This month we also make history with our newest Sponsor of Newtown Square residents, Penn Therapy Associates, led by Mark E. Reitz, PT, who has agreed to serve as our Expert Physical Therapist for the residents of Newtown Square. We asked readers who our Physical Therapist Expert should be, and our Reader Leaders responded. And Mark is off to a quick start with his first Expert Contributor feature in this month’s issue. Welcome to the family, Mark! We’re better off with your support. Penn Therapy Associates is the premier orthopedic therapies facility in our part of Delaware County. By combining state-of-the-art rehabilitation practices and protocols, 1–1 therapist-to-patient ratios and private consultation rooms (not out in the open in a gym-like environment), we have a new class act on our team. (See Penn Therapy Associates first sponsorship ad in month’s issue on page 10.) See you at the pool this summer and at the Marple Newtown 4th of July Parade next month, which this year will be held on Monday July 5th, so plan on celebrating outdoors. Happy Days are here again!

ON THE COVER Vram (“Ned”) and Sylvia Nedurian at their home in Newtown Square Together Bringing People
At this halfway point in the year, our magazine staff decided to graduate to something new too. With Historic Newtown Square Day being hosted by the Newtown Square Historical Society all over Newtown Square on the first Saturday in June, we decided to create a little bit of Newtown Square history for 2021 and name our Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors of the Year. Our first family: Sylvia and Ned Nedurian, whose many years of service and friendship to our community, and to their friends and neighbors, is an inspirational story you’ll enjoy reading on page 6. Congratulations, Ned and Sylvia!
Grab your lawn chairs — it’s time to celebrate the return of the Marple Newtown 4th of July Parade! Our Business Profile features Inevitable Wealth Coaching, owned by Investor Coach Brendan Magee. Since 1998, Brendan has been helping families rediscover and reclaim their American Dream. And last, but certainly not least, is our 2021 Friends & Neighbors of the Year, Ned and Sylvia Nedurian, whose friendliness and service to this community are worthy of many accolades. In fact, Newtown Township adopted a Resolution last June, recognizing Ned for over 50 years of service. And did I mention that Ned is turning 98 this month? We are looking for more Newtown Square families, individuals and organizations to feature in our magazine. If you’d like to nominate someone, please email me at STurnerHilliard@BestVersionMedia.com.

Resident Feature
The Nedurians
2021 Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors of the Year by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Photos by Sierra Clark Photography www.SierraClarkPhoto.com
We would like to thank
for sponsoring this month’s Resident Feature.
This month we are pleased to introduce you to the Nedurians: Our 2021 Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors of the Year. Vram “Ned” Nedurian and his wife, Sylvia, likely need no introduction as they have spent many years raising their family in Newtown Square and publicly serving our community. Newtown Square is in Ned’s blood. He first began spending time in our area in 1925, when his father, a physician, purchased land in the Larchmont Square section of town. The property served as a summer place where his family could relax and have fun. “There was a creek that ran through the property,” Ned recalled. “But my father wanted us to have a place to swim, so he dammed the creek and affectionately called it “Doc’s Pool.” Ned laughed when he described what it was like back then. “There was no electric, water or sewer. We really roughed it, but it was fun and felt a world away from our home on 55th and Pine St in Philadelphia.” Ned attended West Philadelphia High School, graduating in 1941. He went on to study at Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, but his time there was cut short when he was drafted to serve in World War II. Ned was a 19-year-old Army Private when he was sent overseas to join the 9th Infantry Division in Liege, Belgium. “I was wounded in the Battle of Hürtgen Forest, while attending to my Sergeant who had been shot in the head,” he said. “As I was trying to evacuate him, I was hit by shrapnel from a German 88 shell.” Ned’s service to his country and bravery on the battlefield earned him a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. When he was discharged in February 1946, he returned to Wharton, to continue his studies. 6

After Ned graduated from the Wharton School, he went on to study law at Dickinson Law School, and was admitted to the Delaware County Bar in June 1951. He then decided to settle down in Newtown Square, and he built a home on the land where he spent his summers as a child. He opened his law office on West Chester Pike above Mackey’s Pharmacy, and fully immersed himself into his law practice and service to his community. His impressive resume includes work as an elected Justice of the Peace, a position in which he served from 1958 – 1964. At the end of that term, he was sworn in at the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office where he served for 56 years before retiring on June 30, 2020. Ned was the Marple Newtown School District Solicitor for 25 years, Chairman of the Newtown Township Sewer Authority, and was well-known for enforcing Sunday Blue Laws that required businesses to be closed on Sundays. Ned’s service to our community continues today as a Board Member and a Charter Member of the Rotary Club of Newtown Square.

Ned’s wife Sylvia calls him “Mr. Newtown Square,” and after learning all that Ned has accomplished in his life and career, that designation is undisputable. Who else at the age of 97 has a Resolution passed by Newtown Township. to recognize over 50 years of service to the community? Ned does. The Resolution was adopted in February 2020, just a few months before his retirement. Current Township Supervisor Tina Roberts-Lightcap was one of the officials who passed the Resolution. “Ned is the reason I am a Township Supervisor today,” she said. “When he learned that I was interested in getting involved, he took me under his wing.”
Newtown Square with her son Michael. She began working as a Secretary in Ned’s law office, and they were married in August 1967, at the Delaware County Courthouse, by the honorable Judge VanRoden. At the time, Ned had four daughters of his own, so he and Sylvia began building their busy, blended life together in Newtown Square. Continued on page 8
Tina, who also happens to live across the street from Ned and Sylvia, said she feels very fortunate to not only have Ned as a mentor, but to have Ned and Sylvia as neighbors. “They welcomed my family with open arms 25 years ago, and we have enjoyed many good times together,” she shared. The Nedurians are proud that their children graduated from the Marple Newtown School District. Now that their kids are grown and have their own families, Sylvia and Ned enjoy spending time with their 15 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. The couple is also happy to say that four of their grandkids are Marple Newtown graduates, and three more grandkids and three great-grandkids reside right here in Newtown Square. Ned will be celebrating his 98th birthday this month, and has no plans to slow down. He and Sylvia are still very active both in the community and at home. They love to spend their time walking, landscaping, doing crossword puzzles, reading suspense novels and spending time with their children and grandchildren. On weekends, you’ll find Ned outside with his grandsons, weeding, planting and maintaining their beautiful yard. And this time of year is one of Sylvia’s favorites because it means baseball season. She is an avid Phillies fan who can name everyone on the roster without a hint of hesitation.

“Newtown Square has been our lives,” said Sylvia. “Ned has been here since 1925, and now I’ve lived here longer than any other place.” As a couple, Ned and Sylvia have enjoyed working and socializing together. Sylvia described a great time in their lives when they would regularly get together with other couples for what they called the Couples Gourmet. There were nine couples in the group that took turns hosting dinner parties. “We would all come with a dish that we prepared and discuss how to make each one,” she explained. “The best part is that I became a gourmet cook and now love to make all kinds of delicious meals.”

Both Ned and Sylvia said they miss the days of dinner parties, family gatherings and networking events. They hope that once we are all able to gather again, people will step away from their screens to not only gather with family and friends but to again participate in civic clubs and organizations that help to keep Newtown Square a vibrant, thriving community. Ned’s daughters were excited to learn that he and Sylvia were being recognized as 2021 Friends & Neighbors of the Year. They said, “We have incredible gratitude, respect and admiration for our Dad and Sylvia. They are amazing parents, grandparents and great-grandparents, and are a true inspiration to all of us. We are truly blessed that they have been a part of our lives for so many years.”

Think About Physical Therapy First Do you ever consider calling a physical therapist when you suffer a muscular ache, pain or sprain? How about when you wake up with a nagging pain in your back? Most folks simply call their doctor or begin to take medication that may not be necessary. Dozens of recent studies have demonstrated that the most effective, timely and cost efficient way to treat acute musculoskeletal injuries is to see a physical therapist first. Physical Therapists (PTs) are trained in a 3-year doctorate program to evaluate and treat acute injuries as well as chronic pain. That training also teaches PTs to recognize when an injury is beyond their skill level, and to refer that injury appropriately.
Let Our expertise Improve Your LIfe!
Many Physical Therapists are licensed to evaluate and treat you for up to 30 days without your having to see a physician first. Unfortunately, that does not apply to Medicare patients who must still obtain a prescription first. If you are new to physical therapy and want to be sure that what a Physical Therapist offers is right for you, you should expect to receive a free consultation. An initial physical therapy evaluation and treatment may include but not be limited to a musculoskeletal assessment, gait analysis, balance testing and, of course, hands-on pain control techniques including spinal or joint mobilization.
Suffering from Golfer’s elbow? Fearing Carpal Tunnel, Shin Splints or Plantar Fasciitis? Chronic pain in your neck, back, shoulders, hips, knees or feet? Want Your Healthy Active Lifestyle to Return?
Physical Therapists can — and want to — teach you how to help heal yourself and prevent further injury and pain. They are exceptionally skilled at teaching their patients proper exercise and movement techniques, so they typically send every patient home with an exercise program.

Instead of waiting several days to see your family doctor and spending extra money for co-pays and/or deductibles and frequently undergoing unnecessary tests, you could have already had two or three physical therapy sessions for far less money and be on the road to a rapid recovery. The Milliman studies* found that when physical therapy is the entry portal to the medical system for an acute back injury, that the outcomes are better; recovery is faster; and the cost per episode can be at least $10,000 less. Unfortunately the Physical Therapy industry has done a poor job educating the public about what PTs do and what they can and cannot treat. Physical therapy unfortunately tends to be the afterthought when “nothing else has worked.”
June 2021
So, the next time you’re in pain because you twisted a knee, sprained an ankle, trimmed too many hedges or hit too many golf balls, give a Physical Therapist a call first if you’d like to feel better faster and gain much knowledge about how to better take care of yourself and prevent further injury. *Milliman, Inc. for the Private Practice Section of the American Physical Therapy Association. “Impact of Physical Therapist Services on Low Back Pain Episodes of Care.” Chicago, April 12, 2018. Extending the Life of Your Carpets With spring in full swing, spring cleaning is all the rave. Cleaners in general, both outside and inside, are in season, helping as many people as possible. From power washing to interior cleaning, when it’s time to open the windows, many homeowners also invite professionals in to do what they do.
light reflects differently off those fibers and a “wear pattern” will begin to show. Regular vacuuming will help prevent that from happening, and will lift the fibers regularly. When that regular maintenance is combined with a professional cleaning every 6 – 12 months, your carpets can last for many years.
Carpets require professional service 1–2 times a year, to not only deep clean and sanitize but to extend the life a carpet. Besides hiring a professional, there are steps a homeowner can take to also help a carpet last longer. The most important thing for a carpet is regular vacuuming. A good vacuuming daily — especially for the high traffic areas — will remove dry soil and debris that can scratch and damage the fibers. Once damaged,
It’s also important to consider high-traffic areas, where the carpet meets directly to a door such as from your kitchen to the outside or from a bath to a hallway or bedroom. A door mat or throw rug should be placed at those spots, to catch as much dirt and debris as possible. This will protect the carpet where it is most vulnerable and susceptible to damage. Throw rugs should be laundered or replaced as needed, so they can continue to protect the carpet.

No wet carpets No downtime No detergent residue No use of harsh chemicals Safe for all types of carpets Safe for your family and pets
When purchasing new carpet, it’s always important to get the best padding you can afford. An important purpose of padding is to protect your carpeting by keeping the underside of your carpet (its backing) from wearing against the bare floor. It will also help with the impact of heavy furniture and foot traffic (high traffic areas). Commercial applications do have gluedown options but for residential use, it’s best to discuss with your carpet installer what your best options are. Don’t settle for “free padding” that big-box stores advertise. The combination of regular vacuuming, higher-grade padding, strategic rug placement, and semiannual or annual professional cleaning will help keep your carpets and house cleaner longer, and will also extend the life of your carpet, so you can enjoy it for many years. Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors
Bringing People Together Is Fun, Sometimes Like a Puzzle.
Two months ago, I riddled trivia questions with mention that Bringing People Together is not a trivial thing in these times. Our advertising Sponsors make it possible for Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors to be delivered in print through the mail and also available online at www.NewtownSquareMag.com. I’ve been told my trivia questions, with the cryptic hints I related to our advertising Sponsors, got our readers turning pages with more fun than task. That’s not surprising because our Sponsors have become so well-known to our readers from the colorful ads that are the reward our Sponsors gain and which make our magazine possible. Bringing People Together is not trivial but I can tell you it can be a puzzle. I’m not referring to how we select a resident for the cover, or who becomes an Expert Contributor. What puzzles

me most about our Bringing People Together mission, particularly Newtown Square, is why well-known Newtown Square businesses have not chosen to become advertising Sponsors of our community through our hometown magazine. There are good reasons I’m sure, but still I’m puzzled.
Sometimes small local businesses don’t advertise or consider community sponsorship as being necessary. Some businesses don’t want more business. And we must always keep in mind that there are many ways to support and sponsor residents of Newtown Square. But still, even businesses that have not established a budget for advertising or community sponsorship should be finding ways to brand their business with the communities they depend on for sales revenue.
CAN YOU FIND 10 NEWTOWN SQUARE BUSINESSES THAT COULD BE SPONSORS?
As we emerge from the pandemic, our mission to be Bringing People Together is clearly understood by our readers who have rewarded our Sponsors with new respect and loyalty for demonstrating how much Newtown Square means to the success of their business. That was the goal when we launched our magazine three years ago, and thanks to our readers, being a Sponsor of Newtown Square has been proven as a good return on investment, delivering loyal customers who have come to love reading their hometown magazine every month. It should not be puzzling to any business any longer. There’s a party going on that we call “social media in print,” and in a puzzling way, some businesses are still noticeably absent from the party. Let’s look into this puzzle. Here’s a Word Find Puzzle with hidden names of 10 Newtown Square businesses you would know. Each one should and would make a great advertising Sponsor of our Newtown Square community through our Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine. Read the hints for each hidden name in the Word Find Puzzle and see how many Newtown Square businesses (not advertisers in our magazine) you can find. Sorry, the answers are not provided. That’s because with this kind of local puzzle, the answers can’t always be known. But thankfully, sometimes the answers do jump right off the page, just like the businesses that you see advertising on our pages and that are leading the way and Bringing People Together every month through our hometown magazine. Inevitable Wealth Coaching Empowering Investors
Transforming Investing: Leaving Families with Freedom, Fulfillment and Love
Investor Coach Brendan Magee
by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Photos by Shannon Lynn Photography www.ShannonLynnPhotography.com
Since 1998, Inevitable Wealth Coaching, owned by Investor Coach Brendan Magee, has been helping families rediscover and reclaim their American Dream. Whether that dream gets expressed by a purpose like love or generosity or something more tangible like providing children with the best educational experiences, Brendan explained that once discovered, that purpose is something way more fulfilling than money could ever be.
mutual fund managers produced, but most importantly with the lack of answers the industry gave as to why returns were so inconsistent. “When I entered the industry, I was excited by the opportunity to offer people what I believed was superior investment expertise, but what scared me to death was the realization that the industry didn’t have any magic at all,” Brendan said. In fact, he discovered the industry purposely was misleading investors because it helped their bottom line.
Step one for Brendan is empowering families to discover their true purpose for life and money. After that, he helps families discover the science of investing and see the difference it makes in their quality of life. “As it was the case with me, I want people to experience freedom from the pain and struggles they experience with money and investing,” Brendan said. A major part of that transformation is people understanding how markets actually work. “I can speak firsthand about the fear, stress, worry and anxiety people experience when without any understanding about how markets work,” he explained. “You hand your life savings over to people you will never meet, have no idea of what they are really doing with your money and have no assurance that what they are doing actually works.”
That all changed for Brendan when he met the only four men to win the Nobel Prize for their research into investing (Drs. Harry Markowicz, Rex Sinquefield, Merton Miller and Myron Scholes from the University of Chicago). Shockingly, they helped Brendan understand that the world of investing works very differently from how Wall Street and Madison Ave lead investors to believe. With this “Aha!” moment, Brendan found his passion and life’s calling. He realized he could not stomach doing things the way the investment industry wanted, so he opened his own investor coaching practice, Inevitable Wealth Coaching. “I chose the name Inevitable Wealth Coaching because once people discover and learn how to follow the science of investing, they realize the results are inevitable,” Brendan said.
Discovering how markets actually work turned out to be the solution to one of the darkest periods in Brendan’s life. After graduating from Temple University, he worked for an affluent financial planning firm in the early 1990s. Brendan became disillusioned with not only the inconsistent returns
Brendan opens his practice to a wide variety of clients, from the college student all the way to the retired individual. Coaching comes in a variety of forms but mainly in the group format. “We just finished up a workshop for over 700 families from around

the country via Zoom,” he said. Although once COVID is over he looks forward to going back to in-person coaching sessions. The success of Inevitable Wealth Coaching is based on a proven series of distinctions and discoveries that Brendan helps expose families to. They are designed to help people see for themselves their destructive behavior around money and investing, rooted in blind spots and biases. This is when, according to Brendan, things transform because now, money and investing are occurring in a whole new way which empowers families to take new and inspired actions. It is these actions that help people start to live and experience their American Dreams today, rather than someday in the future or as a place to get to in their lives. Brendan’s mission of empowering families and individuals led him to write two books on the topic: His first, Portfolio Paradigm: Why Your Financial Future Hinges on Asking the Appropriate Questions, and his most recent, The Investor’s Bill of Rights: Owning Your American Dream. He hopes his books help transform how people experience investing, leaving them with the freedom to relax and ultimately have peace.

community of people who look after each other and are very welcoming!” he said. He and Jennifer also appreciate how much the Marple Newtown School District has helped them as parents by providing such a great educational and social experience for their sons Liam and Owen. The Magees love Newtown Square so much that they recently moved just a few streets away into a larger home with a great back yard for their kids and Labradoodle Toby. Brendan and Jennifer serve their local communities in several ways. Brendan has volunteered as a NELL Coach, and is currently a Lector at their church, St. Anastasia. Jennifer is a volunteer with Compass, a pro bono strategic consulting firm. In the greater Philadelphia region (including Delaware County), Compass strengthens the capacity, effectiveness and sustainability of local nonprofits. If the Magee family looks familiar, it may be because you read about them in Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine in April 2020. We are pleased that since that time, Brendan has joined in further supporting the community by Bringing People Together as a Sponsor and Expert Contributor in our hometown magazine.

Exterior Remodeling Projects to Improve Your Home’s Curb Appeal A home’s exterior elements – its siding, shutters, roof, windows and doors – all add to or detract from what’s commonly known as “curb appeal”: A home’s ability to attract potential buyers. But curb appeal is also how well your home’s exterior matches or enhances the overall look of your neighborhood. If you’re currently or soon will be selling your home and its exterior elements show they’re aging or failing – the roof leaks, windows are outdated looking or obviously drafty, wood starts showing rot, etc. – you may not get any reasonable offers. Even worse, some potential buyers will pull up to the curb and drive off within a few minutes. Whether you’re a current or soon-to-be home seller or you simply want to update or spruce up your home’s exterior, consider these several ways to add to your home’s curb appeal. Front Door: Probably the simplest and most cost-effective way to add some fresh “character” or charm to you home is to replace your front door. Doors now come in many different colors, textures, styles, and are constructed with energy efficiency in mind. Fiberglass doors, which are the most resilient to year-round weather conditions, are available in a wide range of architectural designs. Windows: Most windows older than 15 to 20 years have insufficient glass and poor energy efficiency. Replacing your home’s windows should be considered an investment. A handful of manufacturers produce top-quality windows that are coupled with Low-E (Low-Emissivity) glass. Low-E glass minimizes the amount of ultraviolet and infrared light that is able to come through window glass without minimizing the amount of
S. PANCOAST Topsoil & Mulches
light that enters your home. These modern windows, which typically come with frames made of aluminum, wood, or composite materials, provide superior performance and a clean, refreshing appearance. Roofing: Metal roofs are now very popular, as are different styles of asphalt shingles and shingles made of natural materials such as slate and cedar. You can add dimension by mixing materials and color. Older homes that originally had slate or cedar shingles can be beautifully restored back to their original glory. A great way to improve curb appeal on mid-century homes, which typically have asphalt shingles, is to add a metal accent roof. Siding: You might be surprised how much new siding can increase not only your home’s curb appeal but also the value of your property! Consider mixing colors and/or materials (cedar impressions, board and batten), or a more modern siding such as James Hardie cement board. Porch/Portico: Many homes have some variation of this or it can be added by a minor design or remodeling project. This is a great way to showcase your home, possibly increase your home’s living space or simply provide cover when welcoming visitors on a rainy day! NS

Senior Living Tour Checklist When it’s time to start the search for Assisted Living, it can feel daunting with the myriad of choices currently available. Sometimes, one can walk into a community and feel like it will be the perfect match but digging beyond the initial impression will ensure there are no surprises down the road. As you start to narrow down assisted living options for yourself or loved ones, touring the communities firsthand is a critical step. Here is a list of commonly asked questions during a tour: Levels of Care: Do they offer Independent Living (no care required), Assisted Living, and/or Memory Care?
Sizes of Apartments: What are the different sizes of residences available in the community? It may be important to compare the square footage from one community to the next. Furnishings: What furniture comes with the apartment, if any? Appliances within the Apartment: Do they offer kitchenettes (typically all one needs in Assisted Living because meals are generally included in the pricing)? Are washers and dryers in the apartment or available in a common area? Is a TV included in the room? Pricing Structure: What do the monthly charges cover? What is NOT included in the monthly charges? (e.g., cable, telephone land line, transportation to/from doctors’ appointments)
Understanding Senior Living Options Can Be Overwhelming and Confusing
Medical Services: What services are available on site? Do they have house doctors who make rounds to the community on a routine basis? What about specialists? Physical therapists? Amenities/Activities: What activities are offered and how frequently? To what extent are the residents involved in determining what is offered within the community? Food: Is there a fixed menu? Are meals offered at set times or do they offer “all day” dining?
A Free, Personalized Senior Housing Placement Service For: • • • • • • • •
Price Increases: How much does the monthly rate increase each year? Is there a cap as to how much it can increase? Poor Fit: What types of issues or conditions would make a resident no longer a good fit for the community? (e.g., needing a catheter, becoming bedbound)
Retirement Communities Independent Living Assisted Living / Personal Care Memory Care Respite Services Residential Care Homes Hospice Care Skilled Nursing Homes
Overall Aesthetic: What feeling do you get when you walk through the community? Are residents engaged, relaxed, happy? Does the overall decor and look feel comfortable? Cleanliness: Do the community and residents look clean and well cared for? Are there lingering odors or does it feel fresh?

How Funeral Directors Help Celebrate Life Funeral Directors understand that everyone’s life is a unique story that’s meant to be shared with their loved ones. The acts and events during which a loved one’s story is shared help those left behind express their grief and find joy in fond memories of their loved one. Funerals are traditionally a way for friends to share, comfort and support a family during a sad and sometimes heartbreaking time. Today’s funerals now serve a dual purpose: Comforting the family and honoring the unique person who has passed. Funeral and Memorial Homes offer countless opportunities to incorporate personalized funeral ideas into ways we can memorialize our loved ones, including ways our loved ones might remember us.
Funerals can be traditional or informal, religious or new age, eco-friendly, or any theme that meant a lot to your loved one. A memorial funeral service allows us to celebrate and remember everything we treasure about our loved one and their time with us. Because there are so many possibilities and often so many details to immediately consider at a time of sadness, funeral planning professionals are a crucial resource. Their knowledge about and skill in planning events that celebrate life provide lasting comfort for family members and their friends.

Allyson McTear, Founder of Lokks: A Fun, Fashionable Way to Keep Laces Tied by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Photos courtesy of Allyson McTear
Attention parents, coaches and teachers! Are you tired of tying, retying and unknotting your kids’ shoelaces? What if there was a simple and stylish way to keep those laces snug all day long? Impossible you say? Not anymore! Introducing Allyson McTear, Newtown Square resident and Founder of Lokks — a fun, fashionable way to keep shoelaces tied. Lokks work by holding laces tight simply by sliding them over the knots and “lokking” them shut. Lokks come in five fun designs, are easy for kids of all abilities to put on, and are perfect for all types of activities. Many popular products are born out of necessity, and Lokks is no different. Like every other busy parent, Allyson spends most of her free time watching her four kids compete in sports, take dance lessons and play with friends. And while she enjoys those special moments, there has always been one thing bothering her: the dreaded shoelaces.

She started with a simple hairclip that she slid over the knot. While that did a decent job, it didn’t take long for her kids to refuse to wear their mom’s hairclips on their sneakers and cleats. But Allyson felt that she was onto something, so she continued to experiment, do research and have faith that she could find a solution. As a former attorney, she knew she could handle certain tasks involved, but needed help getting started. Allyson found a local product designer in West Chester, who helped bring her idea to life. Allyson explained that it’s no easy task to take a product from an idea to production and finally to market. “There were a lot of extra steps that I didn’t anticipate,” she said. “Add the pandemic into the mix, and the process took much longer!” Allyson admits there were times when she felt like putting things on hold and even giving up, but her husband Brian kept encouraging her to push forward. Looking back, she’s glad she did because the lessons learned and the people she met along the way have proved invaluable.

A few years back while watching her son’s basketball game, Allyson remembers that play had to be stopped repeatedly, to tie shoelaces. “It was so disruptive to the game, and players and parents were frustrated!” said Allyson. “I have tied and retied my four kids’ shoelaces, loosened triple knots with my teeth, and hoped for the best as I’ve watched my kids run around when their laces came untied.” After that game, Allyson went home determined to find a solution.

One major milestone on her journey was winning QVC’s The Big Find contest last fall. Allyson was among thousands of applicants who presented their products in hopes of winning an on-air time slot. “Lokks was the only children’s product that won!” said Allyson proudly. “We aired live in September, but due to COVID, the host was in the studio and I zoomed in from home.” Allyson said that between the positive feedback from QVC and word of mouth, online sales have been brisk. Shoppers can browse and buy online at www.Lokks.co or by visiting Lokks on Facebook and Instagram. So, what’s next? Allyson is looking to partner with retail stores and add more designs to appeal to people of all ages and abilities. After all, does anyone out there like repeatedly retying shoelaces?!? NS

Time to get your lawn chairs and American flags ready because the Marple Newtown 4th of July Parade is back! After an exceptionally long year of cancellations and closures, Marple Newtown residents will finally be able to celebrate our Country and our Freedom! Important to note is that the parade will take place on Monday July 5th starting at 10am. Because the 4th falls on a Sunday, the Parade Committee decided to delay the parade a day, out of respect for the churches along the parade route whose services would otherwise be interrupted. The fun will begin at St. Albans Circle, and continue eastbound on West Chester Pike to the Broomall Fire Company’s new facility on Malin Rd. A rain date is scheduled for Saturday July 10th.
Red, White and YOU! contest entry
The Marple Newtown 4th of July Parade has been a staple of our community for over 75 years. Jan Ceton, Chairman of the 4th of July Parade Committee, is excited to welcome everyone back. “I think this year is going to be our best yet!” he said. “People are ready to get outside, celebrate and return to some sense of normalcy.” Jan, who has been at the helm of the committee for 37 years, loves watching generations of families come back every year. “We missed out on so many traditions in 2020,” he said, “which makes our return extra special.” Although the parade was canceled last year, the committee worked hard to come up with a plan to unite our communities: They launched a Red, White and YOU! decorating contest for area residents and businesses. The turnout was overwhelming, with 59 entries. A caravan of judges toured the area and awarded

Proud to call Newtown Square Home! prizes such as “Best Window,” “Most Patriotic” and “Hometown Heroes.” Merrie Staurowsky, Parade Committee Vice Chair, announced, “We were so thrilled with the amazing support and feedback from our first Red, White and YOU! decorating contest that we decided to keep it going in 2021 and beyond.” Spectators this year will be entertained by marching bands such as Mersey-British Rock Invasion and the Slim Jim & Big Guy Band. And new to the parade this year is the Whoa Phat Brass Band. Our local marching bands, fire companies and first responders will join in the fun. Local businesses, community clubs and neighborhood residents will impress you with their decorated floats, marching groups and costumed individuals. But the little ones often steal the show with their creative and festive decorated strollers, wagons, hand-drawn floats and bikes. “A popular feature added in 2019,” Jan said, “was a ‘Quiet Zone’ where sirens and loud music were silenced for one block. That will continue in 2021.” The parade ends with an awards ceremony, where medals and trophies are given to the top three entries in each division, and their names and photos are featured in the following year’s commemorative book. Long-time Vice Chairman Rich Crowe is working with Leigh Ann Coary, who has taken over for the retired Dick Pound, on advertising for the 4th of July commemorative book that is distributed to over 4,000 residents and businesses. “This fabulous parade is funded entirely by the families and businesses in our community,” Leigh Ann explained. “Local businesses, civic organizations, clubs and individuals have the opportunity to place an ad to show their community support.” Leigh Ann said that there will also be an opportunity to donate during the parade’s bucket brigade. And new this year is 4th of July parade T-shirts that can be ordered online.

History Spotlight
The Earliest Newtown Map of 1816 by Doug Humes Photos courtesy of the Newtown Square Historical Society
In 1816, the Pennsylvania legislature authorized mapmaker John Melish to make detailed county maps for Pennsylvania. What did he find notable enough to include on the Newtown map? The West Chester Stage Road runs east and west, and was the route of the stagecoach from West Philadelphia to Newtown and then to West Chester. The route passed the Fox Chase Tavern right after entering from Marple. The Newtown straight road ran from the south to the north, bisecting the township east and west. An early school sat across the straight road from where Gentile’s is now located. The Hunter and Mendenhall (Teca!) farms lay to the south. Newtown Square Quaker Meeting is marked QM, at the same location it has been since 1711. At the next intersection, Goshen Road bisects the township running from Darby Creek
The 1816 Melish Map of early Newtown Part of legend identifying the mapmaker
to Crum Creek. Further north, a road runs east to a saw mill on Darby Creek – the road that today we call Saw Mill Road. The last road to the north takes you to Old St. David’s Church, on St. David’s Road. On the way, it crosses what was then a new bridge, built with funds left in an 1810 will by Thomas Walsh to replace the ford at that location with a solid stone structure. It remains in place today.

Goshen Road ran west to the Thomas grist mill. The covered bridge was still 44 years away. West Chester Road split at Boot Road, and the Frazer home, with the stage road crossing a bridge over Crum Creek into Edgmont and the President Tavern at the top of the hill, which we know today as La Locanda. At Crum Creek, a road we know today as Mill Hollow leads north to what once was a series of mills and distilleries, owned at the time by George Antricum (and misspelled on the map). Millers were paid in kind with part of the grain they milled, and with so much grain supply, a distillery was a natural addition.

Newtown in 1816 was a simple farm community, largely populated by Quakers. In 1828, William Crosley would open up a cotton mill near Walsh’s bridge, and several other mills and factories would pop up along that section of the Darby Creek, turning Newtown into an industrial center for the next 60 years. Those mills and factories did not exist when John Melish made his map. For more history on Newtown Square, Delaware County, and membership information, please visit our website at: www. Newtown Square in Bloom: Lining Our Streets with Trees by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Photos courtesy of Jackie McCormick
Have you ever noticed the beautiful flowers and plantings on West Chester Pike, welcoming you to Newtown Square? Have you admired the bright blossoms and manicured shrubs around St. Albans Circle? We know it’s difficult to look past the construction these days, but the members of Newtown Square in Bloom (NSIB) want you to know that they have been working extra hard to keep our town beautiful and to restore much of what seems to have been lost. Aside from their recent Native Plant Pop-Up Garden and Goshen Trail project, the NSIB committee is now focused on lining our streets with lush, colorful and fragrant trees. This Tree Streetscape Program along Route 252 North and South is made possible by a generous donation from Boiron, a French company whose North American headquarters is right here in Newtown Square. Boiron, the world leader in homeopathic medicines, prides itself on responsible environmental practices. Boiron’s commitment to this project, our community
(L-R): Fabrice Figliolino, Senior Vice President at Boiron, Paul Seligson, Chairman Newtown Square in Bloom, Janick Boudazin, President of Boiron
and the environment enabled NSIB to purchase 26 hardy trees to plant along Route 252 and West Chester Pike. NSIB Chairman Paul Seligson explained that the committee conducted thorough research before selecting which trees to plant. They consulted with PennDOT, who supplied a list of the best species to withstand drought, road salt, automobile exhaust and pollution. And our Sponsor Mostardi Nursery offered valuable advice on selecting, planting and maintaining.

Together, they chose Ivory Silk Lilac, European Hornbeam and Japanese Cherry trees. “Trees make such a positive difference to our quality of life,” said Paul. “It’s exciting to see a growing number of our residents and businesses working together to plant more and more trees throughout the community.” Other community partners in the project included Newtown Square’s Earl Ebling Landscaping and Aardweg Landscaping Design, both of whom helped with placement and planting. Businesses along the streetscape route that granted permission for trees to be planted were inagural sponsor Cavallo Auto Body, Gentile’s, Marple Friends & Neighbors Sponsor C&J Automotive Specialists, our Sponsor Neimeyer’s and National Realty Corporation. Newtown Township generously offered to assist in watering the saplings. Paul and his team of volunteers are proud to add this Tree Streetscape Program to their list of accomplishments. In fact, the committee’s previous work earned them a Special Award from America in Bloom for their Hanging Basket Container Displays and a Special Mention for Heritage Preservation. America in Bloom is an organization that recognizes communities across the country that are welcoming and vibrant with colorful plants and trees in clean environments.

Hardscape in Villanova, PA
Hardscaping Can Turn Your Back Yard into a Relaxing Outdoor Oasis
Hardscape in Bryn Mawr, PA
This is the time of year when nature invites us outdoors for rejuvenation, relaxation and social gatherings. To transform your back yard into extended living space that allows you to comfortably and frequently enjoy nature and have more entertaining options, consider hardscaping. Hardscaping is the design and construction of outdoor living space that includes one or more focal areas made of different types of solid natural materials. Each hardscape design typically takes several factors into consideration: How you intend or expect to use your new living space, the amount and shape of available spaces, how you want it to look, and your budget for the project. Patios and walkways, the most basic and common hardscapes, can be made with many different materials such as brick, concrete, flagstone and pavers. For a patio that can be installed relatively quickly and gives a streamlined contemporary look and feel, use large pavers or even larger concrete slabs. Consider getting a covered patio so you can use it rain or shine. When beautiful patios and walkways are installed correctly and as an extension of your home into your landscaping, they can add a great deal of aesthetic and financial value to your home. In your new outdoor living space, you might want to include a kitchen and/or bar and areas for dining and lounging. As you design your outdoor oasis, you’ll find that the possibilities are endless and many options will match your personal taste and
budget. An outdoor kitchen can include components such as a grill, stovetop burners, a full-size oven, a pizza oven and a refrigerator. Or it can be as simple as some counter space for food prep and buffet-style dining. Your available backyard space and budget may allow you to also include soothing water features such as waterfalls, fountains and ponds. To design your hardscape for year-round ambiance and warmth on chilly evenings, include a fire pit or a fireplace. Imagine the fun and memories your family and friends will have as they’re gathered around that cozy setting, roasting marshmallows and creating memories. A hardscape will look beautiful and function properly for many years if it’s designed by a specialist who has an in-depth understanding of appropriate and durable materials, space requirements, irrigation systems and proper grading for adequate drainage. When that specialist works with you from the initial design meeting through the planning, construction and completion phases of the project, you’ll soon be enjoying the relaxing outdoor oasis you envisioned. To Buy or Not to Buy? Where Do Your Values Lie? Housing is one of the most popular topics in the US today. Residential properties are a hot commodity as evidenced by bidding wars, lines around the block for an Open House, Buyers waiving inspections and mortgage appraisal contingencies. All of this is causing Home Buyer Fatigue, and for the Home Buyers who give up too early, it could cost them thousands of dollars in the long run. The two main questions Buyers should ask themselves when making their decision to buy or wait are: 1. Do I expect home values to be higher a year from now? 2. Do I expect interest rates to be higher a year from now?
Forti Homes with Keller Williams Realty Graphic courtesy of Keeping Current Matters
hovering at 3%, the average forecast expects that within a year, mortgage rates will be at 3.6%. By waiting, Buyers could quickly face higher prices, higher interest rates and decreased affordability. For most of us, our home is so much more than an investment. It is a place where we can paint walls, hang pictures, and plant trees, knowing that we will be able to enjoy them for years to come. A home is a part of who we are, and connects us to what and who we value most. Fannie Mae’s Q4 2020 National Housing Survey asked participants what feelings they associated with owning their home. The top 3 answers were: 1. Control over what you do with your living space (91%) 2. A sense of privacy and security (90%) 3. A good place for your family to raise your children (89%) If the past year has taught us anything, it’s that focusing on our health and safety are a priority. Owning a home is a big piece of being able to accomplish that goal. NS
Planning to move in 2021? LET’S MAKE IT HAPPEN! Curious about your home’s value? Home Buyers should be aware that recent real estate market statistics show that there are currently 410,000 fewer single-family homes available for sale than there were at this time last year. This surprising statistic forced major industry forecasters such as Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and the National Association of Realtors to amend the forecasts they made in January. They now expect home values to increase more than 7% this year. And while current mortgage interest rates are

If you are a drone pilot or you know someone who is and can fill the cockpit left open by Chris Stack flying away toward retirement, contact Bob Blaisse at BBlaisse@BestVersionMedia.com.

May, June and July are National Safety Months by Bob Blaisse
Summer brings great warmer weather and even greater expectation of activities picking up as we come out of the COVID-19 pandemic. As we increase summer activities keeping health safety still in mind, we’ll find more people outside, more cars on the road and more opportunities that call us to remain mindful of safety in even more ways during our summer activities. The month of May was National Water Safety Month. That mindfulness should be with us all summer. This month of June is National Firearm Safety Month, and next month, launching early with 4th of July celebrations, is, of course, National Fireworks Safety Month. National Firearm Safety Month is a good time for all firearm owners to recommit to firearm safety year-round, following the call of the National Shooting Sports Federation (NSSF) to “Own It? Respect It. Secure It.” And the NSSF shows how to do just that, through its resources available to firearm owners in its safety videos such as “Introduction to Range Safety and Etiquette,” printed resources such as “Firearms Responsibility in the Home,” and the infographic “Safe Storage Options for Your Lifestyle,” available at the NSSF website: www.NSSF.org. Because this month is National Firearm Safety Month, I reached out to Shawn Ask about OUR NEW Cleaning & Surface Protection!
Brown, Owner of Stars & Stripes Tactical and one of our hometown Sponsors, to find out what his message would be to our readers. “For anyone Shawn Brown, who has owned and Owner of Stars handled guns safely for & Stripes Tactical years, we must always be mindful of the youngest among us who do not yet understand proper storage and handling of firearms,” said Shawn. “It’s our responsibility to teach and practice practical gun safety techniques all year long,” he added, with mention that his customers must commit to store firearms responsibly, and how that does not mean hiding a gun in a closet, drawer or under a car seat. “Firearms should be stored in a locked safe, gun vault or storage case that must be inaccessible to children,” advised Shawn. He also stated that gun-locking devices, which make firearms inoperable, should be used in addition to locked storage of disassembled firearm parts, and ammunition must always be stored in a locked location separate from firearms. For more information during National Firearm Safety Month, contact our federally licensed firearms safety advocate and hometown Sponsor, Shawn

Advice for New Moms, About Post-Partum Hair Loss Hairstylists are frequently asked by their guests, especially those who are new moms, about postpartum hair loss. Here are a few myth-busting facts and good advice about this topic. Know that although you may feel as if you are going bald, you are NOT! Everyday we naturally shed between 50 and 100 hairs. What happens during pregnancy is that due to a rise in hormones and increased blood volume and circulation, we barely shed any hair at all. This is how we end up with gorgeous thick manes that almost every woman wishes she could have for the rest of her life! After your baby arrives, your hormone levels drop, your hair makes up for lost time by falling out in much bigger clumps than you’re used to. The total volume of your hair loss probably isn’t more than you would have lost over the last nine months. It just seems that way because it’s happening all at once. Here’s what you need to know and remember: • Hair loss generally starts sometime between 3-6 months after you give birth. • Hair loss can last for up to 6 months. • Hair loss is completely unrelated to breastfeeding. • No vitamins have been shown to help prevent hair loss, although they are great to keep taking.
As a new mom, you must remember to feed yourself! A healthy diet is always good for a healthy head of hair. You want to make sure you’re eating a variety of fruits, vegetables and healthy proteins, to make sure you're getting all the nutrients your body needs. NS

• Be gentle when brushing. If balding in spots does occur and does not return to normal, you can always ask your doctor for minoxidil (generic Rogaine). Another product that may be helpful is a volumizing shampoo and conditioner. Try Pureology’s Clean Volume, paired with one of their volumizing styling products, to achieve more thickness and overall fullness in your hair. Also using a leave-in treatment such as Redken’s Anti-Snap can help strengthen your new hair strands that are coming in.
