In Newtown Square, we start the month off with our traditional Marple Newtown July 4th Parade. And our photographer Shannon Locher has provided us a beautiful cover photo of The Alberti Family, taken while they vacationed in Ocean City, NJ. So, it should come as no surprise that the themes of our July Edition are patriotism and summertime fun. This month, we also welcome 5 New Sponsors who have joined our magazine family by investing their limited marketing budgets in the residents of Newtown Square, to help grow our hometown magazine. Three will also be serving as Expert Contributors: Delaware Valley Septic, Sewer & Storm; Carpet Warehouse; and Newtown Square’s new community gym Retro Fitness (which, by the way, is offering super membership advantages until they open next month). Weinstein Bath & Kitchen Showroom and Chateau Blu Hair Studio have also committed their resources as new advertising Sponsors coming on board this month to grow our magazine over the next year. Please, let these new Sponsors and all our advertising Sponsors know how much you appreciate their decision to make an investment in us and in our Newtown Square community. I also want to thank our Expert Contributor, Dr. Heather Sefried, owner of The Joint Chiropractic of Newtown Square, for her extraordinary gift to our community announced in The Joint’s ad this month: A FREE initial Chiropractic visit for any and every Newtown Square resident! While proof of Newtown Square residency is required, if you’re reading this, you’re likely a resident of Newtown Square. So, come out to The Joint in the Newtown Square Shopping Center, to thank them for being a hometown Sponsor, and claim your free chiropractic adjustment if you live in Newtown Square. Happy 4th of July everyone.

HEALTHY
Drinking Habits for Summer Let’s be honest, there may not be a truly “healthy” option when it comes to cocktails and wine. But you don’t need to completely forego your healthy summer habits when looking to indulge. Certain tricks and habits can help you quench your thirst responsibly, and in a healthier way. Low ABV (low alcohol content) and low calorie cocktails are on trend and easy to find. Ketel One Vodka has introduced a new low calorie, no carb and no GMO line called Ketel One Botanicals. There are three flavors: Peach & Orange Blossom, Grapefruit & Rose and Cucumber Mint. Infused with all-natural botanicals, a standard 1.5-oz serving contains only 73 calories, compared to almost 100 calories in the standard serving of regular vodka. Mix with club soda and add fresh garnishes like blueberries and mint. Using fresh and nutritious garnishes like antioxidant rich berries are great ways to get in a serving of fruit. If you are looking to add a little sweetness to your drink, you can muddle the berries and/or use .25oz of agave nectar. Speaking of measurements, every cocktail-enjoying household should have a jigger. Jiggers are what bartenders use to measure ingredients in cocktails, and will help you measure out that standard 1.5oz serving. If you are counting calories, you should always measure your drinks. Some other low-calorie alcohol options include Stoli Elit vodka, which serves up an extra dry

martini for under 200 calories, and Don Julio Blanco tequila. Squeeze yourself some fresh lime juice, add a splash of agave nectar, and you have yourself a “skinny” margarita! If you prefer a glass of wine (or three), try looking for “Natural” and/or Minimal Intervention wines. These wines are typically from very small producers who aim to leave a small carbon footprint. Many wine regions in the US have loads of little wineries making wine this way: without the usual manipulation and additives. Planet Oregon Wines from the Willamette Valley, OR is a great vineyard to consider, and is available for purchase in PA. Also look for wines made from grapes that are farmed biodynamically. The idea of biodynamics is that everything in the universe is interconnected: from vines on the ground to the moon, planets and stars. Biodynamic viticulture (grape growing) is the practice of balancing these relationships using a holistic view of agriculture. If you tend to prefer organic products, these wines are for you. Lastly, always try to stick to the golden rule when it comes to cocktails: “everything in moderation.” Remember, the trick to staying properly hydrated is a glass of water before and after each drink. Please drink responsibly!

The Albertis: Beach-Bound for the Summer
Tracy and Greg on the beach in Ocean City, NJ
Greg and Tracy were in Avalon, New Jersey, with separate friend groups in the summer of 1995 when they first met. The groups hit it off one day and ended up at Princeton Bar and Grille later that week, a restaurant that is still there today. After a fun week full of new friends and the summer waves, the two went their separate ways for several months. Once they reunited in Philadelphia, it was full speed ahead. Greg grew up in Broomall, and has never left. It is something he is very proud of. “I’ve lived in three homes, none of them have been more than three miles from the home I grew up in,” Greg said. The Newtown Square area has been his home forever, and it was an easy decision to stay here to start a family.
by Craig Whitney Photography by Shannon Lynn Photography www.ShannonLynnPhotography.com
“It’s a unique destination, 20 mintues from the airport and the city, and 10 minutes from farms,” Greg said. “And the people, a lot of them stay their entire lives. It’s really cool to show up for basketball or baseball and recognize 3 or 4 parents you went to high school with.” “Many people are the original owners of these homes, along with young families,” Tracy added. “We love the neighborhood. Everybody steps up. It’s a very familyfriendly place to live.” Tracy is originally from West Deptford, New Jersey, which isn’t exceptionally far unless you ask one of the locals born and raised in Delaware County. “People tease me that I wasn’t born and raised in Delco,” Tracy laughed. “But I’ve been here longer than I was in Jersey.” Tracy may not be originally Delco, but she married into it in June of 1998. The two were rising in their careers: Tracy in dental sales and Greg in insurance marketing. Tracy began as a Dental Hygienist and made her way into sales several years after graduation. Greg was working as a senior officer for a large credit union, eventually switching to insurance marketing. Continued on page 8

years, they get to stay at the beach for the entire summer. Because of Greg’s flexible work schedule and everyone else’s year based around school, they get to all be down the shore together most days. “There is something really relaxing about being down there,” Tracy raved. “You almost forget about your worries. You’re not thinking about all of the stuff you have at home. It’s a great chance to breathe, take in every moment and enjoy the day.” “My favorite thing is to wake up at the beach and have coffee on the deck with my wife,” Greg said. “It’s different being on the deck at the beach, with the ocean breeze.”
Siblings, John and Alli smiling together
In 2001, Alli (short for Alexandria) was born. John was born three years and five days later. Once John was born, Tracy made the decision to stay at home with the children full-time. As soon as Alli started at Culbertson Elementary School, Tracy began volunteering as often as possible. She was a part of the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) at school; was team mom for all of the sports leagues they participated in; and doubled her volunteer hours when John joined her at Culbertson.
For the next two months, with the warm morning air rolling in from the ocean and Greg and Tracy with a fresh cup of coffee in their hands, the beach will be home. But being a native of the Newtown Square area, Greg has a special love of home. And all four of the Albertis have been so involved in the community over the years that Newtown Square holds a very special place in all of their hearts. Even with the months of bliss ahead of them, in September they will be itching to get back to their true home.

“Tracy and I did everything we could,” Greg explained. “I was an Assistant Coach on nearly every team my son was on, and Tracy was the team mom. We would even hop into the snack bar some nights and start making all the kids food for after the game.” For many years, Alli danced with From the Top Dance Studio, directed by Shelia Turner, known to readers as an Expert Contributor to this magazine. She enjoyed that performing arts activity from a very young age until the end of middle school. She then went to the Academy of Notre Dame, where she joined their dance program and also the Cross Country team. This year, Alli was a freshman at the University of South Carolina. Since John was very young, he’s been passionate about baseball. The time of year doesn’t matter: John finds a way to play. “He wants to play as long as he can,” Tracy stated. “If possible, he’ll be playing when he’s 40.” John has been a part of Newtown Edgmont Little League since around age 4. He now participates in the Babe Ruth League. When that league is in its offseason, John pitches for the Philadelphia Whiz Kids, a travel team that plays all over the tri-state area.

The drive to improve and grow is something that runs in the family. They all try to be healthy, whether it means going to the gym regularly or preparing healthy meals for the week. With all of the hobbies and weekend activities lined up for everyone, it’s impressive that they find the time. “We don’t have a lot of downtime. Keeping busy is what keeps us young,” Tracy said. The one thing that manages to slow the Albertis down is the beach. The Jersey Shore, which has been a constant since the day Greg and Tracy met, has gradually become a bigger part of their lives. Cool Off Those
Overheated Electric Bills Summer’s here and you probably have already cranked up your air conditioning to cope with unseasonably hot days. Soon you’ll notice a spike in your monthly electric bill. The spike may be unnecessarily high due to various mistakes people make, including: • Dirty filters. HVAC filters should be changed four times a year. Dirty filters restrict air flow, reducing efficiency and jacking up energy bills. Longer term, dirty filters contribute to equipment breakdown. Most filters are inexpensive and this is something most homeowners are capable of doing themselves, but surveys have found that fewer than half of them bother to do so. • A common cause of air conditioners working too hard is open windows and screen doors while the air conditioning is on. Many people like to sleep with windows open during cool evenings, but forget to close the windows when they turn on the a/c during daytime. Or they fail to close them tightly. You can understand how this wastes money. • Some homes feel like walking into a freezer. You are entitled to control your home’s climate to your personal comfort level. Just realize that each degree of temperature represents about 3% of energy consumption. Thus, if you raise the thermostat setting from 70 to 75, you will save about 15% on your energy bill. • If you have to turn the thermostat down to feel comfortable, the problem may not be with your body, but refrigerant slowly leaking out of the system. A technician will know how to check for leaks and repair them in an environmentally safe manner. • A simple energy saving tip is to keep shades and draperies drawn on the sunny side of the house. This can save 10-20% of the cost of cooling on a hot summer day. • Dirt, leaves and other debris accumulates over time, reducing system efficiency and life span. Periodically throughout the summer, you should check for shrubbery growth around the outside condenser and keep it trimmed.
• Technicians frequently discover leaks in ductwork that often aren’t readily apparent to the untrained eye. Leaky ducts exposed to attics or outside air can have the same effect as an open window. They can be routinely detected and eliminated, reducing a home’s fuel consumption by as much as 20%. We are all looking for a responsible and economical way to comfortably air-condition our homes. Employing smart energy steps as well as having maintenance performed on your equipment by a qualified technician will help you achieve this goal! NS

Business Profile
A Father -Son Business in Newtown Square by Craig Whitney Photos courtesy of Shannon Lynn Photography
Scott and Ray Magness are the father-and-son team behind Scott’s Fireplace Products
Scott’s Fireplace Products is a father-son business that has been part of Delaware County for over 30 years. Scott Magness became the Owner in 2009, and his son Ray became a Manager and Salesman for the company in 2011. With Scott’s years of experience in the field, Ray’s youthful enthusiasm in the store, and a skilled team firmly in place, the company has thrived for a decade in this community.
“I enjoy working with people and solving problems,” Scott said. “If people don’t know how gas lines are run, they say things like ‘Are you sure you can do that?’ I explain to them how it can be done, and they often seem amazed not only that I actually did it but did it efficiently.”
Scott’s Fireplace Products specializes in gas fireplaces, from vent free to vented to direct vent. They also offer products such as custom glass door enclosures that could be made for any type of fireplace. For outdoor products, Scott’s carries a gas grill line and can also install a wide variety of gas fire pits and all related accessories. Scott Magness is also an expert plumber. While in high school, he learned that trade from his uncle. The value of working with his hands was instilled in Scott early, and in 1987, he started his own plumbing business to serve the Delaware County region. Scott soon began adding gas fireplace installation and service to his offerings, something not offered by most other plumbers because installation can be advanced depending on the setup of the house, and the skills involved can be unique to gas fireplaces. Scott saw a strong growing demand for gas fireplaces and customers looking for a knowledgeable and reliable local gas fireplace sales and service. That combination prompted him to specialize in gas fireplaces.
Robert DeYoung was the original owner of the fireplace company, formerly DeYoung’s Fireside Shoppe, which started in 1985. The whole Magness family has been close with Mr. DeYoung and his family for many years. Scott worked as an installer, and in 2009, he got the opportunity to take over the business. The transition to ownership was made easier thanks to Mr. DeYoung, who worked under Scott in the beginning stages after Scott took ownership. Mr. DeYoung even helped mentor Scott’s son Ray when he wanted to join the business. Ray attended Haverford High. He then took several business courses that were very formative for his professional trajectory. Ray had an understanding of marketing and advertising and an appreciation for the value of labor, passed down through generations. This made him a perfect fit for the role of in-store management and sales. Scott offered Ray the position, and while Scott worked as Owner and Installer, Robert DeYoung helped train Ray. “Mr. DeYoung helped me get my feet wet in this industry,” Ray explained. “His wisdom helped me latch onto it, and his enthusiasm gave me enthusiasm.” Ray spends much of his time in the office, talking with prospective customers about their needs. That’s the part of the job that he enjoys the most, building a relationship with each customer, getting a sense of who they are, and finding the fireplace that would best suit them. “I like talking to people, learning their style, understanding their vision, and hopefully exceeding their expectations with our products,” Ray stated.
Some of the many items Scott's Fireplace Products offers

The relationship does not end at the store, and that’s something both Ray and Scott take very seriously. Scott’s Fireplace Products is a full-service company, and after a customer purchases a product, Scott and his team will install it. Customers can then choose to receive regular product maintenance.
“It’s important to us that we are a one-stop shop,” Scott emphasized. “These products need service, and we provide maintenance as an additional service so that any product we provide will have a full and efficient life.” The need for regular maintenance is something Scott and Ray have had to emphasize over the years because many people mistakenly think gas fireplaces don’t need to be cleaned or serviced. There are many benefits to gas fireplaces: They provide consistent heat at a set temperature; they’re more efficient; and they require much less cleaning than wood fireplaces. But that does not mean that the product does not need to be cleaned and serviced. Especially in a home with pets, gas fireplaces need to be taken apart and cleaned every two to three years. Otherwise, the fireplace could emit fumes or break down. This is true for all gas fireplaces, but especially for vent-free units. This is just one example of a conversation Ray will have with customers in the store, explaining the details of the product and proudly offering the full range of services. The satisfaction of a job well done isn’t truly complete until they can see the same fireplace still working well years down the road for the family Ray met when they first came into the store. For the past 10 years, Scott has seen his business develop around the Newtown Square community, and for the past 8 years, he has shared the joy with his son Ray. Scott and his wife Sundey live in Havertown, and Ray lives in Drexel Hill with his fiancée Amanda, their daughter Juliana, and their dog Milo. The Magness family also includes Colin and Troy, Ray’s younger brothers. From plumbing to gas fireplaces, Scott Magness has created and enjoyed an interesting career. He and his son Ray, along with the team at Scott’s Fireplace Products look forward to keeping Newtown Square and the entire Delaware County region warm for years to come during those cold winter months. What a Difference A Year Makes When Newtown Residents Reward Hometown Sponsors Next month is the one-year anniversary of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors. Since our first edition, leading businesses have come forward to be part of something big, something which has taken hometown pride in Newtown Square to a whole new level. Our hometown magazine, delivered by mail, and online at www.NewtownSquare.com, is a hit! When I ask, readers often tell me: “I thank the magazine Sponsors every chance I have, and try to do business with the Sponsors as a first choice because I love the magazine, and I know they make it possible.” Wow! That’s it. Reader Leadership and hometown loyalty; that’s what makes our Newtown Square magazine successful at Bringing People Together. In what’s become our tradition, I’m asking everyone to reach out in gratitude to our Sponsors, particularly this month, as we welcome five new Sponsors. Call them or stop in, but please try to thank our Sponsors for sponsoring you, as a Newtown Square resident, for sharing their expertise, and making our hometown magazine possible. Consider rewarding Sponsors by choosing to do business with them first, because of their choice to sponsor Newtown Square residents.
One of our new Sponsors this month is a familiar name, Weinstein Supply, the local wholesale and retail seller of plumbing & heating supplies in the Lawrence Park Industrial Park. How wonderful is it that the Weinstein Showroom, the new family-friendly, state-of-the-art, bath and kitchen showroom, is open, and that Weinstein has joined Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors as a new Sponsor. This is great news for Do-It-Yourselfers looking for Bath & Kitchen ideas, and all homeowners in search of design ideas and maybe even a recommendation for a local contractor. Weinstein’s slogan is Love Your Bath & Kitchen, but Weinstein clearly also loves Newtown Square too! Let’s love Weinstein back. See the Weinstein ad this month and come out to visit the new Weinstein Bath & Kitchen Showroom in the Lawrence Park Industrial Park to thank Weinstein for sponsoring Newtown Square. No doubt you also know another new Sponsor, “The Professionals” of Carpet Warehouse, with its showroom also located in the Lawrence Park Industrial Park. Everyone knows Jim Casar of Carpet Warehouse. And why not, Jim’s been

As the owners of Del Val Septic, Sewer & Storm, and our new Expert Contributors of features that will help keep the water flowing in our homes, TJ and David are the right guys for the right jobs when it comes to septic system inspections, installation, repair, replacement and maintenance. When I came to know TJ and Dave, and how they run their business with integrity and are so involved in our community, I was not surprised they also wanted to become Sponsors at the party that’s Bringing People Together in their hometown magazine. If you want to keep your parties going this summer, consider having your septic system checked by our new experts from Delaware Valley Septic, Sewer & Storm. We also welcome Newtown Square’s new Community Gym, Retro Fitness, as another new Expert Contributor and community Sponsor of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors.Until their new 14,400 sq. ft., stateof-the-art gym with a wide variety of cardio equipment opens next month at the Marville Shopping Center at Edgemont Square, Retro Fitness owners Geno Truono and Luigi Truono are fitting right in to our community while offering tours and presale pricing with lifetime benefits at Retro Fitness, but only during construction until the gym opens. A n d l a s t l y, w e welcome Newtown Square’s well-known hair stylist, and person of service to our community, Milena Dobrikovic, and her Chateau Blu Hair Studio as a new sponsor this month. While Milena and her stylists are recognized for their skilled hair design, in the hair studio where comfort and luxury come together at St. Albans Circle, readers may not know about Milena’s service contribution to various Newtown Square community events. And Milena likes it that way. But she can’t hold me back from thanking her and Chateau Blu Hair Studio for coming out to the party that’s Bringing People Together through our hometown magazine for Newtown Square residents. Thank you, Milena. Your hair clients know you well. And anyone looking for a new stylist should check out Chateau Blu Hair Studio at St. Albans Circle.

Nick on Nick by Craig Whitney
Our own Nick D’Ambrosio is featured on the re-imagined Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader in June, representing our town on primetime. Nick is 11 years old and just graduated from Russell Elementary School. He has two sisters, who are both incredibly proud of his achievements. His twin sister Rachel graduated 5th grade with him, and his older sister Marissa currently attends Marple Newtown High School. Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader is returning to television, now hosted by John Cena and airing on Nickelodeon. There will be dancing, singing, games, and overall hilarity as contestants try to win a $100,000 prize and prove that they are, in fact, smarter than a 5th grader. We got the chance to speak with Nick about his experience.
What was your favorite part about filming 5th Grader? “I loved the energy of the studio audience. We could hear them cheering as we ran through the tunnel to come on stage! It was so exciting. With unscripted TV you never know what is going to happen! I had so much fun teaching John Cena some dance moves and laughing at all the fun things that happened.”
What was it like doing the show with the cast and John Cena? “It was great being able to have fun with John Cena. The best part was getting to know him for real because he wasn’t playing a part in a movie. He was being himself and so was I. He’s a really good person and now I can say we know each other. He likes to help people and so do I, we have that in common. I hope to be an Eagle Scout one day.”
Broomall's own Nick D’Ambrosio on Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader
“I also got to do something really special on the show, you will see later in the season, that was my most favorite. I can’t spoil the surprise, you will have to watch and see!”
What should people look forward to when watching Nickelodeon’s new version? “The new version is definitely a must see! It’s hosted by John Cena and that brings a whole new vibe to the show. It’s a new set, it’s a whole new cast of classmates, and the game is played slightly differently. The contestants, John Cena and classmates get to talk more and do fun things as well as answer the questions. The class is full of kids that are really funny and talented as well as smart. Even if we don’t know the answer, you are still sure to be entertained! It’s a game show that the whole family can play and enjoy together.” Everyone at Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors congratulates Nick on this amazing accomplishment. Win or lose, Nick had fun with show host John Cena, and also got to compete for a Grand Prize in a national spotlight. That requires a lot of bravery for anyone, let alone a 5th grader. Your town is very proud of you, Nick! NS

ADVANTAGES TO Having a Gas Fireplace
When you’re enjoying the warm summer sun and vacation with the family, it’s hard to think ahead to the cold winter months. But this is the best time to think about and start planning for that fireplace you’ve always wanted to have! If you have considered getting a fireplace in your home in the past, you probably thought about the different fireplaces available. Here are four advantages to choosing a gas fireplace.
1. Efficiency A natural gas fireplace is very energy efficient. It can save you up to 25% on your energy bill every month. Unlike a log fireplace, a gas fireplace gives off a constant and steady heat supply in your home. It will supplement your heating system and save you money on your bills. It’s a common misconception that you need to have a gas line connected to the house to install a natural gas fireplace. A professional should be able to show you a variety of options to get the efficient fireplace in your home that you’ve always wanted, whether you already have a line for natural gas or not.
Natural gas fireplaces come in many styles and designs. They are very clean and stylish and you won’t need to worry about smoke and ash. There are many different designs displaying natural logs and beautiful grates. It’s convenient because you will not need to add a chimney to your home for a gas fireplace. Gas fireplaces work on venting systems that will exclude the need for a chimney. The cost of installation for a gas fireplace is typically less than a traditional fireplace. It will increase the value of your home and add wonderful ambience to the room you had in mind.
3. Good for the Family A gas fireplace can be safer for a family. Potential sparks or embers flying out of the traditional fireplace can be nerveracking for parents of young children. The risk of fire is also significantly lower by the remote-controlled gas system.
4. Lower Maintenance Although it is a common misconception that gas fireplaces don’t need maintenance, they do need significantly less maintenance than a wood-burning fireplace. Namely, wood-burning fireplaces create creosote build-up that needs to be cleaned regularly as well as ashes from the firebox after every use. A good installation specialist will be able to give you a maintenance schedule to follow for a gas fireplace that will allow for safe operation and efficiency. There are many advantages to having a natural gas fireplace. If you’ve always wanted a fireplace in your home, maybe it’s time to start the process so that, by the time the cold weather is here again, you can be inside your home enjoying your new fireplace. NS

Ask Mr. Vickers Q&A with Marple-Newtown’s 103-Year-Old Neighbor
Eugene Vickers
Is your family still in the area?
For America’s birthday, we returned to Marple Newtown’s oldest veteran, Eugene Vickers. His years of wisdom serving in the military, raising a family, and keeping a positive faith-filled attitude through it all are an inspiration. We asked 103-year-old Mr. Vickers more about his life and what he might be able to share with us.
“Yes, I have a wonderful family. I have four daughters: Betty Jean, Barbara, Brenda and Beverly, all B’s. They have children, and some of their children have children now. We have a beach house in Ocean City where we all get together. I like the beach very much, not so much the sand anymore, but everything else.”
What advice can you give about using time wisely?
When did you serve in the military? “I served in the Navy during World War II, just as the war was breaking out and people were being drafted. Because I had a college degree, I went in as an officer. Things had to be done, and we were the ones to do them. I liked being out to sea. I was able to see the world while serving my country. I was in the Hawaiian Islands and the northern Pacific. The sunrises were especially beautiful over the Pacific. God has really made an amazing creation.”
“It’s very important to be a part of a church and give back. My time with Sunday School was always important to me. Church was always a big part of my life. We would have Sunday School in the morning, a young people’s meeting in the afternoon, then an evening service. And after the evening service, we would all eat together. I made the church and the church community a big part of my life, and that made all the difference.” NS

Citation on George Toms’ distinguished Service Cross Draft card for Clifford Murray
We celebrate Memorial Day, the memory of D-Day, the 4th of July, Veterans Day. The bedrock of each celebration is our freedom, and the men and women who fought and gave their lives for that freedom. During those occasions this year, while some WWII veterans remain among us, let us remember the local men from Marple and Newtown who gave their lives in that war.
Grave of William Yerger
George A. Toms: George is a graduate of Marple-Newtown High School. He was a radioman-gunner and was missing in action in the Battle of Midway on June 5, 1942. George was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement as a tail gunner in aerial combat during the Battle of Midway.
Melvin Doughten: Valedictorian of Marple-Newtown High School class in 1937, served in the U.S. Army’s 894th Tank Destroyer Battalion, and was killed in action in Italy on April 9, 1945. He is buried in the American Cemetery outside of Florence, Italy.
Malcolm Lee Watson: A corporal in Patton’s 318th Infantry, Malcolm had volunteered many times for reconnaissance duty. He was killed by German artillery on December 3, 1944 during General Patton’s push towards Germany, and is buried at the Lorraine American Cemetery in France. He was awarded the Bronze Star.
Harry Brooks Mackay: Attended St. Anastasia’s and Newtown Township’s schools. Harry died on April 2, 1944 at age 18 during the Anzio Beach Campaign. He was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously, and after the war returned home and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
William E. Yerger: A graduate of Marple-Newtown High School, class of 1932, Staff Sargent Yerger died August 12, 1945 while serving with the 12th Air Force in Naples, Italy. After the war, he was brought home for burial with his family at Cumberland Cemetery in Media.
Clifford Douglas Murray, Jr.: Only son of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Murray, Sr., Clifford joined the Army in February 1942 and saw action in the North African and Sicilian campaigns, in Italy and in France as a member of the First Infantry Division. He was killed in action in the Normandy invasion on June 16, 1944, and was buried at the American Cemetery in Normandy.
Lest we forget, there are others with local ties, and of course men and women who served and died in other wars. In remembering these local men who died in World War II, we do not slight the service of all of those who sacrificed, and who gave their lives, in service to our nation. 100 Years of
The American Legion by Craig Whitney The American Legion is celebrating its 100th birthday this year. Since its founding, it has successfully accomplished its Mission: To honor and care for veterans of the United States military. The American Legion Marple Memorial Post 805 has participated in many local activities that help military veterans feel cared for, both emotionally and medically. The American Legion was founded in March 1919, in Paris, France. US World War I military personnel were stationed in Paris and wanted to form an organization dedicated to four pillars of service and advocacy: veterans, military personnel, youth and patriotic values. Today, the American Legion consists of 55 departments in each of the 50 U.S. states, France, Mexico, the Philippines and Puerto Rico. Over the past 100 years, major accomplishments of the American Legion include the formation of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the GI Bill. Additionally, posts around the country donate 3.7 million hours of volunteer service annually; assist on more than 180,000 VA benefits claims; and donate 80,000 pints of blood. They also sponsor the Boy Scouts; provide college scholarships; and award medals to Junior ROTC students. The American Legion Marple Memorial Post 805 has been a major contributor to veterans of our community since the 1960s. Demetrius Spiropoulos serves as Post Commander in the Marple post, helping to organize activities and work with veterans. It
is a position he takes very seriously as an honor and privilege. “The American Legion is open to anyone who has honorably served in any of the five branches, in any capacity,” Demetrius explained. “We meet once a month, working to ensure that our veterans’ needs are met.” One of the more important needs on which the post focuses their service is veterans’ medical care through Veterans Affairs. In addition, they also help clean and replace American flags, and care for memorials and veterans’ cemeteries. For community outreach, the post has created programs such as the American Legion Award, which is given to two students from each local elementary, middle and high school for good citizenship. In addition, Post 805 and the American Legion support the community service projects of the several Boy Scout Troops chartered in Marple Newtown. “Scouting’s values parallel the American Legion’s values,” Demetrius explained. “Duty to God, duty to others, and good citizenship.” To celebrate the 100th birthday of the American Legion, the Marple post will be hosting a barbecue on Saturday July 13 at Noon. Everyone is welcome to come enjoy the festivities! This is an opportunity to help grow membership by spreading awareness of the American Legion’s programs. It’s also a time for local veterans to socialize and enjoy some good food and friends. NS

TIRE TIPS While colder months force people to think about tire conditions so they don’t get stuck in snow, drivers don’t relate low tire tread dangers to summer time. The truth is tires need good tread in all seasons. In the same way that deep tire tread helps wick away the snow to help the tire remain in contact with the road, in the spring and summer months good tire tread will wick away the water to prevent gliding on top of the water and maintaining control. Tread depth is measured in 32nds of an inch, typically new tires come with about 10-12/32nds of an inch of tread. Most states have a minimum tread depth specification. In Pennsylvania it’s 2/32nds or less indicates an unsafe tire. Other conditions like dry rot and road hazards may also condemn a tire even if the tread depth is good. There are built-in indicators on tires called wear bars, when the wear bars touch two adjacent treads, the tire is worn out. The penny trick is a good rule of thumb. If Lincoln’s entire head can be seen when placed upside down in the tread, you know you need a tire and you won’t have any surprises at

inspection time. Inspection stations use tread depth gauge readings in three different locations for an official depth-reading. Dry rot can be seen either on the sidewall of the tire as a cross-hatched pattern or lines of cracks around the cir-cumference of the tire, the deeper the cracks, the less safe the tire is. It’s best to let a professional determine if dry rot or side wall damage is safe enough to keep that tire in service. All vehicle manufacturers today specify what size, load range and speed rating should be used on each vehicle to maintain the correct ride and safety features designed into the vehicle. This information is on a decal located on the drive door frame area and also in the owner’s manual. Using the correct tire size is especially important in all-wheel and four-wheel drive vehicles to avoid drivetrain damage. Some high-end vehicles come with summer or performance tires, even allwheel drive SUVs. Manufacturers put these tires on to enhance the handling qualities of the vehicle. If this vehicle is only driven in the warm weather then all is well. If these vehicles are used year-round those summer tires may not stick to the road so well in the colder months raising control issues. In this case you can switch to all season performance tires as long as the size and speed rating specifications are followed. Ask your repair facility for details. Happy & Safe Motoring to All!

Expert Contributor by Sheila Turner From the Top Dance Studio
Lessons Beyond the Classroom It is easy to spot a well-trained dancer in the crowd – the one who stands just a bit taller, shoulders back, head high and most likely an alternating stance between 2nd and 4th positions. Whether it’s in the grocery store or a neighborhood party, dancers just “know.” But not all lessons learned in the classroom are as obvious. Dancing through your youth into adulthood offers limitless amounts of benefits that extend well beyond time spent in the studio. Here are just a few:

Confidence It is estimated that 75% of the population is terrified at the thought of getting on stage for an audience or even in front of co-workers. Ask a dancer, and they’ll hop right up there with a smile! The butterflies they feel? That’s excitement, not nerves. It’s the result of countless hours of hard work and preparation for performance day. They understand that their role as a dancer is to be the bridge that connects the art to the audience.
Balance We’ve all seen those viral videos of football players dressed in tutus leaping for laughs, right? Well the truth is that dance training can significantly improve an athlete’s performance on the field. Just ask Hall-of-Famer Lynn Swan or Herschel Walker and they’ll tell you that regular ballet lessons improved their focus, flexibility, agility and balance and that more and more NFL teams are installing ballet barres for their players to stretch. According to Sports Rec, “because dance training involves the memorization and constant repetition of precise steps, it can also help athletes become more coordinated. More than that, dance classes that focus on group routines can sharpen spatial awareness, which is crucial to sports that require athletes to track a tiny ball across a playing field that's dozens of yards long.”
Inclusion A dance studio offers a very unique opportunity for students to meet and form friendships with others outside their everyday circles. Often times, students in the same class are from different schools and have different backgrounds, personalities and abilities. Throughout the dance season, teachers encourage their students to not only work together as a team, but to trust, encourage and support each other, which in the end makes for some pretty amazing performances. These valuable lessons beyond the classroom significantly benefit dancers because these concepts and skills can easily be applied to future endeavors. They will stand tall and move through life with courage, confidence, poise and acceptance. Dance truly is a gift! Sheila Turner, owner of From the Top Studio of Dance, is a life-long resident of Newtown Square who teaches the fundamentals, techniques and performance of dance to youth and adults. Ten Tricks to Simplify Summer
CHANGING AMERICA ONE BLACK BELT AT A TIME
by Emma Riehl It’s summertime and the living’s easy. On lazy, sunny afternoons, the last thing you want to do is handle sticky popsicle messes, dig for lost sunglasses, or vacuum beach sand out of the back seat of your car. Also, who knew your ice cube tray had so many refreshing uses? Get in the summer spirit by simplifying your daily routine with these quick tips. 1. Use a coat hanger to store your sunglasses in your coat closet. Hook them over the base of the hanger so they don’t get lost or broken in your daily summer shuffle. 2. Clean out an old sunscreen bottle to store your valuables in at the beach. Twist off the cover and slide your items inside. Your phone, keys, and lip balm will stay sand-free.

3. Fill empty water bottles half-full with water then freeze. Add a summer beverage on top, and you have a chilled drink for the day. 4. Mix aloe gel with water and freeze in an ice cube tray. Use the aloe cubes as a refreshing sunburn treatment. 5. Use a cupcake liner as a popsicle drip tray by poking the popsicle stick through the middle of the liner. Say goodbye to sticky popsicle fingers and the mess that comes along with them. 6. Oragel (the dental gel bought at drugstores) takes the itch out of mosquito bites. Be sure to pack some on your next camping trip. 7. For easy ice cream sandwiches, slice a pint of ice cream and place the frozen discs between two cookies. Mix it up by choosing various flavors of cookies and ice cream. 8. Sprinkle baby powder on your sandy feet after a day at the beach. The sand will slough off without leaving any irritation. This is an essential tip when transporting sandy kids home from the beach. 9. Freeze coffee in an ice cube tray to turn your morning brew into a refreshing iced treat. By using pure coffee in the cubes, your chilled coffee won’t get watered down. 10. Spear fresh strawberries on a drinking straw to remove the green stem and make summer snacking simpler. Summer Fun
Camping Games By Chelsea Scott
Cornhole
If you’ve got a big group, this is a great game to set up as a tournament. Bean bags are tossed at a wooden board with a hole at the raised end. A bag on the board gets you one point, but in the hole fetches three points. First to 21 wins.
Nature Scavenger Hunt
Divide into teams or go it alone—your choice! Create a list of things to find in nature like a pine cone, heart-shaped rock, fossil, daisy, you get the idea. First to collect all the items wins.
“I’m Going on a Trip and I’m Bringing…”
Besides taking long walks in the woods, swimming and sitting around the campfire, some of my favorite memories from camping are the games we played as a family. Playing games is a great way to have fun while leaving electronics in the camper or tent. Check out these fun games to play while camping:
Horseshoes
Many campgrounds have horseshoe pits already, so test your accuracy and toss a few shoes. The rules are easy to find online.
BINGO
Gather everyone around the picnic table and pick the loudest person to call the game. Outside voices are welcome when you shout “BINGO!”
Flashlight Tag
Best played at night, this game is like regular tag except players are “tagged” by the beam of the flashlight held by whoever is “it.”
A great one to play around the fire at night, this game is played by each player listing an item they’re bringing on their “trip” that begins with each letter of the alphabet (starting with A and ending with Z). The trick is to remember everything— in order—and recite it when it’s your turn before adding another item to the list. The sillier the better! At the end you’ll have a list of 26 things and be laughing so hard your sides hurt.
Tic-Tac-Toe
No paper? No problem! Grab a couple sticks and play this classic by drawing in the dirt or sand. The gameboard is 9 squares made with two vertical and two horizontal lines. Exchange X and O marks until one person gets three in a row.

Newtown Square Homeowner’s Solution For Sewer Tie-In Savings There are TWO OPTIONS for Sewer Tie-Ins with Township Approval 1. Traditional 4" Gravity System
2. Directional Drilling System
Digging Down to The Sewer Main
Underground Horizontal Drilling
Pros • A Gravity System with a clean out, relies on gradually sloping pipelines for downhill sewage flow. • The sewage flows away from the property and into a sewer main, offering peace of mind for many years. Con • Installing a Gravity System will significantly disturb the homeowner’s landscaping.
Pros • A Directional Drilling System is installed by tunneling underground horizontally, under gardens, driveways and other man-made obstacles. • Installation requires far less disturbance of landscaping. Cons • A Directional Drilling System requires a duplex grinder pump with battery backup (in the event of power loss). • Directional Drilling Systems require bi-annual servicing and owner monitoring.
