Dear Friends & Neighbors, This summer it’s staycations: short trips to local destinations. And I’m OK with that. Our family will return to Longwood Gardens, spend weekends at the Splash Surf Club, and make day trips to the beach. We hope to walk Knobel’s Amusement Park, social distancing of course, for some pandemic stress therapy. I do need the sights, lights, sounds and tastes of summer. Just a little bit, please!

This issue launches our third year of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors. We made it through the pandemic, but I can’t say that for all our Sponsors. Some are still at risk due to reduced business. And yet, most continue their sponsorship into our third year Bringing People Together in print and online at www.NewtownSquareMag.com. It’s time. I can’t wait any longer to rally readers to now pay it forward. And so, this month in my Bringing People Together feature on page 14, I will try. Find out how Newtown Square can become like Bedford Falls for our Sponsors who empower us with hometown pride. This month, we’re empowered by two new Sponsors who also know the power our magazine has to promote local businesses’ brands. One new Sponsor literally empowers us: Countywide Generators, LLC, is based in nearby Broomall. Owner Steve DiTomo, a certified electrician who’s also certified to install and service industry-leading Generac home backup generators. Because Steve’s story had me thinking about what homebound times would be like without electric power, I asked Christina Manning to write a feature for our next issue, about how Countywide Generators empowers Newtown Square homeowners with backup electric power generators. Now, besides being able to empower us with uninterrupted electric power, Steve DiTomo and his team at Countywide Generators can also take some credit for powering up our hometown magazine. See Countywide Generators Ad on page 8. Our other new Sponsor also empowers us, to look our best. Sandra Cannon’s Corinthian on The Square Salon & Spa is well known as a Newtown Square day spa salon (next to R. Weinrich’s Bakery), but most are not yet aware Corinthian on The Square is now also a full medical-grade spa. We now have our Expert for occasional feature articles on Facial & Skin Treatments. Look for Corinthian on The Square Salon & Spa’s first ad on page 8 and look for Sandra Cannon’s first Expert Contributor feature article in the months ahead. With advertising Sponsors renewing their support of Newtown Square’s hometown magazine, and new Sponsors coming to the party this month, I know you’ll enjoy this latest August issue of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors.

The Sowti Family:
Cherishing Every Moment In Life This month, we’re pleased to acquaint you with Newtown Square Family Kevin and Roschi Sowti and their three children. Kevin was born in Iran and grew up in Dallas, Texas. He attended the University of Dallas, where he played rugby and made lifelong friends. He continued his education at New York Medical College, completing his postgraduate studies and then did his residency at Yale in Connecticut, specializing in Internal Medicine. Most recently, Kevin earned his MBA at St. Joseph’s University. Roschi was also born in Iran. When she was 12 years old, her family moved to Austria. After high school, she went directly into medical school at the University of Austria Medical College. Her specialized studies focused on Allergy and Immunology, and she graduated in 1999. She moved to England for a year, to start her residency. In 2002, Roschi moved to the US, to continue her Medicine-Pediatrics residency at Yale/Bridgeport Hospital. She continued her medical education from 2002 – 2006 in Philadelphia, to pursue a Neonatology fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). Kevin and Roschi met in Connecticut, at a 2005 winter solstice party. They immediately had in common the fact that they were both completing their residencies. They got married in 2006, in 6

Waterbury, CT. “We were both in scrubs,” Roschi recalled. “Kevin was on his lunch break and I drove from Philadelphia to the City Hall in Connecticut, to get our marriage certificate.” Getting away for their honeymoon required some logistical planning: Because Roschi was doing her fellowship in Philadelphia and Kevin was in Connecticut for his residency, they met in the Houston Airport, where they could board the flight to Mexico together and start their much-needed time off and quality time together. Now meet the three Sowti children: Jasmin, a creative and hardworking 13-year-old, will soon start 8th grade at Paxon Hollow Middle School. She enjoys performing in the Marple Newtown Performing Arts Musicals, as well as singing in both choir and select choir. “Jasmin is a wonderful writer and editor,” Roschi said. “She created a two-season show with family members as the actors!” Jasmin, along with her two younger siblings, has also produced a contribution to the Nocturnist Podcast, which captures the voices of people working in healthcare. Since the pandemic started, the topics have shifted. “I wanted my children to be a voice of hope,” explained Roschi, “and bring their positive attitudes to the situation.” Ella, an enthusiastic 9-year-old, will soon start 4th grade at Culbertson Elementary School. Like her older sister, Ella enjoys dancing, singing, acting and playing the piano. She loves taking
care of and spending time with the family cats, Fluffy and Felicia. Ella also acted in Jasmin’s show and contributed to the Nocturnist Podcast. Darius will soon start 3rd grade at Culbertson. He’s a fun-loving 7-year-old with a great sense of humor and loves playing with his Legos. Since late 2007, Dr. Kevin Sowti has worked at Chester County Hospital. He helped build the hospitalist program, a specialty dedicated to care for patients who are admitted through the hospital. Kevin serves as the Medical Director of the Hospital Medicine group and also serves as the Chief of Staff. “I wear many hats at the hospital, splitting my time between taking care of my patients and my administrative duties,” explained Kevin. “Working at Chester County Hospital, alongside my amazing partners, has been a great privilege. We all treat each other and our patients like family,” he added. Recently, he has been inspired to change how medical care is delivered, in the hope of reducing suffering. “I feel my calling is to improve the people around me, and my vocation as a physician is where I can make a difference and reduce inequalities.” Dr. Roschi Sowti is currently an Attending Neonatologist at Temple University Hospital and St. Christopher’s Hospital. She also teaches medical students, Pediatric Residents, Neonatal Fellows and physician assistant students as an Assistant Continued on page 8

Resident Feature Professor at Drexel College of Medicine. Her choice to specialize in Neonatal medicine was her first job after her fellowship, and it has proven to be a perfect match. “Helping babies take their first breath and being a witness to the birth of a new human is truly a privilege,” explained Roschi. She hopes to implement a new approach to the treatment of newborns suffering from Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, which affects babies whose mothers used opioids during pregnancy. “Our line of work can be very stressful and sad at times,” said Kevin and Roschi, “but we don’t bring the negatives into our home. We try to be fully present and cherish every moment in life.” The Sowti Family found their long-time home in Newtown Square in October 2010. “Driving past Newtown Square, I always felt a sense of pull,” Kevin said, “I even told my wife early on that this is where I want to live.” They fell so in love with Newtown Square and the community around them that they moved Kevin’s parents here from Texas. “Without my parents helping us with our kids,” Kevin explained, “we wouldn’t be able to balance work and life. It’s so nice to have family close by and we are extremely grateful for them.” Kevin and Roschi have also received amazing support from their neighbors. “Our next-door neighbors really helped us out the past few months when we had to work and didn’t have childcare.” In return, Kevin and Roschi offer their medical advice, which can occasionally include something like checking a neighbor child’s throat or ears to confirm a possible infection.

Roschi volunteers as a homeroom mom at Culberston, and enjoys running on the Goshen Trail, alongside Ridley Creek or even just around their neighborhood. In Kevin’s spare time, he enjoys riding his Harley Davidson motorcycles, working out at the gym and relaxing in his mancave in their basement. Every year, the Sowti Family travels to Vienna, Austria, to visit Rochi’s family and the historic sites. Unfortunately, this year, their trip was cancelled. Kevin and Roschi have used that time to stay focused on helping their patients. “Always think of your glass as half full, have a positive attitude, work hard and have fun,” said Kevin and Roschi. “Life is too short to sweat the small things.” The Sowti Family would like to share this special message to the community: “We are so grateful that in our community, everyone is mindful of social distancing and wearing face masks to stop the spread of COVID-19. We truly appreciate all the frontline and essential workers who have worked during the pandemic. We are also so grateful for the teachers who worked so hard teaching our kids while the adults were trying to navigate through uncharted territories.” NS

How Children Benefit from
by Lou Marvil Level Up Black Belt Academy
Martial Arts Training
When many people think of Martial Arts, they envision the action scenes from movies and TV, the violence of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) competitions, or perhaps a means of self-protection. The media has popularized those impressions, but under the surface, Martial Arts training provides many outstanding benefits, especially for children. By learning Martial Arts from a reputable instructor and studio that specializes in children’s instruction, the following benefits will permeate all areas of a child’s life: Fitness: Keeping kids healthy and fit requires that they’re frequently active and moving. Martial Arts classes provide physical training that will increase each student’s strength, endurance and flexibility. These important physical attributes are typically required for anyone to perform well in any sport. Martial Arts, which promotes heart health, is also a fantastic way to get kids off the couch — and off their electronic devices! Self-Confidence: This valuable character trait is gained by accomplishing small goals that combine to accomplish a longterm goal. If children are to take on bigger challenges, they must experience the powerful feeling of success that comes from mastering smaller challenges. Each small success serves as a stepping stone that eventually develops into massive self-confidence. The Martial Arts curriculum is designed to allow beginner students to experience success, and then the challenge increases after each new rank is earned. Martial Arts will provide a student with 12 belt advancements, from white belt through black belt, that serve as these successes.
the ball, and then have their body execute the catch, throw or swing with accuracy. Martial Arts training is one of the most beneficial things you will ever do for your child. Achieving one’s black belt is a highly revered accomplishment on a college application or a job resume. As you check out the Martial Arts schools in your area, speak with the instructor and also with parents whose children study there. If a school will not allow you to do those things, move on. NS

Concentration: This is a key part of Martial Arts training that benefits every aspect of a child’s life. If kids are expected to focus or concentrate at school and home, Martial Arts can help them learn the 3 Rules of Concentration: 1. Focus Your Eyes: When someone is speaking, maintain eye contact with them to show you are listening. 2. Focus Your Mind: Think about what is being said and how it applies to you and how you are going to use the information. 3. Focus Your Body: Keep your body still and under control. These same principles can be applied to every area of life. For example, a child playing baseball needs to keep their eyes on the ball, think about what they are going to do with

s n o i t a l u C ongrat August Sproul Lanes Student of the Month August Sproul Lanes Student of the Month Hope Noonan Photo courtesy of Hope Noonan
We’re pleased to announce that the August Sproul Lanes Student of the Month is Saint Anastasia School’s rising 8th grader Hope Noonan! To celebrate this recognition, Hope received a Certificate of Achievement and looks forward to enjoying her award: a “Pizza Bowl” party courtesy of Sproul Lanes, our Sponsor of this program. Hope has found several ways to use her time and talents to serve others. Sometimes that requires Hope to step out of her comfort zone and try something she’s not sure she’ll be good at. An example of such a learning experience is when as a 7th-grader, she played basketball for the first time, on her school’s basketball team. As a team player, Hope learned how to work with others to accomplish goals. Through repeated encouragement from her coach and teammates (who soon become her new friends), she learned that playing her part on the team was important even when she missed attempts to score points. And during a field trip to the U.S. Supreme Court with her coach and teammates, she also learned that, as she expected, there really IS a supremely huge basketball court in that famous landmark! Another way Hope serves others is by sharing her beautiful singing voice in theatrical and other performances. Last summer, she participated in Media Theater’s Vocalist Junior Competition, and in March, she had a small singing part in MNHS’s production of Cinderella. As Hope continues to develop her talents through vocal lessons and this summer’s Upper Darby Summer Stage program (online), she expects her future will include the performing arts. Her motto is “Don’t give up. There’s no good reason to!” All your Friends & Neighbors in the Marple Newtown community congratulate you on this award, Hope, and we wish you well in your last year at St. Annie’s and wherever life takes you after that!

Gremlins in Your Electrical System? In your home, are you experiencing blinking or dimming lights? Are circuit breakers tripping? Is something electrical not working the “normal” way or as you should expect it to? When a storm is approaching, the lights in your home may flicker, blink or dim. Many times, the power nearby has gone out and, even if your power stays on, your lights may flicker or dim. There are other causes for why your lights dim or blink, such as surges in your electrical system from appliances and equipment inside your home like refrigerators, sump pumps, hair dryers, washing machines, vacuum cleaners and heating and AC systems. Occasional events are somewhat normal. However, persistent and consistent dimming and blinking can be a signal that trouble might be brewing in your home’s electrical system. As an essential business, Martella Electric is OPEN & AVAILABLE!

Common causes for a circuit breaker to trip or a fuse to blow are hair dryers running when too many lights are on. This frequently happens in older homes, particularly when there’s more than one hair dryer being used. When the outlet for the holiday lights turns off, this can be due to an overload or faulty lights. When using the vacuum and the lights go out, there’s likely to be an overload on the circuit. Power tools used in combination with lights can trigger the same result. When the microwave oven and the coffee pot operate at the same time, the kitchen outlets can all lose power. What was working yesterday may not work today. The electrical system in your home is a spider web maze of wires, boxes, switches, outlets and lights, any of which can fail at any time, and seemingly for no apparent reason. You may have one light in a group that simply doesn’t come on. The dimmer switch for a chandelier doesn’t dim the light anymore. The exterior light on the front door will not turn off. The sump pump trips the breaker or pops a fuse. Sometimes the switch or outlet makes a sizzling sound. Sometimes the plug doesn’t fit tightly into the wall socket. Sometimes it seems like half of the house doesn’t have power. All these situations can be puzzling, frustrating and concerning to homeowners. The electrical systems in our homes are, for the most part, safe and reliable, but they can be quite complicated. When the conditions described above present themselves, calling on a licensed professional electrical contractor to investigate can make a difference in keeping you, your family and your home safe, comfortable and secure. Business Profile
Trustworthy, Patient & Energetic Pet Sitting by Christina Manning Photos courtesy of Wagmore Quality Pet Care
Everyone considers their pet to be a member of the family. You therefore want the best for them. It’s sometimes difficult to care for your pet during the day with busy work schedules and unexpected situations. Wagmore Quality Pet Care is here to help! At Wagmore, you can trust that your pet will be cared for and loved like it was one of their own. Wagmore’s Owner Bob Zwaan grew up in a large family — one of seven — and they always had a dog in the house. “When I was little, I snuck out the front door one day and started walking towards a busy intersection. My dog came running after me and stopped me from walking into the street!” Bob recalled. “Ever since then, I’ve always had a love for dogs.” After high school, Bob joined the Army. During his active service years, he earned his college degree in electrical engineering. When he left the Army, he started working for a

telecommunications company in West Chester. He worked his way up to Project Manager and stayed at that position for 15 years. When his company wanted him to go back to electrical engineering, Bob decided to move on from the corporate world and do something on his own. “Every time I had to travel for work, I had to put my dog in daycare somewhere,” Bob explained, “but my dog would never come home the same.” Bob’s love for his dog Kodiak was the reason he started his business. “I wanted him to be with me during the day.” At first, Bob wanted to be an obedience trainer, but was struggling to get clients. “My family suggested that I walk and train dogs. I love dogs so why not work with them in every aspect?” In 2011, Bob started Wagmore Quality Pet Care. He started growing his business by leaving his business card in veterinarians’ offices and in pet food stores. After two years, his client list had increased to the point that he was able to hire employees. Wagmore Quality Pet Care provides care for all types of pets: dogs, cats, birds, rodents and even reptiles. “My first client had 17 cats, 4 birds, and 2 dogs!” laughed Bob. His website, www.WagmoreQualityPetCare.com, describes the various types of visits you can choose from based on your schedule and what your pet needs during each visit. Clients can choose a quick visit and a Wagmore employee will come to the client’s house, to turn on/off lights or close the windows or shades, making sure your pet is comfortable. Intermediate visits are 30 minutes and include services such as dog-walking, litter box maintenance, feeding, playtime, etc. Extended visits are

60 minutes and include the same services as Intermediate visits plus some additional playtime and grooming. “We cover a 12 -15-mile radius around Newtown Square, with most of our clients in Newtown Square,” said Bob. What sets Wagmore apart? Well, being a marathon runner, Bob can take your dog for a long run for exercise and he also offers obedience training. The only stipulation is that his dog can come too. “It’s great socialization for all of them, and my dog gets to stay with me all day.” You can schedule a service by calling 484 - 459 - 0953 or by email to Bob@WagmoreQualityPetCare.com. During COVID-19, Bob’s business, like many others, took a hard hit. With people losing their jobs and/or working from home, there wasn’t as much of a need for Wagmore’s services. When his business had decreased by 65% in mid-March, Bob decided to use a GoFundMe on Facebook to raise the funds needed to keep his three workers. “I was thinking I could get us covered through April.” The response was much greater than Bob could have predicted! “My clients continued to pay for their services, without actually receiving the service. It was incredible to receive the support from my clients. These animals are the loves of their lives, and I am so grateful they put their trust in me to take care of them every day.” NS

Plumbing Service Precautions During COVID-19
Since the early 20th century, all plumbers have learned early in their career training that “The plumber protects the health of the nation.” That slogan reminds them and the public of the importance of sanitation that the plumbing profession provides. That responsibility becomes even greater during a health crisis like we’re experiencing now. The plumbing business has been considered an essential workforce, so most plumbing businesses have remained open and ready for emergencies. As reopening is being phased in, customers expect a certain amount of safety and trust when they hire a professional to enter their home. This generation is experiencing its first global pandemic, and this generation’s plumbers are learning how to help their industry continue protecting the public’s health.
All plumbing service providers are learning best practices for keeping customers and technicians safe. OSHA has laid out a mandatory COVID-19 training, so customers should always make sure that they hire a contractor who has implemented that training in their company. It is recommended that plumbing contractors wear face coverings, gloves and boot covers when entering someone’s home. As an additional health safety precaution, customers should also wear a face covering when sharing the same space with plumbing contractors or technicians. Another important health safety practice you should expect is being done daily by any service provider — not only plumbing contractors — whom you’re considering letting into your home is monitoring their employees’ health and temperature, and if an employee is not feeling right, advising them to contact the office right away and go home or not come to work that day.

If a plumbing job requires more than one person, the service provider may take an extra precaution and by requiring them to ride in separate vehicles. To help minimize the spread of the virus, social distancing (at least 6 feet between workers) is important, as is wiping down and disinfecting areas in your home that were worked on. All frequently touched tools should also be wiped down and not shared. Each truck should have hand sanitizer, and employees should be frequently washing their hands and sanitizing.
When you initiate a call for service or a new installation, don’t be surprised if you’re asked if anyone at your home has been sick or has had any exposure to the virus. During these challenging times, everyone’s safety depends on thorough and honest two-way communication. To get through this together, contractors and customers must take seriously all health safety requirements and recommendations. This especially holds true for every plumber who hopes to continue to “protect the health of the nation.” NS

Maximizing Your Vehicle’s
Air Conditioning System Summer is a great time to enjoy the outdoors. Having the luxury of air conditioning in the summer heat is priceless. But you know how it is to work in this heat: It’s very easy to work up a sweat, and then you start to slow your pace, and eventually if you don’t get a cold drink, you will stop working. The same is true for your vehicle: Without proper vehicle cooling, air induction and air distribution system integrity, a vehicle’s air conditioning will not work. To stay cool while traveling in your vehicle, keeping its climate control systems in good health is no sweat with just a few simple steps.
Have your fluid levels and conditions checked, especially the coolant. Your vehicle’s A/C system will not work if the coolant system can’t or isn’t doing its part to keep the engine cool! Have your engine and cabin air filters checked and/or replaced. A/C works by blowing air over the cold evaporator core. Dust that has accumulated in those filters will be blown into your vehicle, making for much less enjoyable and perhaps health-threatening travel. Check to ensure that the air is coming out of all vents inside the vehicle: panel vents, defrosters, floor, etc. Any vents that are partially or fully blocked can seriously lower the efficiency of your vehicle’s A/C system.

Check your temperature control. You can expect a 25 – 30 degree cool down from an efficient A/C system. Don’t waste your money having the A/C system repaired or replaced if temperature control is working as expected.

As always, check tire pressures! (This one step can help ensure safe motoring any time of year.) When tire pressures are low, they generate heat, which transfers to the undercarriage and causes your vehicle’s A/C system to have to work harder. You can check some of the above items yourself, but if you’re not comfortable doing so or there are no problems found in any of those items but the vent air is blowing cool or warm instead of cold, contact your automotive professional. Your vehicle may be low in refrigerant and/or air conditioning repair may be needed. Repairs should always be made only by qualified personnel. Publisher’s Note: Edgemont Automotive Owner Lou Matteo and I talked recently about how 2020 has been a tough year thus far. Lou said he feels grateful and lucky that his automotive repairs business, deemed essential, was able to stay open and help our community keep moving during recent events. Lou wanted me to thank everyone for supporting his business and other small businesses throughout our community. His thoughts and prayers go out to all who have been affected by the pandemic, and he shares my hope that during our area’s “green phase,” all small businesses come back strong, especially in the hard-hit personal care and food service industries. Lou wishes all Readers a safe, healthy and happy summer, and positive memories about the second half of 2020. N S

Delaware Valley Septic, Sewer & Storm
COMMON MYTHS
ABOUT YOUR ON-SITE SEPTIC SYSTEM
Many homeowners whose home has an on-site septic system may need a better understanding of their system, for best longterm use and to avoid issues. Might you unknowingly believe any of these four common myths about on-site septic systems?
down into the tank. Whatever the reason, you must call your septic system provider right away so that the problem can be diagnosed and resolved before sewage goes where it shouldn’t.
I don’t need to pump my septic tank if everything is flowing fine.
Most homeowners think that pumping their septic tank gives an overall view on how the system is performing. That is not true. Of the many components that make up a septic system, the most important part is the drain field. When you hire a company to come and pump your septic tank, they are not locating the drain field and checking effluent levels. The only way to check the whole system is to perform an inspection before the pumping. Once the inspection has been performed, the septic company can better assist you in keeping your system running correctly.
How your septic system is flowing today does not guarantee how it will flow tomorrow! A septic tank should be pumped every one to three years, depending on the number of occupants. The more occupants, the shorter the time frame. If you don’t pump your septic tank, then the solids and debris will build up and make their way into the septic system’s drain field. That can cause significant damage. Pumping your septic tank is the best thing you can do to maintain your system and it is much cheaper than a yearly sewer bill.
My alarm is going off, so my tank must be full. If your septic system contains a pump tank, then an alarm in your house will alert you when something is not right. Some homeowners mistakenly think the only time that alarm sounds is when it’s time to have the tank pumped. That’s NOT the only reason; the alarm can indicate many other things. Your pump could have shorted out from a storm; the wiring could have become compromised; or a float could have failed or fallen
Pumping my tank is an overall inspection of the system.
I’ve never had a problem, so my system is fine. Most homeowners don’t find out they have a problem until they put their house on the market and the buyers perform an inspection. Just because you don’t see any issues on the surface doesn’t mean there isn’t one below the surface. The best way to keep up with your septic system is to have it inspected every few years. By avoiding these misconceptions, you can stay prepared and detect issues as they come up. NS

Although the COVID-19 pandemic may have rained on this year’s Marple Newtown Fourth of July Parade, patriotic spirit was still alive and well in our community. Thanks to this year’s parade committee, Newtown Square and Broomall residents were able to Celebrate in Place, showing off their community pride, patriotism and creativity in The Red, White and YOU! Decorating Contest. “In May, the Parade Committee made the tough decision to cancel this year’s parade, to protect the safety of our community,“ said Merrie Staurowsky, Vice-Chair of the Marple Newtown 4th of July Committee. ”But we knew we could find another way to celebrate.” They decided to form a subcommittee made up of residents Merrie and Bill Staurowsky, Annemarie Sudall, Leigh Ann Coary, Mary Jo Hamilton, Jill Dennis and Joe Talento. The subcommittee met via Zoom and also 6-feet apart on back patios, to brainstorm ideas for the community to celebrate — from home. The idea behind The Red, White and YOU! Decorating Contest was that if people could not come to a parade, then a parade would come to them. Jan Ceton, who has been the Parade Committee Chair for 35 years, was impressed with how successful the contest was. “After this year’s parade had to be cancelled, the Committee quickly formed a subcommittee that came up with a great alternative. And they really pulled it off!” There were a total of 59 entries: 38 from Broomall, 21 from Newtown Square and 7 local businesses (from both townships). Judging was done July 1 – 3, and on the 4th of July, winners were greeted by a caravan of judges, complete with Uncle Sam and Lady Liberty and a congratulatory lawn sign. All entries received a participation certificate. Congratulations to all of the Winners! Longtime St. Albans Swim Club member Preston Tyrrell helped St. Albans win Best Group. Like many others, the 4th of July parade has always been a favorite childhood memory
for Preston, and with it cancelled, he wanted to find another way to celebrate. “I saw on Facebook they were still accepting entries for the contest,” he said, “so I called the President of St. Albans and asked if we could enter.” Members of the swim club showed up wearing red, white and blue shirts and USA stickers. They took pictures and submitted them to the contest. “Uncle Sam and Lady Liberty showed up as the judges and it was really exciting for the children. It was nice to be able to still celebrate the 4th of July in a festive way that brought back childhood memories.” Newtown Square resident Beth Scott won the Hometown Hero award for her incredible display of 20 people – Hometown Heroes, Heroes of Color and LGTBQ+ Heroes. “I wanted to show heroes ranging from military soldiers, lawyers, police officers and astronauts, who represented people of all color and backgrounds.” After a month of hard work, Beth was overwhelmed with emotion when she won. She wanted to make a difference with her display, by bringing a justice and equality tone to it. “If just one child saw my display while walking down my street and thought, ‘That Hero can be me someday!’ then it was totally worth it.” Continued on page 24

“What an awesome idea the Red, White & YOU! Decorating Contest was!” said Best Residence winners Connie and Pat Drumm. “This is the type of event that makes living in Marple Newtown such a joy!” Connie and Pat decorated their front yard with American flags, red, white and blue hanging decorations, a Happy Independence Day banner and more! “A special shout-out to the Committee who gave their time during the holiday,” Connie said. “Congratulations to all the winners but, in my book, my neighbors are all winners! Red, White and Blue, we will always be true to you!” Fellow Newtown Square resident, Mary Grambash Miller won Most Creative for the contest. “I feel I am a very creative person anyway and love participating in these types of events,” said Mary. “With everything going on in the world right now, I thought it would be great to include diversity.” She created large signs showing the words “Liberty and Justice for All” surrounded by children of all colors. “The contest was really neat,” Mary said. “I hope they continue to do this every year even if we have the parade.” James Cook and Karen Travis drew a lot of attention with their display that earned them the Most Patriotic award. History Spotlight
Newtown Square Friends Meeting
Quakers and Abolition

by Doug Humes I’ve spent days searching for records of slaves in Newtown and Marple townships, from the first census in 1790 until 1860, the last census before the Civil War. There was one slave reported in the 1790 census for Newtown. By the next census in 1800, there were no slaves in Newtown. That is the only slave that appears in either township for that time period. Why was that? Beginning in the 1680s, Newtown and Marple were settled by Quakers. Their religion, Quakerism, born in the 1650s, was relatively young, and Quaker thinkers were still exploring what it meant to be Quaker. In 1688, six years after Pennsylvania was founded, Quakers in Germantown presented a petition urging their local meeting to support the abolition of slavery. That was the first protest against slavery made by a religious body in the English colonies. Generations of Quakers continued the assault on the “peculiar institution” of slavery. They pressured their members to free their slaves, and also worked to eliminate the importing and sale of slaves.

In 1775, Quakers led the charge in founding the Pennsylvania Abolition Society, the first in the country. The legislature, responding to pressure for change, passed the Gradual Abolition Act in 1780, providing that any child of a slave mother born after that time was free; prohibiting the import of slaves into the state; and placing registration requirements on slave owners. Failure to register resulted in freedom for the slaves. The law was revolutionary: the first time in human history that a democratic government took affirmative steps to abolish slavery, which had existed in the world since the Biblical age

and beyond. That law did not immediately eliminate all slavery in Pennsylvania. In 1840, there were still 64 people held in bondage; a law passed in 1847 finally freed the rest. But the Quakers in Pennsylvania remained active: The Underground Railroad was largely a Quaker initiative in Pennsylvania, and Quakers continued to exert pressure for change on the national level.

Small populations of freed Black slaves lived in Newtown and Marple during those years, most in family units. They were small farmers and laborers, like their Quaker neighbors. In Marple, the Black community formed its own AME church. As a tight-knit agrarian community, people of goodwill in those churches and meeting houses continued to pray for change by day, and at night, they worked together to speed the flow on the Underground Railroad. Today, they rest in their respective cemeteries: Newtown Square Friends, Springfield Friends and the Hayti Cemetery in Marple. Whether you’re planning a few updates or a full renovation, here are some great ideas featuring glass and mirrors that will bring your bathroom to life. One upgrade option that’s timeless and adds an upscale look to any bathroom is a frameless glass shower enclosure. This usually features a large glass door and panel(s) with very little hardware. It’s amazing how this chic design creates the illusion of a more spacious room! Besides looking very sleek, this type of shower enclosure provides many other benefits. Over time, the glass holds up well in function as well as style. Glass shower enclosures have fewer grooves and crevices, thus reducing soap and other buildup and making care and cleaning much easier. Real glass is easy to maintain and will really shine for a very long time. If you’re remodeling or upgrading a smaller bathroom, glass shower enclosures and mirrors can help to make the space seem and feel larger. The transparent glass in the shower allows for the space to extend beyond a typical shower curtain or door. A glass shower enclosure also makes the most of another common shower upgrade: tiling. The countless tile colors, patterns and designs available allow you to get really creative and even create a one-of-a-kind look. With a glass shower enclosure, you get to enjoy seeing the beautiful tiled shower walls. Mirrors also reflect those beautiful tiled walls while also creating an opened-up feeling in any size bathroom. For a modern look, consider installing a mirror with integrated lights. Large mirrors with a backsplash are also stylish and will help expand the feel of a smaller bathroom. Bathrooms can seem boring until you consider the many updates you can do. Remodeling and upgrade projects can be fun if they start with exploring the many design styles that will fit your budget. You and your family will get to enjoy your upgraded bathroom, and if done right, it will increase the market value of your home. A glass and mirrors professional can provide the information, advice and installation services necessary for you to design and create the bathroom you’ll love for a very long time. NS

Newtown Square Fire Police: Helping Ensure a Safe Community by Christina Manning Photos courtesy of Newtown Square Fire Police
Our community is fortunate to have the Newtown Square Fire Company’s Fire Police Unit to ensure the safety of everyone on roadways when an incident occurs. We were able to chat with Fire Chief Doug Everlof and Fire Police Captain Carl Ewing about the everyday duties and responsibilities of the men and women who volunteer in this Unit. Why does Newtown Square Fire Company have a Fire Police Unit? The Fire Police have been an essential part of the Newtown Square Fire Company for more than 50 years. Sworn in by Newtown Township, these unarmed Special Fire Police Officers serve and protect the fire and emergency medical responders as well as community residents at fire and emergency scenes. When the fire company or EMS are called to an incident, the Newtown Square Fire Police Unit truck
Understanding Senior Living Options Can Be Overwhelming and Confusing
Fire Police respond to provide traffic and pedestrian management. Fire Police can, if necessary, shut down or limit travel on roadways, allowing first responders the ability to do their job without worrying about themselves or their vehicles being struck by passing vehicles. The Fire Police also assist local police departments with traffic and pedestrian control on crime scene incidents when requested. Who is in charge of the Fire Police and what are their responsibilities? Newtown Square’s Fire Police Unit is led by Captain Carl Ewing. His responsibilities include training the members, taking charge of the scene of an incident, coordinating efforts with the Fire Company and the Police Department, and critiquing the incident response to improve future responses. He must also submit reports to the Delaware County Fire Police Association and the State.

How do Newtown Square residents come to know the work and service of the Fire Police? Residents will know the work of the uniformed Fire Police when they approach an incident scene. Fire Police Officers direct motorists and residents as to what they must do to not interfere and to safely avoid the scene. For instance, if the incident involves traffic control, the Fire Police will place signs directing traffic around or away from the incident, to protect
P PR RO OV V II D D EE N NC C EE the public and the first responders. Examples of activities include fire calls, highway accidents, floods, downed trees and wires, EMS calls, traffic control at parades, and to assist the Police when required. Fire Police Member Bill Rankin said “We volunteer to serve and protect the community and the firefighters, and to assist the surrounding counties. We ask that the public do their part and follow the directions we give. We are here to help, not ruin their day.” Why do people volunteer to serve in the Fire Police? The volunteers join the Fire Police when they want to give back to the community and help support the Fire Company. Many are former firefighters who have years of experience with all types of incidents. Some are residents of Newtown Township who have talents to contribute, such as Rev. Dr. Roland Buccialia who is the Company Chaplain, and Maureen Madden who contributes her computer skills in addition to scene control. For 30 years, Bill Rankin has run the community outreach program that visits schools to introduce students to the work of Newtown Square Fire Company 41 and the Fire Police.

Garage Floor Coatings A popular new trend is happening now with homeowners: doing decorative coatings and epoxy floor coatings on their garage floors. These coatings add value to your home and allow you to have a clean beautiful surface on your garage floor that is not only decorative but prevents oil spills and provides slip resistance and many other benefits. There are many options out there for epoxy floor coatings, so you must choose wisely! Some coatings are not meant for heavy vehicular traffic. You’ll be disappointed when you put your vehicle on the wrong coating and the weight causes some of the coating to pop off. Because there are SO many different options for epoxy coatings for a garage floor, here are some questions you need to ask prior to putting ANY coating on ANY garage floor: 1. Is there a vapor barrier down? (If not, moisture from under the floor will most likely make your coating fail.) 2. Are there years of oil trapped in the concrete surface? 3. Are there water issues underneath the surface? Most of the above situations can be remedied but they need to be remedied with the right coatings in place. So, when you’re getting estimates for a garage floor coating job, getting answers to those three questions above will be very helpful to ensure success for the life of your garage floor coating.
Here are some other questions you should ask a contractor when considering a project like this: 1. Will a vapor barrier be put down? If not, what primer will be used to hold back any water? (If no vapor barrier will be used, a 100% solids coating should be used or your coating will fail.) 2. Will a 2-part epoxy be used? (2-part epoxies are the best and should be used.) 3. How many coats will be applied? (At least three coats should be used.) Always make sure there is an anti-slip aggregate in the final coat. These floor surfaces can be very slippery when wet, and people could slip and injure themselves. A car can even sometimes slide on these surfaces! What’s known in the industry as “a flake system” is highly recommended because it has proven to be so durable. It’s also now the most popular because it comes in many different colors and options. Doing a little bit of “homework” before you get estimates and proceed with a garage floor coating project will be time well spent if you want results that will be attractive, safe and durable for many years to come. Newtown Square Homeowner’s Solution For Sewer Tie-In Savings There are TWO OPTIONS for Sewer Tie-Ins with Township Approval 1. Traditional 4" Gravity System
2. Directional Drilling System
Digging Down to The Sewer Main
Underground Horizontal Drilling
Pros • A Gravity System with a clean out, relies on gradually sloping pipelines for downhill sewage flow. • The sewage flows away from the property and into a sewer main, offering peace of mind for many years. Con • Installing a Gravity System will significantly disturb the homeowner’s landscaping.
Pros • A Directional Drilling System is installed by tunneling underground horizontally, under gardens, driveways and other man-made obstacles. • Installation requires far less disturbance of landscaping. Cons • A Directional Drilling System requires a duplex grinder pump with battery backup (in the event of power loss). • Directional Drilling Systems require bi-annual servicing and owner monitoring.
