We know we are doing something good. One reader called to simply say how proud she is to live in Newtown Square when she considers how much she loves to see our “classy” magazine come in her mail each month. Of course, I did not fail to give the credit to all our classy Sponsors who make our hometown magazine possible. Speaking of classy, I am very happy to welcome a new, super-classy Sponsor who is himself an American Classic - Gene Krueger, the nationally known American Furniture Craftsman. Gene Krueger Fine Furniture has joined its support of Newtown Square residents as a Sponsor of our community. Let’s thank Gene by visiting his studio in Broomall and his online Gallery at www.GeneKruegerFineFurniture.com. This month we say goodbye and thank you to our friends Craig & Olivia Whitney, the young husband and wife team who have served as our magazine’s Content Coordinators since Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors was launched in print and online at www.NewtownSquareMag.com. Craig & Olivia will soon become parents. Their efforts to help birth our hometown magazine will not be forgotten. Craig, Olivia, thank you for your great service, which has been a blessing to our community, and best wishes as you move on to start your family together. Taking over the role of Content Coordinator for our magazine is Liz Burnett, who has served as my Executive Assistant since January. Liz now looks forward to interacting more with our Readers, to develop local feature stories, and with our impressive team of local Expert Contributors whose features we all look forward to reading each month. As Liz is new in the Content Coordinator role, I’m sure she would love to receive some emails from Readers about any fresh ideas for new feature stories about residents of our community, and particularly any nominations for a Resident Feature cover story. If you have ideas, or if you are a bit of a writer yourself and would be interested in submitting a short feature for publication in our magazine, contact Liz Burnett at LBurnett@BestVersionMedia.com.

Dear Residents, Autumn is always bittersweet for me: As cooler temps bring welcome relief from uncomfortable summer days, the brilliant falling leaves remind me that shorter days and winter chills are on the horizon. This autumn is extra-bittersweet for me, as we say thank you and goodbye to our devoted Content Coordinators Craig & Olivia Whitney. They leave two talented pairs of shoes for me to fill, but solid tracks to follow, and for that, I’m very grateful. I now have the pleasure of Bringing People Together through stories about wonderful families like The Flynns, all leaders in service to our country, businesses and fine arts. This month’s Business Profile, about Sproul Lanes and their recent extensive renovations and new Escape Rooms, shows how another Marple-area family has renewed their 58-year commitment to provide entertainment for all ages.

What Kind of Air Purifier

Is Right for You?

If you’ve spent the summer sneezing and wheezing inside your home, it may be time to invest in an air purifier. These devices reduce dust, pollen and other allergens inside the home, and some also help eliminate odors. Air purifiers come in many different sizes and forms using different technologies. You can spend a few dollars to several hundred dollars for devices that may or may not solve your problem. If your home has a furnace, you may already have an indoor air cleaner in place: the furnace filter. Some just help to keep the furnace clean and operating properly. Other higher quality filters are designed to filter out dust, mold, allergens, pet dander and other pollutants that circulate around your home.

HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING

Furnace filters should be changed at least quarterly and more frequently if someone in your household suffers from allergies or a respiratory ailment. Most furnace filters have a MERV rating (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value): The higher the rating, the more contaminants can be filtered out. The American Lung Association recommends using furnace filters with a MERV rating of at least 10. If changing your filter as recommended doesn’t help alleviate symptoms of allergies or asthma, then it’s time to consider additional air purification devices. There are three basic kinds to choose from: 1. Mechanical filters remove particles from the air just like a furnace filter, but some may be more effective. At the high end, HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filters have MERV ratings up to 20. They are not reusable.

2. Electronic air cleaners use an electrical field to trap particles. They are typically made of woven polyurethane and polypro pylene fibers with aluminum grates for rigidity, and fit over HVAC system vents and returns. When air passes through the fibers, it generates electrostatic charges that act like a magnet in attracting airborne particles. Electrostatic filters can be cleaned and reused. 3. Ionic air cleaners operate by releasing negatively charged ions into the air, which stick to positive charges inherent in pollutant particles. This causes the particles to stick to each other and settle out of the air onto objects in the room. Another big consideration is whether you want a whole-house air purifier or one or more portable units. Whole-house units can be installed directly into your existing HVAC system whereas portable units can be set up wherever you wish. Portable units are noisier and less thorough in purifying the air throughout the home but they are cheaper and more convenient. Wholehouse cleaners require professional installation but they are more effective in decontaminating the entire home. Contact an indoor air quality specialist who can discuss these options and help you decide what would best suit your needs and your budget. NS

The Flynns: Leadership, Patriotism and Creativity Robin and Jim Flynn Photo courtesy of Shannon Lynn Photography www.ShannonLynnPhotography.com

Jim and Robin Flynn both grew up in Camp Springs, MD. He attended Bishop McNamara High School; she attended nearby LaReine High School. They met through ECHO (Encountering Christ in Others), a Christian weekend retreat program for high school students that’s similar to Kairos in the Philly area. Robin and Jim dated during college semester breaks while he attended West Point and she attended Drexel University. When Jim graduated with a degree in Engineering in 1982, he was commissioned as an Infantry Officer. After Ranger School, he was stationed in Alaska. Robin graduated from Drexel one year later, with a degree in Interior Design.

In September 1983, Jim called to reconnect with Robin. They started writing letters, and when Jim came home to Maryland for the Christmas holidays, they grew closer. In May, 1984, he invited her to Alaska. He had an engagement ring ready. Jim proposed, and Robin said “Yes!” Their military wedding in October 1984 was at St. Philip’s Catholic Church in Camp Springs. They honeymooned in Maui, then returned to Fort Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska. Over the next 18 months, Robin experienced what Jim had already grown accustomed to: Alaskan winters when days are dark until 11:30am, and summer sunsets that last for hours. During Jim’s five years of active duty, he moved nine times. Robin worked as a residential Interior Designer. In December 1987, Capt. Jim Flynn left the Army, to work for GE Aerospace in Virginia. He also started his five-year commitment to serve in the Army Reserves. “I enjoyed my time and training at West Point,” Jim said, “and I’m grateful for my Army career; the terrific experience it gave me, and my West Point classmates, some of whom I’m still good friends with.” After GE Aerospace, Jim worked for and ran several businesses. He and Robin also started their family during those years. In 1996, Jim’s job transferred him to the Philly area. He and Robin chose Newtown Square and bought their home in Echo Valley, where they’ve lived happily ever since. When they moved to Newtown Square, their three sons, Jay, Alex and Matthew, were ages 7, 4 and 1.5. Robin became a full-time mom and put her professional life on a back-burner. Little did she know that her future included being a master Glass Artist!

While all three boys attended St. Anastasia School, Robin volunteered many hours, helping mostly in the library. Jim volunteered his photography skills by taking photos at school sports events, the school play, and the 8th grade dance. In high school, all three boys played soccer. Two attended Cardinal O’Hara HS; one went to Archbishop Carroll HS. All three enrolled in their college ROTC program. “None of them were born yet when I ended my Army career in 1987,” observed Jim, “yet all three chose to serve their country in the Army. Robin and I are very proud of Jay, Alex, and Matthew. They’re all patriots.” Their oldest son Jay, 30, graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology with a degree in Civil Engineering. He’s an Army Captain who lives in Florida and enjoys skydiving, scuba diving, and all high-risk sports.

Alex, 27, graduated from the University of Scranton with a degree in International Relations and Arabic. Also an Army Captain, Alex lives in Washington state and enjoys snowboarding, hiking, and being outdoors. Matthew, 24, graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He’s a 1st Lieutenant stationed in Kansas. He remains an ardent Eagles fan and enjoys golf and being outdoors as well. “The boys are busy, so Jim and I tend to go visit them. So far, everyone’s made it home every Christmas,” Robin said. When Jay, Alex and Matthew arrive home, the family’s eight-year-old Long Coat German Shepherd Macallan (“Mac”) goes CRAZY welcoming them.

The Flynns have enjoyed their 23 years in Echo Valley. “The neighbors are VERY friendly,” said Robin, “The day we moved in, several came to introduce themselves! This is a great place to raise a family, with lots of creeks to fish and play in.” “Echo Valley is a socially active community,” Jim added. “Several years, we hosted the Steak-Out, a big barbecue in June, one of the seasonal events hosted annually by the homeowners’ association.” When Matthew was in high school, Robin started a bathroom remodel project. She found a tile she liked but it was too expensive. She then heard about a class to learn how to make glass Continued on page 10

Over the past 20 years, Jim has used the leadership skills he developed in the Army to serve as CEO for four different companies. He’s also quite creative: He plays guitar in St. Anastasia’s Folk Group, and is a skilled woodworker. Jim built Robin a beautiful art studio in their home. He makes furniture and turns platters and bowls into which Robin insets glass. They enjoy collaborating on designing and creating new pieces. Jim works with wood to relax; Robin works with glass because she’s passionate about creating beautiful artwork that’s both functional and decorative. Together, they create a lot of beauty and fun. Three pieces of Robin Flynn’s beautiful glass art alongside Jim Flynn’s English walnut lidded vessel

coasters. She signed up, intending to also learn how to make her desired bathroom tiles for less. She found glass art so fascinating that she kept learning, and now uses various tools and techniques to create stunning results. Robin has achieved Master Artisan status in PA. Her artwork is in galleries in several states. For three years, she served as President of the Haverford Guild of Craftsmen. Robin’s other passion is gardening, born of her need to be outdoors while the boys played in their back yard or swam in their pool. She’s a very active volunteer for Newtown Square in Bloom (NSiB).

Robin and Jim have been married for 35 years, an achievement that makes them confidently volunteer as mentors for “Living in Love,” a seven-week program for engaged couples planning to marry in the Catholic church (or already-married Catholic couples). Everyone in the Flynn Family is grateful for the many opportunities the Army provided Jim, and now provides Jay, Alex and Matthew, to witness and learn leadership skills. A leader’s responsibilities often require creativity when developing solutions. Jim and Robin and their three sons are all blessed with the interest, skills, and commitment to passionately serve their communities and their country. NS

History Spotlight

Happy 50th Birthday to Marple Newtown’s Bandarama! by Doug Humes Photos courtesy of Marple Historical Society Larry McGriff and his megaphone

1970 MNHS Band performs at Eagles game at Franklin Field

Cover of 1970 Bandarama program Announcement of 1970 event

Marple Newtown’s marching band made its first appearance in 1942. In the 1960’s, the band performed in competitions. By 1969, under energetic young band director Larry McGriff, they had won the last two competitions at the Virginia Beach band festival. McGriff inherited a good band program and led it to the next level. But at that next level, there were more expenses. More success meant more participants, instruments, uniforms, and travel expenses. In 1970, the brain trust of the band – McGriff, treasurer John R. Longacre, band parent chairmen Robert Rust and Warren Given, and a host of other parents – had a brainstorming session. The idea that they came up with was to host an annual band competition on their home field. Invite the best area high school bands to compete. Sell tickets and hot dogs and drinks, and seek sponsors. Save money on travel by hosting a “home game,” and raise money for the band in the process. The room filled with enthusiasm for the project. “What should we call it?” “Bandarama!” Longacre suggested. At the first Bandarama on October 3, 1970, the home band walked in to a drum cadence set by Senior drummer Dave Kovnat: the popular drum solo from the rock song “In a Gadda

da Vida.” Larry McGriff was not afraid to listen to his students and incorporate their ideas, as long as they committed to executing his musical and marching ideas to perfection. And with megaphone in hand, he would drill them to perfection. The first Bandarama was a success. The first band to appear was from Nether Providence High School, followed by Coatesville, Salisbury, Plymouth Whitemarsh, Garnet Valley, Wissahickon, Shikillamy, Sun Valley, Archbishop Wood and Marple Newtown. Eleven judges evaluated each performance and awarded Archbishop Wood the First Place trophy. McGriff ’s vision has been repeated each year since then, under his direction and then his successors, Bearj Jehanian and Mike Massimo. Thousands of student musicians have enjoyed the experience, and have been fully supported by thousands of school officials, parents, patrons, and music fans. On Saturday, October 12, from 6-9:30 pm, the 50th Bandarama will play out at the MNHS field. Twelve regional high school bands will perform their field show. Come out and support our band, and enjoy the other incredible young musicians who will perform that night. It will be a night for the history books, so bring your children and grandchildren, to show them what’s possible with a musical instrument in their hands. What to Look for in a

Fitness Coach

Everyone can afford a personal trainer nowadays. It’s not just for the exclusive client. The question now is: How do you know if they’re any good? Even a Personal Trainer or Fitness Coach who’s recommended by a fit and healthy friend may not be right for YOU. There’s several important factors to consider. A good Coach should be able to help you with nutrition, your goals, and set you on a path to see the results you’re paying for. Good Coaches put together programs that help each member progress through a training cycle lasting weeks or months, in order to achieve maximum results.

NOW OPEN!

ONE STRONG TEAM 4847 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square In the Marville Shopping Center at Edgmont Square

484-420-4935 www.RetroFitness.com/EdgmontSquarePA Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors

A simple exercise, when done properly, is a great start. Form, mechanics, muscle engagement, and weight distribution are just some of the basic elements a good Coach understands and can explain so you can perform the exercise correctly. Therein lies the problem: Performing the exercise correctly. Coaches need to know how to perform each exercise correctly, themselves, before trying to teach an exercise to anyone else. You have a right to expect that Coaches know what they’re doing. That’s more likely if a Coach has a nationally recognized certification and/or a college degree in Exercise Science or Kinesiology. Such education, combined with a year or two of experience and professional on-site training, further increase the likelihood the Coach can confidently demonstrate and clearly explain useful exercises and how they will help you reach your goals.

Small group, large group, and one-on-one training memberships available.

12

Some Coaches today recommend doing over-complicated, unnecessary exercises that amount to nothing except getting prepared for an injury. It’s always better to first learn and perfect basic exercises like squats and pushups than being forced to stand on one leg with a 25-lb dumbbell in one hand over your head on top of a bosu ball, eyes closed, snapping your fingers and talking about feeling the burn. Complicated isn’t necessarily better or even effective.

October 2019

Depending on your fitness level and skill, it might take a while to perfect a movement such as a compound exercise. This is where knowledge and patience come in. Coaches shouldn’t give up on you because they are frustrated or don’t know how to correct the problem. They certainly shouldn’t make the exercise more intense until your form is correct. Coaches should research, ask questions, and figure out how to fix your issue. When a Coach can do that, you’ll get much more out of each session, and your results will speak for themselves. Ed Winfield is the Program and Fitness Director of Retro Fitness Newtown Square. Expert Contributor by Jim Casar Carpet Warehouse

What to Consider BEFORE Purchasing New Carpet There’s a LOT to think about when purchasing carpet. The material the carpet is made of can vary widely these days: You can choose from carpet made of nylon, polyester, triexta or wool. All higher-end carpets will wear well. Keep in mind that the more you vacuum any carpet, the better it will wear. All carpets have some type of stain resistance, but the recommended level of stain resistance is based on where in your home or office the carpet will be installed. For bedroom carpet, for example, where you don’t usually eat food or drink beverages, minimum stain resistance would be fine. And in bedrooms, you don’t need to install top-of-the-line carpet or an upgraded pad. You can use almost any type of carpet with a regular pad. So, for a bedroom, your selection can be based on your personal preference, desired comfort, and budget. For stairs, living room, dining room and other high-traffic and/ or food-consumption areas, you should consider a higher-quality carpet so it will wear and clean better. For a basement, where you may occasionally get a little water or moisture, you should consider purchasing an indoor/outdoor carpet.

And what type of carpet pad is best, standard or moisture barrier? If you’ve ever cleaned your carpet and it looks great, and then, after a few days, the stain comes back, that’s due to the stain getting into the pad. Moisture barrier pads help keep the liquid stains out of the pad. Again, the function that the room or area serves in your lifestyle can help you determine what type of carpet pad is best. As far as cleaning goes, all carpets need to be cleaned by a certified carpet cleaner every 12 to 18 months, to keep the carpet warranties in effect. If you need to file a claim, the mill will require proof (such as a receipt) of each time the carpet was cleaned. Talk with your carpet professional, to understand all the different carpet styles and grades, to be sure you purchase what best suits your particular needs. NS

Bringing People Together

Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors

Bringing People Together Gets People Talking…And Asking Questions Too! People who know me in the community often greet me with kind words about Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine, and thanks for mailing them our monthly hometown magazine, which is also available to read and download online at www.NewtownSquareMag.com. Of course, you know I never take the thanks. I tell everyone that Bringing People Together through the magazine is made possible only by the leadership of the businesses who are the advertising Sponsors of our magazine. It’s that simple. The readers I meet often ask similar questions about the magazine, questions that have simple answers. But there’s also one harder-toanswer question I’m asked. I’ll share the Top 3 easy-to-answer questions, and end with that more difficult question, the one I’m asking you readers to help me develop some greater success in answering by way of your interest in also Bringing People Together. Q1: How does the magazine select its monthly Resident Feature, the family for the cover? The residents of our cover feature are nominated by readers. They can be a family, couple or individual. We look for residents with ties to the community through volunteer service, long-time residency or their children’s activities. Everybody has a story, and we love sharing it with the community. To nominate any Newtown Square resident as the subject of your hometown magazine, contact our Content Coordinator Liz Burnett at LBurnett@BestVersionMedia.com. Q2: How are “Experts” selected to serve the magazine as Expert Contributors of feature articles? Business segment “Experts” are Sponsors of our community through our magazine. Without them, we would have no magazine. We owe them our gratitude for selecting Newtown Square as a community they support through their marketing budgets as advertising Sponsors. And we should reward their sponsorship of our community by choosing to do business

with them first, whenever possible. Each business “Expert” is exclusive to their market segment, so the magazine is careful to only engage respected businesses with trusted service in our community to serve as Expert Contributors of feature articles for our magazine. Q3: How can I help grow the magazine so more local features can be included each month? I call these readers who ask me this type of question Reader Leaders. My answer to them falls into three categories: (1) Nominate Newtown Square residents for feature stories; (2) If you like to write, contact me so we can consider your submitting a feature article for publication; and (3) Consider asking a local business to become a new advertising Sponsor who will help grow the page count of our magazine so we can publish more monthly features about local residents, youth, seniors and organizations in Newtown Square. Sometimes I do answer this question specifically, by saying “Find us a trusted Attorney or Dentist who will serve our community as our Expert Contributor.” Q4. Why don’t I see a particular business being a Sponsor of our hometown magazine? This harder-to-answer question is often asked by readers who love our magazine and also patronize local Newtown Square businesses that are not being seen as a Sponsor in our community magazine. Sometimes, those readers even name a specific local Jeweler, Lawyer, Deli, Doctor, Dentist, Barber, Auto Body Shop, Plastic Surgeon, Physical Therapist, Tailor, Car Dealership, Seafood Store, Frame Shop or Restaurant. I’m always careful to answer this question by saying that regardless, we should always shop local whenever possible. Some readers press and ask if we’ve invited a specific business to be a Sponsor or Expert Contributor. If we have not, it’s likely due to that business being outside our social-mediain-print network and I haven’t yet scheduled a meeting with the owner, in which case I may ask that reader to introduce me to that business owner and perhaps help me schedule that meeting. But when a reader asks me about a specific business whose owner I’ve been trying to invite or whom I’ve met with and was told they have no interest, I’ll say so, with disappointment and not really knowing why. Too often a business will think I am reaching out to sell advertising in a magazine. Well yes, but you readers know it’s much more: It’s community sponsorship of Newtown Square homeowners, available to businesses that know Newtown Township homeowners are very important to the success of their business.

If you’re a local business owner interested in becoming more known in Newtown Square, or you’re a Newtown Square resident interested in supporting our mission of Bringing People Together in some way through your writing or by networking on social media or in our community, please contact me at 610-553-5536 or BBlaisse@BestVersionMedia.com. Business Profile

Reinvents Itself…Again! Written by Liz Burnett Photos courtesy of Shannon Lynn Photography www.ShannonLynnPhotography.com

If you haven’t been to Sproul Lanes in awhile, head on over for a very pleasant surprise: Delaware County’s largest bowling center has had renovations inside and out. This local favorite entertainment destination is now more entertaining than ever. The three Marple-area brothers who founded Sproul Lanes in 1961 would also be surprised, delighted and very proud of how their vision has made so much fun possible for so many. During the 1950s, Tom, Woody, and Dan Abbonizio had seen bowling become a very popular team sport and pastime in the US, especially in Pennsylvania. They owned multiple properties and multiple businesses, including a construction company, and were always looking to expand. So they combined their building knowhow and business expertise with some land they owned, and built Sproul Lanes and its connected Grand Plaza Shopping Center on S. Sproul Road in Springfield. Sproul Lanes, still owned and now managed by the second-generation Abbonizio family, has outlasted other Marple Newtown area bowling centers because its owners have continuously reinvested in the business. “We’ve hired the right people, using a total team approach,” Steve Abbonizio said proudly. “As a part Owner and the Managing Director here, I represent the family’s interests and intentions for our center’s future. We make sure we put people in the right positions to run this business so our customers

are satisfied. Our 58-year history has been possible because we’ve always done our best to change and modernize with the market, and accommodate our customers with what they want today.” What their customers have always wanted — and so Sproul Lanes makes it a top priority — is a clean, well-run full-service bowling center. League bowlers account for 60% of the center’s customers, so Sproul Lanes has a pro shop staffed by people who actually know what they’re doing. Sproul Lanes provides hundreds of local folks an affordable way to experience competitive camaraderie and build friendships every week by joining one of their many leagues for men, women, men and women (mixed), and youth. Bowlers of all ages and all skill levels are sure to find an evening or daytime league they’ll enjoy. The makeover includes new synthetic lanes as well as upgraded ball returns and machinery behind the pins. Everything in this 36-lanes center has been modSproul Lanes new ernized; bathrooms are updated; Escape Rooms entry and major cosmetic improvements have been made throughout. The iconic bowling pin outside, a local landmark, has been totally renovated, and retrofitted so that it now lights up. Look for it on the building, between the two Ls in SPROUL LANES. Murals of Philadelphia span the lanes down by the pins, reminding bowlers of the many great things about the center’s extended community. It’s a perfect place for birthday parties, private parties, fundraisers, corporate events and any gathering you’re hosting when you want your guests to have an enjoyable and memorable time.

Sproul Lanes Snack Bar is now a full-service Eat ’n Grille that offers a variety of foods and seating. They’re BYOB-approved for beer and wine, and plan to have a liquor license in the near future. Sproul Lanes offers the best of both worlds: It’s a business that can proudly look back at its history and decades of contributions to the Marple Newtown community. It’s also a forward-looking business managed by a family committed to maintaining the legacy that the three Abbonizio brothers created in 1961. A fun community doesn’t happen unless people do what it takes to make it happen. Sproul Lanes is about as happenin’ a place as you’ll find for a frequent fresh dose of fun!

You’ll understand just how serious Sproul Lanes is about modernizing and planning for its future when you experience their new Escape Rooms! Over the past six months, they converted their game rooms into two Escape Rooms, each with a different theme: Choose the Book of Secrets or Prison Break, and your group gets an hour to solve the puzzles and riddles in the room so you can find the final clue that will let you out of the room. A national Escape Rooms Designer was engaged to help make it the only bowling center in Delaware County that offers this exciting and challenging interactive entertainment. Experience this for yourself and you’ll understand how this family owned and operated business continues to serve and adapt to the dynamic needs of their marketplace. Sproul Lanes history proves they’re a long-term entertainment destination; their new Escape Rooms prove they intend to maintain that reputation. Another sign of long-term commitment is Sproul Lanes General Manager, Fred Conaway. Since 1998, Fred has ensured that the center’s equipment and environment are maintained and ready for customers to experience the fun they expect. In his 21 years there, Fred has faithfully demonstrated his excellent ability to manage a very complex operation. The center’s Assistant Manager and Marketing Manager, Sheila Biddle, is another loyal Sproul Lanes staff member. She takes care of setting up leagues, and markets and coordinates reservations for parties, the Escape Rooms and the new meeting room (formerly a nursery). Sheila’s 13 years there make her the perfect person for connecting with businesses and other groups who want to hold meetings there, optionally combined with bowling and/or using the Escape Rooms for a team-building/ bonding experience.

Our Community by Chief Doug Everlof Newtown Square Fire Company

Architect’s rendering of the new Newtown Square Fire Station coming in 2020

Coming in 2020! A NEW Newtown Square Fire Station In early 2019, the Newtown Square Fire Company broke ground on the construction of its $5.5M fire station located in the Ellis Preserve. To better meet the needs of an expanding community from a logistical and operational perspective, it was necessary for the fire company to relocate. With input from fire company members, the new fire station was engineered and designed by Linn Architects of Media, and constructed by Pancoast & Clifford Builders of West Chester. This new station will be 21,600 sq. ft. and contain six vehicle bays on a 1.12-acre parcel. By contrast, the 1962 vintage station was 12,600 sq. ft., had four vehicle bays on only .25 acre. We were landlocked on a high traffic density intersection.

Why the need for a new station? For starters, modern fire apparatus is larger, more complex, and multifunctional. Over the years, our service level has expanded to include a Traffic and Utility vehicle, plus Fire Prevention and Auxiliary trailers. In addition, fire companies are mandated to comply with various National Fire Protection Standards; specifically important is NFPA 1500 Occupations Safety, Health and Wellness. Space was created for the addition of a firefighter gear storage room, to isolate this gear from hazards such as vehicle exhaust and UV rays. A Decontamination Room was added, to allow firefighters to immediately shower and clean gear after a fire, medical or hazmat incident. Many byproducts from exposure to smoke are known carcinogens and have been linked to firefighter deaths from cancer.

A gym has also been added for two reasons: Maintaining health and wellness is crucial in the reduction of heart attacks, musculoskeletal and other injuries related to firefighting. An additional benefit of having a gym is when volunteer members work out in the station, it makes them more readily available to rapidly respond to 911 calls. Our new station will be equipped with four live-in quarters, and two bunkroom facilities. These live-in accommodations will provide bunking facilities to volunteers in exchange for 40-hours of duty coverage during the nighttime and weekend. The other two bunkrooms will facilitate sleeping arrangements for members on an infrequent basis such as during storm coverage. A hightech training room will accommodate up to 50 personnel and will allow the fire company to host state and nationally certified firefighter and fire police training, and also offer to the outside community training classes, such as CPR and First Aid. By adding a 3,000 sq. ft. basement, this station will optimize use of space. Beyond housing the building’s mechanicals (utilities, sprinkler and main electrical components), there is sufficient additional space for storing spare fire gear and selfcontained breathing apparatus equipment, and to conduct training year-round.

Our new station is designed to serve our community’s emergency service needs for the next century. We are excited to see its completion, and invite residents to stop in for a visit when the new station is operational next year. For updates on the new building, visit www.NSFC.org.

Publisher’s Note: The Executive Board of the Newtown Square Fire Company has remarkably managed its finances, hoping to one day build a new home for Fire Station 41. That day is near, thanks to capital reserve funds and low-interest loans. But our new hometown firehouse would not be possible without a Capital Campaign to raise $3 Million by 2024, to pay off construction loans; restore capital reserves; and to purchase apparatus and equipment. If 100% of Newtown Township homeowners respond to this Capital Campaign, our hometown fire company will have no debt and our financial gift will demonstrate our indebtedness to our hometown volunteer firefighting heroes. Let’s do it! NS

Expert Contributor by Sheila Turner From the Top Studio of Dance

From Athletes to Artists –

Let’s Share the Stage! There’s a funny little saying that, “If dance were any easier, it would be called football.” There’s another saying that goes, “Real men marry dance teachers.” But that’s a topic for another day. So…is dance a sport or an art? It’s an age-old debate with solid points on both sides. All humor aside, anyone who’s never stepped on a 50-yard line can’t know if football is easier than dance.

subsequent apology ignited a much-needed discussion on freedom of choice and what it takes both physically and mentally to be a dancer.

This issue was recently in the spotlight when TV talk show host Lara Spencer rocked the dance world by mocking young Prince George’s love of ballet. Let’s be honest: If he were playing tennis, there’d be no story. It’s no secret that for many years, the dance community has fought an uphill battle to gain the respect it deserves. Spencer’s recent comment and

For legendary dancer and choreographer Gene Kelly, it was, in his words, a personal “crusade” to show that dancers are athletes. As he said, “What could be more graceful than a football player throwing a pass? What is more excitingly beautiful than the swift movement of a double play? Every motion a good athlete makes is as beautiful as any a dancer makes.”

So, aside from the physical training of a dancer and an athlete, what are some similarities? You’re on a Team: Although many view dance as an individual practice, it’s more of a team sport. Your classmates are your dance family. They depend on you to be there. You all learn together, and grow individually and as a team as you support each other. Each member has individual strengths, but together, they create the perfect dynamic. Just as a coach designs plays based on player ability, dance teachers choreograph pieces that complement their students. Equipment Matters: You wouldn’t send your football player on the field in a sweatshirt, sweatpants and running sneakers, right? Sports athletes needs the right gear, and so do dancers. Dance is a study of how the body moves to create art. Formfitting attire and proper shoes enable dance teachers to see each student’s lines, posture and alignment.

Dance often helps children and adults be better athletes on the field. Dance also offers healthy consistency as sports seasons come and go. Committed dance students quickly learn that regardless of how practices and performances result in what feels like a winning or losing season, they can always rely on the support of their dance family. Now, if only “game day” for dancers had timeouts and replays… just saying! NS

Scouting for Success

Gary & Cheryl Sebra with sons Cole (left) and Ty (right)

by Liz Burnett Photos courtesy of Gary Sebra

The Pinewood Derby is legendary: A Cub Scout is given a block of wood, four molded plastic wheels, and four small nails for axles. The goal is for the Cub Scout and a parent to work together, to transform that block of wood into a kid-sized custom race car that goes fast, looks cool, and is driven only by gravity from a downhill slope. Working to create a winner develops a Cub Scout’s craftsmanship skills and magical memories for that Cub Scout’s parents. Gary and Cheryl Sebra are Scout parents. Gary, once a Boy Scout himself, is a lifelong resident of Newtown Square and Sergeant with the Newtown Township Police Department. Cheryl is a Registered Dental Hygienist. Their two sons, Ty and Cole, have enjoyed participating in youth baseball, football, swimming, karate and Cub Scouts. When their oldest son Ty went to 1st grade in 2014, Gary and Cheryl enrolled him in Cub Pack 315 because they wanted Ty to benefit from that sense of belonging and self-esteem that comes from Scouting. They also wanted Ty to experience working with other boys toward shared goals within activities that were not only through sports, and to build other skills while also having fun and making new friendships. One Scouting activity, the Pinewood Derby craft project, ignited in Ty a desire to succeed and win races. The Sebra family spent hours together in their garage, making Ty’s first race car. Minutes before the race, Ty’s car got knocked off a table. It fell to the floor and its wheels broke off. With time running out, competitors offered spare wheels, and with only minutes before the race was to start, Ty and Gary got the car back together with new wheels, some super glue and some car body weight carved out, to meet weight requirements.

Gary and Cole cutting and shaping the car body

Pinewood Derby wood block, 4 plastic wheels and 4 nails for axles

Those repairs surely affected the car’s look but not Ty’s hopes of winning. During the multiple heats of the race, excitement built as Ty unexpectedly won race after race. It came down to three cars in a final raceoff. Ty finished in First Place! The Sebra family was stunned and now forever hooked on Pinewood Derby racing. During Ty’s five years in Cub Pack 315, he finished in First Place four times, and in Second Place once. And for the past three years, he’s been invited to Regional District Races and finished in First Place each year, making him eligible each year for the Pinewood Derby World Championships in New York City. In 2017, Ty finished 35th overall and 8th for his Bear rank class of racers. In 2018, Ty improved: He finished 17th overall and 6th for his higher Webelo rank class. NO appointment necessary! Even before Ty’s younger brother, Cole, joined Cub Scouts, he wanted in on the Sebra Family racing tradition. In the Pinewood Derby race for race for siblings, Cole won First Place, and he was hooked! This past year, Ty and Cole worked with their parents in their garage, designing and sanding their cars, and working on the wheels and axles. Ty shared with Cole his secrets for winning so that they could both be invited to the Pinewood Derby World Championships Races by winning First and Second Place. And that’s exactly what they did! At the 2019 Pinewood Derby World Championship Races, hundreds of cars were entered with qualifying times separated by mere hundredths of a second. Ty Sebra finished 9th overall and 5th for his Webelo II rank class. With one more race left for Cole, and with big brother Ty standing by his side cheering him on, seven-year-old Cole Sebra finished 21st overall and took First Place for his Tiger rank class, to become the fastest Tiger Cub Scout Pinewood Derby racer in the United States.

magic is repeated annually by millions of Cub Scouts worldwide. As for the Sebra Family, those magical memories developed together in their garage will last a lifetime. When Ty Sebra finished 5th grade in June, he crossed over from Cub Pack 315 and into Boy Scout Troop 315, both chartered by St. Anastasia Church, for boys of any denomination interested in being a Scout. With father Gary having been a member of Boy Scout Troop 315 himself, and son Ty now on the trail to Scouting’s highest honor rank of Eagle Scout, Boy Scout Troop 315 finally has its first father-and-son combination since being chartered in 1947. Congratulations to Ty and Cole Sebra, on your success as Pinewood Derby World Champions! You are both winners who have made your parents and our community proud. Publisher’s Note: As the father of three Eagle Scouts, and one still on the Trail to Eagle, I must thank the Sebra Family for their support of Scouting. My family also has fond memories of Pinewood Derby races at Cub Pack 315. Over the past 18 years, I’ve witnessed hundreds of boys become well-rounded youth in our community through their participation in Scouting values, activities and service projects. I am proud to recommend Cub Pack 315 (for boys, ages 6 -12), and Boy Scout Troop 315 (for boys ages 12 -18). Allergies and

Chiropractic Care Countless people struggle with allergies each year. With fall approaching, we are in peak season for Ragweed-fueled allergies. Some people are affected so greatly by allergies that it prohibits them from enjoying any outdoor activity, and still leaves them dreading the sore throat, itchy eyes and/or runny nose they can pretty much count on, all symptoms of their allergic reaction. But to what? And why at this most beautiful time of the year? In North America, ragweed plants have their greatest effect as an allergen during the fall season. One plant can produce up to a billion grains of pollen per season! Winds carry pollen from ragweed plants for hundreds of miles, creating a substantial

effect this time of year. All the unpleasant symptoms are brought on by inflammatory reactions in our bodies, or more commonly referred to as histamine. How do we combat allergies? The same way our bodies fight off any illness: with our immune system. That system is in place to combat foreign substances by using protective proteins, or antibodies, to keep us healthy and safe. This is where our nervous system comes in because it controls every function of the body, including our immune system. This is the most crucial system in the body because it controls our movement, how our organs function, and even how our body heals. All of those functions are possible because our nervous system feeds information to our brain.

When the body’s spine is misaligned, the nervous system cannot function properly because the information received by the brain is either incomplete or cut off entirely. This is the number one factor in the human body that interrupts the flow of information to the brain. Subluxation, or misalignment in the spine, weakens the immune system and causes it to function improperly. Because subluxation of the spine can be caused by our daily activities, it’s important to take care of our spine. Chiropractic care is a natural way of addressing misalignment of the spine. Once your spine is regularly aligned, the proper flow of information to the brain is restored, and the immune system is strengthened.

Celebrate and Honor Veterans with Your Support by Bob Blaisse

Operation First Response will host its first-ever Gala of Courage Saturday, November 2, at the Drexelbrook Special Events Center, 4700 Drexelbrook Dr, Drexel Hill. The theme for this 6-11pm event is “Honoring Heroes from Combat & The Homefront.” The Keynote Speaker will be retired Navy SEAL Robert O’Neill. Senior Chief Petty Officer O’Neill served in over 400 combat missions through four theaters of war. He is most well known for having served justice to Osama bin Laden while on a mission with SEAL Team Six. This Gala will benefit 501(c)(3) nonprofits Operation First Response and the Michael Strange Foundation, both of which help wounded military veterans and their families in need.

Master of Ceremonies WPHT 1210AM Talk Radio Host Rich Zeoli will also introduce several other speakers: Thomas “Drago” Dzieran, former political refugee from Poland and retired Navy SEAL; U.S. Marine Corps Corporal Tony “Ronny” Porta, who was severely injured in action in Iraq; Peggy Baker, mother of a combat veteran and founder of Operation First Response; and Charles Strange, Gold Star parent and founder of the Michael Strange Foundation. Show your support for these two great causes and the veterans they serve! A $100 ticket includes the General Reception, Auction, Dinner and Speakers. A $250 VIP ticket includes all that plus an invitation to the early-arrival Meet & Greet Reception 5:30 - 7pm. For tickets and sponsorship opportunities, visit www.GalaOfCourage.com. NS

Is Your Gas Fireplace

Scott’s Fireplace Products

WINTER-READY? Yes, the thrill of summer is behind us. The cooler brisk air can be felt along with the distinct fall aroma beginning to settle in. The boardwalks and swimming pools have closed, and schools have now opened. The school year is under way, filled with our children’s after-school activities and all the fall sports. As pumpkin patches open, beer gardens begin flowing and fall festivals take center stage, we tend to push off thinking about our gas fireplaces until the last minute.

for service during the cold winter months by being proactive and having their fireplace cleaned and serviced in the early fall. Gas fireplaces do require a level of maintenance similar to house furnaces and air conditioning systems. As long as they are maintained properly, they can provide heat and ambiance without interruption during frigid winter days. You can expedite your call to schedule a service appointment by providing several important facts about your gas fireplace: 1. The manufacturer and model (some gas fireplaces should be serviced more frequently than others); 2. Whether the gas fireplace damper can be opened (vented) or if it’s always closed (vent free); 3. Is behind a solid single glass window? (direct vent). So, enjoy the fall transition from summer to winter. But don’t forget about the gas fireplace. Getting it serviced prior to the cold winter months helps homeowners avoid a potential operation lapse or a long frustrating wait for service. NS

Gas fireplaces add wonderful ambiance to any room, and can be great heat supplements, especially if an unfortunate power outage occurs. But they have a nasty habit of not working when homeowners need them most. When that happens, the common next step is to call the establishment the gas fireplace came from and request a service appointment. The common response is that there’s already an extreme backlog for service. This is because many homeowners do not think about service or maintenance until their gas fireplace is not functioning properly. This always seems to happen in the middle of winter if a gas fireplace is not properly maintained, Preventive maintenance is the best type of maintenance. Homeowners with gas fireplaces can avoid waiting several weeks

Newtown Square Homeowner’s Solution For Sewer Tie-In Savings There are TWO OPTIONS for Sewer Tie-Ins with Township Approval 1. Traditional 4" Gravity System

2. Directional Drilling System

Digging Down to The Sewer Main

Underground Horizontal Drilling

Pros • A Gravity System with a clean out, relies on gradually sloping pipelines for downhill sewage flow. • The sewage flows away from the property and into a sewer main, offering peace of mind for many years. Con • Installing a Gravity System will significantly disturb the homeowner’s landscaping.

Pros • A Directional Drilling System is installed by tunneling underground horizontally, under gardens, driveways and other man-made obstacles. • Installation requires far less disturbance of landscaping. Cons • A Directional Drilling System requires a duplex grinder pump with battery backup (in the event of power loss). • Directional Drilling Systems require bi-annual servicing and owner monitoring.
