What to Expect from a Top-Notch Roofing Contractor
by Expert Contributor Kevin O'Donnell, Owner of O'Donnell Roofing
Need a new roof to fix one or more leaks? Has your existing roof outlived its typical lifespan? Would a new roof significantly improve your home’s curb appeal? Regardless of WHY you may soon select a roofing contractor, WHO you select can dramatically affect how satisfied you are during and after your roofing project.
Satisfaction is an opinion or feeling of having all your expectations fully met. As a roofing customer, your expectations will be met — or perhaps not met — by the behaviors and conversations of roofing contractors who provide estimates and by the contractor whom you select for the project. From start to finish, your level of satisfaction will be based on how well or poorly a roofing contractor (or any business) demonstrates these Five Customer Expectations.
1. Be Responsive, On Time, Honest and Transparent
No response when you request an estimate and a contractor showing up late or not at all with no valid explanation are serious causes for concern. Everyone’s time is valuable, and businesses that don’t recognize that or who don’t seem fully honest may not deserve to get your business.
2. Listen and Empathize with Your Concerns
Notice whether you’re given time to fully explain your concerns and goals for the roofing project. Are you allowed to ask all your questions, and are you satisfied with the answers? Is the conversation a two-way street or does it seem you’re being treated simply as another possible sale?
3. Identify and Justify All Recommended Solutions
To make a wise decision about which roofing contractor or roofing solution to select, you need to be informed. You need details about the proposed products and clear justifications about their efficiency and cost. If several price options are offered, the PROs and CONs of each option should be clearly defined. And the contractor should be completely comfortable with you asking questions until you feel fully satisfied.
4. Under-Promise and Over-Deliver
When selecting a roofing contractor, you should receive in writing a detailed description that includes how they will manage the project and what its timeline will be. Such detail sets your expectations that can be met or even exceeded if all factors involved (weather, product availability, staffing) perfectly align. If you receive no detailed project description, there’s no promise made and no possibility they’ll over-deliver.
5. Make the Project as Painless as Possible
Roofing projects are usually messy, noisy, and sometimes inconvenient. But all that plus the expense are justified because your roof is arguably the most important part of your home. A topnotch roofing contractor does and says everything required to be easy to work with and gives you great reasons during and after the project to be proud and glad you selected them. NS
