ON THE COVER The Snyder Family at St. Albans Swim & Tennis Club

What a summer! No room at the beach, on planes or trains, and traffic again on West Chester Pike! We’re charging back out after the world pandemic took center stage for too long. It’s great to see our friends and neighbors more regularly again. This month begins our fourth year of publishing Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors in print and online at www.NewtownSquareMag.com. And also our neighboring hometown magazine, Marple Friends & Neighbors, which is also online at www.MarpleMag.com. The 37th issue of each magazine now makes a combined 74 issues with Marple Newtown residents on a cover! Look online to get reacquainted with the Newtown Square families we introduced you to in our past issues. And go look at Marple Friends & Neighbors online, to see how many Marple families you know who found themselves on the cover of their hometown magazine. Every month, Readers tell me how they look forward to each new issue. In every case, after a few kind comments, every Reader gets around to saying the same thing: “You know, I actually have known more than several of the families on the cover.” How great is that! Well, of course they do. We’re all social beings. We’re friends. And we’re neighbors. But we don’t realize just how many people we know in our community through our work or volunteer service, schools or sports, or our family members. Whether taking walks, shopping locally or worshiping together, over years of living in Newtown Square, we become connected far more than we realize. And that’s at the root of our magazine’s motto: Bringing People Together. I know you’ll enjoy this issue of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors. After all, you’re one of us. And I hope you feel the same way about our advertising Sponsors seen on these pages of your hometown magazine. They’re one of us too. Enjoy the best-of-the-rest of this summer. Shop Local. And whenever possible, please try to do business first with our advertising Sponsors who truly deserve our support.

Hello August! We’ve officially entered the Dog Days of Summer! Did you know that this nickname is not because our pups are panting but because, during this month in ancient Roman times, the star Sirius — also known as the dog star — rose at the same time as the sun? Did you also know that August is National Golf Month? We’ve got some great ideas on how to celebrate on and off the greens. The party continues as we say “Cheers to 3 Years” of Bringing People Together through our Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine. The Marple Newtown 4th of July Parade was a huge success, and we have the full recap about winners. And we introduce you to the Snyder family — Chris, Lauren, Katie and Ally — who are jumping into August feet first! We are always looking for more Newtown Square families, individuals and organizations to feature in our magazine. If you’d like to nominate someone, please email me at STurnerHilliard@BestVersionMedia.com.

Resident Feature

The Snyder Family

Finding Passion, Purpose and Time for Play by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Photos by Sierra Clark Photography www.SierraClarkPhoto.com

We would like to thank

for sponsoring this month’s Resident Feature. This month we are pleased to introduce you to the Snyder family. Chris, Lauren, Katie and Ally know how to appreciate life, value our community and embrace opportunities by jumping in with both feet. Chris grew up in Havertown with his parents and two younger brothers. He went to Lynnewood Elementary, Haverford Middle School, and graduated from Haverford High School in 1997. Athletics was especially important to Chris, so he competed on Haverford High School’s swim, golf and baseball teams. He also sang in the school chorus. Chris furthered his education at The University of Richmond where he continued to stay active. “I swam for the men’s swim team, sang in the all-male a cappella group, and had a great time with friends as a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity,” Chris recalled. He graduated in 2001 with his degree in Business Administration/Finance and a minor in Math. He then returned to PA to earn his Master’s in Business Administration/Finance from Temple University’s Fox School of Business. Lauren grew up with her parents and two sisters just a few blocks away from Chris. She went to Manoa Elementary, Haverford Middle School, and graduated from Haverford High School the same year as Chris. In high school, she played volleyball for the Haverford Fords. She then attended Rosemont 6

College, where she also played volleyball and earned her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 2001. She then began working for Vanguard, and continued for eight years before leaving to care for their girls. By now you’re probably thinking that this story is about two high school sweethearts, right? Not so fast. Although Lauren and Chris were classmates in middle school and high school, their romantic relationship didn’t begin until they were juniors in college. Lauren said, “We had a lot of friends in common and stayed in touch all throughout high school and beyond.”

Lauren admitted, however, that her mom always used to say that “Chris Snyder would be a nice boy to date.” Mom always knows best! It is said that absence makes the heart grow fonder, and for Chris and Lauren, it was 250 miles of separation that sealed the deal. “I would make the drive up from Richmond to visit Lauren every month,” Chris said, “and I chose to move back to the area after graduation so we could be together.” Lauren was living in West Chester at the time and Chris was working in Philadelphia, so he decided that an apartment in Newtown Square would be an ideal place to rest his head.

Chris and Lauren’s oldest daughter, Katie, is excited to begin 9th grade at Marple Newtown High School this fall. She’s an avid competitive swimmer at Episcopal Academy Aquatic Club (EAAC) and at St. Albans Swim & Tennis Club. “Katie is a distance swimmer and backstroker first and foremost, but she prides herself on doing all the strokes well,” said Lauren. “Her favorite race is the 200-yard backstroke.” Chris describes Katie as extremely driven, goal-oriented, determined and focused. She’s fun-loving and very witty, too. When Continued on page 8

Two years later, Lauren and Chris married in 2003, at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church. They honeymooned on the “One Happy Island” of Aruba. Amid the crystal-clear water and pristine beaches, Chris said he and Lauren also learned that the island has a challenge with stray dogs due to uncontrolled pet populations. “Those dogs were unkempt, but they were friendly and walked right up to us on the street,” he explained. “Lauren couldn’t resist petting them, and I knew right then that we would eventually have dogs of our own.” After returning from Aruba, the couple bought a home in the Westgate section of Havertown. They settled in familiar surroundings and started a family. Eventually, Chris and Lauren decided that they needed more space and a bigger yard for their two girls and future puppies. They both agreed that Newtown Square was where they wanted to live, so they began their search and found the perfect home in the St. Albans neighborhood.

Resident Feature not in school, she spends her days at the swim club. “Katie goes from swim practice in the morning, to card games and gaga ball with friends in the afternoon, to lessons and swim meets in the evening,” he said. “Chlorine is her favorite perfume!” Their daughter Ally will start 6th grade this fall at Paxon Hollow Middle School. While Ally shares her sister’s love for the water, her true passion lies on the pitcher’s mound. Ally just completed her first season in the 12U age group for the Newtown Square Petticoat League Rebels. “The Rebels made it to the championship game and were runners up in the Del Val South Division,” Chris said proudly. “It’s a joy to watch them play together.” Lauren describes Ally as hard-working and focused with a sunny disposition. “Ally is one of the most positive people you will ever meet,” said Lauren. “When she was just four years old, she would come downstairs and proclaim it the best day ever before we even finished breakfast!” Rounding out the Snyder family are their two beloved Miniature Schnauzer pups Archie and Oscar. They are two-year-old half-brothers who quarrel like it, too. Chris said it’s easy to figure out who Archie and Oscar’s favorite humans are. “When Lauren, Ally or Katie leave the house – the saddest howling you’ve ever heard. When I leave – silence.” Though Archie and Oscar may fight, these half-brothers agree on letting Chris know where he ranks.

There is no doubt that Katie and Ally get their determination and focus from watching their parents. For over 20 years, Chris has worked for Temple University Health System. He started as a financial analyst and is now the Vice President of Financial Operations and Business Intelligence. Chris’ job involves using data to help hospitals and physician practices make sound business decisions and provide world-class care to the Philadelphia region. And though the COVID-19 crisis was challenging, he said that seeing firsthand the efforts and leadership of Temple’s care providers was awe-inspiring. “I am grateful to have played a role in supporting them.” Lauren currently works as a Teacher’s Aide at Newtown Square Presbyterian Nursery School. “I love the people I work with!” she said. “I am fortunate to not only be surrounded by children, but to have caring and confident leaders who helped guide us through the pandemic.” Lauren credits the school’s Directors, Jane Fiorvanti and Meghan Kazanjian, for their excellent job in successfully navigating through a very difficult time. The Snyders make getting involved and giving back to our community a priority. In 2016, they joined St. Albans Swim & Tennis Club, to give their girls an opportunity to swim, have fun and learn from some of the best swim coaches in the area. But that was just the beginning for Lauren, who now serves

on the Board as one of the swim and dive team directors. She smiled and said, “I love this club – it’s my happy place.” Chris volunteers his time with Newtown Square Petticoat League. He served as their Treasurer for three years, and continues to help the organization in every way he can. When asked what they love about Newtown Square, Chris and Lauren said that living here has shown them just how much our community has to offer. From the Marple Newtown School District to St. Albans Swim & Tennis Club, the EAAC to Newtown Square Petticoat League, the Snyders feel fortunate to have found their home here. “Our girls have found their passions. They’re learning that you get back what you put in,” they said, “and as a result, they’re building strong work ethic and character.” The one thing missing? “During the pandemic, we really missed block parties and backyard get-togethers with friends,” they said. “We are so excited to finally get back to that!” Your Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors are ready to dive into that, too! Do you know a Newtown Square family, individual or nonprofit group who should become known by our community? Make your nominations for upcoming feature articles by emailing your ideas to Sheila TurnerHilliard at STurnerHilliard@BestVersionMedia.com. N S

Expert Contributor by Andrew Martella Martella Electric

What to Do Before, During and After a Power Failure What causes your electrical power to go out? Automobile accidents can damage utility poles. High winds, snow and ice can pull down power lines. Utility company maintenance sometimes doesn’t go as planned. And occasionally, the cause is in your own home’s electrical system. There are some things you can do to avoid a power failure, and many things you can do to be prepared before, during and after the power and lights go out.

As an essential business, Martella Electric is OPEN & AVAILABLE!

A short or extended widespread power failure is not a problem if your home has a gas-powered backup generator system. Some folks feel such an investment is well worth the cost because it ensures they’ll have electricity, heat and A/C yearround regardless of what may cause a power failure. When weather forecasters predict conditions that could result in a power outage, make sure you have on hand plenty of bottled water and a battery-operated radio. Fully charge your cellphone and one or two mobile power banks/blocks, and put fresh batteries in your flashlights. Discuss with your family a plan to relocate if authorities require residents to evacuate. If your lights go out but your neighbors’ lights are still on, an electrical problem is affecting only your home. Check your circuit breaker panel or fuse box, to see if any breakers are tripped or fuses are burned out. A tripped circuit breaker or burnedout fuse may control many lights, making it seem like your entire house has no power. If all looks fine, check the meter box and electrical cables on your home’s exterior.

Martella Electric Company is a team of courteous, professional, and highly trained electricians. Our priority is to deliver superior customer service backed by a 100% satisfaction guarantee.

If your neighborhood loses power, calling your local utility company can usually keep you updated about repair status and estimated time until power restoration. Many power companies now have a mobile app that provides such information.

• Electrical Service Upgrades • Landscape Lighting • Circuit Breaker Panels • Fireguard Circuit Breakers • Security Lighting

During a power failure, you can extend the life of your cold and frozen food by keeping your refrigerator and freezer doors closed. Many times, the power is out for only a few hours and food spoilage is not an issue. When your cellphone’s battery needs to be charged and your power block is empty, you can recharge both batteries by plugging them into the live power sources inside your car.

• Recessed Lighting • Electric Vehicle Charging • LED Under-Cabinet Lighting • Lighting Controls • Exhaust Fans

The August Sproul Lanes Student of the Month is Maggie Doogan, who will be a Senior at Cardinal O’Hara High School this fall. Maggie received a Certificate of Achievement, and a “Pizza Bowl” gift certificate courtesy of Sproul Lanes, our Sponsor of this program. Maggie has demonstrated Excellence in Service to local communities in many ways. For the past two summers, she has worked as a Swim Instructor for Marple Friends & Neighbors Sponsor Speer Swim School. Owner Emily Speer enthusiastically reports that Maggie “keeps her commitments and is great with kids!” Maggie has also helped coach many of Emily’s daughter’s friends in basketball camp. Since Maggie’s freshman year at O’Hara, she has honed her own basketball skills while serving as a Girls’ Varsity Basketball Team member. She also plays on O’Hara’s Girls’ Varsity Volleyball Team. Despite the “unusual” 2020 – 2021 school year, Maggie’s basketball team — O’Hara’s Lady Lions — won the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) 5A State Championship on March 27. In her senior year, Maggie hopes to have the honor and responsibility of serving in a leadership position as Team Captain. Maggie’s willingness and ability to give back to the local community has been nurtured by her family’s tradition of helping in local food bank kitchens, to make meals for the homeless. Maggie was also an Altar Server for her church when she was in 7th and 8th grades. And as a Community Service Corps (CSC) member at O’Hara, Maggie participates in outreach programs such as Operation Santa Claus (gifts for children who live in local shelters) and Big Buddy (helping and mentoring a local 2nd-grader).

Expert Contributor by Jeremy Sirkin Executive Tree Care

In the Shade of a Tree There’s no doubt that 2020 and the beginning of 2021 will make it into the record books for a lot of reasons. A global pandemic, a presidential election and a new form of life called “virtual,” all without hugs and handshakes. While everyone’s lives were consumed with other things, outside their windows, their yards were seething with life as usual. Trees, plants, animals and insects were all striving to thrive. The trees and landscape dealt with every type of weather — all while providing shade and beauty. The insects, from the beneficial bug to the invasive pest, were born, consumed all they could, reproduced and died. Over the last decade, the field of Agriculture has had to contend with a number of new target-specific invasive insect pests such as the Spotted Lantern Fly (Lycorma delicatula) or SLF. Known by its vivid colors and utter nuisance populations, this pest has been a source of destructive annoyance for many homeowners. SLFs are plant-hoppers and lazy in flight despite having two sets of wings. They feed on a number of host plants, including Grape, Ailanthus and Silver Maple trees among many others. The good news is that with proper treatment, SLF populations collapse. A lot of research has gone into providing customers appropriate control while protecting the environment. Reputable tree care providers follow the guidelines set by the Penn State Agricultural Extension Office and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.

The other pest, which is of even greater concern, is the Emerald Ash Bore (Agrilus planipennis) or EAB. These iridescent, darkgreen pests grow to roughly ½-inch long and 1/8-inch across. Unlike the first-named pest, EABs are responsible for billions of dollars in damage and many millions of lost trees. That being said, control IS possible when treatment is provided before the first signs. A “vaccination” of healthy trees is a logical analogy. Comprehensive data and material recommendations can be provided to customers as a proven way to save their Ash trees. Such information also explains the negative impact of losing a key feature of their properties. In the 140+ years of modern arboriculture, people have made a growing connection with the trees on their properties and in their landscapes. Thankfully, many have noticed that when their trees are alive, they hold a much higher value than just to provide shade or firewood. The environment and urban microclimates are greatly improved when trees are flourishing. Consult with a certified arborist for a comprehensive evaluation and a better life in the shade. NS

My hometown pride has me sharing it again, with this same necessary qualifier: This free monthly hometown pride magazine would never have launched without the support of business leaders who value the residents of Newtown Square as being vital to the success of their business. After three years, your hometown magazine is a success of social media in print. We have A Party that is hometown pride. And the proof is in how we are rewarding our hometown Sponsors who make it all possible. Of course we are because they deserve a reward, our business, for taking a bet on us and choosing to use a portion of their limited marketing budget to let us know how important we are to them by their agreement to fund our hometown magazine.

You see the ads of our Sponsors on these pages every month. This month, on the Third Anniversary of our magazine, may I ask for your mindful review of our Sponsors. See their business names below, businesses you recognize, and some you have only recently come to know. Consider the choice each business makes every month, to sponsor Newtown Square, to make our hometown magazine possible. If you truly enjoy receiving your hometown magazine for free each month, consider letting some of these Sponsors know your appreciation, perhaps even by choosing to do business with them first whenever possible. And let them know why with intention. This month look for our Sponsors’ ads with intention, just as they have intended to make it possible for our magazine to come to you each month in the mail and online at www. NewtownSquareMag.com. How to Maximize Your Roof’s Lifespan If your roof has ugly dark streaks, know this: Those streaks may look like dirt, mildew, soot or mold, but what they really are is algae. The most common type is known as gloeocapsa magma, more commonly known as blue-green algae. As this algae grows on your roof, it starts as small spots that eventually become visible streaks. By the time the algae is noticeable, it usually has been on the roof at least two months. Algae spores are airborne, which means they can be carried by wind, animals and even on your clothing. Airborne algae spores can quickly spread from rooftop to rooftop in a neighborhood. This is also true for townhomes, condos and apartment complexes. Roof algae is much more common today than it was 20 years ago. Traditionally, asphalt shingles got their name from being made of mainly asphalt (an oil-based product) and felt material. To save money, most shingles today contain some asphalt but they’re mostly made up of fillers such as fiberglass and

AFTER

crushed limestone. Unfortunately, those fillers encourage the growth of algae because the crushed limestone serves as the algae’s main food source. Algae is extremely harmful to your roof! As algae feeds off the lime in the roof shingles, your roof starts to deteriorate. If you don’t regularly remove the algae, your 20-year roof life will likely be reduced to half that amount. So, how do you remove blue-green algae? First of all, you should never power wash an asphalt roof. If a contractor suggests doing that, they do not know what they are doing! A qualified contractor has special low-pressure cleaning machines to ensure there’s no damage to your roof. To ensure your roof ’s maximum lifespan and keep your property looking great, you must maintain your roof. NS

Chilled Berry Soup It’s What’s for Dessert! By Inga Berghav

Sweet, fresh strawberries and blueberries combine with zesty lemon and spicy ginger for a chilled, perfectly refreshing dessert soup.

Directions

• 3 cups fresh strawberries, hulled

Rinse berries and place in a food processor or blender; cover and process until puréed. Add the oat milk, maple syrup, lemon juice and vanilla extract; cover and process until blended. Pour into a large bowl, then whisk in sour cream or yogurt until smooth. Cover and refrigerate for about 2 hours.

• 1 cup fresh blueberries

Yields 4 servings.

Ingredients • 1/2 cup oat milk

Tips

• 1/4 cup maple syrup • 2 Tbsp lemon juice

• For the sweetest (and healthiest) berries, choose organic and locally-grown if possible.

• 1 tsp vanilla extract • 1 tsp powdered ginger

• For fuller flavor, opt for dark maple syrup.

• 1 cup sour cream or yogurt

• If fresh lemon juice isn’t an option, the next best choice is one that’s not from concentrate.

Celebrating

• For a dairy-free soup, use non-dairy sour cream or yogurt (such as one made from oat milk or coconut milk).

10

YEAR 2 011 - 2 0 21

• Or, for a sweeter non-dairy version of this soup, use coconut cream in place of the sour cream or yogurt. In this instance, you may wish to use less maple syrup! • If you prefer to use fresh ginger, peel and grate it as finely as possible. Use 2 to 4 tablespoons, to taste.

Mobile Trading Apps Destroying More Than American Dreams Mobile trading apps have exploded over the past two years. With a cell phone, anyone can start buying and selling stocks, bonds, and all kinds of investment products, whether they know what they are doing or not. Think for a second what could happen if the public had unsupervised access to their prescription medication. Can you envision what a disaster that would be? The apps make use of subtle yet very suggestive marketing campaigns. One ad from the Super Bowl claimed “You were born an investor.” Nothing could be further from the truth! No one is born an accountant, a doctor, a lawyer, or a master plumber. Real and permanent harm can be done by people believing they are experts in something that they aren’t. Massachusetts Securities regulators agreed and charged one mobile app with luring young investors into making risky and costly trades by making investing seem more like a video game. Apps have also given investors access to margin accounts where they borrow against their account values. Like any other debt account, there are heavy interest charges and fees that go along with them. A tragic story tells of a 20-year-old investor who never heeded any warnings, and after believing he ran up debts of over $730,000, sadly he committed suicide.

What these mobile apps really take advantage of is the vulnerability of human beings. No one likes to think of themselves as vulnerable. But let’s face it we all have blind spots and biases that can lead us into destructive thinking and behavior. Bullies know how to seduce us into believing something about ourselves that just isn’t true. They manipulate our desire to belong and fit in, to the point where we completely lose sight of the risks we are exposing ourselves to. So effective was one app that from January to April, they racked up over three million funded accounts which now has a value of $11 billion. The destructive behavior that app users are being talked into is stock picking, market timing and track record investing, which in all their forms have been academically proven to be destructive. Why? Because to be successful at these activities a person has to have the ability to consistently predict the future.Through bait and switch tactics, some mobile apps are turning future generations of investors into gamblers without them ever even suspecting it. As a point of reference, The Prudent Investor Law of 1990 states “Efforts to separate the winners from the losers through forecasting and analysis are deemed wasteful.” Sadly, it is sometimes more than money that is being wasted.

Business Profile

Glass Experts with a No-Pressure Attitude by Holly Stupak Photos courtesy of David Gura

The team at Bryn Mawr Glass

Remodeling a bathroom is filled with choices. And when you’re putting the finishing touches in like mirrors and shower doors, those choices can be endless. Good thing we have Experts like Bryn Mawr Glass to help you make your design even better and get the best value for your money.

doing measurements and overseeing job sites. Keeping customers happy and satisfied is Dave’s favorite part of his job. “I’m not a guy who likes projects that linger,” said Dave. “What I like about our glass business is that we can complete multiple jobs in a day and be able to satisfy many customers.”

For the past 24 years, brothers Dave and Lew Gura have owned the area’s expert glass company, going out of their way to meet their customers’ needs. “We like to make the process as short and painless as possible,” said Dave. “When you’re doing a bathroom remodel, we’re typically the last part of the process. We pride ourselves on making that process quick and easy!”

Delaware County natives, Dave and Lew grew up in Drexel Hill and graduated from Upper Darby High School. Soon after high school, they both began working in the glass business, although Dave did a brief two-year-stint in the welding business. When the opportunity arose to buy Bryn Mawr Glass from the previous owner, Dave said the decision was a no-brainer. “My brother and I both know the glass business really well,” he said. “At that time, the company was struggling, but when we took it over, we were able to turn things around. Now we’re the first company that people call when it comes to glass needs!”

Founded in 1947 by Lou Pace, Bryn Mawr Glass is one of the oldest glass specialty shops in the Delaware Valley. Dave and Lew worked for Bryn Mawr Glass for many years before they purchased it in 1997, eventually moving it from Bryn Mawr to Havertown, to have more space and serve customers more efficiently. It still has that same neighborhood feel that it always did, and when customers walk in, they are treated like family. “When it comes to work in general, I like a fun, family atmosphere,” said Lew. “I love meeting new customers and helping them with their projects. We really get to know them.” On a typical workday, Lew is in the office, taking care of the orders and shop operations, while Dave is out in the field Ask about OUR NEW Cleaning & Surface Protection!

Dave still lives in Drexel Hill with his family, which includes a son and daughter, two stepdaughters and two dogs. Lew, his wife and two daughters live in Broomall. On weekends, they both enjoy spending time at the Jersey shore. Dave especially loves taking his boat out in Avalon. “I’m really busy during the week on projects, sometimes 10 a day,” said Dave. “When I get some downtime, I really like to chill out and spend time out on the water.”

Serving Delaware and Chester counties, the company also has a team of technicians, many of whom have been with them for more than 15 years. Office Manager Susie Camarote has been with the team for more than three years. “It’s a great place to work!” she said. “The owners are fantastic and it’s very family oriented.” The Bryn Mawr Glass team is skilled at educating customers on all their options and then tweaking recommendations, to complete the preferred look. “Not only do we try to give them the most attractive look, but we also concentrate on giving them the best value for their money,” said Lew.

customers to be satisfied,” said Dave. “And, of course, we want those 5-star reviews!” Come into the shop and their team of glass specialists will work with you to provide the best repair, replacement or installation possible for your project. Whatever your project may be, they’ve got specialty glass design in stock to fit all needs, budgets and styles, and their service comes with a "no-pressure attitude.” Whether you need a single sheet of glass or are remodeling a kitchen or bathroom, they treat every project with the utmost importance. No project is too big or small for Bryn Mawr Glass. If it’s glass related, they can do it! With over 60 years of combined experience in the glass business, they’ve earned their reputation as a neighborhood shop that gives its customers the best service possible. Sump Pump Preparation for Summer Storms The summer/fall storm season is well underway. Check out your existing sump pump and associated equipment now instead of trying to deal with it during a heavy rainstorm. If you have an existing crock or basin in the floor, make sure the pit is free from debris, which can cause the float on the pump to not work properly. Debris can also easily clog the impeller (a small filter on the pump). And make sure the discharge piping from the pump has a check valve, to prevent water from coming right back into the pit once it’s pumped out. When you replace the sump pump, you should check the valve, to make sure the discharge pipe to the outside is clear.

Sometimes, something as simple as a new mulch bed or landscaping can cause the discharge pipe to no longer drain freely — a real problem if the pump kicks on! Check the power outlet once a month, to make sure it’s working properly. Many basement outlets have ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI) that can easily trip, causing no power to the pump.

It’s also a great idea to seriously consider a backup pump system. It’s a separate pump installed in the same pit that will kick on if the primary sump pump fails. The primary pump may not work due to a power outage or mechanical failure. If you have a home that heavily relies on the sump pump during storms, then a backup pump system is strongly recommended.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development estimates the average life expectancy of a sump pump at 10 years. It really depends on how frequently the pump is running, and that, of course, varies from house to house. It’s often “peace of mind” for customers to replace sooner so they can be more confident during storms. NS

There are two types of backup systems. The first is a battery backup system. It runs on a 12-volt marine battery, and comes with a wall charger to keep the battery charged and ready to go. Homeowners can expect to get anywhere from 5–8 hours of pump run time out of the battery. The other option that’s gaining a lot of popularity is the water-powered backup system, which is powered by your municipal water supply and requires no electricity to operate. This option will function for a much longer time than the battery backup systems. A water-powered backup system will not work, however, if you have a well water system. Consult with a professional to discuss the options that would be the best fit for your property.

Robots in Newtown Square? by Sheila Turner-Hilliard

Forget an alien invasion. We’re here to report that robots have descended on Newtown Square, and it looks like they’re here to stay! Rumors have been flying all around town about what this means for our residents and our future. Where did they come from? What are they doing here? How will these robots affect our lives? You’ll be relieved to know that a thorough investigation was launched and the results led us straight to The Niemeyer Corporation. What does a store that sells lawn equipment have to do with robots, you ask? For that information, we turned to our Sponsor Karl Niemeyer for some answers. “Robotic lawn mowers have been popular in Europe for some time now,” explained Karl. “We’re just starting to see the rise in popularity here.”

Robotic lawn mowers work the same as robotic vacuums. They are automated machines that will trim your lawn without any assistance from you. Once you perform the initial setup, you can set the schedule and even the length of the cut! Karl added that when you purchase a robotic lawn mower from The Niemeyer Corporation, they will survey your lawn, install an invisible fence boundary and program the machine for you. Aside from being ultra-convenient, there are a few more benefits to leaving your traditional lawn mower behind. Just like all-electric vehicles, robotic lawn mowers are powered by electricity. They do not require any gas or motor oil to run, making them an environmentally friendly alternative. You can schedule these “set-it-and-forget-it” devices to cut from an app on your phone! Going on vacation? No problem! There’s nothing like coming home to the look and smell of fresh-cut grass. POWER EQUIPMENT & REPAIRS OUTDOOR

Summertime Shimmer Whether it’s on the beach, at the pool or just enjoying outdoor activities, many people seem to feel compelled to spend as much time as possible out in the sun. Time outdoors can certainly be beneficial to your mood and temperament, but it’s important to remember that sun can damage your hair and skin. Be proactive with your summer beauty regimen. Add new products with a high Sun Protection Factor (SPF) to your normal skin and hair care routines. Most hair ties do your hair more harm than good, and when sunglasses’ nosepieces and hinges break, they can pull out strands of your hair. Putting your hair up — especially when it’s wet from chlorine or salt water — is extra-damaging to your hair and scalp. Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp! Keep in mind that the sun and tanning beds can drastically fade hair color and are just as harmful to your hair as they are to your skin.

Here are some ways to prevent and even reverse summer hair damage: • Start off the summer with a trim, to get rid of split ends. • Use a UV blocker for your hair as well as for your skin. • Use leave-in spray hair conditioner, to protect your strands. • If your hair is long, wear it in loose braids or wear a hat. Summertime can also be a great time to exfoliate (slough away) dead skin cells. As humidity increases, skin is better able to tolerate stronger formulas and active ingredients in skincare products. After freshly cleansing, include a product with Vitamin C in your summertime AM and PM skincare routine. Additionally, Vitamin C helps prevent and treat uneven skin pigmentation, which shows more in the summer months. In the warmer months, put aside the heavy makeup you may typically use. With increased sweat and oils bombarding your

skin in summer’s heat, lightweight makeup in oil-free and weightless formulas will allow your skin to breathe without clogging your pores. Believe it or not, water makes up almost 25% of the weight of a single strand of hair, so hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Water and electrolytes keep the body hydrated, support the skin, and also keep your hair from real thirst. Dehydration immediately halts hair growth, and your hair can become brittle enough to split. Consider adding targeted nutritional supplements like collagen, hyaluronic acid and coconut water to improve your hair’s texture and keep your hair growing normally. Finish your AM skincare routine by putting on sunscreen with a high SPF, and then reapply it at least every two hours when you’re out in the sun. UV rays cause up to 90% of photo-aging that happens to your skin. NS

History Spotlight

The Closest Race in Olympic History

Dad Alex McKee with six of his nine swimming children

by Doug Humes Photos courtesy of the Newtown Square Historical Society

Tim McKee looked up from the pool at the 1972 Munich Olympics and saw the number “1” next to his name. He had won the 400 I.M. (Individual Medley) in a time of 4:31:98. After a lifetime of training, the gold medal was his. Looking down from the stands was his proud father, Alex McKee, who had been an Olympic-caliber swimmer for Ohio State in 1939. Alex had been a good bet to make the 1940 Olympics swim team. And then came World War II. The 1940 Olympics were canceled. When Captain McKee returned from Army service, his Olympic competition opportunity window had closed. He transferred his dreams to his 9 children, and in 1961, he moved his family near Newtown Square’s then-new

Suburban Swim Club. His children could walk out their back door and down a trail through woods to the club. The McKee children were all terrific swimmers, and now one of them, 19-year-old Tim, had won gold. Or had he?!? The scoreboard showed that Gunnar Larson of Sweden had finished in the exact same time as Tim, down to a hundredth of a second. Larson’s name also showed the number “1.” In 1972, electronic timing was still relatively new: It was a touchpad wired to a central computer. The timing device actually measured the impulse to the thousandth of a second. It was opened and new times were flashed up. Tim had lost, by .002 of a second. Science had determined the winner. And Tim proudly accepted his silver medal while Larson received gold. When Tim got back home to Newtown Square, he received letters from various scientists, who pointed out just how small

The Olympic Committee then adopted a rule change: No race would ever be measured by thousandths again. Such future races would be a tie, with two gold medals awarded. Years later, Tim McKee has no regrets. “It’s not who I am,” he said, “it’s who I was and where I’ve been.” After a career in public safety in Florida, and induction into the University of Florida and International Swimming Halls of Fame, Tim and his wife Courtney are living happily ever after in her native Australia.

.002 of a second was. They said it’s 10 times faster than the blink of an eye! They advised that no swimming pool could be built to that tolerance, and that many factors could change a result, including a coat of paint, a bulge in plaster, and the length of wiring from the inside vs. outside lane. The scientists insisted that no timing device could measure a race down to .001 of a second without taking into account those factors.

Let Freedom Ring! Congratulations to All Winners in the 4th of July Parade! by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Photos courtesy of the 4th of July Parade Committee

The reviews are in: The 2021 Marple Newtown 4th of July Parade was one for the record books! The weather was perfect, the streets were packed with people, and the excitement in the air was electric.

Best of Parade winner Reese Armstrong

Grand Marshall of the parade Marty Godfrey

1st Place Large Float

This year’s parade was dedicated to Frontline Workers, First Responders and Essential Workers. For many residents of Newtown Square and Marple, this year’s parade marked the end of the pandemic and the beginning of letting our new freedom ring. Praise and thanks to the Parade Committee flooded their Facebook page just minutes after the conclusion. Words used to describe the event were “spectacular,” “the best one yet,” and “absolutely perfect.” Spectators were entertained by marching bands such as Mersey-British Rock Invasion and the Slim Jim & Big Guy Band. And new to the parade this year was The Marching Cobras Drumline and Danceline from New York. Our local marching bands, fire companies and first responders joined in the fun. We even had an impressive helicopter fly-over from PennSTAR, a nonprofit organization that provides rapid

transport of critical care patients as well as on-scene services at the site of accidents and trauma-related incidents. Local businesses, community clubs and neighborhood residents did not disappoint with their decorated floats, marching groups and costumed individuals. But it was the little ones who stole the show with their creative and festively decorated strollers, wagons, hand-drawn floats and bikes. In fact, the award for Best of Parade was 7-year-old Reese Armstrong, whose hand-drawn float Happy Birthday America earned her the largest trophy of the day. The parade ended with a celebration of our great country. Volunteers were on hand to serve pretzels, hot dogs and water. The crowd gathered to listen to The Marple Newtown Community Band play our National Anthem, after which the awards ceremony began. Medals and trophies were given to the top three entries in each division, and their names and photos will be featured in the 2022 parade commemorative book.

SOONER THAN LATER In the normal course of life, you may be faced with a major or minor legal issue. In its early stages, it can be difficult to determine on your own the seriousness of a given situation. No one knows how an issue is going to develop and what the possible ramifications or impact will be on their lives. The most important thing to do is to consult with an attorney immediately. Do not assume you know what the law requires or that the law is dictated by common sense. Remember the adage that only a fool has himself for a client. The law can be very complicated.

Facing divorce, child support or custody matters? Suffered a serious injury at work or in an accident? Social Security Disability needed or at risk?

YOU NEED AN ATTORNEY WHO CAN HELP.

For example, the initial application for social security disability benefits is done without legal counsel. Legal counsel does not become applicable unless benefits are denied at the initial stage and an appeal needs to be taken. You have 60 days from the date on the letter from social security to file an appeal. If you consult with an attorney before the initial application, you will be better prepared to handle the application and a better chance of success. The attorney will advise you to include all medical conditions as well as perhaps vision, hearing, weight and other medical conditions that you may not realize are included. Initial applications are, however, sometimes denied. If you had consulted with an attorney who handles social security disability cases before the initial application, that same attorney would be prepared to handle the appeal. The consultation with an attorney does increase your chances for a successful initial application. The moral of the story is to consult with an attorney sooner than later. Chances are it could save you time and money in the long run. NS

The primary reason to have a legal consult is to afford yourself the time that may be needed to deal with a budding scenario properly and with the benefit of counsel moving forward while the legal issue is developing. Forewarned is forearmed. Avoid procrastination over seeing a lawyer and/or the most attractive desire to save money. A quick consult can save you a lot of heartache, time and money in the long run. Innocent or seemingly innocuous mistakes can be avoided. The chances increase significantly for a more successful outcome when you have the benefit of legal counsel. Sometimes attorneys cannot go back in time and correct those mistakes. The legal world and all that comes with it can be very technical in nature. People may rely on what seems to be common sense decisions. The danger is not knowing proper procedure or what is required under the law and what should or should not be done.

How Performance-Based Music Education Benefits Budding Musicians Thinking of learning to play a musical instrument? Or might that be something one of your children or grandkids is considering? If so, you should be aware of the many benefits of a performance-based music education program compared to traditional music education. The typical weekly music lessons that previous generations took — and many music students today still take — have them learning music theory and concepts with no specific “end game.” That traditional way of learning a musical instrument relies on repetition and short-sighted goals. Students go to their weekly lesson, go home and practice what they learned, and then return the following week, to have the instructor check on their progress. It’s the same routine week after week, and somewhere down the line, students often wonder how much did they really learn? Performance-based music instruction gives students the opportunity to immediately demonstrate what they’ve learned about “how music works” during each lesson. Students learn to play songs made popular by actual bands such as Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Stevie Wonder and Frank Zappa. A perfect example is Led Zeppelin’s song “Black Dog,” which uses a minor pentatonic scale. Instead of an instructor just talking about and showing a few minor pentatonic scale patterns that students then play a few times, students experience first-hand how various music scales and concepts are actually used within a song or style of music. The fun that comes from performing such real music can significantly speed up the learning curve. In performance-based music instruction, groups of about 25 students work as a team throughout the year, practicing and playing many songs that they then perform live in shows and concerts. This gives each student the opportunity to play their musical instrument in front of an audience while taking part in a small band made up of different combinations of students. So, over the course of the season, each student typically plays in at least one band with each of the other students.

In this dynamic performance-based environment, students also benefit by learning life skills such as cooperation, teamwork, communication, public speaking and goal-setting. As students achieve their goals for performing all the songs for each new show (about every three months), their self-confidence grows exponentially. Within a few seasons, students who started out too shy to even go onstage seem to become “rock stars.” This increase in their confidence and self-image with their music instructors and fellow students often follows through into their regular lives as well. In this way, students learn songs not simply for the instructor’s satisfaction; songs are learned to entertain live audiences, both in-person and through streaming video. Performance-based music instruction may seem revolutionary, but it’s not really if you think about why people felt the need to create musical instruments and the wide variety of musical styles: To share the joy that music adds to life! Our Community

Cheers to 3 Years!

by Sheila Turner-Hilliard

We’re having a party and you’re invited to celebrate with us! That’s right: Our hometown magazine is turning 3 this month! And our latest checkup indicates that we’re strong, healthy and growing nicely, thanks to our dedicated Publisher Bob Blaisse, who had a vision of Bringing People Together in our hometown. Best Version Media (BVM) publications have been connecting local communities since 2007. It started with the vision of Dave Durand, Pete Ericksen and Paul Lubinski. The trio developed a small handful of magazines in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin, area for five years before expanding the business in 2012. Dave now serves as BVM’s Chief Executive Officer; Pete is the company’s Chief Operating Officer; and Paul is their Chief Procurement Officer. BVM is now one of the fastest-growing companies in the print and digital media industry, and now serves residents and local businesses across the United States and Canada with over 1,000 community magazines in print. In 2020, BVM distributed

more than 33 million magazines. That number is expected to continue rising due to BVM’s Mission of Bringing People Together and its post-COVID commitment to helping small businesses grow. Prior to March 2018, Bob Blaisse had co-founded and helped develop a media business that published designs for signage used by church and school ministries. That business venture had provided the opportunity for Bob to come to know Dave Durand at BVM. In March 2018, Bob called Dave, who immediately asked Bob to join BVM, with the suggestion of a management role that would be better served by Bob after learning the magazine Publisher’s role firsthand. “Dave Durand asked me if I would like to use my first six months to start a BVM magazine in my own hometown,” Bob explained. “Of course, I said, but only if I can launch separate hometown magazines for both Newtown and Marple townships, which have been sister communities developing alongside each other for hundreds of years.”

Dave agreed and Bob set out to find the Charter Advertising Sponsors needed to gain the green light to launch Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors and Marple Friends & Neighbors in August 2018. When asked what makes our hometown magazine special, Bob was quick to share what every Reader already knows, “Every month, our Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine combines the best elements of social media and print by sharing positive, family-friendly stories, which are Bringing People Together through hometown pride.” 2018 November

In November 2018, we featured the Avellino family: Scott, Mimi, Scott Jr., Maggie and Sarah. Since their family was featured, their son Scott has gone off to college, Maggie will follow next year, and Sarah will graduate from grade school in 2022. This family’s feature article made clear that home is where love is, and almost three years later, they still hold tight to the community they know and love.

If you know the Avellinos, you know that love and laughter go hand in hand. “We really didn’t tell anyone about being interviewed for the magazine beforehand so we got lots of calls from family and friends who were surprised when they saw us on the cover,” recalled Mimi. The Avellinos also love to be surprised to see who makes the cover each month. The Tulskie family, feaBringing People Togeth er tured in our August 2019 magazine, has fond memFrie nds & Nei ghb ors ories of the experience. “We have great memories,” said Patti Tulskie. “We had never had a professional photo taken of our family so that was a nice experience, especially with our dog Tucker in it.” Patti also said that Team Tulskie: when we asked if we A Family Unit in Newt own Square could include in their feature article how she and Ed had met, they enjoyed the opportunity to reminisce about that. “It was a fun walk down Memory Lane,” Patti said fondly.

Patti, Ed and the Tulskie kids love reading the magazine each month. “I always knew how much I loved living in Newtown Square, and after reading our family’s story, I became even prouder of our community!” said Patti. She recalls that a very special part was having their favorite staycation spot, St. Albans Swim & Tennis Club, featured as well.

For the Thiruselvam family, being featured in our February 2021 issue was fun. Gira, David and the kids were excited to see their story in print. “We thought we were boring,” Gira laughed, “until we read the article that proved our lives are a lot more interesting than we had considered.”

In addition to featuring local families, Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors also spotlights local celebrities, entrepreneurs, authors and volunteers. Every month, you’ll also find local events and the latest news on what’s happening around Newtown Square. What lies ahead for our hometown magazine? Perhaps a Sports section to complement our new www.BVMSports.com website, which reports on local sports from PeeWee to Pro. As our Publisher Bob Blaisse often says, our advertising Sponsors will help us decide. They made it possible for Newtown Square to have a hometown magazine in print and online at www. NewtownSquareMag.com. As our number of Sponsors has grown, so has our magazine page count, which in turn has allowed us to add more Expert Contributors, whom Readers have come to know and trust for their hometown expertise. August Is National Golf Month by Sheila Turner-Hilliard

Summertime calls for celebrations, and our Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors certainly know how to do that! From the 4th of July Parade to firing up your grills for National Grilling Month, July was sizzling! We’re keeping the party outdoors this August by celebrating National Golf Month. As if avid golfers need another excuse to hit the links, players this month are encouraged to introduce new golfers to the game by sharing their experiences and advice. National Golf Month was started in 1993 by The Professional Golfers’ Association of America (PGA), in an effort to make the sport more diverse, equitable and inclusive. This month-long initiative stems from the PGA’s own annual charity event that promotes golf as a sport that is accessible to all genders and ages no matter their skill level.

So, what can we do to celebrate and share our love of the greens? For starters, take a trip over to Valley View Golf. This former Olde Masters Golf Course has been renovated with the focus on fun for the whole family. The grounds include a 9-hole golf course, a 42- bay driving range, an 18-hole miniature golf course, a pro shop and a snack bar. Owners Pam Mariani and Brian Robinson said that Valley View Golf offers many ways to introduce new players to the game. “We host many corporate team-building events, women’s clinics, group lessons with our golf pros and junior clinics,” said Pam. Brian added that they offer kids birthday parties and sell gift certificates, which is a great way to share the love. Over at Aronimink Golf Club, members are not only celebrating National Golf Month, they’re basking in the glow of Forbes magazine recently naming the club one of the Top 20 Most Exclusive golf and country clubs in America.
