastic and supportive all the parents are.

“Emelyn is a clone of Dana but with blonde hair,” says Nick with a chuckle.

“There is a culture in place here where everyone chips in,” Nick said. “People understand that you don’t need to be the

History Spotlight

Women in History: The Grim Sisters

Alice and Myrtle Grim, circa 1955

by Doug Humes Germany had its Brothers Grimm, and Newtown had the Sisters Grim: two local girls who went through the township school system of the early 20th century, went off to college, and then returned to teach in the Newtown schools for a combined 79 years. In doing so they touched the lives of every child who grew up in Newtown for several generations.

Alice (left) and Myrtle (right) circa 1930

Born into an old Newtown family, Alice in 1888 and Mary Myrtle in 1896, they attended the Chestnut Grove Seminary on School Lane. Alice recalled: “Our farm was two miles from the school and I walked to and from the school every day.” Alice went off to West Chester Normal School, and then returned to Newtown in 1907 to teach in the Red Brick School on the Media road. Sister Myrtle, one of nine graduates of the Newtown class of 1912, went to the Normal School, and then was hired to teach at the Red Brick School. In 1925, Newtown dedicated its new public school on Bishop Hollow Road, and a new principal was named: Alice Grim. The sisters taught there for years, Myrtle until 1950 and Alice until 1951. At Alice’s retirement, the community gave her a nice present by naming the school after her. The sisters lived together in a house on West Chester Pike. Myrtle died in 1973, at age 77. Alice died in 1985, at age 97. Their home was demolished several years ago. In its place, the Goddard School has built a beautiful new school building, and has installed a historical marker honoring the memory and the contributions to the community made by Alice and Myrtle Grim, a fitting tribute to the Sisters Grim. Expert Contributor by Tom Rafferty Rafferty Painting & General Contracting

Choosing the Right Contractor Choosing the right contractor to either build, remodel or even paint your home can make the difference between a relatively stress-free project and countless sleepless nights. Here are some simple steps you can take to ensure that your contractor is capable enough to get the job done. While you may think that finding a good contractor is just common sense, you should be aware of the real risks that come with choosing poorly. People do more research when buying a car than they do when choosing a contractor. On one hand, there are many horror stories of homeowners who were conned into paying for renovations that either never happened or were completely botched due to gross negligence. In fact, over the past few years, consumer complaints against home construction and renovation contractors have been on the rise. Even if a contractor seems sincere and is offering you a “great deal,” if you can't verify references or you are being asked to pay upfront without first taking care of the legal formalities, watch out. Probably the most important question you need to ask is whether they have Workers’ Compensation insurance or not. Many people are not aware that if a contractor does not carry Workers’ Compensation and an employee injures himself on their property, then they are liable and will be sued.

Here are some quick questions to ask a contractor right away to get a good sense of their credibility. • Ensure the contractor has sufficient liability insurance should a problem arise, around $1 million in liability coverage. • Ask for references and take a look at the work they have done. • Ask about their employees, how many people are on their crew and how long they’ve been with the company. In addi- tion, ask if they have their own employees or if it will be subcontract work. • Ask if there will be a full-time foreman on the project. • Ask if they have staff in the office to answer any questions you may have. It’s important that the contractor be a phone call away. • Find out if they have a state license or local licenses. • Ask if they belong to any professional organizations related to their business. This will speak to their reputation, local cred ibility and the level of commitment they have in their business. Remember to compare apples to apples when getting an estimate. When the price is too good to be true, it usually is. Most importantly remember this: Quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten. NS

Business Profile

by Craig Whitney Photography by Shannon Lynn Photography

Rafferty Subaru has been a trusted part of the Newtown Square community for 42 years. The company has gone through many iterations, from a rebranding in 2000 to a massive renovation last year. Through it all, the company has remained true to its dedication to customer service and hard work since it was founded in 1977. Robert Rafferty began the dealership in Newtown Square after spending years working in the industry. Immediately after returning from the Air Force, he began selling cars, starting with small dealerships and eventually working for a national leasing company. He worked for a Cadillac dealership in Boston for a short period until he decided to start a dealership of his own in Newtown Square. At first, the dealership sold many different brands of cars, including Pontiac and GMC. Robert’s sons, Kevin and Bob, grew up with the business and would start working there part-time in high school. Robert’s two sons shared a very similar path, working parttime before college and joining the sales department fulltime after graduating college. “I liked people, I liked the job as soon as I started doing it,” Kevin explained. “One of the aspects of this business I really enjoy is that you work with new people every day.” Kevin and Bob worked in sales together and worked their way up into management. Working at a family business may have had its challenges, but at the core of the business was a fundamental learning experience in the value of hard work. “One of the more valuable things I learned early on was to focus on what you need to do, avoid getting distracted, and keep the goal at the front of your mind,” Kevin said.

daughter Jillian, (L to R) Kevin Rafferty with grandson CJ and rty Raffe Bob r fathe his with rty Bobby Raffe

The goal the past decade has been relatively straightforward: growth. In 2000, the company underwent a rebranding and sold the Pontiac and GMC product line so that they were exclusively a Subaru dealership. Since then, Subaru as a brand has grown in volume and popularity around the world and has provided a wonderful opportunity for Rafferty to take advantage of. This past year marked the 11 th consecutive record year in sales for Subaru, and with hard work of their own, Rafferty Subaru has worked to match that rate of growth. “Their growth has been tremendous, and on a dealer side our challenge was how to capitalize on this growth, how to maximize our opportunities on the dealer level,” Kevin stressed. Today, both Kevin and Bob work as general managers of the business and feel very fortunate to have been a part of the growth that has come with their hard work and the growth of the overall brand. As the goals of the business have been met and outdone the past ten years, the team at Rafferty Subaru decided to do a massive renovation project for the building, making Rafferty one of the most state-of-the-art Subaru dealerships in the country. With the new renovation completed last November, the dealership now has double the square footage, twice the number of bays, a car wash complementary to any new car, a large luxurious waiting room with a coffee bar and a kids room, and a three-lane, climate-controlled car porch for customers to look at their options in comfort.

In addition to the newly renovated space, there are also now nearly 100 loaner cars for customers while they wait for larger tasks that may take several days. The investment in this service ensures that every customer will be taken care of and any long-term work will be as convenient as possible. “We had a tremendous builder and a fantastic architect,” Kevin raved about the renovation. “Many of us have been in the car business for 40 years, which helped us to make a great plan for developing the new dealership. Now we are poised to go into 2019 and beyond.” Walking into this new space, there is an obvious sense of upscale luxury in the size of the showroom and the sleek design, but also a passion for service and commitment to customer satisfaction. The waiting room is more like a social spot nestled inside a dealership, with a fireplace and inviting chairs. The management is walking the showroom introducing themselves to everyone as they walk by. The passion for work and for customer service is clear in the way every employee conducts themselves and the environment that they have crafted around them. When Robert Rafferty first started his dealership in 1977, Newtown Square was still a rural town with a relatively small population. Over the years, as Rafferty grew and the Subaru brand grew, Newtown Square also underwent a renovation and a rebuild. With the new properties at the Ellis Preserve and massive housing projects being completed around town, the community is in a boom phase that has greatly encouraged the growth of business and industry. There is a serious love of community at Rafferty Subaru, with one great example being their animal rescue events that happen multiple times per year. Several dogs from local shelters have made appearances in Rafferty commercials over the years, and Kevin is proud to say that every dog that has been featured was then rescued. From that original relationship with the shelters, Rafferty would go on to host animal adoption events to support these local shelters. The events are held in the dealership, and people from all over Newtown Square come to adopt an animal or donate to the shelter. The employees all love the events and look forward to them every time. Many employees have rescued animals from these events, and the whole team has been able to get to know the dogs and cats over time. The most recent event was in partnership with the Providence Animal Center, and they are already planning on a new event soon.

The newly remodeled Rafferty Subaru Showroom

Rafferty has always been a generational family business. When Robert Rafferty was starting the business in the late 1970s, Kevin and Bob were in high school already itching to work for the family business and help in any way they can. Up until his passing last April, Robert would come to the dealership and talk to all of the customers, making sure they were happy and their needs were being met. “My father was always focused on making people happy, whatever it took. He worked in the business over 60 years, and his love for it was always obvious,” Kevin spoke proudly of his father. Bob’s son, named Bobby, works as the Pre-Owned Manager for Rafferty Subaru, and both Bob and Kevin are proud of how hard he works for the company. Kevin’s daughter Jillian has been the face of Rafferty on TV and the voice on radio since she was a child. The people of Newtown Square have seen her grow up, noticed her engagement ring and came in to say congratulations, saw her TV spots when she was pregnant and will see a new ad soon with her eight-month old son, CJ. “Jillian has been amazing, she has happily been the face of the dealership her whole life. She comes off so genuine and has promoted family values by just being who she is,” Kevin dote. Jillian’s lifelong commitment to representing Rafferty Subaru is a symbol of this exceptional dealership. From the sales department to the service team, from insurance to upper management, there is a true sense of family and a genuine interest in making people happy. The new building may be bigger and sleeker with more features, but what makes it come to life is that authenticity at the heart of the company that has persisted and grown for 42 years. NS

Expert Contributor by Dr. Heather Sefried The Joint Chiropractic - Newtown Square

Can Chiropractic Care help with

Plantar Fasciitis? Plantar fasciitis affects many people, and traditional care often does not provide effective relief from symptoms. Chiropractic care is an excellent holistic treatment plan for the condition, and has proven to reduce symptoms and improve quality of life for patients. Much of the pain in the foot is inflammation, and chiropractic care helps to reduce inflammation and improve the flexibility of motion in the foot.

What is Plantar Fasciitis? Plantar fasciitis is a condition that refers to a lingering pain on the bottom of the foot. The stabbing heel pain associated with plantar fasciitis is frequently experienced when you get out of bed in the morning and take your first steps. As you continue moving throughout the day, your heel pain may decrease for brief periods of time but the pain may once again intensify

after long periods of standing or sitting. Plantar fascia is a long band of thick, fibrous tissue that extends along the bottom of your foot from your heel to your toes. When this tissue becomes inflamed, irritated or damaged, it can cause intense heel pain.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis? Most of the time, Plantar Fasciitis occurs when the ligament that supports the arch becomes strained. However, there are a number of precipitating factors that can lead to inflammation of the plantar fascia. Some of these things include: • Over-pronating (rolling your feet inward when you walk) • Having flat feet (or, conversely, high-arched feet) • Being overweight • Standing for long periods of time in bad shoes • Having tight Achilles tendons • Sudden increase in repetitive stress activities, such as running or cycling • Wearing the wrong shoes • Hip misalignment

Fertilization Is Necessary For Lawns In Our Area

Let us start with the most overlooked fact regarding turfgrass management in the Pennsylvania area. Turfgrasses are not native to this area. Pennsylvania would revert to forest if we stopped mowing our lawns. There is too much moisture in the soil and air throughout the year for grasses to thrive. Conversely, the midwestern states such as Iowa, Nebraska, Illinois, Kansas with deep topsoil and moderate rainfall are ideal for growing grasses, especially corn, a member of the grass family. Therefore, in our area, a lawn or athletic field will need special attention. The goal of any turfgrass management program is to suppress unwanted plants (weeds) and stimulate the turf. In order for turfgrass to look its best in our area, it will need special inputs so it can outcompete the weeds and withstand diseases. Like animals, plants need food. Photosynthesis is the process whereby plants make food using the energy of the sun. Turfgrasses use nutrients in the soil to aid in the process of photosynthesis. Soils need to have the capacity to hold nutrients and need regular inputs of nutrients through fertilization applications. Without fertilization, soils cannot provide the necessary nutrients to aid in photosynthesis and other metabolic processes.

Additionally, if the soil pH is too acidic (a condition common in our area), the soil will not have the ability to hold nutrients for the turfgrass roots to uptake. Every fertilization plan should include testing the soil’s pH and making adjustments. Even with the proper nutrients, turfgrass will have a difficult time throughout the year outcompeting weeds, withstanding pests and avoiding diseases. A solid turfgrass management plan for a lawn, athletic field or golf course will include plans for these problems. The first step in the spring for preventing weeds involves the use of a preemergent. A pre-emergent is a product that is applied at the onset of the season that prevents annual weed seeds from germinating. Other times throughout the year, it will be necessary to address broadleaf perennial weeds, insects, and diseases. A turfgrass management company, whether it is a lawn care, landscaping or athletic field maintenance company, should have a program that they follow that will provide you with the proper care of your lawn or field. Talk with a knowledgeable lawn care company to understand the processes that they use to keep your lawn in its best shape throughout the year. NS

Bringing People Together by Bob Blaisse Publisher

The Women Bringing People Together By Bringing Us Our Magazine Each Month March is Women’s History Month. We’ll be learning about the contributions of women to events in history. But this annually declared tribute is intended to also shine a spotlight on women who make contributions to our contemporary society. I know a dozen women who have recently contributed to our contemporary society in Newtown Square by Bringing People Together. They’re business owners who are among our advertising sponsors who make it possible for Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine to be mailed to you each month for free. You may recognize their names, and the names of their businesses, but there’s something you may not know. The business leaders of our community who choose to use their limited marketing budgets for something more than business advertising should all be recognized and rewarded. They chose to sponsor us, as residents of Newtown Square, by becoming Advertising Sponsors of Newtown Square’s monthly magazine. Among our sponsors, for their contributions to “our contemporary society,” we have these ladies to thank:

Everyone knows Sheila Turner, owner of From the Top Studio of Dance. Sheila’s 30+ years sponsoring our community, instructing students of dance, and winning regional and national competitions, is legendary in Newtown Square. Now everyone can look forward to reading Sheila’s regular Expert Contributor feature articles on dance for fun and fitness for all ages. Most Newtown Square homeowners also know Sarah Forti: Newtown Square’s Resident Real Estate Expert. As a top Forti performer for Keller Williams Homes Realty, Sarah has agreed to serve as our Expert Contributor of regular feature articles related to buying and selling homes in Newtown Square. Now, everyone who reads Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine has an Expert Realtor as their Newtown Square neighbor. Next month look for another new woman-owned business in the pages of our magazine. Our newest sponsor is the Queen of Clean, Robin Cutler, owner of Cleanbusters: Newtown Square’s best-kept secret for a clean home. Robin, you’re in great company with these ladies who are Bringing People Together as sponsors of Newtown Square’s magazine, and we are all better for it!

Two more business leaders, well-known women in Newtown Square, have agreed to sponsor our magazine this month and contribute as expert contributors, helping our magazine to grow in page count and content.

Southeastern PA Orchid Society Meetings and Events Written by William Keating

F

ounded in 1947, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Orchid Society (SEPOS) is a non-profit organization comprised of a diverse group of people who share a common interest in the plant family known as Orchidaceae-Orchids. The society promotes the enjoyment of orchids and the protection of orchid habitat through education, conservation and research. We meet monthly from September through June. SEPOS members include novices, casual growers, windowsill growers, under light growers, greenhouse, and professional growers. Visitors are always welcome.

SEPOS is recognized as one of the more active orchid societies and has one of the largest show tables at each meeting. We usually have 100 or more plants on the show table at any given meeting. We also enjoy the accredited American Orchid Society (AOS) judges who are members. The judges evaluate all the plants and award selected plants and explain the reasons for their selection. Prior to the main meeting, we have a beginners class to educate and answer questions from new orchid enthusiasts. At the main meeting, we have a guest speaker chosen from among the most knowledgeable orchid personalities from around the world. Refreshments are included. SEPOS hosts one of the largest international Orchid Shows in the Northeast.

This annual show runs April 5 -7 in Hall E. at the Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, PA. It occupies approx. 12,000 square feet. Visit the SEPOS website for more information at www.SEPOS.org. M

George Paxos Photo by Jody Robinson

George Paxos, owner of Firepoint Grill, finds success in focusing on the details. You could say that George Paxos has lived out the classic American success story. He moved to the United States from Greece as a young child after the death of his father and quickly started working to support his family. From newspaper delivery routes to cooking in restaurants, Paxos started small. He worked his way up in multiple fields, and fell in love with working in a kitchen. At the young age of 15, Paxos knew that he wanted to open his own restaurants someday. By the age of 20, Paxos had done just that. In 1980, he opened the Candlelight Inn in Bethlehem, PA, a location that is still in operation today (rebranded as Blue Grillhouse). Blue is one of five successful Paxos Restaurants currently under George’s ownership, including Firepoint Grill in Newtown Square, which opened in late 2016. “The goal at all of our restaurants is threefold,” says Paxos, “to provide our guests with great food, great service, and an enjoyable atmosphere.” This approach has resulted in five unique restaurant concepts with elegantly designed interiors, signature menus serving only the freshest ingredients, and impeccable service from friendly staff.

At Firepoint, the newest of the Paxos Restaurants, guest can order off a large menu of wood-fired items, including handmade pizza, free range organic rotisserie chicken and grilled dishes. Starters and salads are equally memorable, as is a classically inspired cocktail menu and rotating draft beer list. The spacious restaurant interior is modern with industrial touches, and a seasonal outdoor patio provides a perfect ambiance for summer dining. Paxos is proud to have created a culture that not only impresses guests, but also supports a hard-working staff. Paxos Restaurants has been a recipient of the Morning Call’s “Top Workplace” award every year since 2015, and Paxos himself is quick to acknowledge the importance of teamwork among staff members. Having worked as a dishwasher, a chef, a manager, and everything in between, Paxos knows that every member of a restaurant team needs to give 100%, 100% of the time. By focusing on exceeding expectations at every turn, Paxos and the team at Firepoint Grill are creating more than just a meal; they deliver an experience you’ll want to relive over and over again. People in Places: Marian Wellington of GWFC by Craig Whitney Marian Wellington has been a member of the General Women’s Federation Club for over 40 years and continues to rave about the fellowship and the great service that the club has provided to the people of Newtown Square. 2019 will mark 50 years in Newtown Square for Marian, and she is as excited as ever to give back to the community through this organization. The General Women’s Federation Club (GWFC) was founded in 1890 by Jane Cunningham Croly and other women’s clubs around the country. Croly was denied admittance to an allmale club in 1868, and decided to create her own club that would give back to the community and bring the local women together. Since then, the GWFC has grown to the point where the members around the world raise $40 million per year and donate 8 million service hours. “It’s a wonderful organization,” Marian raved. “The foundational motto of the club is ‘what can I do in my community that will benefit them?’” The Newtown Square Chapter of the GWFC was chartered in 1947 by a few women at the time, including Fay Weeks who was a Newtown Square Resident for over 80 years. Marion is pictured with Fay in the photograph with the article. The

Fay Weeks (L ) and Marian Wellington (R )

GWFC has donated scholarships to students in the Marple Newtown school district, money to the fire company and the public library, provided food to the emergency food center at Saint Mark’s, and Marian is especially proud of the work that has been done giving food, clothing and toiletries to the new domestic violence shelter for women and children. “Not only do I give service and my time, but the fellowship and support I get from fellow members is also very fulfilling. We have a common purpose, to help our communities all over the United States,” Marian explained. Everyone at Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors thanks Marian for her enthusiasm for life and her lifelong commitment to the service of others. The local GWFC meets monthly for lunch to discuss plans for service activities and generally connect as a group. Anyone interested in joining can call Marian at 610-353-1079. NS
