Newtown Square, PA
Dear Friends & Neighbors, June has arrived, and with it Summer 2020. Welcomed times are ahead, even as social distancing is still forecast as a major driver of summer activities. At least we will be driving to summer activities, even if remaining six feet apart when we get there!

From all my time at home, I’ve renewed my values rooted in home life and family. Sure, it was not easy for six of us to be homebound together, but it was that time in our family history. When my four sons are all out on their own, this year of 2020 won’t just be pandemic history; it will be a memory of family togetherness I’ll recall with fond memories.

These months have also renewed my strong belief that Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine is a force for goodwill and hometown pride, a “social media in print” (and online at www.NewtownSquareMag.com), always delivered with social distancing as a “take-out” pleasure, taken monthly from your mailbox. In recent months, Newtown Square’s hometown magazine was read more than ever, and helped more than ever with our Mission of Bringing People Together, for thousands of Newtown Square residents homebound during social distancing. Your emails and calls have confirmed that, and also how our magazine delivered a hometown connection when friends and neighbors could not visit in person. And all because of the continued support of our Sponsors, who, while forced to close their businesses, wanted Newtown Square residents to continue to receive their monthly hometown magazine. I am so proud of our community. I hope you’ll enjoy reading our June issue. If you find yourself returning to normal life, please find a way to thank our front-line workers for their service, and please return our Sponsors’ support by buying local, particularly from the business leaders who kept Bringing People Together through our magazine while we were required to stay at home. They are MY heroes.

The Smith Family:
Megan and Colin Smith
Ties That Have Turned Family into Neighbors The Smith Family is a true Delco family. Colin and Megan Smith are content with the simple things in life: Barbecues with family, time spent at the shore, family dinners, nights out with friends, and time with their two daughters. Colin was born in Broomall and moved to Newtown Square when he was two years old. He attended St. Anastasia School and Cardinal O’Hara High School in Springfield, where he played football, baseball and was a member of the Student Council. He continued his education at Penn State University and graduated in 2006 with a degree in Supply Chain and Information Systems. Megan has lived in Broomall since 1984. She went to St. Pius X grade school and also attended Cardinal O’Hara High School where she played basketball, softball and was a member of the Community Service Corps and Student Council. Megan graduated from LaSalle University in 2005, with a degree in Elementary/ Special Education and American Studies. She continued her education at Cabrini College, for a Masters in Education in 2009 and followed it up with a Reading Specialist Certificate. Colin and Megan knew of each other in high school, but not all that well. It turned out that Colin was friends with Megan’s cousin. Fast forward to 2009, when they all ended up at Barnaby’s one night. “Colin and I started talking,” Megan said, “and it was just easy. Shortly after that night, we started dating.” They got married in August of 2012 at St. Anastasia’s Church and honeymooned at an all-inclusive resort in Aruba. The couple started their married life in a townhouse in East Goshen. 6
Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors

Colin and Megan have two beautiful girls. Cassidy, a sweet fouryear-old, attends Newtown Square Presbyterian Preschool. She loves all things girly but also has a sporty side. She enjoys playing with her Barbies and choosing her own accessories. She also loves to play soccer outside with her friends and cousins, and enjoys dance lessons at From the Top Dance. “Cassidy has an incredible memory. If I can’t find something, she is the first person I ask,” Megan said. Cailyn is a strong-willed and silly three-year-old who loves being outside. She attends the Mother’s Day Out Program at Newtown Square Presbyterian. She likes to swim and also enjoys taking dance lessons with big sister Cassidy. At the playground, Cailyn is always trying to keep up with her older sister and cousins. The Smith family also has a dog named Daly. “She has been with us every step of the way as our family has grown!” said the Smiths. Out of college, Colin worked at Sunoco in transportation supply chain and logistics that led to his career at Accenture in 2012. Colin is a Logistics Procurement Project Manager. “It’s interesting,” Colin said, “because I get to work with a variety of clients and stakeholders as well as projects all on a global scale.” Every summer during high school and college, Megan worked at Camp Rainbow at St. Edmond’s Home for Children in Radnor. That was not only rewarding, it also led to her career. For the past 15 years, Megan worked at Worrall Elementary School, first as a Special Education Teacher and now as a Reading Specialist. “My job is a gift,” Megan said, “I get to work with amazing
children, help them grow, bond with them, and connect with their parents. It’s an easy job for me. Every day is rewarding.” When Megan is out and about in the community, she often sees children she has taught. She attends many Worrall events. “I think it’s important for the students to see me show up not just at school, but to support them in all areas.” Colin coaches his daughter Cassidy’s soccer team for the Township and was planning on being her softball Coach for Newtown Square Petticoat League this spring. He also enjoys exercising and golfing. Megan and Colin belong to the Ellis Athletic Center for exercising and the events held there for families. They also enjoy walking to the library and taking the girls to the playground. Megan and Colin have such close family ties that most of them even live on the same street, Elgin Circle. Five years ago, they knew they wanted to move, but didn’t have any definite plans until Megan came across a house for sale on the same street where Colin’s parents lived. “I loved growing up on that street!” he said.“It has the ballparks, the playground, just an allaround great neighborhood.” Two days later, the Smiths made an offer. “Now, my brother Matt and his family live on the street too,” saidColin. Megan’s family may not live on the same street, but they are still all close by. Her brother and his family live in Broomall and Megan’s parents, aunts and uncles also live in Newtown Square. “Growing up, my cousins and I lived in the same neighborhood and now we are raising all our children together.” It’s really special to all be close together,” Megan said.
Cailyn and Cassidy Smith
Growing up, Colin and Megan both spent their summers at the beach. Colin’s grandparents had a house in Sea Isle, while Megan’s grandparents owned a house in Brigantine. Now, they are fortunate enough to have their own family home in Sea Isle. It’s a duplex: They own one half, and Megan’s aunt and uncle own the other half. “We even have a connecting door on the deck,” Megan said. They enjoy playing and relaxing on the beach, walking to a nearby playground and, of course, spending time with their family. “Our girls love their time at the beach, playing with their cousins,” Colin said. Family is very important to the Smiths and the fact that they are just a walk up the street means the world to them. Colin and Megan love hosting Sunday dinners in their home. “We want our home to be the place where people always want to gather,” Colin said. From family barbecues and the girls spending their days with both sets of grandparents to time spent together at the shore, family is a priority for them. “We are fortunate enough that our parents and even our siblings’ in-laws are all friends now,” Colin said. “Both families have truly blended into one.” The Newtown Square community means a lot to Colin and Megan, and not only because it’s where they grew up. They take great pride in raising their children here. “Not only is this a beautiful place to live,” Megan noted, “but the people in this community genuinely care for each other.”

An Outdoor Oasis in Your Own Back Yard! Photo courtesy of JHL Landscaping
It’s finally the kind of weather that draws us outdoors for lounging, retreats with nature and impromptu picnics! During mild and warm weather months, an outdoor oasis in your back yard extends your living space, allows you to comfortably and frequently enjoy nature, and gives you more options for entertaining. The design and construction of outdoor living space that includes one or more focal areas made of different types of solid natural materials is called Hardscaping. Typical hardscape design considerations include the amount and shape of available space, how you intend or expect to use the space, how you want it to look, and your budget for the project. Sq A Ne ua w re tow Or n igi na l
Entertain Outdoors this Summer!
The most basic and common hardscapes are patios and walkways, which can be made using many types of materials such as stone, pavers, flagstone, brick, and concrete. Large pavers or even larger slabs create a streamlined, more contemporary look and feel, and tend to install more quickly, enabling you to start enjoying your dream patio in less time. Covered patios provide rain-or-shine use. Beautiful patios and walkways can add a great deal of value to your home when they’re done right and flow as extensions of your home into your landscaping. Other outdoor living focal areas are a kitchen or bar, and areas for dining and lounging. The possibilities are endless, with seating ideas and configuration designed around your personal taste and budget. An outdoor kitchen can include all the “accessories” (grill, pizza oven, stovetop burners, full-size oven, refrigerator, drawers for utensils and storage) or be as simple as some counter space for food prep and buffet-style dining. Hardscapes often include a fire pit or a fireplace, for year-round ambiance and warmth on chilly evenings. Everyone loves sitting around a cozy fire pit, roasting marshmallows and creating memories with family and friends! Some hardscapes include water features such as ponds, waterfalls and fountains, all of which are soothing and mesmerizing. Hardscape design and construction requires an in-depth understanding of appropriate and durable materials, space requirements, irrigation systems and proper grading to ensure adequate drainage. Your vision can become a reality when designed, planned and installed by specialists who work with you, side by side, from the initial design meeting until the project is completed to your satisfaction. This month, ALL 2020 Graduates are the June Sproul Lanes Students of the Month! Despite deep disappointments over canceled ceremonies and celebrations, the memories of these times will undoubtedly help the Class of 2020 carry forward the resourcefulness, creativity and compassion they practiced and exhibited during Spring 2020. The 2020 Grads featured here since September shared their thoughts about what they ’ve learned during these unprecedented times. SEPT2019 SOTM Tyler Lynch discovered he actually misses school (!), and that his day is a lot easier when he manages his time and makes a list of things to do. DEC2019 SOTM Mike Volpe is grateful for having noticed and learned many things, especially about himself, and he hopes to incorporate these new insights into his daily routine. And MAY2020 SOTM Evan Duff said that having everything taken away from 2020 grads so quickly has brought his class together and has created lasting connections and friendships like no other event could.

The Assisted Living
M yt h
For many individuals, the words “Assisted Living” can conjure up scary images that evoke the notion of losing independence in an institutionalized, hospital-like setting. For many seniors, that perception is based upon past experiences such as nursing homes of the 1960s and 1970s, in which their loved ones may have had negative experiences. Today’s Assisted Living (AL) or Personal Care (PC)* communities are very different from 60 years ago. Now, they’re designed to cover health management, safety, social engagement, and quality of life for the residents. They offer bright, comfortable residences of all sizes, engaging programming based on the residents’ preferences, and peace of mind that any and all care needs can be addressed.
Understanding Senior Living Options Can Be Overwhelming and Confusing
Safety is another key benefit of moving into a PC community. It’s understandable that most seniors would prefer to stay in their own home, which is familiar and full of memories. But most homes are not designed for walkers or wheelchairs, which many seniors need to safely “age in place.” This design mismatch often results in seniors spending more and more time in a small section of their house. PC communities are specifically designed as a safe residence: Handrails, grab bars, elevators, personal alert devices and emergency pull cords are all standard. This safer environment reduces stress for seniors and also for their families.
A Free, Personalized Senior Housing Placement Service For:
The best way to dispel the myths associated with these communities is to get information and tour those near you. If social distancing requirements or other factors make in-person tours not an option for you, many communities offer virtual tours and/or video walkthroughs.
• • • • • • • •
The senior living industry has revolutionized itself into something to be celebrated. Seniors can set themselves up for a future of independence through reassuring avenues of care, safety, and socialization. A move to a PC community can and should be considered the beginning of a new adventure!

Many seniors feel a move to a community epitomizes a loss of independence, and it’s the next step in their ever-shrinking world. Many no longer drive; social networks get smaller as people age; family and friends may not visit as often; and perhaps a spouse has passed, leaving these individuals more isolated and lonely than ever before. A move to a senior living community can change all that! Maintaining independence is a priority for communities and residents alike, so residents can continue doing what they enjoy, for as long as possible. Once a senior has help with tasks they struggle with (e.g., making meals, bathing, home maintenance), they are empowered in every other aspect of their life.

Babylights and Balayage for a
Beautiful You!
Babylights are a very fine, delicate highlight created using a hair-coloring technique that mimics the subtle, dimensional hair color of children’s hair. To make your color look fresh and natural, Babylights are a technique used to create a style. In hair coloring, stylists combine many techniques, to achieve a desired look. Babylights are most commonly used when creating balayage, by blending the tones together, having the colors flow seamlessly. Gone are the days of stylists having just one hair-coloring trick in their bag and using it for everyone! Balayage (pronounced bah-ley-AHZH) is a French coloring technique developed in the 1970s. The word means to sweep or to paint (by a hair colorist), using free-handing painting to brush color directly onto hair. Today, the desire for balayage hair color services has become one of the most sought-after salon services, making it now a timeless piece of art in the hairstyling industry, after being forgotten for a while in the ’80s. But after 20 years, balayage came back, and now it’s the most in-demand salon color technique. And for good reasons too! Babylights grow out beautifully and without harsh lines, requires little maintenance (far less than traditional hair coloring), and allows for a longer period between colorings. But are babylights suitable for all hair types and lengths of hair? Yes indeed! The technique can be used on all canvases, to create a soft blended look. Whether your hair is straight, wavy or curly, the color will still work and look great. And because regrowth is less noticeable, babylights are a great alternative for those who desire a low-maintenance hairstyle.
Babylights are such a great hair-coloring technique that the demand for it has increased year after year. Are Babylights here to stay? Yes, but finding a stylist who can apply a babylight technique to suit your hairstyle and face shape is key! If you are thinking about coloring your hair and considering a slower path, you should start with an end goal in mind. Your stylist can discuss your hair color goal with you and schedule out ahead, to ensure your hair is on its way to healthy, beautiful coloring with a more natural, breezy and sun-kissed look and appeal. Bringing People Together
Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors
Our Local Business Leaders Will Be Bringing People (Back) Together! With nearly all businesses closed except those declared to be essential, I could argue every business is essential when they are a Sponsor of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors. In speaking with our Sponsors during these times of quarantine, I can assure you these times are especially difficult for most of our hometown business leaders. But they all know life will return to normal, and our magazine Sponsors hold great hope their loyal customers will return with intention to Buy Local with gratitude for their keeping our magazine coming in the mail during the months we were homebound. I asked one of Sponsors and Expert Contributors, Michele Quinn, owner of Blush Salon, to share some of her thoughts about these times. Michele has allowed me to share her thoughts with our readers.
How have these past months been for you as an owner of a business forced to be closed? Michele: The quarantine has me feeling a lot of different emotions, as I’m sure most business owners can understand. To start, I’m missing what used to be my usual day-to-day routine:
Waking up, drinking coffee while doing my hair and makeup for the day, and getting dressed in anything other than sweatpants! Now, I look in the mirror to see the same messy bun, my face free of makeup, outgrown roots with my highlighted blonde ends. And my haircut is barely a style anymore. I know all the women out there can relate! And on the other side, I have been faced with many decisions, all which are based upon the uncertain future. Making sure that those decisions are best for employees financially, their career and overall livelihood, and best for our guests as well. I’m keeping up on social media so we can stay connected the only way we know how during this time. I cannot wait to reopen our salons and get back to doing what I love! It hurts to know our clients need us and we have had to be closed so long.
Is the hardest part not knowing when you can reopen? Michele: Oh yeah! That’s the question I have no answer for. It’s very tough, and things are constantly changing. First April, then May, now crossing our fingers for June. Fortunately, our clients send us continuous love and support. This will come to an end. And I cannot thank each and every one of our clients enough for their understanding, patience, and support. We love you!

Can you be operating your business in other ways? Michele: We’re offering virtual consultations, product pickups, and we’re keeping our guests up to date through emails. In this unsure, crazy time we’re living in, we are sure of one thing: When we can finally open our doors, we know we’ll be flooded with appointments and we can’t wait! When that time comes, we’ll be opening earlier and closing later, and of course, as always, open 7 days a week.
Will things change when Blush Salon is able to reopen? Michele: A lot will change. We will have restrictions and guidelines to follow. To name a few: mandatory masks, washing your hands upon entry, when pulling into the parking lot for your appointment, you’ll have to call from your car, to let us know you’re here, rather than coming into the waiting area in the salon. Only half our employees will be allowed to be working at one time. We will do everything that’s required and even more, to create a safe and healthy environment for everyone who walks through our doors.
What would you like to share with our Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors Readers? Michele: First and foremost: We miss you! But on a more serious note, we know it’s always asked for readers to shop local, and not just with Sponsors of the magazine but all small businesses. It’s more important than ever to support our town. And lastly: Get ready to look and feel better than ever because Blush Salon is ready to help our Newtown Square clients look and feel the best they have ever looked!

Business Profile
A Family-Style Auto Repair Shop By Christina Manning Photos courtesy of Edgemont Automotive
Your car is the vehicle you trust to get you and your family to the places you need to go safely. Whether you’re driving to a business meeting, taking your child to college or heading down to the beach, you depend on your car to get you to your destination. Therefore, where you take your car for repairs matters. In Newtown Square, you won’t find a more honest and trustworthy repair shop than Edgemont Automotive. Such a well-deserved reputation is due to Owner Lou Matteo and his hard-working team. Born in South Philly, Lou Matteo was only one-year-old when his family moved to Glenolden in Delaware County. As a young child, matchbox cars and tonka trucks were his toys of choice. Later, model cars became a fascination, along with helping his

dad assemble any new household item. At 13 years old, Lou landed a job at a corner gas station in Clifton Heights. The more time he spent there, the more his fascination with all types of vehicles grew. He saved up his earnings to buy a 4-wheel ATV, making all the repairs and upgrades. “There is something about taking things apart and putting things back together that really interests me,” Lou said. During junior high, he played football until he had to choose between football or the automotive repair program in Folcroft and Marple Vo-tech schools. It turns out, the love of cars and all things mechanical was just too strong. In 1996, Lou started working at Edgemont Automotive, a primary automotive repair company. Lou’s skills helped him quickly move up, from technician to manager. He purchased and became owner of Edgemont Automotive in 2015. “We do anything from repairs and engine performance to computer diagnostics. Anyone who has something with wheels needs us,” said Lou. The state-of-the-art equipment at Edgemont Automotive can handle anything. They have the ability to fix everything from bicycles and motorcycles to the oldest and newest cars. They can even help with your garage door when they come to pick up your car.
“
I’ve been seeing the same customers for the past 20 years, and some of them have become my good friends.
”
Customers have described Edgemont Automotive as ‘family-style auto-repair.” Lou’s oldest son, Louis, has worked for the business for the past three years, and everyone else on Lou’s team has worked there 25+ years. “Being with my group of guys really makes the day enjoyable and fun. This isn’t just a business; it’s what I truly enjoy,” Lou said. The type of environment Edgemont Automotive has makes even the customers feel part of the group. “I’ve been seeing the same customers for the past 20 years,“ Lou said, “and some of them have become my good friends.”
Lou currently lives in East Goshen with his wife Mirella, three children and their pit bull, Blue. Lou’s extended family is the team at Edgemont Automotive, located at 5040 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square. Rich Books starts your auto repair process, taking your information and dropping you off at home or work. Lead Technician Chris Taylor is a mechanical wizard. Joel Cody, a lifetime Edgemont and Newtown Square resident, has 20+ years’ experience and can make even the most difficult days bearable and fun for the team and also for customers. This team’s automotive diagnostic and repair experience is only surpassed by the care and concern for customers’ safety and wellbeing. “These guys feel like my family. I couldn’t have done this without them.” Whenever a customer leaves happy with a working car, that’s a win for Lou. “It’s worth more than all the money, knowing you solved the problem and the customer is driving away happy.” If Lou Matteo could give you one piece of advice, it would be this: “Safety comes first. Whether you’re dealing with COVID-19, your car, or even crossing the street: Be safe.”

Celebrating Your Loved One’s Life While Social Distancing Funerals and memorial services are usually a time for people to gather together, console each other and celebrate the life of a loved one. But with social distancing orders in place, it’s challenging to find safe ways to hold funerals and memorial services. Funeral directors can help families find creative ways to celebrate their loved ones who have passed during this pandemic.

A Modified Viewing You can still have a viewing of your loved one while incorporating social distancing. By having the number of people limited to only a few visiting at a time, you can minimize the amount of contact that guests have with one another. Until in-person gatherings are possible again, you can still celebrate your loved ones after they have passed. Whether you choose one or more of these ideas, or decide to postpone the funeral or memorial service to a future date, you do not have to give up on celebrating your loved one’s life. NS

Healthier Drinking for the Summer Season There may not be a truly “healthy” option when it comes to cocktails and wine. But you don’t need to completely forego your healthy summer habits when looking to indulge. Certain tricks and habits can help you quench your thirst responsibly and in a healthier way. Low-ABV (Low Alcohol by Volume) and low-calorie cocktails are on trend and easy to find. Ketel One Vodka has a low-calorie, no-carb and no-GMO line called Ketel One Botanicals. There are

three flavors: Peach & Orange Blossom, Grapefruit & Rose and Cucumber Mint. Infused with all-natural botanicals, a standard 1.5-oz serving contains only 73 calories, compared to almost 100 calories in the standard serving of regular vodka. Mix with club soda and add fresh garnishes like blueberries and mint. Using fresh and nutritious garnishes like antioxidant-rich berries are great ways to get in a serving of fruit. If you are looking to add a little sweetness to your drink, you can muddle the berries and/or use .25 oz of agave nectar. Some other low-calorie alcohol options include Stoli Elit vodka, which serves up an extra-dry martini for under 200 calories, and Don Julio Blanco tequila. Squeeze yourself some fresh lime juice, add a splash of agave nectar, and you have yourself a “skinny” margarita! Regardless of your spirit of choice, every cocktail-enjoying household should have a jigger. Bartenders use a jigger to ensure the correct portion of each ingredient in a cocktail. A jigger will help you correctly measure the amount needed for a standard 1.5-oz serving. If you prefer a glass of wine, try looking for “Natural” and/or Minimal Intervention wines. These wines are typically from very small producers who aim to leave a small carbon footprint. Many wine regions in the U.S. have loads of little wineries making wine this way — without the usual manipulation and additives. Planet Oregon Wines from the Willamette Valley in Oregon is a great vineyard to consider. You can also look for wines made from grapes that are farmed biodynamically. The idea of biodynamics is that everything in the universe is interconnected, from vines on the ground to the moon, planets and stars. Biodynamic viticulture (grape growing) is the practice of balancing these relationships using a holistic view of agriculture. If you tend to prefer organic products, these wines are for you.

Real Estate
Goes Virtual In our new environment since the arrival of COVID-19, the uncertainty that comes along with planning a move is amplified. Pennsylvania is the last state in the country to continue restricting Realtors from doing in-person showings. Hopefully, by the time this article is published, those restrictions will be lifted. Until then, and even after that time, COVID-19 has forever changed the home-buying and home-selling process. Some changes are for the better. Realtors are now forced to employ technology that will make buying or selling a home easier and more efficient in most cases. While nothing can replace the experience of stepping foot into a potential new home, thankfully the best Realtors know how to employ cutting-edge technology, to make your home ownership dreams come true.

3D Tours and Virtual Showings Until now, browsing real estate online included browsing dozens of still photos, some videos and a few drone shots. But now, 3D technology, once too expensive to use regularly, has advanced and the cost has become more affordable. 3D photography allows the home shopper to experience 360 degrees of each room and floor. In addition, Realtors and Sellers are performing real-time Virtual Showings of properties. Virtual Showings can be done privately with just one Buyer, or as a public forum similar to an “open house.” This increases efficiency for home Buyers who spend less traveling time to/from any property. Sellers are able to reach many more potential buyers in less time this way, and can give personal tours of the home without the added stress of wear-and-tear from dozens of groups coming through the property.

The in-person Home Buyer and Home Seller Consultation is a critical part of a successful experience. It is an opportunity for the home buyer/seller to meet with one or more Realtors, to learn about the process, ask questions, and decide which professional to partner with, while the Realtor learns more about the client in order to best serve their needs. History Spotlight
Join the Parade! Written by and photos courtesy of Doug Humes Newtown and Marple Townships have been hosting a 4th of July Parade since at least 1946. The Marple parade in those early years was sponsored by the Broomall Business Association, and Nelson Leroy Kirk was one of the original founders. The many others who have contributed over the years have been lost to time. In the mid-1950s, the townships joined forces under the auspices of the Marple Newtown Jaycees. The parade events grew to include a flag-raising ceremony, fire trucks, local and regional marching bands, floats and decorated bikes, Little Leaguers, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and politicians in convertibles. The events continued at night, with live music (a Hootenanny in 1964!), fireworks, and speeches by visiting dignitaries such as U.S. Senator Hugh Scott. By 1985, the Jaycees organization had dwindled to just a few members, and the parade was threatened with cancellation due to lack of organizers. Businessmen from each community came together, to breathe new life into the parade, and it continues to be one of the largest parades in Delaware County.
The award-winning Marvelous Marchers!
When I moved to the area in 1991, I started attending the parade with my children, and noticed in particular a neighborhood group, the Marvelous Marchers, having a great time doing silly themes each year. Once they marched in beachwear with beach chairs and did a synchronized routine of unfolding and sitting down in their chairs. I was fortunate enough to become friends with several of the group’s members, and for five years, my family marched with the Marvelous Marchers. We marched as giant fish, as hillbillies, and in my favorite year, the men were all “Guys Named Frank” (Sinatra, Rizzo, etc.) – wearing giant foam hot dog costumes. Our wives were dressed as chefs, and our kids as condiments. By then, I had risen to serve as the group’s choreographer, and I have fond memories

Two Common
Roofing Errors
Each individual roofer’s experience is a large part of their expertise. But customers are typically better served by a roofing company with decades of experience in efficiently and correctly identifying the source and cause of roof leaks and issues. Discovering a roof ’s excess moisture problems can be a complex process due to multiple factors such as ventilation, masonry walls and complex flashing situations. But many leaks are created when a roofer ignores building code and manufacturer requirements, thereby also ignoring the fundamentals of proper roof installation. When a roof leaks, it’s rarely the product’s fault; it’s usually human error or poor workmanship.
Here are two very common causes of roof issues: Improper Preparation of or Unsatisfactory Decking Experienced roofers know that they never know what they’ll find after removing the old roofing material. That’s why every roofing company’s contract has a clause that speaks to the pricing and handling of plywood or decking replacement, which always requires an on-site judgement call as roof replacement gets started. Such decisions should not be taken lightly because they will affect the lifespan of your new roof. The most innocent of knotholes in an 80-year-old piece of pine or slight

dry rot or delamination of plywood will most certainly create issues rather quickly. A roof deck must be tight, solid and thick enough for nails to hold correctly and shingles to remain flat for 30+ years. The price of every sheet of plywood or foot of board typically determines how well it will preserve the integrity of your investment. If a roof seems expensive now, try paying for it twice within the first five years. If there’s ever a concern about the roof decking, opt for all new.
Poor Nail Placement/Overdriven Nails Improper nailing can cause leaks that may not start for 10 years after a roof is installed. Tracing such leaks can be like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Even though every package of shingles has the nail placement pattern written on it, many roof installers don’t read the package or whoever trained them or inspected their work hadn’t been on enough roofs to know how important proper nailing is. This issue, which can also be due to an installer focusing more on speed than craftsmanship, paves the way for premature leakage and roof failure as well as complete roof blow-offs. This common mistake can be avoided by hiring a company that specifically addresses the importance of proper nailing during a sales appointment. NS

Entertaining and Educational E-vents by Christina Manning
“When in the course of human events,” government officials require citizens to protect public health and safety by practicing social distancing, our towns’ and cities’ usual gathering places are not available to us. Organizations are not planning our usual delightful array of local events for June. As we are all temporarily “netizens” only, our Calendar pages here offer E-vents — online tours, activities and live or on-demand videos that can entertain and educate people of all ages.

Class of 2020 by Bob & Jean Blaisse Proud Parents
Let’s Recognize All Graduates of Any Class of 2020.* And Please, Indulge These Two Proud Parents. Photos courtesy of Bob Blaisse
For months, we’ve been social distancing. We have sacrificed so much to save lives during a world pandemic. Locally, our stay-and-shelter mandates required us to sacrifice social contact and social activities. We now easily recognize and appreciate the contributions by those on the front lines of the Coronavirus, where essential workers treat the sick and also serve in our communities, to keep us safe and keep us fed. Our lives changed. We traded social contacts for online Facetime friendships and Zoom meetings, and waving to those we saw while walking in our neighborhoods. We all see all how social distancing has forced us to sacrifice so much for our own safety and the safety of others. We miss the seasonal events of Spring, and we know this summer will be different too. But most disappointing are the canceled life events, which may never be rescheduled. On Sunday, June 21st, our sons — John, Joe, Jimmy and Jerry — will likely plan some special Father’s Day celebrations. I (Bob) am very honored to be a Dad. But I would trade Father’s Day honors for years if only the graduates of the Class of 2020 could be honored with the graduation ceremonies that may never happen, with the pomp and circumstance of ceremonial honors that graduates deserve, to be recognized among their classmates, with friends and family attending. As we remember to thank active military and veterans and first responders for their service, and to honor essential workers on the front lines of service during the pandemic, let’s also reach out this month to graduates of any Class of 2020, to offer similar respectful praise and acknowledgement of their achievement. Sadly, there will likely be no formal or festive ceremonies for students graduating from elementary school, middle school, high school, trade school, or a college or university. That is sad for our youth. Let’s honor fathers and grandfathers on Father’s Day. But all month, let’s also acknowledge Class of 2020 graduates whose long-anticipated graduation ceremony as a life event may be permanently sacrificed for safety. Let’s make that effort to lavishly extend our social praise for each graduate’s achievement, with our best wishes for continued success in their next life chapter. Ceremonies are not needed to graduate. It is hard work needed to fulfill graduation requirements and earn a diploma. The Class of 2020 may carry an asterisk after their year, inviting 30

recognition that more was required of those graduates due to the sudden transition to online learning and the required loss of social contact students would have had with their teachers and classmates for several months before graduation. The Class of 2020 was tested. Stay and Shelter was their internship. They all passed, and they all deserve our social recognition! Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors salutes the graduates of the Class of 2020. We applaud your special achievement in these very special times, and we wish you continued success in the next stage of your schooling or your transition to your working career. Jimmy Blaisse: We’re So Proud of You! We had begun to see “signs” show up in our son Jimmy, a Class of 2020 graduate at Archbishop John Carroll High School in Radnor. Not signs of COVID-19 concern, but signs of “Senior-itis,” which we expected would appear in the second semester of his Senior year. It arrived for sure, triggered by warmer weather and planning for Senior Prom and the Senior Week celebration after June graduation. And then came the pandemic. Enjoying Senior year sports and school activities with friends would not happen. There would only be faces online while distance learning instead of in classrooms. The COVID-19 pandemic caused Jim to suddenly lose touch with school friends he may not see again. And he lost his weekend job as a Caddie at Rolling Green Golf Club, where he had planned to work mornings this summer before working as an EMT in the evenings. Jim was more than 200 hours into his EMT Certification course. But stay-and-shelter put that on hold, after he had given up winter weeknights and Saturdays to attend certification classes so he could pass the PA Certification
exam. Jim may no longer be able to gain that on-the-job EMT experience before heading off to college, to begin his Medical Studies with plans to become a Physician Assistant.

Like most students, Jim adapted to online learning, keeping his grades up while dreaming of Trout Season, until that too was canceled, but finally reopened with rules for social distancing on the stream. Our Jim is a true outdoorsman, and mostly selftaught too, as a master fly fisherman, a hunter, and camper, not unusual given he’s an Eagle Scout who was a youth leader of Boy Scout Troop 315 until he turned 18 last year.
Major in Medical Studies/ Physician Assistant
We are very happy for Jim, and yet a bit sad too, as all parents are for their graduates who worked hard for years but who, in this, their Senior year, have been denied the traditional Senior activities. Last fall, as a Scholar Athlete member of the Archbishop Carroll National Honor Society, Jim helped lead Carroll’s Varsity Golf Team. In the winter, it was Varsity Ice Hockey. But Jim’s hopes of playing three Varsity Team sports again this year at Archbishop Carroll were dashed when all sports were canceled and school was closed. There went Jim’s Senior year of playing centerfield again this year for Carroll’s Varsity Baseball Team. With all that has been lost for our family’s Class of 2020 graduate and all that still may not return to normal for a while longer, our several months of staying at home have given the Blaisse Family something we will now always remember from these times. In Spring 2020, our home was filled with non-stop conversation and activity. Our four sons were all home with us. A year from now, our oldest, John, will be getting married. And our youngest, Jerry, will be heading into his own Senior year of high school. And then what? We could be empty-nesting and our four sons could all be living away by that time. These past months of forced working from home and being all together more than ever will be remembered forever, perhaps with greater ease of fonder memories in years to come.
Jim, we are proud of all your successes, which now include graduating from high school. We look forward to your furthering your education as a member of DeSales University’s Class of 2024. We encourage you, and every Class of 2020 graduate in this year of the 2020 world pandemic, to remember how well you adapted to requirements of sudden change necessary to achieve your purpose and goals. In time, you’ll look back and understand that is how you must always adapt to meet life’s many challenges. Congratulations, Jim. And congratulations to every graduate of every school’s Class of 2020. You did it! NS

Summer Movies By Joseph J. Rutchik
Dirty Dancing (1987)
In 1963, sheltered teen Frances “Baby” Houseman (Jennifer Grey) vacations with her family to their Catskills country club. What starts off as a boring summer becomes a life-changing experience. She befriends the club’s eclectic staff, and starts a romance with Johnny (Patrick Swayze), the club’s swaggering dance instructor. Rated PG-13
Jaws (1975)
A great white shark attacks a young woman off the coast of a tourist town. The new police chief (Roy Scheider) wants to close the beaches, but he buckles under political pressure. When the attacks continue, he recruits a salty fisherman (Robert Shaw) and a young scientist (Richard Dreyfus) to hunt down the shark themselves. The music will still give you chills. Rated PG
A League of Their Own (1992)
During World War II, pro baseball stalled, and a women’s baseball league was formed. At the center of this fictional comedy-drama are sisters Dotty (Geena Davis), the catcher, and Kit (Lori Petty), the pitcher. Madonna and Rosie O’Donnell play their scrappy teammates. And Tom Hanks is brilliant as their manager looking for a comeback. Rated PG
National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983) What says “summer” to you? Family road trips? Baseball? The beach? Whether it’s summertime right now—or you just miss the warm weather—these flicks will help remind you of what’s great about those summer days.
Give your home the protection it deserves.

This comedy classic strikes a chord with anyone who’s ever gone on a family road trip. Chevy Chase stars as the lovable Clark Griswold, determined to give his family the perfect vacation—no matter what! Obstacles include filthy lodging, a cranky aunt, and car troubles in the desert. Beverly D’Angelo, Randy Quaid, and Anthony Michael Hall also star. Rated R

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2005)
Before going their separate ways for the summer, four teen girls (Blake Lively, Alexis Bledel, America Ferrera, and Amber Tamblyn) decide to share a pair of jeans as a way of staying connected. Their experiences include mental illness, parents remarrying, leukemia, and a family feud. For each girl, the pants become a source of empowerment and emotional support. Rated PG-13
Stand By Me (1986)
In the summer of 1959, four boys (Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, and Jerry O’Connell) journey to find the missing body of a boy killed by a train. As they encounter various obstacles (like leeches), their friendship grows even deeper. Kiefer Sutherland and John Cusack appear as members of a gang that also wants to find the body. Rated R
The Way, Way Back (2013)
Sullen teen Duncan (Liam James) is dragged on vacation to a Cape Cod beach house. Trying to avoid his mom (Toni Collette) and her abusive boyfriend (Steve Carrell), Duncan goes exploring and finds a rundown waterpark managed by Owen (Sam Rockwell), who hires Duncan. Meanwhile, Duncan connects with Susanna (AnnaSophia Robb), his beach house neighbor. Rated PG-13
West Side Story (1961)
Manhattan, 1957. There’s tension between two gangs: the white American Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. In the midst of this rivalry, a romance emerges between Tony (Richard Beymer) and Maria (Natalie Wood). This musical take on Romeo and Juliet features immortal songs like “America” and “Gee, Officer Krupke.” It won 10 Oscars, including Best Picture. Rated G

Newtown Square Homeowner’s Solution For Sewer Tie-In Savings There are TWO OPTIONS for Sewer Tie-Ins with Township Approval 1. Traditional 4" Gravity System
2. Directional Drilling System
Digging Down to The Sewer Main
Underground Horizontal Drilling
Pros • A Gravity System with a clean out, relies on gradually sloping pipelines for downhill sewage flow. • The sewage flows away from the property and into a sewer main, offering peace of mind for many years. Con • Installing a Gravity System will significantly disturb the homeowner’s landscaping.
Pros • A Directional Drilling System is installed by tunneling underground horizontally, under gardens, driveways and other man-made obstacles. • Installation requires far less disturbance of landscaping. Cons • A Directional Drilling System requires a duplex grinder pump with battery backup (in the event of power loss). • Directional Drilling Systems require bi-annual servicing and owner monitoring.
